No Kings – JR Orlando lurker – Orlando!

by WaterGirl|  October 18, 20254:00 pm| 50 Comments

This post is in: No Kings Oct 18, 2025, Open Threads

JR from Orlando here. I am a lurker on the site.

Our report on the Orlando protest:

My wife and I attended the protest at City Hall with some friends. This was by far the largest protest of the year with really large crowd. The protest was in the morning because we also have the Orlando Pride Parade scheduled on the same day. We march in the parade every year so today is going to be a long day but so worth it.

Very well organized protest with multiple speakers and enthusiastic crowd. Some really clever, touching, entertaining signs. As many have pointed out, the crowd was vocal but peaceful. Lots of young people including some kids. One young girl led the crowd in pro-democracy chants for a while and received very enthusiastic and vocal response.

Lots of passing cars honked in support. Unlike the last protest, I did not see any MAGA counter protesters or trolls trying to invade the crowd. We left after 1.5 hours to get ready for the Pride parade. We saw a large group protesters holding up signs with loud chanting in an impromptu march from City Hall to Lake Eola. People with signs were all over downtown. Signs are not allowed in the parade area but plenty of people were walking around wearing protest t-shirts.

Thanks and Regards

(Note from WG: love the lobster that is boiling mad about the gaslighting!)

No Kings in Connecticut! Or in Clearwater!

This post is in: No Kings Oct 18, 2025, Open Threads, Political Action

I just want to say how encouraging it is that there are No Kings rallies in solidarity in other countries.  I hope it’s not just Americans abroad, because it gives me hope that people around the world understand that what he is doing does not represent all of us.  It gives me hope that there may be a way back internationally.  Not to what we were, but to somewhere we can be a force for good in the world.

Commenter J. sent images of two signs for their No Kings rally in Connecticut today.

You may remember J. from her Sanibel Mysteries and because their place in Sanibel was destroyed in the hurricane a few years back.

My sister’s birthday was yesterday, and every year I send her one of the Sanibel Mysteries for her birthday, so it was nice to hear from J. today!

Love love love this sign!

Good turnout for our local #NoKings protest this morning at the old county courthouse!

More than 1200 at the #NoKings rally in my Trumpy little Florida town. Much bigger than the last protest (because things are so much worse). Power to the people!

We saw at least one inflatable frog, an inflatable unicorn, a guy in a chicken suit and an inflatable t-rex. Lots of American flags. Many passing cars honked horns in solidarity.

Organizers were walking the line, passing out water and urging folks to stay calm and deescalate if anyone tried to bait us. Very few people yelled rude stuff at us, and there were no rolling coalers like there were at the June protest.

One Duck Dynasty dude lookalike on a Harley rolled by slowly and yelled IDIOTS at us. A group of feisty Latina women standing adjacent to Bill and me called that dude a pendejo, but that was about it.

The atmosphere was festive. The Latina women got Bill to take their pictures while holding up their signs.

One of the women told us she’s an immigrant who has been here for 45 years. She said she’s not afraid of the local Trump cult assholes, that they are weak losers. I think she’s right. I think we will win.

Republican officials have spent years psy-oping themselves into thinking that there are no sincere, good faith liberals or progressives anywhere in America. So no wonder they're totally unequipped to deal with a large crowd of normal people waving American flags.

— Ned Resnikoff (@resnikoff.bsky.social) October 15, 2025 at 1:05 PM

So far they seem to be oscillating between:
-"These normal people waving American flags hate America, actually."
-"What we have here are millions of paid protestors."
-And my favorite, "No kings is bad and unamerican, actually."

— Ned Resnikoff (@resnikoff.bsky.social) October 15, 2025 at 1:07 PM

People got mad at me during Trump I when I suggested that black bloc and the far right are actually symbiotic life forms, but it couldn't be clearer that the GOP *wants* black bloc to be their main enemy and don't know what to do about the fact that it isn't.

