In the “who would you like to have a beer with” primary, I’d pick Kamala Harris. She’s genuinely funny:

Tonight’s debate moderators have to do the “show of hands” question about eliminating private health insurance tonight too, right? In a town hall in January, Harris seemed to indicate she was in favor of getting rid of private insurance, but then clarified a couple of months later that she would be in favor of allowing supplemental coverage through private insurance.

I won’t be surprised if Warren does a similar climb-down after coming out in favor of eliminating private insurance last night. She needs to do one of her trademark plans on healthcare and lay it all out there, IMO.

Sorry to step on Alain, but it looks like we need a SCOTUS open thread since we may be about to find out if the chief justice openly embraces partisanship in the service of white supremacy. I’m following along at SCOTUSblog.

ETA: The majority punts on partisan gerrymandering. Justice Kagan’s dissent: “the partisan gerrymanders here debased and dishonored our democracy, turning upside-down the core American idea that all governmental power derives from the people.”

ETA 2: Good-ish news on the census question? From SCOTUSblog: “The majority upholds the district court’s remand to the agency for further explanation of its decision.”

ETA 3: “The Chief Justice explains that, although it is fine when an agency has stated and unstated reasons for a decision — and fine with a new administration comes in with policy preferences — here, the only stated reason for the decision to add the citizenship question seems contrived.”

Ya think? It sounds like the Court Republicans are saying the rule change is fine, but the agency needs to come up with a less obvious lie to justify it.

Not Quite the Tra-La-La I Was Expecting!

Folks,

If you’re of a certain age, then when you were young, certain television programs from a certain pair of brothers provided lots of enjoyment and confusion, what with all kinds of trippy characters and costumes that seemed cast-offs from Star Trek or Doctor Who.  Yes, I’m talking about the wild, wonderful Kroftt Brothers.

 

Now I was one of perhaps a few dozen folks back in the mid-1990’s when Saturday Morning: Cartoon’s Greatest Hits came out and then proceeded to stay up all night and day for a weekend to watch reruns of all those great shows on, I think, TBS.  It was a hoot.  FYI – this is a great album and I still listen to it every couple of months.

 

Anyway, the reason for this post is not to dwell on childhood entertainment and memories of simpler times. I wanted to share some crazy – good, and just crazy – news: there is a new movie coming out later this year (date TBD) called The Banana Splits. This is based on the original show which mixed live action costumed folks with cartoons.

Hearing that the trailer was out, I had to watch…and I did not realize this was a horror movie! OMG I cannot wait! Looks like direct to video and then a semi-permanent run on SciFY will be its fate. But wahoo, this looks like a neat remix of our childhood with some weird and scary stuff.  Excellent.

So, you know, I just had to share – enjoy!

Seems like there’s a Trump metaphor lurking in there somewhere…

Meanwhile, one debate down, another — with the “heavy hitters”, some people say — same time, same place, 9pm EDT on NBC’s weird tardis stage in Miami.

The Washington Post has a full transcript of Wednesday’s debate, if you’re looking for one.

First-night Hot Take Summary, from what I can gather: Julian Castro greatly improved his chances for a Cabinet position, or maybe even the VP slot — unless the guy at the head of the ticket is Beto O’Rourke, and that’s looking somewhat less likely. Also, if #NeverTrump Repubs got to pick a Democratic candidate, it would be Amy Klobuchar — and AFAICT they’re not being snide or sneaky, she just seems like someone Tom Nichols and his friends could be comfortable with (although this may be a case of ‘I’d vote for a woman, just not *that* woman’… ) And, blessedly, among the sane people, even those who don’t much approve of Elizabeth Warren grudgingly admit that she ‘didn’t disgrace herself’ and ‘seemed to be popular with the audience’…

On the Road and In Your Backyard

Good Morning All,

As we move closer to the new site launch, I wanted to remind you to submit things now via the form or to hold off until the new site is live.  The old email address is dead and until the new site is live, there’s no replacement.

I will push all submissions I get into drafts so that, when the new site launches, there’s a bunch of posts ready to go while the dust settles. I don’t expect the new site to launch immediately, but that time is fast approaching, and when it’s ready, it will birth. Now is the time to “stack up” some submissions to ease any content woes when the time comes.
