Our few days in the Nebraska Sandhills in October were full of scenic vistas and birds. Here are a few more images from our mid-October trip to the Hutton Niobrara Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary in north-central Nebraska.
Waterfowl had mostly cleared out of the area, with just a few ducks remaining, and more to come when colder weather hit the prairie potholes to the north of us. But there were a few stragglers, like this young Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) in a small pond near Newport.

Many years ago I took a bit of a personal sabbatical and traveled around the world. One of my stops, and probably my favorite, was New Zealand. I spent a month there, driving around with a rented car, enjoying a place that truly does feel like a natural movie set. It was actually so beautiful that in some ways, I found taking pictures difficult – there was such an abundance of scenes that I couldn’t focus on specific compositions, and found myself just looking around with a smile on my face. Nearly every spot in the world has some form of natural or human-made beauty, but I can’t think of any other place where the beauty is quite so endless.
I arrived in New Zealand after 2 months in southeast Asia, mostly in cities. I was prepared for culture shock, but I wasn’t prepared for the utter peace that hiking in these open valleys would bring. At one point I simply sat on the ground and looked around, content to enjoy the serenity and allow myself, however briefly, to set my cares aside.

Denali, Part 2.
When I left off, I had just agreed to a flight around Denali, despite a lifelong conviction that only the insane ride around in planes the size of a mid-size sedan. But it was a perfect hour, and I was so conscious of my good luck every second of it that I forgot to be afraid. It was one of those rare experiences that was absolutely, totally, 100%, unequivocally worth it.

We continue at the Osaka Aquarium. The first five of these photos are from the big main tank, the rest from various exhibits towards the end of the trail.

I meant to submit these pictures for National Parks After Dark, but got too busy. I think they’re worth it any time — Denali National Park is one of the most magnificent places on this planet. I count myself very lucky that not only did I get to spend several nights there, but I also got to see the namesake mountain, which is often hidden by clouds.
