Inflation was higher than expected, jobs and consumer confidence lower than expected. A new American golden age is upon us!

Trump’s inflation promises may finally be catching up to him. If tariff-driven inflation is truly arriving, already low estimations of Trump’s handling of prices could really plunge.

— New York Magazine (@nymag.com) August 15, 2025 at 5:39 PM

… Polling data has shown Trump getting consistently poor job-approval ratings for his handling of “inflation” and “prices.” According to Silver Bulletin’s polling averages, Trump’s net approval rating on inflation is a horrendous minus 25.5 percent, and it’s been below minus 20 percent since mid-June. Does this reflect anticipatory fears of the inflation we are now beginning to see? If so, it’s possible such inflation has already been baked into assessments of Trump’s job performance, and its actual appearance may not significantly erode his support, assuming it’s limited in size.

But there’s another possibility that could mean big trouble for Trump and his party heading toward the 2026 midterm elections, and Egger notes it as well:

It’s remarkable to ponder the gap between this economic picture and what voters thought they’d be getting with Trump on inflation. Many Americans seem simply to have swallowed his incredibly simplistic campaign pitch of “Biden makes prices go up, Trump will make prices go down.” The fact that they’ve kept going up even modestly so far this year has scanned as a disappointment to many. How they’ll respond to Trump actively making that inflation worse in the weeks and months ahead remains to be seen, but support for his ability to handle the economy only continues to soften.

Those who focus on inflation statistics may be missing that, which also helps explain why improved inflation numbers didn’t help Biden in the last two years of his presidency: Americans didn’t want prices to rise more slowly, but to actually go back down to where they were before their post-pandemic spike. The fact that general price drops don’t tend to happen without a recession may seem axiomatic to economists, but not to voters being sold a bill of good by Trump. Before long, he may pay dearly in political capital for that particular bit of deception.

Late Night Open Thread: The Kennedy Center “Honors”… Could Be Worse

Trump: Since 1978 the Kennedy Center honors have been amongst the most prestigious awards. I wanted one, never able to get one. I would have taken it. I waited and waited and waited and I said to hell with it, I'll become chairman. I will give myself an honor. Next year we'll honor trump, okay?

— Acyn (@acyn.bsky.social) August 13, 2025 at 1:05 PM

No, really. The list doesn’t include Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, Scott Adams, or Zombie Hulk Hogan. Nor even newly minted MAGA-celebrity Dean Cain (possibly because some told Trump Cain’s half Japanese). And with the Bloated Orange Manbaby squatting all over the event, nobody was expecting much anyways.

BREAKING: Trump names George Strait, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Crawford, KISS and Gloria Gaynor for Kennedy Center Honors in his new role as chair.

— The Associated Press (@apnews.com) August 13, 2025 at 12:02 PM

Per Rolling Stone:

… This is the first Kennedy Center Honors since President Donald Trump took over as chairman of the prestigious Kennedy Center earlier this year. His first action was removing Biden-era appointees from the board and stacking it with loyalists. At a board meeting in March, he said that things were going to change with him in charge.

“We’ll go slightly more conservative, if you don’t mind, with some of the people,” he said. “There are people out there that would not be considered that are much bigger stars than the ones that were being honored … In the past, I mean, these are radical left lunatics that have been chosen. I didn’t like it. I couldn’t watch it. And the host was always terrible.”…

… The country icon [George Strait] largely keeps his political views to himself, but he broke out Trump’s distinct dance move at a December 2024 show in Las Vegas to roars of approval from the audience…

Which explains why Trump was inspired. Also, per Wikipedia:

show full post on front page

… Strait has sold over 120 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time/ He holds the RIAA record for most certified albums by any artist, with 33 different albums that are certified platinum or gold. Considering singles and albums, he has a total of 20 multi-platinum, 33 platinum and 24 gold certification. According to the RIAA, Strait is the 12th best-selling album recording artist in the United States overall selling over 70 million records across the United States.

