What’s this about another gubmint shutdown? It is just the echoes of mind?
Let’s make this a government shutdown open thread.

My really good friend Ryan just called to inform me that his son was born at 11:30 central time, weighing in at almost 8 lbs, 19″ long, and with good color and vitals. His name is Cole (sort of after moi- they just loved my last name as a first name for a kid). I’m stoked.
Welcome to the universe, Cole!

The other day I was picking some stuff up from my dry cleaners and we were talking a little about the season, and the woman behind the counter asked “do you celebrate Christmas?” I said I did, so I was busy looking for presents and the like, and I asked her if she did, and she said no (it turns out she is Turkish). I like that people are comfortable talking about whether or not they celebrate Christmas, though this was in Brighton, a suburb of Rochester that has a large Jewish population, so it’s probably not typical.
Is the war on Christmas stuff about telling Muslim and Jewish Americans to suck on this? Or is it just about pissing off liberals? A twofer? I honestly don’t understand.

Good news from Evelyn Bridges (Charlie’s Angels) about Penny, the JRT:
Visited with Penny today and took some new pics. Vets are still attempting to save her front leg and she is receiving therapy and doing daily exercises but still favoring it quite a bit. She will have re-evaluation within 10 days.
__
Hoping that further surgery will not be necessary..She is a loving and playful girl and loves going to breakfast every morning with her “Dad” at local restaurant..
__
Will let all know additional progress.
__
Thanks to all for helping her save her leg.

I know–we shouldn’t even bother with Glenn Beck because everything he says and does is a WTF moment.
Well, here’s one you didn’t see coming:
Glenn Beck Suggests Tea Party is Racist
Yeah. I’ll let that sink in a bit.
From the article:
In a startling admission from a major Tea Party champion, former Fox News host Glenn Beck said Friday that race may be a motivating factor in the Tea Party’s opposition to President Obama. In an interview with Fox Business host Andrew Napolitano, Beck said Obama and GOP front-runner Newt Gingrich are both “big government progressive[s],” so he doesn’t understand why Tea Party members are supporting Gingrich. “If you’re against [Obama] but you’re for [Gingrich], it must be about race,”
Next up, Glenn Beck discovers that sun rises in the east, and that water is wet. Have we reached peak wingnut?
Open thread, also too.

Today’s festival of light. The Moustache of Understanding would like us to believe that globalisation was invented during the realm of St. Ronaldus Reagan. And yet medieaval Scandinavians managed to conflate pre-Christian celebration of the annual Ride of the Queen of Darkness with the Church-sanctioned holiday dedicated to a fourth-century Sicilian martyr and come up with “traditions” no less popular today than our American re-enactments of Dickens or Dr. Seuss…

Technically, of course, the Winter Solstice is another week away — and here in the northern climates we’ve got at least three months of snow & cold to face down. But the local tv weathercaster actually pointed out this evening that Boston’s sunset was a whole minute later than it was two nights ago, so from this point forward the days will be getting longer, as the light returns. Religious, agnostic, or atheist, we can all celebrate more daylight!
