Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Come on, man.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

The willow is too close to the house.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Late Evening Open Thread: Mark Hamill-ception

by Adam L Silverman|  November 30, 201711:34 pm| 142 Comments

Not quite sure where everyone’s gone (where have all the front pagers gone, long time passing…), but it is clearly time for a fresh, clean thread. So here’s a video of Mark Hamill in his voice actor job voicing himself and two of his better known cartoon characters: DC Comics Joker from Batman the Animated Series and the Trickster from the original Flash live action TV show, the animated Justice League Unlimited, and the new Flash live action TV show. But wait, there’s more… Hamill is also voicing Swamp Thing too! So that’s four Mark Hamill voice acting appearances all in one cartoon short! Hamill does Hamill doing Hamill while being Hamill!

Little triggers

They keep pulling me back in:

A bill that once seemed primed to sail through the Senate suddenly has a problem.

Surrounding Corker on the Senate floor were leadership figures like Sens. Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, John Barasso, and John Thune. But Corker spent much of the time arguing with Pennsylvania Rep. Pat Toomey, an ardent supply-sider who’s been frustrated with Corker’s efforts to install a “trigger” to recoup revenue if the tax bill doesn’t vastly grow the economy. Other members, like Idaho Sen. Jim Risch, Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman came in and out of the huddle. Corker at one point walked over to the Democratic side to speak with Maine Sen. Angus King, on whose motion they were voting. McConnell separately walked over to Johnson, whose has his own set of concerns with the bill.

[….]

“It doesn’t look like the trigger’s going to work, according to the parliamentarian,” Cornyn told a flood of reporters when he exited the chamber. “So we have an alternative—frankly, a tax increase that we don’t want to do—to try to address Sen. Corker’s concerns.”

I know these Republican Senators think if they vote for this, they’ll get cushy jobs as lobbyist when voters throw their sorry asses out of office. They should remember something else: when that sweet lobbying gig is over, they will rot in hell for eternity.

Good News Thread

Humdog requested this, and I’m always up for good news.

Can we please get a thread where all can share good news. I don’t have any myself, but I know Helen in Eire has a job offer and efgoldman is home from hospital. Hearing people I “know” are still experiencing positive things would surely cheer me up, and a clean thread for it may be helpful when all else seems to be a shit tsunami.

A friend wanted me to pick up four bottles of brandy from a local distillery and send them to her, with the payment of one bottle to me. Which was pretty nice. I have the bottles and will send three out tomorrow.

The photo is from my trip last month to White Sands National Monument.

I’ve had a minor cold this week but seem to be improving today. I got a bunch of things done. Also, for those in the area, I’ll be giving a talk on North Korea on Monday. Got part of that prepared. And the kittehs have been unusually delightful the past two days.

What good is happening in your life?

If the Republican tax bill passes, it will be a dark moment in our nation’s history. Truly, the fact it is even close to passing makes today a dark moment in our nation’s history. There’s not a way to describe what’s going on that doesn’t sound sappy or melodramatic.

Days like this can be very depressing and very demotivating. So let’s remember the day that Obamacare passed. Pelosi’s not perfect, Obamacare’s not perfect, but that was a great day.

Like every good liberal blogger, I’m obsessed with “The Wire”. So I will close with some approximate Jimmy McNulty: “Trumps’s an asshole. He does not get to win. WE get to win!”

Overrun with Vermin (Band Name & Open Thread)

So, this is real:

White House maintenance orders reveal cockroaches, ants and mice infestations

NBC 4 Washington, which obtained the hundreds of work orders, reports that there have been a number of requests to deal with vermin in the White House, including mice in the situation room and the White House Navy mess food service area.

Other requests reported cockroach infestations in at least four parts of the White House, and a colony of ants living in chief of staff John Kelly’s office…

Some of the requests were more mundane in nature, including a redecoration of national security adviser H.R. McMaster’s office and a new toilet seat for the Oval Office bathroom. That last request was directed to be completed “after hours please.”

They should hold the McMaster redecorating order — the guy who called Trump “a fucking moron” is on his way out (see post downstairs), so the dude who called Trump “an idiot” with the “mind of a kindergartner” can’t be far behind. As for that toilet seat, surely the moron/idiot/kindergartner specified gold.

Here, Rex! Here, Boy!

This post is in: Goddamned Traitors, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity, Trump Crime Cartel, Trump-Russia, Assholes, General Stupidity

According to multiple sources, the guy who put the “SOS” in “Secretary of State,” Rex Tillerson, is getting shit-canned shortly. He’ll be replaced by Trump toady Mike Pompeo, currently heading the CIA. Ambulatory Adam’s Apple Tom Cotton will take over Spook Central.

This isn’t too surprising; Rexxon did call Trump “a fucking moron,” and from what I gather, the only relevant expertise Tillerson possessed for the job was knowing how to get around the sanctions that are crimping Vladimir Putin’s oil profits.

With the section of the State Department that oversees sanctions now dismantled, who needs Rexxon anyway? Time to shuffle the ass-kissers around.

But watching these clowns usher Tillerson out the door might yield some entertainment value. Por ejemplo:

Asked during a Thursday morning meeting with the crown prince of Bahrain, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, whether he wants Tillerson to remain as secretary of state, Trump told reporters, “He’s here. Rex is here.”

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement, “As the president just said, ‘Rex is here.’ There are no personnel announcements at this time. Secretary Tillerson continues to lead the State Department and the entire cabinet is focused on completing this incredibly successful first year of President Trump’s administration.”

“Rex is here!” Lolz! I hope that shitbag Tillerson feels every ounce of the humiliation in that. Moreover, let’s hope the other plutocrats in Trump’s orbit see this as an “It Could Happen to You” after-school special.

The cries of distress from career personnel at the State Department received a fair amount of attention recently. Pompeo won’t fix anything, of course; weakening U.S. influence abroad is a core part of the TrumPutin agenda.

But they can blame it all on Rex now. And Trump will rest easier — he doesn’t need a loyalty oath from fawning sycophant Mike Pompeo, who has already demonstrated a willingness to distort CIA intelligence to protect Trump.

I’m mad as hell that the tax bill has gotten as far it has, even if it doesn’t pass. Seems like a good time to give money.

Here’s the fund for Doug Jones

Goal Thermometer

Give here to a fund that gets split between all eventual Democratic nominees in House districts currently held by Republicans.