He is credited for pioneering the neotraditional country style in the 1980s, famed for his authentic cowboy image and roots-oriented sound at a time when the Nashville music industry was dominated by country pop crossover acts. Given his influence on the genre, Strait has been nicknamed the “King of Country Music” by writers and music critics. He currently holds the record for the most number one songs on all charts by an artist, in any genre of music. He has been nominated for 16 Grammy Awards, winning his first and only award for Best Country Album in 2009 with his album Troubadour…

Rolling Stone reminds us that Trump considers the 1980s a golden era:

Stallone, meanwhile, is an avowed Trump booster. “When George Washington defended his country, he had no idea that he was going to change the world,” Stallone said in December 2024 when appearing at an event with Trump. “‘Cause without him, you can imagine what the world would look like. Guess what, we got the second George Washington … We’re in the presence of a really mythical character … Nobody in the world could’ve pulled off what he pulled off, so I’m in awe.”

Trump returned the love when announcing the new Kennedy Center Honors class. “[Stallone] is a very special guy,” he said today. “A real talent. Never been given the credit for the talent. There was nobody else that could have done the roles that he did like he did them. Not even close. They’ve tried, and they didn’t work out too well … I’ll never forget I was a young guy and I went to see a thing called Rambo and it had just come out. I didn’t know anything about it — and I said, this movie is phenomenal. What the heck? And that turned out to be a monster.”

As for Gaynor’s inclusion, Trump said, “I will say that ‘I Will Survive’ is an unbelievable song.” Trump added that he was “98 percent involved” in the selection process for this year’s honorees.

Gene Simmons of Kiss is one of rock’s most famous conservative voices, and he was a cast member on The Apprentice in 2008, but he’s not a Trump supporter. “I knew him before he entered politics,” he told Spin in 2022. “Look what that gentleman did to this country and the polarization — got all the cockroaches to rise to the top. Once upon a time, you were embarrassed to be publicly racist and out there with conspiracy theories. Now it’s all out in the open because he allowed it … I don’t think he’s a Republican or a Democrat. He’s out for himself, any way you can get there.”

Despite this, and other critical things the members of Kiss have said about Trump over the years, all four members of the band released statements saying they were proud of the honor…

So Much of the News We Get is Badly Written or Bullshit

This post is in: Open Threads

So much of the news is badly written, or bullshit, misleading, or just plain lazy writing.  Or all of the above!  Not to mention the deliberate misinformation!

There were the poorly written, confusing pieces today about Louisiana that made is sound like some random judge wandered in and said nah-uh after the 3-person panel in the Fifth Circuit ruled that the redistricting there was racist and illegal.

Then I read something a little while ago about Trump / Bondi “deciding” to back off on seizing control of the police in the D.C. area, but it turns out that a judge said no way, that’s not legal.  Then they “backed down”, but that implies they had a choice.

BREAKING: A judge halted Trump’s bid to seize control of D.C. police, saying AG Pam Bondi likely broke federal law by trying to replace the chief.

Bondi backed down, scrapping the takeover but keeping orders on immigration + homelessness.

This post is in: Open Threads

One more anonymous Balloon Juice Angel has come forward with a $1,000 Angel match.

That means that anything anyone donated after I put up my post at 5:23 and until the thermometer hits $23,750 is matched by a Balloon Juice Angel AND the external match.

So 4x matching for anything donated this starting at 5:23 pm blog time.

THE MATH

Once we get to $23,750, friend of the blog Andrew will write his $5k check, and our other BJ Angel will add her $1k to the thermometer, taking us to $29,750, and one of our BJ peeps mailed her $250 check a couple of weeks ago, and that gets us to our $30,000!

As I type this, we need just $2,628.89 more in the thermometer in order to reach the full $76,000 for Four Directions for Virginia!   ($36k directly from us, $40k from people who were willing to match the funds we could raise.)

All 4x matched.

