Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Wait, what?

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Let there be snark.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Republicans in disarray!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

HuffPo did an investigative report about the paid experts who travel around the country helping wingnut states defend anti-trans laws, such as bans on gender-affirming care, so-called “bathrooms bills” and trans participation in youth sports. Y’all will be shocked to learn the “experts” are greedy, unqualified, bible-humping assholes who don’t give a shit about the laws’ impact on real people’s lives! An excerpt:

Most…practice medicine in a field related to gender-affirming care — such as psychiatry or endocrinology — but have treated only a handful of adolescent patients for gender dysphoria, if that, and haven’t published relevant research. Several belong to openly anti-trans groups and have urged state legislatures to pass the very laws they get paid to defend.

Some of the most prominent witnesses were recruited by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative legal powerhouse whose mission is to realize a country governed by far-right Christian values. And many share ADF’s extreme antipathy toward LGBTQ+ people.

“They’re hired guns,” said Omar Gonzalez-Pagan, a lawyer for the LGBTQ+ rights group Lambda Legal who has faced Hruz and his cohorts in several cases. “These are not real experts. They’re manufactured as experts by the opponents of transgender rights.”

Still, for a rate of hundreds of dollars an hour, they can lend a sheen of scientific rigor to school bathroom restrictions and bans on gender-affirming care.

And they are increasingly having an impact. On Aug. 25, a Missouri judge temporarily upheld the state’s four-year ban on most gender-affirming treatments for minors, writing, “The science and medical evidence is conflicting and unclear.”

When a trans kid’s mom shared her fears about the heightened risk of suicide for adolescents who are denied gender-affirming care, one of the profiled “experts” told her to read Pope John Paul II’s opinions on the topic and said, “Some children are born into this world to suffer and die.”

That sick motherfucker’s name is Dr. Paul Hruz. According to HuffPo, he is a pediatric endocrinologist and has testified in 12 cases. Sarah Huckabee-Sanders’ state government in Arkansas has paid that man more than $41K.

Thinking about people like Hruz makes me stabby, so I’m gonna abruptly change the subject to dogs, okay?

The heroic police dog who nabbed the fugitive murderer in Pennsylvania earlier this week is a four-year-old Belgian Malinois named Yoda. Here is that good boy:

The Blue Bench Brigade

Hey all! Sorry to have been quiet lately. I was under a big deadline to launch my art site, and am prepping three different shows right now, with rehearsals right around the corner, so I’ve been swamped with work. I’ve also just been overwhelmed with the incredible acts of transphobia that seem to be the GOP’s lifeblood, so every time I start to write, another shitty transphobic event happens that tops the last one!

Shit is pretty bad, ya’ll… (emphasis mine)

Florida Legislature Sends Extreme Gender-Affirming Care Ban to Governor’s Desk

Even among the crowded field of extreme and damaging bans on best practice, age-appropriate health care, this bill stands out as particularly mean-spirited. SB 254 is an extreme, unprecedented attack on transgender people, their health care, and the families and health care providers who care for them.

SB 254 would give Florida the unprecedented ability to strip parental rights from parents who support their transgender children. This bill would penalize providers by inflicting criminal penalties (including felony penalties) on providers who give gender-affirming care; it would take licenses away from those providers; and it would prohibit Medicare from covering gender-affirming care for transgender youth or adults. It would also forbid public funds, including those of a public university, public hospital, city or county, and Medicare, from being used to provide benefits that include gender-affirming care – for transgender people of all ages. And – uniquely – it allows the state to use gender-affirming care or the “risk” of such care for a child as a reason to give Florida family courts exceptional jurisdiction to set aside another state’s custody determination.

This bill is really damn scary. It legalizes kidnapping trans children from supportive parents, discriminating against transgender adults by threatening providers, and also will allow the state to take away kids from their parents if one of their parents is transgender or supports transgender rights because that could put the child at “risk” of gender-affirming care.

Horrifying.

Elsewhere, we have shit like this:

A group of women watch Rep. Zooey Zephyr while occupying the public bench she worked from after being censured.

