Balloon Juice Hive Mind Needed

Hey everybody.

One of our long-time BP peeps has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).  Diagnosis was in February and it’s progressing quite rapidly.   No, we are not going to say who it is; if they want to let everyone know at some point, that will be totally up to them.

They are curious to know if anyone on Bj has any experience with ALS.  If you do, and you would be willing to share your experience in the comments please chime in below.  If you would prefer to communicate by email, please send email to WaterGirl.

Well, JD Didn’t Cover Himself in Glory Today, Either

by @heymistermix.com|  August 11, 20243:19 pm| 125 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

JD did most of the Sunday shows today and didn’t say much that will stick, as far as I can tell.  His interview with Dana Bash showed him dancing around topics like weird, where he said that Walz is weird because of the way he hugged his wife at the rally. The response to that is obvious:

Is this your dad? https://t.co/BQNMgqOYit https://t.co/U6X5HBdWB9

— Shannon Watts (@shannonrwatts) August 11, 2024

As you can see, JD is workshopping Walz hits with Don Jr, always a sign that the Trump campaign is going in the wrong direction. JD also said that Walz isn’t “comfortable in his own skin”. Jesus Christ, I’ve never seen a politician more comfortable with who he is than Walz. This, and the “stolen valor” of 24 years of service in the National Guard, are just non-starters. As much as the media would love to run with a “balancing” story about Walz, Trump and Vance haven’t offered up anything.

He also spent a long time saying “let’s talk about real issues” when Jonathan Karl asked him about Trumps bullshit accusation that Walz wanted to kidnap kids for gender reassignment, while basically repeating the charge, as Karl pointed out that Trump had said it at his rally in Montana.

If you want to see more, the KamalaHQ feed has a few of the “highlights”.

Part of JD’s problem is that he’ll never have an interview that isn’t derailed by the crazy shit Trump says, as Buttigieg points out:
Well, JD Didn't Cover Himself in Glory Today, Either

Meanwhile, Trump is just melting down over crowd size:

Tim Walz’s Nontoxic Masculinity

by Betty Cracker|  August 11, 20242:40 pm| 131 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Politics

As he swanned around the stage with a conspicuous bandage on his ear owwie and the unearned confidence of a rich old man who has never once earned an honest dollar nor been held accountable for anything, ever, Donald Trump’s sound track was “It’s a Man’s World.” The musical selection was fitting (even if the artist didn’t deserve the association), as Abby Vesoulis explains in Mother Jones:

It wasn’t just a catchy tune. Throughout four 14-plus hour days reporting at the Republican confab in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the music’s lyrics underscored the prevailing attitude on gender norms among the scores of GOP convention-goers I interviewed, the litany of speeches I tuned into, and the half a dozen issue-focused meetings I attended as a member of the media.

From the UNC fraternity brothers who were honored on Wednesday for preventing, in their words, “a mob” of pro-Palestinian protesters from toppling an American flag on the Chapel Hill campus to famous wrestler [Hulk Hogan Terry Gene Bollea] ripping the shirt from his chest to reveal a TRUMP-VANCE logo in a striking display of machismo, it was men—and ideas on family structure that benefit them—that took center stage.

The Republican National Convention was a unique moment in time. Trump held a steady lead in the polls, and the campaign was mostly waged on his behalf by the media. He looked supremely confident as he smugly basked in the adoration of the assembled sycophants.

Not so much now! Kamala Harris’s ascension to the top of the ticket threw the orange fart cloud (and media) off his/its game. Her pick of Tim Walz also demonstrated another path men can choose — an incarnate rejection of the Trump-Vance brand of toxic masculinity.

I have no idea if Walz will influence broader culture beyond the initial excitement, but man, I hope he does. Because there are legions of confused young men out there. An alarming number are whiny, pallid incels who look like they’ve been raised on snails and sour milk, and they appear to be highly susceptible to hate politics. Maybe they need role models who aren’t adjudicated rapists and casually misogynistic pricks.

My own father is Walz’s (and my, and my sister’s) political opposite — a two-time Dump voter who will almost certainly cast a ballot for the orange shit-stain again in November. He can be a pain in the ass. But as a human being, he’s closer to the Walz model of manhood than the Trump version, thank merciful dog.

Dad has old fashioned ideas about men and women’s roles. But he’s capable of love beyond self-love, and he wants to buy you a new set of tires because the tread on the current ones is unsafe.