If we can do that, we will get the full $40,000 of external match that was found for us!

I don’t want to count our chickens before they are hatched, but it looks like we are still the little engine that could.

It is important to remember that Putin speaks English in addition to his native Russian as well as German, which he needed for his KGB assignment. His English is accented, but he’s fluent. He’s been pulling the hearing problem followed by funny facial expressions for decades at engagements with American and European leaders, he knows exactly what he was asked. Ushakov and Lavrov, who attended as Putin’s deputies, are also fluent in English. Neither Witkoff, nor Rubio who were attending as Trump’s deputies speak Russian, which was part of the problem that emerged from Witkoff’s meeting with Putin last week. The Russians had a huge advantage in the room today. It is also important to remember that Trump is not fluent in English or any other language known to humankind.

Putin says he’s reached an “agreement” with Trump but no details have been disclosed yet

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) August 15, 2025 at 7:00 PM

Here is where Putin mentioned an “agreement” (or at least the translator did)

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) August 15, 2025 at 7:23 PM

Of course not. It is unlikely they ever will other than the ones that apply to Ukraine.

Putin: “Today when President Trump says that if he was the president in 2022, there would be no war, and I’m quite sure it would indeed be so. I can confirm it. Overall, me and President Trump have build a very good and businesslike contact.”

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) August 15, 2025 at 7:05 PM

And the US and global news media get’s used as a black PSYOP to once again launder more agitprop for Putin and Trump.

Trump: “I’ve always had a fantastic relationship with President Putin, w/ Vladimir. We were interfered with by the Russia Russia Russia hoax that made it a little tougher to deal with, but he understood it. I think he’s probably seen things like that over the course of his career. He’s seen it all.”

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) August 15, 2025 at 7:06 PM

Trump: “We’re gonna stop thousands of people a week from being killed, and President Putin wants to see that as much as I do.”

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) August 15, 2025 at 7:07 PM

Considering that Russia was attacking Ukrainian civilian targets with ballistic missiles throughout the meeting and presser, that’s not going to happen because Putin doesn’t want to see that at all, let alone as much as you do.

You’ll want to scroll to the 26;43 mark for it’s start.

I think this pretty much sums it all up:

All of the optics from this Alaska meeting put Putin on — at least! — equal standing with the president of the United States. An incredible gift to him at no cost.

— Philip Bump (@pbump.com) August 15, 2025 at 3:48 PM

Fox News Reporter Jacqui Heinrich: The way that it felt in the room was not good. It did not seem like things went well. And it seemed like Putin came in and steam rolled, got right into what he wanted to say and got his photo next to the president and then left

Ukraine Is Ready to Work as Productively as Possible to Bring the War to an End, and We Count on a Strong Position from America – Address by the President

15 August 2025 – 19:02

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

A brief update for today. Of course, I am receiving reports from our intelligence and diplomats regarding the preparations for the meeting in Alaska. Regarding what Putin is bringing to the table. We are also receiving reports from Ukraine’s regions following Russian strikes. Sumy – a Russian strike on the central market. Dnipro region – strikes on cities and enterprises. Zaporizhzhia, Kherson region, Donetsk region – deliberate Russian strikes. The war continues, and it is precisely because there is neither an order nor even a signal that Moscow is preparing to end this war. On the day of negotiations, they are killing as well. And that speaks volumes.

Recently, we’ve discussed with the U.S. and Europeans what can truly work. Everyone needs a just end to the war. Ukraine is ready to work as productively as possible to bring the war to an end, and we count on a strong position from America. Everything will depend on this – the Russians factor in American strength. Make no mistake – strength. We continue coordinating with our partners in Europe – I spoke with French President Macron today. The team is also in contact. The time difference with Alaska is eleven hours, so tomorrow will start early for everyone in Europe. We are preparing for the upcoming discussions. Russia must end the war that it itself started and has been dragging out for years. The killings must stop. A meeting of leaders is needed – at the very least, Ukraine, America, and the Russian side – and it is precisely in such a format that effective decisions are possible. Security guarantees are needed. Lasting peace is very much needed. Everyone knows the key objectives. I want to thank everyone who is helping to achieve real results.

