Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This blog will pay for itself.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

The lights are all blinking red.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Well now where are we supposed to get our misinformation? https://t.co/Zg6ZLREgna

— Seth Masket (@smotus) January 4, 2022

Per the Washington Post:

… The former president had been planning to speak at his private Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida on Thursday night.

According to a person familiar with the matter, Trump wanted to make a scene and deride reporters at the event but had been told repeatedly by his advisers that it could be the kind of coverage he doesn’t want. Trump also did not know exactly what he wanted his message to be, and his team was taken aback by how many reporters were planning on attending, according to the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

“It was going to be awful, awful press,” a Trump adviser said. The adviser, who was not authorized to speak publicly about deliberations surrounding the event, said Trump had originally announced the news conference on a lark and without a plan in place.

A Trump spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

The Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol was launched by a mob trying to stop the confirmation of Joe Biden’s electoral college win. It resulted in five deaths and injured about 140 members of law enforcement…

Open Thread: Rooting Out the Insurrectionists

The lawmakers investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection are preparing to go public in the coming months. Televised hearings and reports will show what the committee has learned about the riot and former President Trump's attempts to overturn the election. https://t.co/zaPrs7FCTb

— The Associated Press (@AP) January 2, 2022

… In the coming months, members of the panel will start to reveal their findings against the backdrop of the former president and his allies’ persistent efforts to whitewash the riots and reject suggestions that he helped instigate them. The committee also faces the burden of trying to persuade the American public that their conclusions are fact-based and credible.

But the nine lawmakers — seven Democrats and two Republicans — are united in their commitment to tell the full story of Jan. 6, and they are planning televised hearings and reports that will bring their findings out into the open.

Their goal is not only to show the severity of the riot, but also to make a clear connection between the attack and Trump’s brazen pressure on the states and Congress to overturn Joe Biden’s legitimate election as president…

While the fundamental facts of Jan. 6 are known, the committee says the extraordinary trove of material they have collected — 35,000 pages of records so far, including texts, emails and phone records from people close to Trump — is fleshing out critical details of the worst attack on the Capitol in two centuries, which played out on live television.

They hope to fill in the blanks about the preparations before the attack, the financing behind the Jan. 6 rally that preceded it and the extensive White House campaign to overturn the 2020 election. They are also investigating what Trump himself was doing as his supporters fought their way into the Capitol.

show full post on front page

True accountability may be fleeting. Congressional investigations are not criminal cases and lawmakers cannot dole out punishments. Even as the committee works, Trump and his allies continue to push lies about election fraud while working to place similarly minded officials at all levels of state and local government.

“I think that the challenge that we face is that the attacks on our democracy are continuing — they didn’t come to an end on Jan. 6,” said another panel member, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., also chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Still, the lawmakers hope they can present the public with a thorough accounting that captures what could have been “an even more serious and deeper constitutional crisis,” as Cheney put it…

The panel also is focusing on the preparations for the Jan. 6 rally near the White House where Trump told his supporters to “fight like hell” — and how the rioters may have planned to block the electoral count if they had been able to get their hands on the electoral ballots.

They need to amplify to the public, Thompson said, “that it was an organized effort to change the outcome of the election by bringing people to Washington … and ultimately if all else failed, weaponize the people who came by sending them to the Capitol.”

About 90% of the witnesses called by the committee have cooperated, Thompson said, despite the defiance of high-profile Trump allies such as Steve Bannon and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. Lawmakers said they have been effective at gathering information from other sources in part because they share a unity of purpose rarely seen in a congressional investigation…

Liz Cheney, and her fellow Never-Trumpists, have every reason to try and convince the rest of us that TFG was a one-off grifter who somehow, inexplicably, wormed his way into the too-trusting Republican party — that disposing the Trump crime family would cure the rot. This is pure self-interest, but I’m not going to reject her assistance in the defenestration:

Say what you will about PapaDick Cheney's daughter.

Vladislav Klyushin Traveled Freely in Europe, Until He Didn't Travel in Europe Freelyhttps://t.co/K7ETSWEQ25

DOJ **has** documents proving GRU was behind the hack. What it is not known to have are details abt how Manafort or Hillary's stolen data were used.