My sister and I laughed over Walz’s state fair video with his daughter because Watz’s insistence that a turkey corndog was “vegetarian” reminded us of our dad. So do these online observations about Walz: [Source: WaPo]

“Tim Walz snuck a $20 in your back pocket because he’s worried you don’t have enough gas money to drive home,” read a representative social media post, one of hundreds (thousands?) of examples of the wholesome fan fiction that has sprung up since his Tuesday introduction to the national stage.

“Tim Walz beeps at you at a red light, motions for you to put your window down, and tells you that your right rear tire could use some air,” read another. Or: “Tim Walz has enough 10 mm sockets for everyone in the neighborhood.”

I don’t think Walz’s example of compassionate masculine virtue will sway Repubs like my father who live a similar creed, but just in general, it’s got to be useful to have a high-profile Democrat who comes across as such a regular guy.

The media (not just the hard-right media) relentlessly “feminizes” male Democrats (“Obambi,” Al Gore’s “earth tones,” etc.), but I don’t think that playbook will work on Walz. Good. As a nation, we need a detox.

Open thread.

Being Good Neighbors

This post is in: Open Threads

I have a twitter account, so I haven’t seen first hand what it’s like when someone posts a twitter link in the comments.

Things I did not know that happen if you click on a link if you don’t have a twitter account:

  • If the twitter link goes to a thread, it cannot be read without an account.
  • Sometimes the links take you directly to the twitter sign-up page.
  • Sometimes the links take you to a twitter page with a bunch of jumbled tweets with no rhyme or reason.

All of which are no doubt annoying as hell!

We all hail those who have given up their Washington Post or New York Times account because, well, let’s just say they have mostly turned into pieces of crap.

I know why I still check twitter, and why others do, too.  But lots of BJ peeps have dropped their twitter accounts on principle, too.

Maybe we can make BJ a better place for people who dropped their twitter accounts?  That way we can go back to annoying each other because we disagree with something that was actually said.  :-)

Some ideas for how we could be better neighbors when linking to a tweet in the comments:

  • Give us the gist of the tweet in your comment, rather than just linking to the tweet?
  • If the tweeter isn’t a universally well-known person, maybe include a little background since people can’t go to twitter and click on their info to see who the hell someone is.  (“well-respected in the black community”  “head of the state party in NC”  “this bozo writes for the Bulwark”)
  • If it’s a thread, maybe include a direct link to one of the tweets, not just a link to the thread?

I bet the people who don’t have twitter accounts can supply more than just those three ideas, so jump in, please!  Especially if i haven’t done a great job of articulating your frustrations.

P.S.  Anybody besides me interested in being better neighbors to our non-twitter BJ peeps?

Update:

More ideas from commenters:

  • Copy the body of the thing you’re linking too, put it in a quote block, and describe why you think it is relevant that someone should go follow a link to a fascist vanity site?

Personal News: Medical Update

by Betty Cracker|  August 11, 202412:09 pm| 83 Comments

This post is in: Fuck Cancer, Open Threads

First, I want to thank y’all for making routine threads a place where I can join in discussions about politics, pets, hot dishes, etc., without being asked about my health. I know inquiries come from a place of caring, and I’m grateful for that. But it’s so nice to have a place where I can be normal, you know? Real life is far from normal these days, so I value that a great deal.

That said, I’ve been meaning to update y’all on how my treatment is going in this specially designated portion of the blog. The good news is I’m almost done with lengthy courses of chemo and radiation. The bad news is it’s exhausting and nauseating, and I can’t wait for it to be over.

Thanks to the generosity of this community, Bill was able to take a leave from work to shuttle me to appointments and look after me during the worst of it, which includes the past few weeks and the next couple upcoming. I’m a reasonably strong person and figured I could tough it out while he worked, but I was wrong. I don’t know how I would have made it through this shit without him!

In addition to feeling poisoned all the time, I’m shedding like an equatorial golden retriever. But so far, I still have a full head of hair. I’ve lost volume but not coverage. I’ve also lost a ton of weight. Before I got sick, I knew I needed to drop a few pounds, so I’m not displeased with this development. But I would not recommend this type of fat farm to anyone, including the convicted felon.

So, to focus on the positive, I’ll be done with treatment within the next couple of weeks, and I’m hoping when they stop pumping poison into my veins and irradiating me, the side effects will go away. Then we’ll see where we are and what’s next. Hoping you all are enjoying great health or getting the treatment you need if not. Thanks again for the support — and the space to forget my troubles for a minute.