I held a Staff meeting – both on the current situation at the front and on providing for our army. And also on the long term plans – there must be a contract army, and the transition to this must begin now. The Commander-in-Chief reported on our active operations in all sectors, especially Pokrovsk and Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian warriors are clearing positions in the Dobropillia area of the occupier, and this is important. There are results. Russia’s intention was to demonstrate strength ahead of Alaska, but in fact, for the occupier, this ends with its destruction. I thank our 79th and 82nd Air Assault Brigades, which are fighting there, in the Dobropillia sector. The 2nd Battalion of the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade. Thank you, guys. The 14th Operational Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, thank you to the fighters of Azov, also the 32nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, and the 38th Marine Brigade – they are defending positions there, in the Donetsk region. I am grateful to all of you! Gratitude also to the 1st and 425th Assault Regiments. I want to commend our warriors in the Sumy region – first and foremost, the 95th Brigade and the 225th Assault Regiment. Thank you!

Today, I held a meeting with our diplomats – the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office team. We are counting on parliamentary diplomacy – today, I thanked the Chairman of the Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, for his active engagement. Now we need to update our foreign policy plan for the coming months. I instructed that an audit be carried out of our work with partners within the framework of the defense coalitions, the resilience coalitions – all of our agreements. Everything must work. I also instructed that specific individuals be designated as responsible for steps in our key areas: if there is a specific project with partners, there must be a specific person responsible for the success of that project. On Monday, I expect a report from the Government on the updated plan of foreign policy steps.

I thank everyone who stands with us, with our people, with Ukraine! I thank all those working for the independence of our state and for our strong positions.

Glory to Ukraine!

Another highly successful strike hits Russia’s oil industry: the main war-profit engine fueling the war. Multiple sources of fire and visible smoke from separate locations at the Syzran refinery following a drone attack suggest that the strike was effective and impactful

2/ This is not the first attack in recent weeks. This week, the Saratov refinery halted operations following a drone strike. Earlier in August, The Moscow Times reported that Ryazan refinery shut half of its units, while the Novokuibyshevsk refinery stopped intake after attacks.

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) August 15, 2025 at 1:15 AM

3/ Based on our visual and preliminary geolocation analysis, which we are working to confirm, it appears that the flames are coming not just from storage tanks but from the main units area. We suspect that at least two critical objects have been damaged, which we will name once confirmed.

The blue horizontal line running from Vilne to Sofiivka is the Ukrainian military cutting Russia’s line from west to east.

For those wondering, this was Azov who smacked the Russians hard from the side. Now we have to see if they can roll the separated lines up.

The 1st Azov Corps reports Ukrainian forces halted Russian advances on the Pokrovsk axis over the past three days, cleared six settlements, and inflicted heavy losses on Russian troops—271 killed, 101 wounded, 13 captured, and dozens of vehicles and weapons destroyed.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) August 15, 2025 at 12:02 PM

From The Kyiv Independent:

An explosion on Aug. 15 destroyed a workshop at the Elastik gunpowder plant in Ryazan Oblast in Russia, killing at least five people and injuring at least 100, regional governor Pavel Malkov said on Aug. 15.

The blast occurred during the day and was followed by a fire that completely destroyed the gunpowder-producing facility.

“An emergency response headquarters has been set up, and all departments and emergency services are working,” Malkov wrote on Telegram.

Russian officials have not named the cause of the explosion, but preliminary accounts reported by Russian media point to possible safety violations in the workshop.

Local Telegram channels reported that 10 of the 20 injured victims are in serious condition, while some people may still be trapped under debris.

The plant suffered a similar accident in October 2021, when an explosion at a workshop operated by private explosives manufacturer Razryad killed 17 people.