— emptywheel (@emptywheel) January 3, 2022

… [I]t’s possible that the US waited to arrest him until they were done with their investigation, but these past interactions with western spooks suggest something else was behind the timing of his arrest. Similarly, the explanation offered by the Swiss lawyer — that the US only learned of Klyushin’s trip to Switzerland by an auspiciously timed hack of his phone — makes no sense, given the access to travel records the US would routinely have even without having someone targeted under Section 702, as Klyushin easily could have been.

The story leaves big questions about whether Klyushin wanted to be turned over or not. In addition to the open question about whether Klyushin told Russian authorities about the recruitment attempts, Bloomberg describes that Klyushin’s Swiss lawyer mailed his appeal of the extradition to the European Court of Human Rights rather than faxing it, with the result that the appeal arrived only after he had already been transferred to US custody.

But it’s hard to believe that Klyushin wanted to be extradited when he was arrested last March. That’s because his family returned to Russia at the end of their 10-day luxury vacation, which they wouldn’t have done if Klyushin had been planning to defect to the US (if one can start using the term again). So if Klyushin came to decide he wanted to be extradited over the nine months while he was held in Switzerland, he may have only come to that conclusion upon receiving more details about the charges against him, possibly including details that might expose him to the ire of the Kremlin…

There may be a better explanation for the timing than an auspicious hack, though. As described, Klyushin’s trip to Switzerland was likely his first trip to a US extradition partner after Merrick Garland was sworn in as Attorney General on March 11, 2021, eight days before FBI obtained the arrest warrant for Klyushin.

And while the US has documentary evidence that GRU did the hack, what they hadn’t yet obtained when DOJ obtained the indictment against Yermakov and other GRU officers in 2018 was something far more important: what Russia did with two sets of data — the campaign strategy and polling information turned over from Paul Manafort and the analytics stolen from Hillary through the entire month of September. There’s certainly reason to believe DOJ knows more now than they did in 2018. Last April (so shortly after the arrest warrant for Kluyshin), Treasury stated as fact that the information Konstantin Kilimnik obtained from Manafort did get shared with Russian intelligence, even while asserting that Kilimnik was himself a spook. But how that information was shared and what happened with it has not been made public.

And those are the kinds of questions you might not raise aggressively until after Trump was gone.

At some point early on, Klyushin knew he’d be dead meat if he went back to Russia. Now, which innocent American bystander will Putin kidnap in retaliation and to try to set up an exchange? https://t.co/jkMbaqCSB0

It’d be funnier, if not for the whole ‘bring down the government’ parts…

Federal judge refuses to dismiss an indictment charging 4 alleged leaders of the far-right Proud Boys with conspiring to attack the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. https://t.co/hQP9XafqOE

— NBC News (@NBCNews) December 29, 2021

… U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly on Tuesday rejected defense attorneys’ arguments that the four men — Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, Zachary Rehl and Charles Donohoe — are charged with conduct that is protected by the First Amendment right to free speech.

Kelly said the defendants had many nonviolent ways to express their opinions about the 2020 presidential election.

“Defendants are not, as they argue, charged with anything like burning flags, wearing black armbands, or participating in mere sit-ins or protests,” Kelly wrote in his 43-page ruling. “Moreover, even if the charged conduct had some expressive aspect, it lost whatever First Amendment protection it may have had.”

Nordean, Biggs, Rehl and Donohoe were indicted in March on charges including conspiracy and obstructing an official proceeding. All four of them remain jailed while they await a trial scheduled for May.

Defense lawyers also argued that the obstruction charge doesn’t apply to their clients’ cases because Congress’ certification of the Electoral College vote was not an “official proceeding.” Kelly disagreed…

On the morning of Jan. 6, Proud Boys members met at the Washington Monument and marched to the Capitol before President Donald Trump finished addressing thousands of supporters near the White House.

Just before Congress convened a joint session to certify the election results, a group of Proud Boys followed a crowd of people who breached barriers at a pedestrian entrance to the Capitol grounds, the indictment says. Several Proud Boys also entered the Capitol building itself after the mob smashed windows and forced open doors.