?Welcome to No Kings Eve. Trump is sounding and behaving kingly, and Republicans are at DEFCON 1 on the desperation meter. You can tell by their hallucinatory talking points, which are untethered from both reality and the Constitution. New from me at @msnbc.com:
www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb…

— Jill Lawrence (@jilldlawrence.bsky.social) October 17, 2025 at 7:59 AM

You might find this hard to believe, but Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans are making stuff up. This is a go-to move when they fear their power and corrupt authoritarian plans are at risk, and that’s happening a lot lately. Now, with millions of people signed up to attend thousands of “No Kings” demonstrations Saturday across America, the GOP’s desperation meter is at DEFCON 1.

The alarm is clear from the overwrought Republican leaders spouting hallucinatory talking points in which “No Kings” protests become “‘Hate America’ rallies.” They are weaving a tale of extremists, terrorists, Marxists, agitators, “the pro-Hamas crowd” (House Speaker Mike Johnson’s phrase), and professional protesters supposedly paid by billionaire George Soros. It’s straight-up fearmongering.

In truth, anti-Trump protests, like the first “No Kings” demonstrations earlier this year, have drawn people of all backgrounds, united not by payment but by their deep concern — even despair — about what’s happening to their country. Some may show up this weekend wearing inflatable costumes as frogs, chickens, bears, dinosaurs or unicorns, as they have in Portland, Oregon, and outside Chicago. In D.C., we might once again see and hear a trombonist with the stage name Michael McTrouserpants…

While the president and his allies have been known to revel in violence against Trump’s political opponents, the No Kings website features links to primers on safety, de-escalation, and “sacred” religious protest traditions, and this stern warning: “A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.”…

The fictional GOP portrait of protesters as deplorables and undesirables is part of a strategy to stop the resistance before it flexes its growing power against a president who is already decidedly unpopular. Nonviolent public protests can generate dramatic changes in public opinion and, ultimately, in public awareness and public policy as well.

There’s a niche, it appears, for ‘contrarian’ Repubs to publicly buck Don TACO. Massie, like MTG, has a *very* secure seat; pundits could dismiss MTG as ‘complaining because she’s been snubbed for the positions she wanted’, but if an MIT grad perceives a way to triangulate between Trump’s demands for fealty and his MAGAt constituents’ interest in the Epstein files, well…

GOP Rep. Massie raised $768K from July through September — the best fundraising quarter of his career under threat of being ousted by a Trump-linked super PAC.

— Politico (@politico.com) October 15, 2025 at 10:31 AM

Per Politico:

Rep. Thomas Massie raised $768,000 from July through September — the best fundraising quarter of his career under threat of being ousted by a super PAC linked to President Donald Trump.

The Kentucky Republican’s campaign committee also reported more than $2 million cash on hand at the end of September, according to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday morning.

Massie has come under fire from the White House after contradicting Trump on several major issues, including voting against the domestic policy megabill central to enacting the administration’s legislative agenda and pushing for the full release of the Jeffrey Epstein files…

While Massie has beaten back primary challengers before, his substantial war chest at this time could help him next year if Trump and his inner circle take their attacks on the incumbent to the next level.

Massie is also counting on support from his own colleagues in fending off a potential competitor. Most of the campaign contributions in the latest fundraising quarter came from individual donors, but Massie also received $2,000 each from committees linked to Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul and House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). A leadership PAC connected to Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) gave Massie $5,000.

War for Ukraine Day 1,331: Moscow on the Potomac

A black and white cartoon with Popeye the Sailor Man facing forward and to the left. His word bubble says "I Yam Disgustipated"

I’m going to keep tonight’s update on the brief(ish) side. I had a long day, not bad, just long, and I want to just zone out.

President Zelenskyy met with President Trump today. Unfortunately, the last person Trump spoke to about Ukraine’s war of defense against Russia’s genocidal re-invasion before meeting with President Zelenskyy was Putin.

Trump makes it sound like Zelensky refuses to “stop the killing” and returns to calling on Ukraine to surrender occupied territories. Three weeks ago, he said, “I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.”

Not that I think they’d have made a real difference given Ukraine’s own weapons development, but the symbolism would’ve been important.

