Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The revolution will be supervised.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Optimism opens the door to great things.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Stand up, dammit!

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

I met with a group of scholars and historians in the Oval to get their viewpoints on ongoing threats to democracy – at home and around the world.

They understand what history has taught us:

On The Road – Captain C – Amsterdam, October 2023, Part 7

Captain C

The next day, Thursday, I headed down to Den Haag to have dinner with three cousins who live in the area. Getting to the administrative capital of the Netherlands is very easy, just an hour-ish train ride. The last few are from walking around Amsterdam that evening after I got back.

When its inhabitants call the state Misery… Yes, Jay is in fact the son of John Ashcroft, Dubya’s choice for U.S. Attorney General and “the only U.S. Senator defeated for re-election by a dead person”.

BORIS SANCHEZ: What would be your justification for removing Joe Biden from the ballot in Missouri?

JAY ASHCROFT: There have been allegations that he's engaged in insurrection

SANCHEZ: How so?

ASHCROFT: Um, I've seen allegations from the lieutenant governor of Texas pic.twitter.com/687uqKyCUw

But Jay will never reach the fathomless depths achieved by Willard Romney, son of that vanished species, a *decent* Republican…

Late Night Open Thread

These little stories are from an interesting article featuring good people who are making a difference.  written by Harry Bellafante’s daughter, Ginnia, and.    I thought little pieces of it might make good late night posts.  A little bit of inspiration, perhaps, at the start of an open thread.

But talk about whatever you want!

In a year that made many of us want to give up, these unsung activists found a way to help others.

The Rabbis’ Rabbi

The war in Gaza has divided New York City’s Jewish community in a way that is nearly without precedent, in some cases rupturing friendships that have spanned decades. When rabbis find themselves needing guidance navigating tensions within their congregations, they turn to Jill Jacobs to lower the volume. Rabbi Jacobs runs T’ruah, an organization directed at advancing human rights in this country, in Israel and in the occupied territories.

“People are screaming at each other in slogans,” she said. Her job, as she sees it, “is to keep the human story front and center,” to connect rabbis to one another to share their wisdom as well as advise them. Rachel Timoner, senior rabbi at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn, said Rabbi Jacobs “has given us language and clarity when we really needed it.”

“The moral truth that Jewish tradition calls us to — she will say it, regardless of popularity,” Rabbi Timoner added. “Her courage enables a large number of people to trust her voice. And she is fearless.”

From Six New Yorkers Who Made the City a Better, Cooler, Fairer Place in 2023.  Written by Harry Bellafante’s daughter, Ginia Bellafante, who writes the Big City column, a weekly commentary on the politics, culture and life of New York City.

Monday Night Open Thread

This post is in: John Cole Presents "Stories from the Road", John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

I really have to get into this time zone change and posting stuff earlier, but, whatever. You’ll get it when you get it.

Had a long day doing things and have a couple of observations. The first of which that in general, on most roads, drivers around here are not too insane. They seem generally aware of things like speed limits and turn signals, and mostly appear cognizant that they are, in fact, behind the wheel of a guided missile than can kill a lot of people.

Having said that, there seems to be some sort of unwritten agreement among people around here that while you drive like a responsible person in most places, ALL FUCKING BETS ARE OFF ON THE I-10 and I-17. This is where you let it all out. It’s Vegas, but a highway- what happens on the I-10 stays on the I-10. Fucking maniacs. It’s as bad as i-95 around Miami.

The second observation is that in many ways it really sucks a lot more to be poor in a city than it does in the country. Yes, transportation is easier, but you can’t afford anything once you get there. There’s shitloads of places I would like to go and see and places I would like to eat, but fucking hell everything is so expensive. In the country, you just don’t have shit to do, period.

Paid no attention to politics today. I think I am better off for it.

War for Ukraine Day 684: (Some of) You Have Questions I (May) Have Answers

Russia once again opened up on Ukrainian civilian targets overnight:

We urge our partners to continue supporting Ukrainian air defense.

Last night in comments Jazz Bass asked:

Hi Adam, yesterday you mentioned that it seems unlikely that the $300 billion in Russian assets are going to be used to support Ukraine. When you have chance could you, please, elaborate why that’s the case?

Thanks!

There are several reasons why. The first is that no one is sure if this is legal under anyone’s laws, whether that’s American, Canadian, EU, any of the individual EU member states, and/or international law. The second is that there is a lot of concern, especially in the US, but also in the EU, that if the US or the EU were to go forward with this it would make both individual, organizational/corporate, and state investors leery of holding dollars or euros as investments, keeping said dollars or euros in US, EU, and/or individual EU member state banks, and owning tangible assets in the US, the EU, and/or individual EU member states.

I understand why President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians want this done. I don’t necessarily think it is a bad idea, but given how risk averse the Biden administration, the Scholz government in Germany, Macron in France, and a number of other leaders of EU and/or NATO member states have been, I don’t see it happening.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Biden called this “the time in choosing” in America. "We've come too far from where we started. Nobody told me the road would be easy. I don't believe he brought me this far to leave me. My fellow Americans, I don't think the good Lord brought us this far to leave us behind." pic.twitter.com/PIs1AGcOSJ

President Joe Biden's speech at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C. was interrupted momentarily Monday by pro-Palestinian protesters calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. pic.twitter.com/OXufYcv7L7

— The Associated Press (@AP) January 8, 2024

This would not be my chosen method of drawing attention, frankly, but I appreciate President Biden’s response…

Two protestors interrupt Biden at Mother Emanuel to chant “Ceasefire now!”

Hundreds start cheering “four more years!”

Biden:
“I understand their passion and I am quietly working with the Israeli government to get them to reduce significantly and get out of Gaza.”
