Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The lights are all blinking red.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Be a wild strawberry.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Petty moves from a petty man.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

War for Ukraine Day 689: Russia Unleashed a Mass Bombardment Just Before Dawn, Again!

Screen shot of new artwork by NEIVANMADE. The background is black. In the bottom foreground are grey Ukrainian homes and apartment buildings being bombarded by red Russian missiles with the Special Military Operation "Z" symbol on them. Above the missiles, written in red is the word "Ruzzians". Below the buildings being attacked is the statement "Turns Homes Into Graves".

Russia launched another mass bombardment of Ukraine this morning just before dawn.

Do you know what's in the right corner? It's Kinzhal missile Russia launched toward Ukrainian cities. It's 6 am, and people are rushing to the shelters pic.twitter.com/RngMbpssul

— Maria Avdeeva (@maria_avdv) January 13, 2024

Guess what people in Ukraine have been doing since 6am of this Saturday morning? Right, sitting in shelters and hiding in corridors as a new barrage of russian missiles travels around seeking whom to kill & what to destroy. Pure terrorism pic.twitter.com/Uny50SoDAj

— Olena Halushka (@OlenaHalushka) January 13, 2024

Russia changed tactics and launched 40 missiles and drones at regions not covered by Patriot systems. Eight were downed, and over 20 electronically suppressed. Call for more weapons is not abstract – Russia is depleting Ukrainian air-defense pic.twitter.com/1ZCVqIoygD

Euan MacDonald, a freelance journalist in Kyiv, live tweeted the entire air alert. I’ll have that after the jump.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

After reading about Trump’s counter-programming to Wednesday’s sad GOP primary debate — like looking at a solar eclipse through a pinhole camera — maybe we should be taking note of some of the really horrible statements?

If only to share them with those among our loved ones / acquaintances who tell us maybe he’s not so bad, they never see this stuff on the front page of the NYTimes, it’s all just a performance?

Obvious trigger warning
: What’s below the fold is extremely nasty, yes.

Ceviche Heaven

by John Cole|  January 13, 20243:13 pm| 225 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "Stories from the Road", John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

Joelle is taking Jack to go see his owner who is in assisted living, so I have the house to myself. Me being me, I immediately showered and went out on a little lunch adventure. One of the things that is hard for Joelle to understand is that I really am a solitary individual. I very much enjoy being alone, doing things by myself, and I need vast amounts of time with zero meaningful human interaction. I am fine being around people at restaurants or grocery stores, etc., just the only people I want to talk to are cashiers or wait staff.

Actually, as I read this I realize that’s bullshit, she completely understands and is very tolerant and respectful that about me, I am just projecting shit onto her. I’m the one with the problem because I feel like I am ignoring her or avoiding her and feel guilt about it. For whatever reason, I feel guilt about moving across the country to be with her then going to a room and shutting the door to be by myself. So what I was initially doing there was blaming my guilt on her by pretending she doesn’t understand.

This is also why I like to write instead of talk extemporaneously because it gives me the time to think and come to the right conclusion. Or better conclusion.

Back to the fucking point. I immediately hosed myself off, hopped in the car, and drove to a Mexican place for ceviche. I found this place called Mariscos El Wicho, a nice little family run joint in one of the billions of strip malls around here. There are more here than in Columbus, Ohio.

At any rate, I had some initial concern because it was so clean, but I ordered a ceviche platter and it was fucking awesome. And massive. I have enough for dinner. I had also never had it with mayo before. You squirt a very little mayo onto a tostada, and it sounds gross, but it gives it this creamy finish. I tried it on one just to experience it, and then went back to just eating it normally (for me).

ALSO THEY HAVE APPLE SODA- Sidral Mundet! I do not know if I have mentioned it here but I do know I have tweeted about it and everyone who knows me I would probably commit murder to get Apple Slice back into production.

That’s it for now, I will check in later.

Saturday Morning Open Thread: Iowa Caucus Weather

Or, hear me out, Laura.
God hates Trump. https://t.co/SqTrEu2bht

— Marmel (@Marmel) January 12, 2024

Caucus-time temperatures on Monday are forecast to be as low as -17F (-27C), which would be the coldest ever for the event https://t.co/KBTFV4mUYz via @bpolitics @gregorykorte

— Megan Howard (@megan_e_howard) January 12, 2024

Politico has a long Sunday-magazine piece on “How the Pros Think the Iowa Caucuses Will Shake Out”. (Spoiler: TFG will be the winner, but his organization has been nervous enough about the final totals that they’ve been putting a lot of effort & money in, over the last several weeks.) Comment from a local reporter concerning the weather:

… Pfannenstiel: I think we have to look at enthusiasm numbers, too. Donald Trump has the most enthusiastic, most locked in supporters, according to Des Moines Register polling, compared to Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. The people who want to caucus for Donald Trump really want to caucus for Donald Trump. And there’s less excitement for DeSantis and for Haley, and Iowans have thick skin but this is a really serious weather situation. The temperatures are going to be in dangerous territory for people to spend a lot of time outside. So if you’re looking at how well run are some of these precinct locations, are there long lines to get in? Are people going to show up to a place where the parking lots are not plowed? Part of this comes down to management of caucus night and how well the county parties in the precinct locations are able to prepare for the weather and to make sure that people can get in because there are a lot of barriers to participation to showing up and any additional thing could turn people away…

This is going to be the greatest mass die-off of Republicans since covid. https://t.co/fSq9YLxxmC

Late Night Open Thread

This post is in: Open Threads

These little stories are from an article about people who are making a difference, and I thought little pieces of it might make good late night posts.  A little bit of inspiration, perhaps, at the start of an open thread.

