Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

“woke” is the new caravan.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

All hail the time of the bunny!

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Let there be snark.

First ad of 2024 dropped this morning.

Open Thread: I'm With Them

Also, mark your calendars:

Jan 3 (Reuters) – President Joe Biden will mark the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 attacks on the U.S Capitol with a political speech the day before to make the case that Republican Donald Trump poses an existential threat to democracy, Biden’s re-election campaign said on Wednesday.

Biden’s campaign said he will speak near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, where George Washington established headquarters during the Revolutionary War. The speech site, Montgomery County Community College, is about 15 miles away.

Why are you voting for Biden-Harris?

House Oversight Committee (Finally!) Submits Solid Evidence of Presidential Corruption

by Betty Cracker|  January 4, 202411:32 am| 74 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Elections 2024, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

Ever since the GOP took control of the House, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has doggedly pursued evidence of a foreign influence peddling scheme implicating President Biden. Team GOP has combed through bank records and tax receipts, compelled witness testimony and pawed through the digital wreckage of the president’s son’s life to find evidence that Joe Biden benefited from family members’ business dealings.

But things kept blowing up in committee members’ faces. There was the time they hyped a witness appearance as incredibly damaging, only to have the transcript reveal that their own witness contradicted their claims in the hearing. They waved around record of a payment received by Joe Biden from his brother as evidence that Biden was profiting from his brother’s business dealings, only to have it revealed that the brother was repaying a loan — without interest.

But today, finally — finally! — a committee member submitted solid evidence of presidential corruption. Unfortunately for Comer and crew, the committee member is Rep. Jamie Raskin, and the president whose corrupt as fuck activities are documented in the report is Donald J. Trump. NYT gift link:

Donald J. Trump’s businesses received at least $7.8 million from 20 foreign governments during his presidency, according to new documents released by House Democrats on Thursday that show how much he received from overseas transactions while he was in the White House, most of it from China.

The transactions, detailed in a 156-page report called “White House For Sale” that was produced by Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, offer concrete evidence that the former president engaged in the kind of conduct that House Republicans have labored, so far unsuccessfully, to prove that President Biden did as they work to build an impeachment case against him…

House Democrats highlighted the transactions on Thursday as a counterweight to Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into Mr. Biden, which has sought to tie him to international business deals by his son Hunter Biden before his father became president in a bid to prove corruption or influence peddling. They have so far failed to show that President Biden was enriched in any way by any of those transactions.

”By elevating his personal financial interests and the policy priorities of corrupt foreign powers over the American public interest, former President Trump violated both the clear commands of the Constitution and the careful precedent set and observed by every previous commander in chief,” Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, wrote in a foreword to the report.

Cue the sad trombones!

Look, this isn’t in the least bit surprising. Trump was flagrantly corrupt before, during and after his single embarrassing term. The idea that the lunkhead sons were actually running the family con without Trump’s input was always absurd. Even gross hangers-on like in-laws on the Kushner side eagerly peddled influence, and Kushner enriched himself to the tune of billions-plural on the strength of his relationship with Trump and position as a White House nepotism hire.

So the Biden impeachment fishing expedition was always an elaborate “I know you are, but what am I?” taunt. But still, it’s gotta stick in Comer’s craw that a member of the committee he chairs so easily produced scads of evidence of Trump’s corruption (from incomplete records!) even as the GOP side fruitlessly beats the bushes for proof that Biden acted improperly.

Maybe it will inspire the hopping-mad GOP committee members to redouble their efforts to hold a speculative and meaningless impeachment exercise. That couldn’t possibly go wrong in an election year.

Open thread.

A little look at our new AKC-recognized breed.

Help us welcome the Lancashire Heeler to the Herding Group! pic.twitter.com/UllbNekxun

— American Kennel Club (@akcdoglovers) January 3, 2024

Maybe Cole could lie about ‘upgrade’ Thurston Howl’s backstory?..

It’s small in stature, big on activity and known for a “smile,” and it’s ready to compete with 200 other dog breeds.

Say hello to the Lancashire heeler, the latest breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. The organization announced Wednesday that the rare herding breed is now eligible for thousands of U.S. dog shows, including the prominent Westminster Kennel Club show.

With long bodies and short coats that are often black and tan, the solidly built dogs are shaped a bit like a downsized corgi, standing around 1 foot (30 centimeters) at the shoulder and weighing up to about 17 pounds (7.7 kilograms). Historically, they were farm helpers that could both drive cattle and rout rats, and today they participate in an array of canine sports and pursuits.

“They’re gritty little dogs, and they’re very intelligent little dogs,” says Patricia Blankenship of Flora, Mississippi, who has bred them for over a decade. “It’s an enjoyable little breed to be around.”