And Putin knows that his influence operation/phone call with Trump yesterday was effective:

Q: What if Putin doesn’t agree to peace during your meeting in Hungary? What then?

TRUMP: Let’s see what happens. I think he will. I think President Putin wants to end the war.

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) October 17, 2025 at 1:42 PM

Putin definitely wants to end the war, but only if Ukraine is fully subordinated to Russia, absorbed into Russia, and everything that makes Ukraine Ukraine is destroyed. In that respect, yes Putin wants to end the war.

First Lady Zelenska had a busy day back in Ukraine. She visited the transplant unit of the children’s hospital “Okhmatdyt” and met with young patients and their parents.

Olena Zelenska Met Young Patients at the “Okhmatdyt” Transplantation Unit and Their Parents

17 October 2025 – 18:16

On the occasion of World Organ Donation and Transplantation Day, First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska visited the children’s hospital “Okhmatdyt” and met with young patients and their parents.

The family of Maksym Yaremenko shared that when he was just four months old, he developed severe liver damage. A compatible donor could not be found, so doctors performed the first incompatible transplant in Ukraine.

Polina Kostrytsia’s parents explained that at the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, their daughter was admitted to the hospital with liver cirrhosis. Alongside her mother, she had to descend into the basement six times a day, carrying an oxygen tank she depended on to breathe. Polina’s donor was her older brother.

The First Lady expressed her gratitude to the transplantation team for their work. The doctors have undergone training in Japan, the United States, and the Republic of Korea. They also collaborate with Polish colleagues from the Children’s Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw, which signed a Memorandum of Understanding with “Okhmatdyt” during the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen in September 2023.

“Our doctors are able not only to learn but also to share their unique experience, because Ukrainian transplants are now being performed under extreme conditions. Medical teams have learned to carry out procedures under Russian shelling and even during power outages. Today, visiting “Okhmatdyt,” its heroic patients and doctors, I think about how organ donation is called the highest form of humanity – because a person literally saves another by giving a part of themselves,” said Olena Zelenska.

The number of transplants in Ukraine grows each year. This year alone, more than 450 procedures have been performed. For comparison, during the same period last year, the number was slightly more than 370.

Here’s the video:

First Lady Zelenska also assisted with opening a a therapeutic garden at VDNG in Kyiv.

Therapeutic Garden Opened in Kyiv, Offering Everyone a Place to Heal Through Connection with Nature or Themselves – Olena Zelenska

17 October 2025 – 19:32

First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska took part in the opening of a therapeutic garden at VDNG in Kyiv. The space will provide rehabilitation and emotional support for defenders and anyone in need.

The garden features a therapeutic horticulture area, an adaptive sports ground, a zone for body-based practices, a green room called “Circle of Warmth,” and a space for group gatherings.

In addition, therapeutic programs are being developed through which rehabilitation specialists and psychologists will work with military personnel, veterans, their families, and affected civilians. At the same time, access to the site will be free for all visitors.

“All of us, especially those who have experienced the pain of war, currently lack places and situations that provide a sense of safety, calm, and harmony. Here, in the garden, we can at least get closer to that feeling. This is the therapeutic effect of nature and interacting with it, confirmed by many scientific studies. I hope that more such spaces will appear across Ukraine. We see this garden as a pilot project, which will gradually take root wherever it is needed,” said the First Lady.

The entire space is barrier-free: it is equipped with navigation aids for people with visual impairments, solid and non-slip surfaces, and rest areas with benches that have backs and armrests, alongside dedicated spaces for wheelchairs.

The project is being implemented by VDNG together with the Ministry of Veterans Affairs as part of the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Environment in Ukraine, initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska.

And here’s the video:

🛑 Irina Imerlishvili stepped down from her position with 11 months left in her term.

🛑 The GD plans to file a Constitutional Complaint seeking to ban around 10 opposition parties.
It is unclear whether Imerlishvili’s resignation is connected to this case.

Russian sources confirm the loss of a Su-30SM. They say that the jet crashed while hunting drones.

