Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

We still have time to mess this up!

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

American Voters Open Thread

Snark from a Soviet immigrant:

1992. GOP: a moderate wing and a batshit conservative wing. Dems: a sane conservative wing and no other wing.
America: "Well, I guess, I could give the Dems a try. Risky, but OK."

— Slava Malamud (@SlavaMalamud) February 20, 2020

2008. GOP: a batshit conservative wing and a Taliban wing. Dems: a moderate wing and a sane conservative wing.
America: "Oh, hell, let's part-ay! I am gonna elect this raging black moderate and take a walk on a wild side!"

— Slava Malamud (@SlavaMalamud) February 20, 2020

2016. GOP: a Taliban wing and a Hitler wing. Dems: a moderate wing and a progressive wing.
America: "I mean… her emails!"

— Slava Malamud (@SlavaMalamud) February 20, 2020

2020. GOP: a Hitler wing and no other wing. Dems: a center-left wing and a social democratic wing.
America: "Are the Dems electable? Can they attract the moderate me? Why can't they come back from the corner they've painted themselves into? I am afraid they are too out there…"

— Slava Malamud (@SlavaMalamud) February 20, 2020

If you wanna replace “America” with “Our failed American media”, well…

It’s the End of the World

This post is in: Election 2020

Not really, though. I don’t like a lot of what I am seeing out there, with people predicting the end of the world if Sanders wins. First off, the primaries are FAR from over, and anything can happen. And I am not saying that in a “miracles happen Bernie can be defeated” way, but in a “we don’t know shit yet because this is soo early in the game.”

Second, this is what being in a coalition means. My preferred candidate is Warren, but should she lose and not become the nominee, I am still going to support the Democratic nominee, because Trump is a monster and Ruth Bader Ginsburg ain’t getting any younger.

So calm down. I think a lot of people are working themselves into a lather and painting themselves rhetorically into a corner. Anyone we nominate will be better than Trump. Literally anyone. The bar is that low. Mike Bloomberg is a billionaire autocrat and a fascist who oversaw some pretty fucking outright racist policies as Mayor, but EVEN HE is better than Trump, and by a wide fucking margin.

So buck up. Just keep supporting the person you like, work on getting out the vote, and do what you can to take our country back.

Open Thread: Voter Information At Your Fingertips

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics, Right to Vote, Voter Suppression

I had asked in the comments a few days ago if anyone had a site where you could check your voter registration without entering your email. I wanted to post on FB and I knew I had some folks who would be reluctant to give their email, knowing they’d be inundated with donation and other requests.

Turns out the League of Women Voters have just such a site.

https://twitter.com/bodner_h/status/1228034468008595456?s=20

From Vote411.org  you can register to vote, check your voter registration and see what’s on your ballot, with signing up for unwanted emails.

Share far and wide!

Here’s a big puppy trying and succeeding to fit into the smallest place possible (my spot, btw).

Sleep great dane

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Blessed Respite

Sea Oats

Thank you, commentor Cope:

Here is a group of close up pictures of pretty flowers/plants from our back yard, Sanibel island and the Chalice Well near Glastonbury. Again, my personal knowledge of the floral world is scant indeed so any misidentifications are mine and mine alone.

At the top, sea oats against the setting sun on Sanibel Island. Yes, not really a flower but one of the few plants I actually can identify.

Sago Palm
Second, a flowering Sago palm in our yard. It’s not technically a palm and this one died some years ago after infestation by some kind of white gunk. If I had left it in the ground, it might have pulled through but I didn’t.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Blessed Respite
Thirdly, the flower of a bottlebrush plant. It too thrived for many years in our yard but it isn’t there any more and, honest officer, I don’t know where it went.

Bromelid
Staying in our own backyard, this is the sexy part of some kind of bromeliad that took over our side yard for some years until they were deemed a nuisance and relocated to the yard of appreciative neighbor.

English Pink Flower
Last and most exotic is a pink flower from the Chalice Well at the foot of Glastonbury Tor in far off England. Mrs. cope was there some years ago and brought back hundreds and hundreds of pictures. This is one of the prettiest but I have no idea what it is.

***********
I think that last photo is a poppy?

Still no snow cover around here, but I’ve been so busy on this political stuff all week, I haven’t made any progress on the disgusting dumpsite that is our front yard. I don’t want to start clearing the beds, for fear of inducing six weeks of subzero temps, but if I were a more prudent person I could get a head start cleaning up the hardscape, at least…

What’s going on in your garden (planning) this week?

