I Honestly Don’t Understand

by John Cole|  December 1, 200910:20 pm| 152 Comments

This post is in: War on Terror aka GSAVE®

What are the right-wingers upset about? They got everything they wanted. I could understand why some on the other side of the aisle are mad, but not those on the right. McChrystal made a request, Obama gave him everything he wanted, and the troops are going to be there faster than he even requested.

And yet they are mad at Obama. I just simply don’t get it. I don’t even get the anger over the “timeline,” because unless I am completely forgetting things, the Bush surge originally only planned for the troops to be there for a set period before scaling back from the surge. Otherwise it wouldn’t be a surge, it would simply be a major escalation. The plan was to surge the troops to Baghdad, stabilize the region, and then withdraw.

What am I not understanding? What am I missing?

That’s It, I’m Done With Twitter

Which of these tweets is more annoying- Major General Josh Trevino:

trevino

You can go to his feed where he repeatedly claims Bush won his war. I guess that means we can withdraw from Iraq now without being called traitors. Josh is now busy making fat jokes. All in a days work for the up and comers in the GOP.

Or this one:

Twitter sure was a major victory for civilization.

I missed the speech and now have to rush to Walgreens to get bandages because I sliced my thumb open while taking out the trash.

Reactions (to the speech, not my thumb dripping blood into the keyboard).

Things To Do/Look For In Obama’s Speech

by John Cole|  December 1, 20096:19 pm| 325 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics

I’m going to miss the speech because I have something else to do, but I do want those of you watching the speech to do a couple things as he speaks. Every time Obama says something like “We need to finish what we started” you need to yell out loud “BECAUSE BUSH AND CHENEY DIDN’T.”

It should go something like this:

Obama: I’m asking the Pentagon to send 34,000 additional troops to help secure the region

You: BECAUSE BUSH AND CHENEY DIDN’T.

You get the idea. Bonus points if you do this at a Young Republicans meeting or a 9/12 meet-up.

Next, I want to remind everyone that no analysis of tonight’s speech of Obama will be complete without getting the deep thoughts of Liz Cheney and reading Sarah Palin’s facebook page and twitter feed.

Every time a member of the progressive left is brought on to attack Obama from the left, remind yourself that this is a good thing and might move the Overton window back to the left a little.

And finally, if you see any of the following people on any network other than FOX being asked for their opinion, finish your drink:

Michael O’Hanlon
Dan Senor
Karl Rove
Joe Lieberman
President McCain
Frank Gaffney
Bill Kristol
Ann Coulter
Anyone from Red State

Banksta, banksta

This sounds like a bad Law & Order episode waiting to happen:

I called Goldman Sachs spokesman Lucas van Praag to ask whether it’s true that Goldman partners feel they need handguns to protect themselves from the angry proletariat. He didn’t call me back. The New York Police Department has told me that “as a preliminary matter” it believes some of the bankers I inquired about do have pistol permits. The NYPD also said it will be a while before it can name names.

[….]

No, talk of Goldman and guns plays right into the way Wall- Streeters like to think of themselves. Even those who were bailed out believe they are tough, macho Clint Eastwoods of the financial frontier, protecting the fistful of dollars in one hand with the Glock in the other. The last thing they want is to be so reasonably paid that the peasants have no interest in lynching them.

Why Didn’t Anyone Else Think of This?

by John Cole|  December 1, 20095:45 pm| 53 Comments

This post is in: Bring on the Brawndo!, Democratic Stupidity

Via Atrios, more wisdom from Ben Nelson:

In lieu of a “war tax” to pay for a troop increase in Afghanistan, Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson (NE) is proposing war bonds.

“We didn’t have a war tax in the second World War,” Nelson said, and instead the government sold Americans bonds.”People invested in their country, in that fashion [and] made a lot of sense back then. I don’t know why it might not make sense today, certainly in lieu of jumping to tax.”

This is the fine mind the Democrats have given the veto power over their health care legislation. This is the man who has the last say on the most significant piece of legislation Democrats will craft in decades. This is the man who holds the electoral future of all Democrats hostage.

And that man is an idiot.
