Balloon Juice Angel for Our Other Flippable Seat in Virginia

by WaterGirl|  September 7, 20251:48 pm| 29 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Update at 7:00 pm on Sunday:

The match has been met, thanks to all who donated, and special thanks to our anonymous BJ Angel!

This gets us to just over halfway to our goal for Virgil Thornton

We have an anonymous Angel who will match donations up to $50 per person, for a total of $500, for Wilbur VIRGIL Thornton, the other key seat we are supporting in Virginia in November.

In order to be matched, please tell us about your donation in the comments or by email to me.

You all know what the stakes are, so I won’t share them here, but I would love it if some of our Virginia peeps could pop in and remind us of why these races are so important.  I think one person did that in the last thread, but I would love to hear from more of you.

With everything that’s going on, in order to weather the storm, we need as many states with Democratic leadership as we possibly can.

Let’s FLIP this seat!

Donate

Remember, people who come out to vote for state level offices usually vote the whole ticket!

With This Threat to Illinois, We Are At a Crossroads

You may be sick of hearing about this, thinking about this, and talking about this.

But it sure feels to me like he is taking it to 11.  No, make that 15 on a scale of 10.  Not getting the response he hopes for, the selfish, ruthless child  gets more and more extreme.

Donald Trump’s plan is one that’s been repeated over and over again by dictators across history — inciting the local population before sending disrupters.

That’s how you convert a democracy into something else.

Illinois won’t fall for this ploy.

— Governor JB Pritzker (@govpritzker.illinois.gov) September 7, 2025 at 12:02 PM

It’s always easier to do something than it is to not do something.   At least it seems so to me.  It’s easier to add exercise, or increase exercise, than it is to eat less or not eat some food you particularly like.

What Governor Pritzker is asking the people of Chicago to is NOT to allow themselves to be provoked.

I see him promoting that over and over again, but I think it will take a whole lot of restraint because the orange guy will raise the stakes and raise the stakes.  Hell, I think he would order the guard to shoot protesters if he thought that would get him a riot that would allow him to add a cloak of legitimacy to what he really wants to do, which is create a police state.

I feel kind of sick about that this morning.  Talk me down, guys.  Please.

Pope Leo XIV has inaugurated a new sustainable farming project run by the Vatican.

JDivan Vance will no doubt be furious:

Pope Leo XIV fed fish, pet horses and visited organic vineyards Friday as he inaugurated the Vatican’s ambitious project to turn Pope Francis’ preaching about caring for the environment into practice.

Leo formally opened Borgo Laudato Si, a 55-acre utopian experiment in sustainable farming, vocational training and environmental education located on the grounds of the papal summer retreat in Castel Gandolfo. The Vatican hopes the center, open to student groups, CEOs and others, will be a model of ecological stewardship, education and spirituality for the Catholic Church and beyond…

Leo has strongly reaffirmed Francis’ focus on the need to care for God’s creation, and celebrated the first “green” Mass in the estate’s gardens earlier this summer, using a new set of prayers inspired by the encyclical that specifically invoke prayers for creation. On Friday, some 10 years after Laudato Si was published, Leo presided over a liturgy to bless the new center after touring its gardens, fishpond, farm and classrooms.

Leo recalled that according to the Bible, human beings have a special place in the act of creation, created in the “image and likeness of God.”

“But this privilege comes with a great responsibility: that of caring for all other creatures, in accordance with the creator’s plan,” he said. “Care for creation, therefore, represents a true vocation for every human being, a commitment to be carried out within creation itself, without ever forgetting that we are creatures among creatures, and not creators.”…

War for Ukraine Day 1,290: Drone Swarms in the Small Hours

by Adam L Silverman|  September 6, 20258:04 pm| 33 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

A painting by the Ukrainain artist NEIVANMADE. The upper 1/2 is grey and there are black Shahed drones on it aimed towards the bottom of the painting. The bottom half of the painting has a blood red background and in the center of the bottom is a house, to it's left is a swing set, and to its right is a car. They are charcoal grey on the blood red background background. The drones are targeting the house, swing set, and car. Above the house and below the drones are the words "Russia Kills To Erase Free People".

It has been a very long, exhausting week, so I’m just going to run through the basics so I can watch the All Blacks versus the Springboks and rack out.

Drone swarms are moving east to west across Ukraine and air raid alerts are up for all but the most western oblasts as of 2:25 AM local time in Ukraine/7:25 PM EDT.

Another barrage of russian drones is coming to kill and destroy. Kyiv prepares for a night in the shelters. With my sleeping bag packed and a cup of tea, I wait and scroll through the news.

This is so wild. Don’t allow russia to normalize its daily terror over Ukrainians.

Russian drone attack on Ukraine continues. There were explosions in Kharkiv a little earlier, and more drones are flying around.

The cost:

Since the start of September, Russia has launched over 1,300 attack drones, nearly 900 guided bombs, and around 50 missiles on Ukraine, President Zelenskyy said. Last night’s strikes again targeted civilian infrastructure. Explosions were reported across almost every region.

Among the Top Priorities in All Our Work With Partners Is Stronger Air Defense, Protection Against Russian “Shaheds,” Against Russian Missiles – Address by the President

6 September 2025 – 21:17

I wish you good health, fellow Ukrainians,

Our active diplomatic week continues – we are working at all levels. Also today, an important Parliamentary Summit of the G7 concluded, and Ukraine was represented. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, met with the Speakers of the parliaments of Canada, the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, as well as with the President of the European Parliament. Everyone supports us, Ukraine, our defense, and our pursuit of a reliable and lasting peace. I want to thank them for that.

