Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Do not forget…

It is up to us, We the People, to stand up for America. We know what happened to 1930s Germany. But we have two advantages: 1) a quarter millennium of democracy, and 2) the example of 1930s Germany.

Do not obey. Do not succumb to fear. You will gain nothing through surrender. https://t.co/chmu5d6tBH

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: African Violets 3

From our multi-talented WereBear:

Some shots of my African violets, which are like the indoor version of roses. Need extra care, bloom abundantly, lots of colors.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: African Violets 1

I have no idea what their names are. It was a “get them in little pots, all different.” I got six.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: African Violets

Indoors is the right environment for them. I think anyone who is willing to devote a bit of time will have success. Because they’re not difficult.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: African Violets 2

They’re just fussy :)

What’s going on in your garden (indoor / retrospective / planning), this week?

War for Ukraine Day 1,004: Holodomor Memorial Day

A screen shot of NEIVANMADE's painting commemorating the Holodomor. The painting is of a loaf of brown bread with a candle in its center on a table or ledge in fromt of a window. Outside the window it is dark, but the shapes of people can be seen through the glass. "1932 - 1933" is above the top of the window. Below the table is the word "GENOCIDE".

A quick housekeeping note: Rosie is doing great. Thank you for all the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations to help with her chemo.

Today is Holodomor Memorial Day. It is the third one since since Putin ordered Russia’s genocidal re-invasion. A re-invasion that is the second time in 100 years that a dictator in Moscow has attempted to obliterate the Ukrainians, their state, society, culture, and traditions.

One of the few surviving photo evidence of the Holodomor, taken by Alexander Wienerberger in 1933 in Kharkiv.
“Mother with her hungry children.”
“The body of the deceased from starvation on the street.”
“The line for bread at the market.”
“Mass graves near Kharkiv.”

I love this very touching video from many years ago, about Ukrainian children who died in the Holodomor.
She says: You brought me an apple?
The boy asks: How did you know?
She replies: People always bring me apples😭

I recently came across a short documentary on Ukraine’s history between WWI and WWII by Kings and Generals. You might find many parallels with today. It has some oversimplifications, although a more nuanced video would take hundreds of hours. Highly recommended

The comedy show last night was a lot of fun, and Matteo Lane has much of the same energy as a young Kathy Griffin, so if you liked her, you will love him. The LGBTQ community was out in full force, and at some point in the show Matteo asked the straight men in the theater to clap, and all eight of us did. Let me put it this way- this is the first time I have been to a large public event and there was no line for the women’s bathroom and the men’s was a mile long. At any rate, we arrived early, and it made for some great people watching.

We were out so late that we slept in and I accomplished absolutely nothing today and it was lovely. Joelle went out and did some things and picked up a reindoor costume for Thurston, and he looks instead like a despondent qanon shaman:

I genuinely think Biden should issue a shitload if pardons to his administration on the way out the door and maybe resign with ten minutes left to go so President Harris can pardon him too.

The Stupid Economy

Charts like this one are making the rounds, showing that post-election consumer sentiment has flipped, with Republicans over 100 (positive sentiment) for the first time in a while, and Democrats heading into negative territory.

Anyway, a lot of this is down to Fox News and friends, but even people who read regular media are pretty ignorant of the facts of the economy:

Conservative media, unsurprisingly, appears to be a major culprit in the miseducation of the American public, with people whose primary media source is conservative media registering lower familiarity with reality than those who stuck mainly to other media sources. (Reliance on social media, too, was associated with less knowledge of basic facts.)

But even among those who primarily get their news from the more general category of cable/national newspapers, a third didn’t realize that inflation had declined over the past year. Voters’ lack of knowledge, therefore, cannot simply be laid at the feet of the conservative press. Corporate outlets more broadly must share the blame. […] […] journalists over the past several years have engaged in a collective freak-out over a surge in inflation, feeding the public’s pre-existing negativity bias with a hyper-fixation on rising prices in economic coverage. That this coverage has not only overshadowed coverage of more positive economic stories—such as the successes of a historically progressive stimulus bill, and the massive wage gains it has spurred—but has misled the public about basic economic facts in the process is a scandal.

The whole piece is worth a read because it runs through a few basic reporting errors/biases with mainstream political reporting.

The Apprentice Factor

This is an interesting research article by two political scientists.  Abstract:

American voters consume an astounding amount of entertainment media, yet its political consequences are often neglected. We argue that this ostensibly apolitical content can create unique opportunities for politicians to build parasocial ties with voters. We study this question in the context of Donald Trump’s unconventional political trajectory and investigate the electoral consequences of The Apprentice. Using an array of data—content analysis, surveys, Twitter data, open-ended answers—we investigate how this TV program helped Trump brand himself as a competent leader and foster viewers’ trust in him. Exploiting the geographic variation in NBC channel inertia, we find that exposure to The Apprentice increased Donald Trump’s electoral performance in the 2016 Republican primary. We discuss the implications of these findings in light of the rise of nonconventional politicians in this golden age of entertainment.

I don’t know how to evaluate their research methodology, but I sure think Trump’s Apprentice stardom isn’t given enough weight by the political press.  For instance, the huge effort they put into creating a Ron DeSantis boomlet, which fizzled the moment that people actually saw what a stiff that guy is, shows that it’s Trump himself, not just Trump’s authoritarianism, that powers Trump’s appeal.  As far as I’m concerned, that’s good news for Democrats, because some zero charisma stiff who is “a competent Trump” is going to have a harder time with low information voters, simply because of the groundwork laid by Trump’s reality show stardom.

As the authors point out in the paper, the way TV was watched during the time of the Apprentice, which mostly pre-dated streaming, is quite different from the way that people watch TV today.  Maybe someone like Joe Rogan is as close a parallel to Trump’s Apprentice audience.  According to the paper, the Apprentice had 28.1 million viewers at its peak of popularity.  As of this Spring, Rogan had 14.5 followers on Spotify, and 16.4 YouTube followers and 18.9 million Instagram followers.