Zooey Zephyr, Montana’s lone transgender representative  was censured by the Republican-run Montana legislature. They forbid her from entering the House chamber, so she decided to work from this public bench outside of the chamber. This is her on April 27:

Zooey Zephyr

A few days later, those women snickering in the top photo took over the bench, forcing Zephyr to work standing up at the nearby lunch counter. They have been identified as family members of the same lawmakers who censured Zephyr.

These photos really say it all.

The women on that bench represent a culture of hate, a society that has stigmatized trans people over generations.

For them, barring Zooey Zephyr from the chamber and gallery was not enough.

They took the bench too. https://t.co/a2WyOGbYE6

A lot of people are noting the similarities…

same vibes pic.twitter.com/hWwzxqLnRw

— platibus (@the_platibus) May 1, 2023

But, in a sign that people are not all terrible assholes, a group of folks in Helena who are remote workers have been going to the Capitol in order to hold the bench for Zephyr. They call themselves the Blue Bench Brigade.

This. Is. Awesome. 💙#BlueBenchBrigade @ZoAndBehold https://t.co/1MtIJyNoyI

— Momma Bird 🐣🌻 (@picklepants715) May 2, 2023

“I don’t do well with bullying, and I decided instead of just kind of staying at home and fuming about this, that I was going to come in and at the very least, just tell Zooey that I support her and admire her bravery,” said Kurt Fehlig, one of three people holding down the bench around noon Tuesday.

“We’re keeping the bench for Zooey. So we can’t move,” said Tom Snell.

FUCK YES. THIS IS HOW YOU SHOW ALLYSHIP!!!

Zooey herself is being incredibly positive and resilient about the whole thing:

Some folks showed up early this morning and sat on the public benches near the entrance to the House, so Seat 31 has moved.

I’m up and ready to work. Plus, I hear stand desks are all the rage these days. pic.twitter.com/Nu8TEo50FJ

— Rep. Zooey Zephyr (@ZoAndBehold) May 1, 2023

On a personal note, this kind of behavior is pretty common in the lives of trans people, and it manifests in both small and big ways. I’ve also been quiet because I have been dealing with some bullies of my own in a space that is supposed to be a safe haven for me. I have been a member of a recovery group the last three years, which voted last spring to change from a Women’s meeting to a Women’s Plus meeting, so that the nonbinary people and trans women who were in the group felt included, and to indicate to newcomers who might be trans that the group was a safe place to get sober.

This effort has been under attack now for the last few months as some of the older women in the group have been talking about needing a safe space for “women” (read: cis-women) and spreading disinformation that could have been pulled straight from JK Rowling’s twitter feed. This weekend there will be a big meeting to decide whether or not this group that I have called home is going to choose to exclude me and other trans folks or not.

What I plan to say is that the purpose of that group is to help as many people as it can. Having a more inclusive name to the group harms no one, it just asks that everyone make space for one another. It can be a little uncomfortable, but we will all benefit from it in the long run. To intentionally close the group to trans folks is to make us into a political issue, rather than recognizing that we are people who are just trying to be in community with others we relate to.

I also have a lot of thoughts of how it has become culturally acceptable on reneging on trans people when it becomes uncomfortable. The biggest example lately was the harm Budweiser did to the trans community by cratering to right-wing hatred, pulling their partnership with Dylan Mulvaney, and quiet-firing the employees responsible for it. When a large institution shows that bowing to transphobia is acceptable given a certain threshold of discomfort or pressure, they give other institutions and individuals permission to do the same, which ripples out across culture. Trans people are human beings, not a political issue, and we should reject efforts to make us one.

Back to the grindstone! Happy Friday

Zooey Zephyr: Silenced for Speaking the Truth.

by planet eddie|  April 23, 20235:36 pm| 63 Comments

This post is in: LGBTQ Rights, The State of Being Trans in America, Assholes, Bad Ass Women, Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell, Disinformation is a motherfucker, Fucked-up-edness, Get Angry

Zooey Zephyr, the first openly transgender person to be elected to the state legislature in Montana, is being silenced in by the Montana Republican Party for speaking the truth, which is that gender-affirming medical care is a matter of life or death for trans youth. She’s a total badass.