Overall, in my opinion, this week has been very productive. Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan – that is the geography of support and activities just for this single week. The Coalition of the Willing – 35 countries. 26 countries are involved in security guarantees for Ukraine, and these are substantive commitments on land, in the air, at sea, and in cyberspace, as well as financial support for our army. The most important thing is a sufficiently strong Ukrainian army, so that Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty are fully guaranteed. And that means weapons for our army, long-term funding for the Ukrainian army. Many of these components have already been agreed upon with partners as a baseline.

We are also creating new joint weapons production. For the first time in history, Ukraine has begun building a joint plant with Denmark, on Danish territory, and it will produce components for our missiles and drones, weapons that are already proving highly effective. During this war, Ukraine has already reached the level where nearly 60% of the weapons we have,  weapons in the hands of our warriors, are Ukrainian-made, and they are strong weapons, many of them cutting-edge.

Of course, there are goals we must still achieve, in particular, the production in Ukraine and together with Ukraine of air defense systems, of different types. It’s a challenge. And we must get there as well. Ukraine has already proven that, in weapons production, we are among the best in the world. For that, we thank everyone who is developing Ukraine’s defense sector, designing new models of Ukrainian weapons, and I want to thank all our people driving the technological advancement of our country.

Next week is also expected to be quite active. And among other things, we are preparing for the Ramstein format. We are also working to secure new contributions from partners to the PURL program. This is a program we truly need: thanks to it, we purchase American weapons, and it already involves over two billion dollars. We will continue increasing this funding.

And among the top priorities in all our work with partners is stronger air defense, protection against Russian “shaheds,” against Russian missiles. Right now, Russian attack drones are again in our skies – our air defense is responding. There were strikes today in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and our other cities and communities. Every day this Russian threat persists, and that means every day we must make Ukraine stronger. That is exactly what we are doing. I thank everyone who is helping! We thank everyone who is defending our state!

Glory to Ukraine!

Most likely, it’s too late for OSCE to set up a mission anyway. Kobakhidze invited them now in an effort to portray themselves as democratic.

Worst part? He did so only after Lelo reiterated their participation in the locals after the pardon of the leaders.

Kobakhidze said that 1/

now that the elections were indeed “competitive,” thanks to the participation of Lelo and Gakharia, no one should doubt the conduct of the elections and that it was time to invite OSCE.

Lelo “welcomed” the decision.

Read that again. 2/2.

The US:

The effort to “decouple” Russia from China has failed. Putin’s rhetoric in Beijing after the Alaska meeting (which produced little of value) only conferred greater legitimacy on Putin. With the 50-day deadline to stop the war expired, the administration’s weakness is glaring

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) September 5, 2025 at 8:27 PM

2/ China, on the other hand, is steadily advancing an alternative order through vehicles such as the SCO and BRICS. This has been made possible by US policies that penalize allies and partners while rewarding regimes that refuse to cooperate. Not to mention annexation threats

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) September 5, 2025 at 8:27 PM

3/ By abandoning treaties, retreating from institutions, failing to deliver and stepping back from its traditional leadership role, Washington has weakened the existing international system, leaving Beijing and its partner states as a credible alternative.

From Militarnyi:

The Ukrainian Navy and the National Guard conducted an operation to rescue four Ukrainian soldiers who had been hidden in the occupied territories for three years.

This was announced by the Commander of the Navy Oleksiy Neizhpapa.

After being released from captivity, the Marine Corps soldier said that in 2022, during the battles in eastern Ukraine, his twin brother was seriously injured and ended up in a hospital, where caring medics hid him from the Russian occupation forces.

To rescue him, the Navy commander initiated a special evacuation operation, during which it turned out that three other TDF soldiers were in the hospital with his twin brother, who had been forced to hide there for more than three years.

Given the circumstances, the Navy’s special intelligence unit “Angels” and the National Guard’s special forces were involved in the operation.

“The operation was planned and divided into several stages, taking into account the illegal status of all persons, high activity of hostilities, which was complicated by intensified filtration measures by the Russian special services. The primary goal was to prevent a threat to the lives and health of the military,” says Oleksiy Neizhpapa.

Together with a marine and three guardsmen, the rescue team took out of the occupied territory a hospital medical worker who helped to hide the defenders.

The Navy Commander expressed his gratitude to the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Border Guard Service, Andriy Sybiha and Serhiy Deynek, for facilitating the operation.

He also noted that the Angels Special Reconnaissance Unit had already rescued 88 people.

If this were a movie, I would walk out because it would be so unbelievable as to be ridiculous.

My best friend, who is a politically aware normie, described this to me while we were having a little siesta on the screened-in porch this afternoon after harvesting more spicy peppers.  I could barely believe what she was telling me – holy fucking fuck.

Absolutely horrifying that a president would be threatening war on a sovereign state.

No, not the sovereign state of Ukraine.  Illinois!

Me thinks this will not help the Administration’s case when a lawsuit is filed.

The President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city.

This is not a joke. This is not normal.

Donald Trump isn’t a strongman, he’s a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.

I am damn glad that Pritzker is at the wheel.

Know your rights, Illinois.

Stay safe and stay informed.

Speaking of governors, and of holy fucking fuck…

In case you’re just skimming and not reading, may I call your attention to Predator Patio.
