Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

The revolution will be supervised.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

“They all knew.”

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Celebrate the fucking wins.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Sorry, Another Boebert Kid Update

by @heymistermix.com|  February 29, 20246:23 pm| 150 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Eighteen and horrible:

The felony charges that Representative Lauren Boebert’s eighteen-year-old son, Tyler, got hit with on Tuesday, February 27, stem from a series of car thefts in Rifle, where he and some underage friends robbed several people, including a woman with a brain tumor who said she had just $75 “left to her name,” according to police.

Tyler was allegedly part of a four person crime ring with two female minors and another male minor (Tyler’s 18, so not a minor).  One of the minor females “supposedly made a sex tape” with Tyler, according to an affadavit. In addition to allegedly stealing from a woman with a brain tumor, they took credit cards from parked cars and bought $717 worth of clothes on fast fashion site Shein, as well as spending a bunch of money at Kum & Go (a convenience store) and Love’s (a truck stop).

Updated to add:  John Fetterman is a better person than me.

It’s my hope that what we are seeing is the last gasp from the right wing, as they fight to hold on to the privilege they feel entitled to.

In the end, we, the American people – not any of our institutions – have to save our democracy by voting in defense of that democracy this fall. The responsibility is ours. ~ Eric Holder

Quilt Raffle for Four Directions in Montana – We Need To Keep This Senate Seat

Quiltingfool has made us another gorgeous quilt to auction off, this time for Four Directions in Montana!

Let’s keep Jon Tester in his seat, shall we, and go for 51 or 52 seats in the Senate.

This stunning quilt is square – 94″ x 94″.  (Quilt would sell for $575)

Here’s a close-up of the center of the quilt.  I love the colors, and the design, hope you guys like it, too.

Raffle tickets are $25 each, same process as last time.

There will be 2nd, 3rd, and 4th prizes – quilt blocks – more details to come.  So 4 chances to win!

Hoping we can get our Montan thermometer up to $45,000 – with the $30,000 match we got before the holidays and the $5,000 angle match check that’s not reflected in the thermometer, that will give Four Directions a total of $80,000 from us for Montana.

Quick update on Four Directions and Montana

Next week, the folks at Four Directions (OJ, Barb, their daughter Donna, and Bret) will be meeting with Tribal Leaders from the Blackfeet Nation and Fort Belknap Indian Community at the Coalition of Tribes meeting on March 8-9, 2024 in Las Vegas to discuss Four Directions’ Get-Out-The-Native-Vote campaign, including planning the initial road trip in mid-April to start recruitment of Native staff for training and engagement.

Bret and I have a call scheduled for March 10 so he can fill me in on some of the planning, so look for more detailed information soon!

Looks like we can use one!

Gotta love his style!

Rep Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla) usually wears sneakers but today has on funereal attire, he says, for the death of the Joe Biden impeachment inquiry.

“You have to pay respects,” he told me. pic.twitter.com/KNxwYqZYZq

.

Moskowitz: I think my colleagues and I are witnessing the death of the fake frivolous Biden impeachment inquiry. In fact as a Jewish American, when this is over, I will say Mourner’s Kaddish pic.twitter.com/aXPdaxN7PH

Fake, faux, frivolous.  I’m gonna have to use that as a post title.

The Supreme Court Has Shown Us Who They Are

by WaterGirl|  February 29, 202410:30 am| 266 Comments

This post is in: Politics, Supreme Court, Supreme Court Corruption, Trump Indictments

The Supreme Court has shown us who they are.

Yeah, we knew before.   But I would have thought that they would want to preserve at least a fig leaf to cover up their blatant corruption.

It would have been possible for them to have granted cert in this case – based on a principled stand – to make it clear once and for all that the President of the United States is not a king, so there could be no doubt.  No one is king – not a serving U.S. President, not an outgoing U.S. President, not an incoming president.

They could have laid down a marker to say that the office of President of the United States is not a get out of jail free card for any or all crimes.

But to take up this case on the timeframe they set forth – where we don’t even know for sure if we will get a ruling before the end of this term in July – and where even a ruling by July could quite possibly delay the D.C. trial until after the election – this is in-your-face corruption, proudly on display, with a fuck you to the country (instead of a cherry) on top.

Well, I say fuck you back.

It’s up to us now, and I guess we have the currently serving SCOTUS to thank for the clarity.

Be sure to share your thoughts about SCOTUS helping Trump avoid justice to the Supreme Court. No threats though!! pic.twitter.com/1nJzVUBS0Q

So, besides making our opinions known to the Supreme Court, what else are we gonna do about it?

My view of the SCOTUS action: if the trial is delayed until after November, we will see THE LARGEST BLUE WAVE IN HISTORY.

If November becomes a referendum on whether Trump faces justice, then Democrats will absolutely flip the House, keep the White House and expand the Senate. https://t.co/BcRlMrJIdJ

What the goddamn fucking HELL?!?

Sorry — just catching up on last night’s Supreme Court fuckery. Looks like we’ve got six Aileen “Loose” Cannons on the court. That’s not good.

Open thread.

ETA — excerpt from analysis by Mark Joseph Stern at Slate:

Even in light of this Supreme Court’s hard-right lean, Wednesday’s order is stunning: a massive gift to Trump that can only be seen as a partisan bid to help him avoid a conviction for his attempt to subvert American democracy. There is no other plausible reason for the justices to sit on his petition for so long, or to schedule arguments so far ahead in the future. Maybe the court could have justified hearing the case very quickly, not because it presents a difficult legal issue (it does not) but because it has clear national importance (and therefore should be ruled on by the highest court). But the court didn’t take that route. Rather, it played this exactly how Trump wanted. Its chosen course of action should set off very loud alarm bells. The court evidently willing to run interference for Trump—who, after all, appointed three members of the conservative majority that is surely behind this delay tactic.

The justices could have used this moment to prove their independence, which might have had the salutary side effect of shoring up their rock-bottom approval ratings. They decided instead to let Trump wield the Supreme Court as a weapon against Jack Smith’s prosecution. In a choice between integrity and cynical partisan loyalty, a majority picked the latter. Wednesday’s move is a harrowing indication that the court will gladly twist the rules to help Trump win reelection and evade accountability. It is a harrowing omen that the Supreme Court cannot be trusted to protect our democracy from Trump’s malignant assault.

God help us if the SCOTUS gets involved in a swing state vote counting matter in the upcoming election. Let’s make sure it’s not close enough to steal.