More than 700 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the Capitol riot. At least 165 of them have pleaded guilty, mostly to misdemeanor offenses punishable by a maximum of six months’ imprisonment.

And that guy absolutely would have brought it (or other military long guns visible in his indictment photos) had DC not had strict open carry laws that would have prevented him and the countless other gunfuckers Trump collected from getting within a mile of the Capitol.

— zeddy (@Zeddary) December 28, 2021

May seem trivial but evidence that event organizers arranged to transport key people much further closer to the Capitol…and then (the likely case) that transportation being used to assault the Capitol…could be significant to proving a conspiracy.

Open Thread: Renfield Meadows’ Time in the… Spotlight

by Anne Laurie|  December 13, 20216:13 pm| 195 Comments

This post is in: Investigations Into Violent Extremist Attacks, Open Threads, Republican Venality, Trump Crime Cartel

One of the harshest realities of all that we’re learning about the lead up to Jan. 6 is not that Trump was perpetrating the Big Lie to hold onto power & avoid prosecution, but that so many in his circle were gung-ho about helping him commit this coup & end our democracy.

— Steven Beschloss (@StevenBeschloss) December 11, 2021

Jan. 6 panel: Mark Meadows said National Guard would "protect pro Trump people" https://t.co/cJEr9YrK8i

— Axios (@axios) December 13, 2021

TL, DR:

The Jan. 6 select committee investigating the Capitol riot released a report and resolution Sunday outlining its recommendation to hold former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows in contempt of Congress.

Why it matters: The report alleges that Meadows sent an email Jan. 5 “to an individual about the events on January 6 and said that the National Guard would be present to ‘protect pro Trump people’ and that many more would be available on standby.”…

The big picture: The report recommending Meadows be held in contempt of Congress comes after he failed to appear before the panel last month and his attorney announced last week that he would no longer cooperate with House investigators, citing his belief that he’s protected by executive privilege…

What’s next: The select committee is expected vote to recommend charges of contempt of Congress against Meadows this week, before a full House vote takes place, per AP…

"The messages also describe numerous contacts with members of Congress about Trump’s efforts to recruit state lawmakers and encourage them to help overturn the election results." https://t.co/TTSqBSSuUI

— Catherine Rampell (@crampell) December 13, 2021

Meadows was always an earnest little worker bee, more dogged than gifted, and he doesn’t seem to have inspired much loyalty among his fellows — in the party, or in the media:

show full post on front page

… It’s unclear who Meadows, the former White House chief of staff to Donald Trump, relayed the information to or whether it was the result of any insight provided by the Defense Department. But the exchange is of high interest to congressional investigators probing whether Trump played a role in the three-hour delay between the Capitol Police’s urgent request for Guard support and their ultimate arrival at the Capitol, which had been overrun by pro-Trump rioters. The comment also aligns with testimony from former Defense Secretary Christopher Miller, who said that in a Jan. 3 conversation with Trump, the then-president told him to “do whatever was necessary to protect the demonstrators that were executing their constitutionally protected rights.”…

The messages also describe numerous contacts with members of Congress about Trump’s efforts to recruit state lawmakers and encourage them to help overturn the election results. They also included questions about Meadows’ exchanges with members of Congress as they pressed him urgently to issue a statement telling rioters on Jan. 6 to exit the Capitol…

BREAKING: THREAD: a new 51-page document issued by the J6 committee reveals some new info about Mark Meadows. First, Meadows spoke with Patel and Chris Miller NONSTOP on 1/6, and knows if and when trump spoke to them about National Guard deployment 1/ pic.twitter.com/vOUoPfP5dX

— Mueller, She Wrote (@MuellerSheWrote) December 13, 2021

Note the several pages explaining the due diligence & good faith efforts the committee employed to give Meadows every opportunity to comply. That will strengthen their criminal referral to DoJ. Pages 12-20. And the entire document is here: END https://t.co/VLWVWjRKcx

— Mueller, She Wrote (@MuellerSheWrote) December 13, 2021

Meadows needs to start worrying about being indicted for far more serious charges. He needs competent legal counsel to advise him to fully cooperate against Trump to preserve his freedom. He should read up on Watergate which was a walk in the park compared to this situation.
