One more batch of winter pics from my patch of flyover country this week. We are forecast to get 7-10 inches of snow today, so it seemed like a good project. Spring is on the way, but not yet within waving distance, I fear.

On my Facebook page I have been posting a picture every evening with the caption “Bird Butt Before Bedtime”, aka BBBB. Birds don’t like situations where people are pointing long black objects at them, so they often skedaddle while I am trying to photograph them. Thus I have a large collection of bird butt pics, and this is one of them. A Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) giving me the side-eye and taking off at the same time.

Many opportunities for seeing winter birds in Flyover Country or elsewhere are available if you have a bird feeder, and even more are available if you have water for them to drink or bathe in. Cedar Waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) have been scarce so far here this winter (an untimely freeze last spring hit the cedar fruits just as they were starting to develop). But a small flock paid a visit one afternoon, and I got a photo through the kitchen window.

In my wanderings about western Washington and other nearby areas I am always taking photos of the things I find. One of my favorites types of photos to create are what I call texturals, for lack of a better term. They are often macros, but not always. They highlight color, texture and/or pattern over scenery or narrative. I find them fascinating and beautiful. I hope you will to. I’ll end this series with a theme dear to my heart. I love the forest and the textures and patterns created trees in always fascinating to me and catching my eye.

Sunlight and shadow on old cedar. The ancient forests were almost all logged in the past 2 centuries. Remnants of it are everywhere.

Winter in Flyover Country can be tough birding in some years, or maybe it just seems tougher as I get older. Nevertheless there are always things to see, and birds to photograph and celebrate. So this is the next installment in an irregular series of On The Road posts, showcasing some of the sights that keep me sane here in year 2 of the pandemic, and year eleventy billion of the reign of 45. I write this at the end of the week of the attempted coup, and dog knows what it will be like when you read this in a few weeks. Stay well, and go see some birds if you can!

Ice can be treacherous and deadly, but when the sun comes out after an ice storm it can also be jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Barbed wire, ice, and refracted sky on a crisp clear day on the edge of the Great Plains.

Once again, I have a photo of a building I can’t identify.  It was taken 45 years ago at a time that I relied on Anne-Marie to know the wheres and whats relating to my pictures.  I’m pretty sure I took this on my way to lunch with a friend who worked in the financial district, but I have no idea what that building is.