From the AP:

On Tuesday as the House was debating Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte’s proposed amendments to a measure banning gender-affirming care for minors, Zephyr spoke up in reference to the body’s opening prayer.

“I hope the next time there’s an invocation, when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands,” she said.

House Majority Leader Sue Vinton, a Republican, immediately called Zephyr’s comments inappropriate and disrespectful. That evening, a group of conservative lawmakers known as the Montana Freedom Caucus demanded her censure and deliberately referred to Zephyr using male pronouns in their letter and a Tweet. That’s known as misgendering — using pronouns that don’t match a person’s gender identity.

Zephyr had upset legislative leaders with emotional testimony previously this session.

She made a similar “blood on your hands” comment the first time the House heard the bill and has also given emotional testimony indicating bills that attack LGBTQ+ rights will lead to suicide.

“When there are bills targeting the LGBTQ community, I stand up to defend my community,” Zephyr told The Associated Press after she was silenced Thursday. “And I choose my words with clarity and precision, and I spoke to the real harms that these bills bring.”

Medical experts agree that gender affirming care saves lives. This has been backed up by the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Medical Association.

Notice how her colleagues call for civility while misgendering Zooey:

On the one hand, the GOP doesn’t give a damn if trans kids kill themselves. On the other hand, someone hurt their feelings by saying that out loud. Both sides, right?

It is exhausting how the GOP continues to simply lie about the extensive research that has been done in regards to trans healthcare, and act like their actions are moral or rational. This takedown by Jon Stewart of Leslie Rutledge, the Arkansas Attorney General, remains one of the best I’ve seen if you haven’t had a chance to watch it.

Jon interviewed Leslie Rutledge, Arkansas Attorney General, about why her state banned gender-affirming care for minors – ignoring the guidelines of major medical organizations and taking the decision out of parents’ hands. Watch the full interview on @AppleTVPlus pic.twitter.com/4SoH3orWa6

This post is in: The State of Being Trans in America, The War On Women, Women's Rights, Women's Rights Are Human Rights

I’ve been quiet because I have wanted to write up a post to address how trans rights and women’s rights are the same thing, but I was really upset by what happened last week. This included a lot of misgendering, personal attacks, misrepresentation, and even mockery about me being assaulted. I told Cole that if Balloon-Juice allows that to continue, I would no longer post here. So everyone, cool your jets.

ALL trans people need women’s rights. Period. because trans women are women, and AFAB (assigned female at birth) nonbinary folks, and trans men need access to women’s medical care: pap smears, birth control, abortion, mammograms, sexual abuse counseling, safe non-sexist workplaces, schools, and public places. My uterus doesn’t care that I’m nonbinary, and as a nonbinary person, I have to deal with all the misogyny that regular women deal with as well as an extra dose of transphobia.

When trans people get their rights, cis women also get their rights because it is a matter of respect for bodily autonomy.

When cis women get their rights, trans people do not necessarily get their rights. And many cis women view trans people as a threat to women’s rights.

It’s the perfect wedge issue. And some of the worst vitriol is coming from women who use slogans like “protect girls” to strip trans people of their rights. Cis women have had to endure so much sexism, and should be our natural allies, but when someone feels like they don’t have political power, it’s much easier for fear and violence to flow across or downward. This is a tale as old as time.

Trans people experience sexism from cis men and cis women. Period. If Anne Laurie or Water Girl posted about how a man they know publicly goes around talking about how liberal he is, but then trashes women and behaves in a sexist manner behind closed doors, it would be egregious to attack them with “not all men.” The trans people who post and comment on this site have experienced tremendous discrimination, and are experiencing tremendous discrimination. Trans adults are being forcibly detransitioned in Missouri, the Don’t Say Gay Laws have been expanded to 12th grade in Florida, and today, TODAY, House Republicans passed a bill to ban trans athletes from women’s sports.