Sunday Morning Open Thread: TFG Campaign Claims It Was Hacked

by Anne Laurie|  August 11, 20248:13 am| 207 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Republicans in Disarray!, Trumpery

NEWS: Trump’s campaign says it has been hacked
The acknowledgment came after POLITICO began receiving emails from an anonymous account with documents from inside Trump’s operation, including a dossier on JD Vancehttps://t.co/Cqh1TJWPl0

— Alex Isenstadt (@politicoalex) August 10, 2024

If it actually happened — I’m agnostic, given the Trump campaign’s standard of veracity — my bet would be divided between a disgruntled staffer looking to shine up their resume in advance of an expected November firing, and some desperate jeenyus inside the Mar-A-Largo mafia hoping for a Behold the violence inherent in the system! sympathy bump. Which they just might garner from the sniffier members of Our Failed Serious Media… but not so much, I’m thinking, from the rest of us.

And just in time for the Sunday shows!
…

The campaign is suggesting Iran was to blame. POLITICO has not independently verified the identity of the hacker or their motivationhttps://t.co/Cqh1TJWPl0

— Alex Isenstadt (@politicoalex) August 10, 2024

The Washington Post‘s more skeptical report – “Trump campaign says it is victim of foreign hack after leak of Vance report” [gift link]:

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign said on Saturday that it has been the victim of a foreign hack, after the campaign received questions from news organizations about a lengthy vetting document on vice-presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) sent to the outlets.

“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” Steven Cheung, a campaign spokesman, said in a statement.

Cheung pointed to a report released Friday by Microsoft in which the company said it had discovered evidence that Iranian hackers had tried to break into the email account of a “high-ranking official” on a U.S. presidential campaign in June.

The company did not publicly identify the campaign or confirm whether it believed the hack had been successful. A person familiar with Microsoft’s work confirmed that the report’s reference was to the Trump campaign…

People familiar with the matter said the campaign separately concluded earlier this summer its email system had been breached but did not disclose it publicly or to law enforcement. The people said some officials were told to take more protective measures on their email accounts. At the time, campaign officials communicated to others that they weren’t sure who hacked the emails. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the internal matter…

On Thursday, The Washington Post was also sent a 271-page document about Vance from a sender who called himself Robert and used an AOL email account. Dated Feb. 23 and labeled “privileged & confidential,” the document highlighted potential political vulnerabilities for the first-term senator. Two people familiar with the document confirmed it was authentic and was commissioned by the campaign from Brand Woodward, a law firm that represents a number of prominent Trump advisers in investigations by state and federal authorities.

The document drew from publicly available information, including past news reports and interviews with the senator. The campaign commissioned several reports of other candidates, too, the advisers said…

When media decided to report on the Hillary and the DNC hacks, it’s wasn’t done with sober consideration of the public interest. It was a gleeful spectacle for so many in the industry. Now contrast that with the “very serious situation” when Trump gets hacked, and, well…

— ??Dante Atkins?? (@DanteAtkins) August 10, 2024

So why isn’t POLITICO publishing these documents in full? Political reporters were tweeting out screenshots of emails from John Podesta’s account and the DNC. https://t.co/qNco8fHoRs pic.twitter.com/JymjGpO46r

— Matt Ortega (@MattOrtega) August 10, 2024

This is key. If the Times et al plan to cover hacked Trump emails differently from hacked Clinton emails, fine. But then they owe the public a detailed mea culpa for their conduct in 2016, including transparency over how and when they decided they were wrong. https://t.co/CHygn85qVE

— Brian Beutler (@brianbeutler) August 11, 2024

Not many people know this, but Politico was sold to an Uber right wing billionaire who has previously asked his executives to pray for a Trump win.

The hackers definitely picked a friendly publication to send their hacked information. pic.twitter.com/Hor0BEaZIq

— KerrBear 🪷 (@MPLSKerrBear) August 10, 2024

That’s why nobody with a brain believes this is real.

A hacker with malign intent isn’t leaking genuinely damaging information to a magazine whose owner ordered his employees to pray for Trump’s reelection in 2020.

— Phoenix Woman 🍩🪷 (@PhoenixWomanMN) August 10, 2024

So Politico has been sitting on a JD Vance dossier since late July and has not published it…

Would they do the same if it was a dossier on a Democratic candidate? pic.twitter.com/pPtGRfdDfG

This is wrong. I’m all for Harris and want Trump to lose. But what Trump’s OWN team is doing to him crosses all lines.