After firing a missile, a fire broke out onboard; the crew ejected safely. A state commission is “investigating.”
Possible causes: malfunction, missile explosion, debris hit, collision, friendly fire.

I Have Now Officially Spent All the Time I Plan to Spend on Graham Platner

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics

So Platner deleted his Reddit posts before announcing his run for the Senate.

Why did he delete the comments?

His excuse for what he said at the time?

Auto Draft 140

Platner’s political director resigns.

Fox “News” is drooling:

Old online posts that appear to promote violence to achieve political change have triggered new scrutiny of a rising star on the progressive left who’s running for the Senate in Maine.

Graham Platner, a U.S. Marine and Army veteran and oyster farmer who is gaining momentum in the race to take on longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, said on the social media platform Reddit in 2018 that “all” police are bastards and called himself a “communist.”

In a separate post, he argued that if people “expect to fight fascism without a good semi-automatic rifle, they ought to do some reading of history.”

And in another post, he said “an armed working class is a requirement for economic justice.”

The candidate told CNN that he does not actually hold the positions he expressed on Reddit. “I’m not a communist,” he said. “I’m not a socialist. I own a small business. I’m a Marine Corps veteran.”

From the Maine Monitor:

In Reddit posts from 2013, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner asked why Black people “don’t tip” and suggested people concerned about being raped shouldn’t be inebriated around people they don’t feel comfortable with.

Those posts, first reported on by the Bangor Daily News, add to previous coverage from CNN and Politico published Thursday about Platner’s writings on the social media site about his ideology and political violence.

The BDN obtained more posts made under Platner’s handle, “P-Hustle,” through an online database. He posted on the social media site more than 1,800 times between 2009 and 2021.

Platner’s past comments came to light the same week that Gov. Janet Mills joined the Democratic primary for the right to face Republican Sen. Susan Collins in 2026. The posts threaten to upend an out-of-nowhere campaign that has generated grassroots momentum, raising roughly $5 million and signing up thousands of volunteers.

Platner responded to a 2013 post on Reddit entitled “What is one question you have always wanted to ask someone of another race,” writing, “Why don’t black people tip?” He worked as a bartender at Tune Inn on Capitol Hill, where he was a guest bartender last month.

“I work as a bartender and it always amazes me how solid this stereotype is,” he wrote. “Every now and again a black patron will leave a 15-20% tip, but usually it [is] between 0-5%. There’s got to be a reason behind it, what is it?”

That same year, he also responded to a post about underwear designed to prevent sexual assault saying people should “take some responsibility for themselves and not get so f—-ked up they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to?”

Platner also made references to political violence in several posts. In 2018, he said in response to a thread in which someone invoked leaving the U.S. due to Trump-era immigration policies: “Fight until you get tired of fighting with words and then fight with signs, and fists, and guns if need be.”

This is what you do when you REALLY haven’t read or seen what people are asking you about.  You ask then to read you the thing they want you to comment on!  And then you answer their question!

The Democratic governor, who entered the primary race for the right to take on Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins on Tuesday, told reporters at Maine Beer Co. that she had not seen articles about the posts and had to have a reporter read examples of them aloud.

“Obviously, I would strongly disagree with those comments,” Mills said.

I can’t read the article, but here’s the headline:

Graham Platner dismisses old Reddit posts as ‘stupid joke comments’

Narrator:  Just locker room talk!

x

“I know I said stupid stuff and I’m not happy about that,” Platner said. “I know I used words that are like, things that I would never say today. But I was also very much in a place where I wasn’t really thinking through. I certainly wasn’t intending on ever running for U.S. Senate.”

He said the comments were made out of frustration and as an attempt to get a rise out of people online.

“I was just trying to find an outlet,” he added. “And I don’t know how to say this without sounding really stupid, but getting in dumb internet fights was an outlet.”

Platner:

Narrator’s take:

Don’t listen to what I said before!  Listen to what I’m saying now that I know people are listening.

I’ve seen enough.

I hope this flash in the pan has had his 15 minutes.  Anyone who donated to him should request their money back.
