Saturday Open Thread – Family Stories

by WaterGirl|  October 5, 202410:40 am| 143 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Family stories.  The classics  Everybody’s got them, right?  The thing that was said that lives on, in infamy.  Or possibly glory!

Commenter  wjca told this one in the wee hours of the night last night, in a discussion about swearing.

Almost 3 years old younger brother, over some minor oops: “Damn it!”  Almost 5 years old me, with the authority of my superior years: “No, David, it’s  ‘God damn it!’.”

Mother, in the next room, suddenly realizing, with a bit of a shock,  that her language around us might need a bit of restraining,

Which made me think of the classic story of my niece, at the shoe store when she was 4 or 5 years old.

While trying on shoes, she managed to use nearly every form of the word fuck, properly conjugated.  Fuck.  Fucking.  Fuck it.

I think the original “fuck” was when she had trouble getting a shoe on.  “Fucking” was in reference to a problem with the zipper on her jacket.  I do not recall the context for “fuck it”.

I’m sure my sister was mortified, but I thought it was hysterically funny.

Similar to wjca’s story, it led to a conversation with my sister’s husband and what could and could not be said around the kitchen table when his friends were over after the kids were “asleep”.

Any family stores that you guys would like to share?

War for Ukraine Day 954: Sure Jan

by Adam L Silverman|  October 4, 20248:40 pm| 19 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is doing very well at the end of the week after her most recent treatment. Thank you for all the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donation.

Second, it has been a long, draining week. Something from the hurricane seems to have broken most FloriDuhans’ brains and everyone is driving like its Death Race 2024 out there. I’m going to just run through the basics so I can go rack out.

The DOD Deputy Press Secretary held a briefing yesterday. Her remarks have not gone over well in Ukraine. Also, in my living room.

Q:  Thank you. So today, President Zelenskyy urged NATO allies to help intercept Iranian missiles and drones over Ukraine, as they do with Israel. Can the United States and allies help Ukraine with that? I mean since it’s possible Israel, why cannot it be done with Ukraine?

MS. SINGH:  So thank you for the question. While I appreciate the question, we are talking about two very different landscapes and battlefields. The president, at the very beginning of when Russia invaded Ukraine, has directed this department to provide Ukraine what it needs on the battlefield.

They have been very successful in employing, whether it be air defenses or other capabilities, to continue to take back their territory. The secretary just had a call with Mr. Umerov, getting that battlefield update, getting to better understand what other capabilities they might need, if any. The president has made a commitment that the United States is not putting boots on the ground into Ukraine, but we are supporting Ukraine in their efforts to take back their sovereign territory.

Q:  Well, shooting those targets, say from Polish or Romanian territory, would that be putting boots on the ground?

MS. SINGH:  That would be involving us in a war in a different way. And right now, we feel that Ukraine has been able to successfully defend against Russian strikes to their cities, to their populations, to their infrastructure. And we’re going to continue to make sure that they have the support that they need to do that.

Then, give the Ukrainians the damned guns and permissions to defend themselves! Most of the thousands of relevant weapons and platforms in Western armies will never be used & end up as scrap metal. This stuff was once built to fight the Russian army & can now be used accordingly. https://t.co/jLIsdK6u7H

Friday Evening Open Thread: Tina Peters, This Week’s #FAFO Queen

by Anne Laurie|  October 4, 20247:01 pm| 165 Comments

This post is in: Jan 6: Insurrection, Open Threads, Republican Venality

Election denier Tina Peters laughed during her sentencing, argued with the judge, and then was led away in handcuffs to serve a 9-year sentence. @MarcSallinger reports for @nexton9news. #copolitics pic.twitter.com/ruiGoUAco5

— Kyle Clark (@KyleClark) October 4, 2024

For those who missed the comments in this morning’s dawn post (or who just want to enjoy it again)…

Tina Peters, former Colorado clerk, sentenced 9 years for voting scheme. She lied at her sentencing which is stupid. She asked for mercy while lying. Judge said she was unserious. She will have ample time to think about her lying. Trump can’t pardon her. https://t.co/LvB25HOofL

— John W. Dean (@JohnWDean) October 3, 2024

Per the Associated Press:

A judge ripped into a Colorado county clerk for her crimes and lies before sentencing her Thursday to nine years behind bars for a data-breach scheme spawned from the rampant false claims about voting machine fraud in the 2020 presidential race.

District Judge Matthew Barrett told former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters — after earlier sparring with her for continuing to press discredited claims about rigged voting machines — that she never took her job seriously.

“I am convinced you would do it all over again if you could. You’re as defiant as any defendant this court has ever seen,” Barrett told her in handing down the sentence. “You are no hero. You abused your position and you’re a charlatan.”

Jurors found Peters guilty in August for allowing a man to misuse a security card to access to the Mesa County election system and for being deceptive about that person’s identity…

At trial, prosecutors said Peters, a Republican, was seeking fame and became “fixated” on voting problems after becoming involved with those who had questioned the accuracy of the presidential election results.

A one-time hero to election deniers, Peters has been unapologetic about what happened.

Before being sentenced, Peters insisted that everything she did to try to unroot what she believed was fraud was for the greater good…

It’s impossible to overestimate the damage Peters has done to other election workers in Colorado and elsewhere, Colorado County Clerks Association director Matt Crane told the court.

“In a real and specific way, her actions have led directly to death threats and general threats to the lives and the families of the people who work in our elections,” Crane said. “She has willingly aided individuals in our country who believe that violence is a way to make a point. She has knowingly fueled a fire within others who choose threats as a means to get their way.”

He, his wife and his children have been among those threatened, Crane said.

Open Thread (and Harris Rallies in Michigan)

What’s everybody up to today?

Two Harris events today

Putting this up after the first rally, shortly before the second one, so we won’t be waiting for an hour or more if it starts late.

2pm Eastern — Detroit

This seems to have been a union event, maybe firefighters and the UAW.

6pm Eastern — Flint

Have any of you been to Harris rallies?  I’m curious whether they are all mostly the same speech each time, or if she focuses on different things in different states.

If you’ve been to a rally, what was it like?

Totally open thread.