According to the independent Russian Telegram channel Astra, Razryad rents space from Elastik and produces industrial explosives, including from recycled munitions.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect the latest casualty figures in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, as reported by acting Governor Alexander Khinshtein.

Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces on Aug. 14 struck the Russian port of Olya in Astrakhan Oblast, a region in southern Russia at the Caspian Sea coast, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported.

The attack targeted what Kyiv says is a key logistics hub for Iranian-made military supplies bound for Russia.

Iran has been a key ally to Moscow and provided the country with ballistic missiles and thousands of Shahed kamikaze drones for its war against Ukraine. Russia has also launched production of its own Shahed equivalents called Gerans.

The Olya port is used by Moscow to receive Shahed-type drone components and munitions from Iran, according to the military. Preliminary reports indicate that the vessel Port Olya 4, loaded with such cargo, was hit in the attack. The extent of the damage is reportedly still being assessed.

The port lies roughly 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the front line in Ukraine.

The strike is part of Ukraine’s broader campaign to degrade Russia’s ability to launch air attacks and sustain its war effort, the General Staff said.

Russian authorities reported attacks elsewhere in the country the same day, including an alleged deadly drone strike in Kursk on Aug. 14. Acting Governor Alexander Khinshtein claimed a Ukrainian drone hit an apartment building on Soyuznaya Street, killing one person and injuring 12 others, including a 15-year-old.

The blast and fire allegedly damaged the top four floors of the building and shattered windows in neighboring houses and a school.

Ukraine has not commented on the attack. The Kyiv Independent cannot verify these claims.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses shot down 53 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple regions, including 13 over Kursk Oblast, 11 over Rostov Oblast, seven over Samara Oblast, six over Belgorod Oblast, five over Oryol Oblast, four each over the Bryansk and Voronezh oblasts, one over Saratov Oblast, one over Kalmykia, and one over the Azov Sea.

In Samara Oblast, an oil refinery in Syzran caught fire after a reported drone strike early on Aug. 15. Syzran hosts one of Rosneft’s largest facilities, which supplies fuel to Russian forces in central and southern Russia, according to pro-Ukrainian Telegram channel Crimean Wind.

That’s enough for tonight.

From the Associated Press live feed, “Talks between Trump and Putin during Alaska summit on Russia-Ukraine war have ended”:

Talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have ended after more than two and a half hours. The leaders met in a three-on-three meeting along with top advisers for a high-stakes summit in Alaska that could determine the trajectory of the war in Ukraine and the fate of European security.

Trump’s allies have cast the U.S. president as a heavyweight negotiator who can find a way to bring the slaughter to a close, something he used to boast he could do quickly. Trump has threatened “very severe consequences” if Putin does not agree to stop the war after the summit.

There are significant risks for Trump: By bringing Putin onto U.S. soil, the president is giving Russia’s leader the validation he desires after his ostracization following his invasion of Ukraine 3 1/2 years ago. Any success is far from assured, especially as Russia and Ukraine remain far apart in their demands for peace…

President Putin, how can the U.S. trust your word?

Virginia On the Horizon

This post is in: Open Threads

If we are going to meet our goal for Four Directions in Virginia, we need about $5,000 more in donations.  That $5,000 will be externally matched, so that will give them $10,000 more to work with, as the ONLY entity contacting Native voters in Virginia.

Four Directions is the only entity working with the Native vote in Virginia.

The Native American voting-age population exceeds 160,000!

Friend of the blog Andrew has a $1,500 to match the donations you guys made earlier this week, and he is willing to make that a $5,000 check if we can get the thermometer to  $24,250. (I’ll share the details of the math in the comments.)

Donate

If we reach our goal and earn all the matching funds, that will fund over 3,000 hours of direct  contact reaching the 160,000 voting-age Native people in Virginia.

Let’s help Virginia kick some serious Republican ass in November.