COVID-19 Coronavirus Update – Saturday / Sunday

by Anne Laurie|  February 23, 20202:16 am| 57 Comments

Typo in my tweet below. #Covid19 death toll in China is 2442. https://t.co/Yfg21mpAcB

— Helen Branswell (@HelenBranswell) February 23, 2020

2. Of the international #COVID19 cases, 45% are people who were infected on cruise ships. For a while, the cruise ship infections made up more than half of all out-of-China cases. With most (?) people off ships & spread picking up in Italy, Iran, South Korea, this is shifting. pic.twitter.com/XROnOzIsxh

— Helen Branswell (@HelenBranswell) February 22, 2020

New stage in public perception, if not in the actual spread of the virus — “science journalist. molecular biologist. curious. Contributing Correspondent at @sciencemagazine”:

For me and for everyone I know who has been following #covid19, the last few days have felt like a profound shift in the epidemic. We are clearly entering a new phase. And since I've had some time to digest recent news, here is a short thread about that „window of opportunity“

— Kai Kupferschmidt (@kakape) February 22, 2020

The @WHO and @drtedros have emphasized again and again that there is a “window of opportunity” to contain #COVID19. On Friday, Tedros said he believed that window of opportunity was still there, but narrowing. Personally, I think the last days have shown that time is up.

— Kai Kupferschmidt (@kakape) February 22, 2020

…

From the summary: "we estimated that about two thirds of COVID-19 cases exported from mainland China have remained undetected worldwide, potentially resulting in multiple chains of as yet undetected human-to-human transmission outside mainland China"

— Kai Kupferschmidt (@kakape) February 22, 2020

The massive efforts in China have bought us time. But we should be using that time to prepare and that includes preparing the world by communicating what is happening, what is likely to happen and what the response might look like. That is the “window of opportunity” we have now.

— Kai Kupferschmidt (@kakape) February 22, 2020

Scoop: Trump will ask Congress for emergency funds to fight coronavirus, although health officials fear the request – potentially $1B – will be too small and quickly exhausted. https://t.co/XhHCn7gA6K

The Miracle On Ice Part II: Emergency Backup Goalie and Zamboni Driver Dave Ayres For the Win!

by Adam L Silverman|  February 22, 202010:58 pm| 42 Comments

This post is in: Because of wow., Not Politics, Open Threads, Something Good Open Thread, Sports

On 22 February 1980, the US Olympic hockey team beat the Soviet Olympic hockey team in what has been called the miracle on ice. Tonight in Toronto a second miracle on ice occurred. The Carolina Hurricanes starting goalie left the game with an injury. During the second period, the Hurricanes back up goalie also left the game with an injury. The NHL has a system in place for this called the emergency backup goalie (EBUG) – it is not played by Robert Picardo. At every arena, during every NHL game, a local goalie is kept in the arena in case one team’s starting and backup goalies are both forced to leave the game. Usually the emergency backup goalie is a local recreational league player or coach who has played the position for a while and they are prepared to suit up for either team. They usually spend the night in one of the luxury boxes, get to watch the game for free, get free food and drink, and then go home at the end of the night. Every so often one of them has to actually dress and go on the ice. Tonight that emergency backup goalie in Toronto was Dave Ayres who is 42 years old and is the Zamboni driver for the Toronto Maple Leafs. And he had to dress and go on the ice.

This is his story!

The Hurricanes lost James Reimer with a lower-body injury in the first period, Petr Mrazek with an upper-body injury in the second period, Brett Pesce with a lower-body injury in the second period, and now have a 42-year-old zamboni driver in net on Hockey Night in Canada.

— Brett Finger (@brettfinger) February 23, 2020

Jaccob Slavin gets hit into James Reimer. Reimer is ruled out for the rest of the game with a lower-body injury. Needless to say, this is a potentially huge deal for the Hurricanes.

Petr Mrazek collides with Kyle Clifford. Mrazek charged way out of the net to play the puck. Clifford gets handed a five-minute major and a game misconduct. James Reimer got hurt in the first period and was ruled out for the game… pic.twitter.com/bFtGU0lTox

— ксения, MPH (@sad_ex_machina) February 23, 2020

Also, a kidney donor!

Ayres stands-in as goalie for the @TorontoMarlies (whose helmet he's wearing) and Leafs. 42 and a donor kidney recipient, so this is something of a Cinderella story!

— Ross Whiteford (@redheadednomad) February 23, 2020

What a way to make a debut, Dave Ayres pic.twitter.com/1opzaBgR4t

— Carolina Hurricanes (@Canes) February 23, 2020

"I said to the boys – even after they scored that second goal – I said, let me get these jitters out of the way. In the third period I'll be ready to go."

My god, this David Ayres is just wonderful. And for the record, he stopped all 7 shots he saw in the third period.

— Brett Finger (@brettfinger) February 23, 2020

In the hallway before the beginning of the third period:

"For us

For Wally

For Ginner

For Davey"

— Michael Smith (@MichaelSmithNC) February 23, 2020

Other teams in the league tweeted out their support!

We're here for this.

— Arizona Coyotes (@ArizonaCoyotes) February 23, 2020

GO DAVE!!

— Tampa Bay Lightning (@TBLightning) February 23, 2020

DAVE!!! ❤️🖤

— LA Kings (@LAKings) February 23, 2020

And the Canes, with a playoff run on the line, were ecstatic about Dave’s performance!

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?!

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper weighed in.

How about we send him the N.C. flag that flew over the governor’s mansion today as a thank you gift. Kinda like you can do with the USA flags at the Capital building in DC. I think that would be awesome.