As for why I do not use the word TERF. Well, it’s because I’m trans. and when the word TERF comes out of my mouth, people stop listening. I intend to get into this further in a future post, but many people see TERF as a slur, and both transphobia and transmisogyny are far more subtle and nuanced than you think they are, so no, I don’t call all women who say transphobic things (intentionally or not) TERFs because it ends the discussion. And I need cis women who feel uncomfortable about trans people to stay in the discussion.

Furthermore, there are numerous forms of feminism. Reactionary feminism is a specific brand of anti-progress ideology that wants to bring back gender roles and only recognizes “biological women” as women. A two-second google search will show you some troubling manifestos, including an article by Naomi Wolf who considers herself, Michelle Bachman, and Sarah Palin reactionary feminists — is that who you want to align yourself with?

It is okay to not know everything, and it’s okay to ask questions. But words have meaning, and if your words have been co-opted to mean something discriminatory, then fight to get those words back! But fight the people who took the words from you, don’t fight the people who are being discriminated against by those words!

Trans rights are Women’s Rights. Women’s Rights are Human Rights. Trans Rights are Human Rights.

I don’t have a garden, so here is some art I made while I was angry this week.

Good morning!

There are a devastating number of trans folks and women of color in the comments of my last thread who are saying that Balloon-Juice is not a safe place. I wish I could hug you all.

EDIT: I’m going to state that I am a feminist who is white, and I appreciate all the feminists — women, nonbinary folks, men — who understand that we need to be able to critique those who label themselves as such but do not practice those principles in how they treat and speak about people. If you are feeling uncomfortable, then that is a moment to look inward, and engage in a mature discussion about it.

Here’s a lovely book report by @alokvmenon. If you like it, I highly encourage you to also check out their book report on the history of feminism and the sex binary, and how suffragists were called “Third Sex.”

I am not going to be in solidarity with a person who calls me an “it.” Period. No matter how many times she votes democrat.

Some light midnight reading for folks who are acting like all of this is brand new from “Women-Identified Women” by Emma Heaney.

I’m going to bed.

Hey folks, the last 2 weeks have been a mess as I’ve been having some crazy unexpected health issues. I wound up in the ER Monday, and have just been recovering the last few days. I really hate hospitals (who doesn’t!), but they grate on me even more because I always get serially misgendered, which can be exhausting.

So imagine my surprise that the nurse who helped me get into a wheelchair immediately clocked from listening to my roomate that I use they/them pronouns, without anything needing to be said, and just shifted to using them.

Then the doctor, who was a really sweet woman, also asked me what name and pronouns I wanted to use, and also turned to my partner to ask him. Really just easy and such a cool thing to do.

Also had a very funny moment with a male orderly who thought he was in the wrong room when he came looking for “Eddie,” and then I think overcorrected when he realized I was trans and immediately started calling me “sir.” It was very cute, especially since he had to gurney me around for like 10 minutes, and every time we hit any bump or closed door, he was like “Sorry about that, sir.” Everyone should get to be “sir” sometimes, whatever “sir” is for them.

I like to share these little stories because it was all so easy when usually navigating healthcare stuff as a trans person is so tough. I didn’t care that a few of the orderlies misgendered me because I don’t really expect otherwise, but I felt so much better taken care of that folks were actually looking out for someone like me. Learning how to pay just a little extra attention isn’t the hell republicans or neoliberals think it’s going to be, and their fear that someone is going to lose it at them if they mess up a pronoun (unless they’re doing it willfully) is just silly. Part of navigating the world as a trans person is expecting that people will need some grace and patience. If you do your best, that’s usually pretty clear to folks, and it’s just so easy to correct yourself, and move along.

On the other hand, I was also called a “he/she/it” this week by my partner’s ex, who likes to beat her chest publicly about how she’s such a good liberal feminist, but shits all over trans people privately whenever she gets the chance. I have a theory that there is a certain kind of (usually white) woman who is so obsessed with her victimhood at the hands of men, that the idea that a person might have a more challenging gender experience (see: trans folks and BIPOC women), threatens her. I think a lot of the reactionary “women’s rights” activists emerge from the angry disbelief that someone might have it worse than them.

Also, I’m really into this content creator lately, and definitely encourage you to watch some of their videos.