Their official description — or breed standard, in dog-world parlance — calls for them to be “courageous, happy, affectionate to owner,” and owners say contented heelers sometimes pull back their lips in a “smile.”

They’re “extremely versatile,” participating in everything from scent work to dock diving contests, says United States Lancashire Heeler Club President Sheryl Bradbury. But she advises that a Lancashire heeler “has to have a job,” whether it’s an organized dog sport or simply walks and fetch with its owners…

Lancashire heelers go back centuries in the United Kingdom, where they’re now deemed a “vulnerable native breed” at risk of dying out in their homeland. Britain’s Kennel Club has added an average of just 121 Lancashire heelers annually to its registry in recent years, and the American Kennel Club says only about 5,000 exist worldwide…

Good for the people who love the breed. But I Cynically predict a spate of ‘designer’ doxi-huahuas, minpin-huahuas and everyday ‘little black-and-tan mutts’ being passed off by pet-site grifters (and in a couple years, by rescue sites) as ‘rare purebred Lancashire Heelers’, as well.

And Another Thing

by John Cole|  January 3, 202410:06 pm| 65 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "Stories from the Road", John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

One of my favorite things about this blog is how I get to pop in and bracket posts written by health insurance or national security experts with my completely vapid bullshit and inane observations that anyone who had ever spent more than ten minutes outside a WV holler would already know. Fucking brilliant.

At any rate, another thing I have noticed is that sunset means something completely different here. In WV, where the sky is just shades of bruise for seven months a year and it’s just not bright that often in the winter, sunset means nothing. But here, a couple hours after sunset and I am ready for bed.

Also, Joelle is mad she has not been getting any good lines, and would like to let you all know that she told me a while ago that Tempe Cold and WV cold were two different things. I would also like to note that I have seen Joelle give me the finger on several occasions, a few of which I am not sure she intended for me to see it. Regardless, I have informed her that her little hobbit fingers are so tiny that she also needs to vocalize or I might miss it. This led me to tell a Cole family story that I don’t think has been mentioned before.

At any rate, many decades ago before becoming a parent, my mother was a genteel Quaker girl who didn’t drink, smoke, or swear. She still doesn’t drink or smoke. And for years she did not swear. She would say thinks like “shoot” or “sugar” or if more mad than usual she would break out a “fudge” and when at her absolute limit would throw out a rare “fudgesicle.” That is all I remember her ever saying until the mid eighties. When I was a teen and broke her.

I remember it plain as day. We were in the kitchen, and I had her just frothing mad in a way that only I can get someone (it’s a fucking talent, really), and she looked at me, held out her arm and extended here middle finger and aimed it right at my face and said:

“THERE!!! THAT IS WHAT I THINK OF YOU!!”

And. I. Got. HYSTERICAL. I laughed so hard I could not breathe it was so absurd and mom started in laughing, too. From that point on, mom eased into swearing and took to it like a natural.

Many years later, my brother had infuriated my mother and instead of flipping the bird, just looked at him and said “OJ!”

My brother looked at her and asked “What the hell does OJ mean?”

And mom, the English teacher and grammar nazi, stated confidently: “Obscene Gesture.”

Seth looked at her and said “Gesture is spelled with a G, though,” and the giggles followed.

And from that point on, whenever someone in the family irritates someone else in public, we just say “OJ” to each other and know what is going on.

War for Ukraine Day 679: 230 Ukrainian POWs and Stolen Civilians Are Returning Home!

Screen shot of new artwork by NEIVANMADE. The background is black. In the bottom foreground are grey Ukrainian homes and apartment buildings being bombarded by red Russian missiles with the Special Military Operation "Z" symbol on them. Above the missiles, written in red is the word "Ruzzians". Below the buildings being attacked is the statement "Turns Homes Into Graves".

It was a very long day today and I’m mostly fried. So I’m going to try to keep this brief(ish).

The Russians have opened up on Karkhiv again:

Kharkiv is under ballistic attack again. It’s the 6th day of unending terror. Amidst uncertainty, sleepless nights, and constant worry for loved ones, Russia’s terror aims to break us. Yet, we persist.

That’s from three hours ago. I just checked the air raid alert map and other than Russian occupied Luhansk Oblast and Russian occupied Crimea, there are no active air raid alerts as of 7:50 PM EST.

In better news, 230 Ukrainian POWs and civilians stolen by Russia are returning home!

Today, 230 Ukrainian defenders returned home from the captivity.
Among them 213 soldiers and sergeants, 11 officers, and 6 civilians.

This is the largest war prisoner exchange since the 24th of February, 2022.

We remember every single our person. We will return all of them 🇺🇦 pic.twitter.com/iJgTjXeNrN