But talk about whatever you want!

In a year that made many of us want to give up, these unsung activists found a way to help others.

The Anti-Gentrifier

Debra Ack teaches her neighbors in Brooklyn about community land trusts as a tool to keep neighborhoods affordable.Credit…Jade Doskow for The New York Times

Debra Ack came to activism late in life, as a 62-year-old former administrative assistant who got involved in the newly formed East New York Community Land Trust. Three years later, as the special projects coordinator she has been instrumental in drawing political attention to a long-neglected neighborhood straddling patches of Brooklyn and Queens that is prone to flooding, mold infestations, overflowing septic systems and illegal trash dumping.

Equally significant has been her work educating her neighbors in East New York about community land trusts, which are relatively new to the city but have a long history in California. They battle rising housing costs and keep real estate out of the hands of predatory developers. These trusts buy land, then typically issue 99-year ground leases to homeowners who consent to sell the houses or buildings on the land back to the trust at a restricted price to ensure affordability over the long term.

“We want people to know how they can bring ownership back to their communities,” Ms. Ack said. The East New York Community Land Trust is expected to close on its first property in January — a 21-unit apartment building that has fallen into disrepair. With the help of money raised through donations and low-interest loans, Ms. Ack said, the trust will buy both the land and the building and then turn the building over to the tenants living there, who will eventually own their units as co-ops.

War for Ukraine Day 688: Air Defense Over Kyiv & the Preservation of Ukrainian Art History

by Adam L Silverman|  January 12, 20249:56 pm| 16 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, United Kingdom, War, War in Ukraine

From 4 hours ago:

⚡️Explosions sound in Kyiv.

Following an air raid alert and warnings of drone attacks, Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said that air defense was working in the city.

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) January 12, 2024

Air raid alert in Kyiv now, coming shortly after Rishi Sunak’s departure from the Ukrainian capital. Explosions from defense systems audible on the outskirts of the city, as another Russian aerial attack is underway.

— Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM) January 12, 2024

Sirens in Kyiv. Telegram channels report Shahed drones en route…

— Mark MacKinnon (@markmackinnon) January 12, 2024

Right now – 9:30 PM EST – the air alert tracker for Ukraine is clear except for the northwestern corner of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Russian occupied Luhansk Oblast and Russian occupied Crimea. The former is under artillery fire alert and the latter two are under the usual 24/7 air raid alerts.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Friday Night Open Thread

by John Cole|  January 12, 20249:18 pm| 65 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "Stories from the Road", John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

Another long day of getting shit done, unlike this fucking guy:

Friday Night Open Thread 7

I wonder how it is that these guys are so clueless about how they really are seen by the world. That white male shit mus be good stuff, I should get some. Who the fuck am I kidding? Were I born black and poor somewhere I would have been doing hard time the amount of bullshit I pulled. I can think of about 50 things I did before I even turned 18 that would have had a black kid in jail well into his 20’s. But by the luck of the color of my skin I got life on “just the story” while other dudes were on “insanity” mode from the get go (those were gaming references for you olds).

At any rate spent the day working while taking breaks to do things around the house. Got the kitchen about 2/3 of the way done, and next I am gonna work on the sun room/dog room.

Joelle is feeling down so I just texted her “gravy” and she said “yes,” so I put a little mozz on the leftover risotto and baked it, then breaded some chicken breasts and pan baked them. I was going to just bake them, but the breasts were so uneven I would never get both of them done at the same time, so I basically took the two breasts and whittled them into little cutlets/tenders. Made a roux and whipped up some gravy, and then made some a veggie side. She’s on the couch recovering now.

Speaking of Joelle, she’s still adjusting to life with an ADHD adult. She gets less annoyed when I leave the room mid sentence, do something (well probably 5-6 somethings as they catch my eye) for ten minutes somewhere else, come back and finish my sentence. That has to be aggravating for her, although 99% of the time were people to stop talking to me mid-sentence and then fuck off out of the room and my area of operation, I’d probably be fucking thrilled.

She’s also learning how to teach me. I’ve been doing the laundry and she has been folding and putting things away since I don’t know where things are, and that means I have to hunt for anything I want to wear. Yesterday though, when she folded and put away my overalls and various long sleeve shirts, she put them in a drawer she had not used before, but cleverly left the drawer partially open with an overall strap dangling from it. I walked in after a shower and started to think “Where are my overalls it’s 36 degrees out)” and I saw the strap.

Thought that was pretty clever of the lady and told her how much I appreciated the trail of bread crumbs to my knickers. So that’s about it.
