We still have time to mess this up!

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Giving up is unforgivable.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

A sampling of the news from my RSS reader this morning.

No Holiday from the News

I’m not sure I can bear to read any of them, but I am loving the titles.

What’s everyone up to on Labor Day?

I have hours of work to do this morning, then  some friends are coming over this afternoon to play cards and drink sour cherry mojitos.

Betty Cracker posted this image last week, and I love it so much. Perfection.

Photo of a smiling Melania Trump with a shovel. Caption reads “I make grave for husband now.”

Open thread, obviously.

Blast From the Past: Duke Cunningham Has Died

by Anne Laurie|  September 1, 20254:02 am| 14 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Republican Politics, Republican Venality, Lock Him Up...Lock Them All Up

What a headline from the San Diego Union-Tribune:
"Duke Cunningham, war hero turned corrupt congressman, dies at 83"
Old heads will remember the 2006 special election in #CA50 to replace Cunningham after he resigned

— The Downballot (@the-downballot.com) August 29, 2025 at 12:18 PM

Us old heads remember Duke whenever our Very Serious Media Pundits claim that the current Oval Office Occupant represents a tawdry betrayal of established GOP norms. Per Trip Gabriel at the NYTimes, “Duke Cunningham, 83, Congressman Convicted in Corruption Scandal, Dies” [gift link]:

Former Representative Duke Cunningham, an ace fighter pilot elected to Congress from San Diego whose combat heroics in Vietnam were forever marred by a bribery scandal that sent him to federal prison, died on Wednesday in Little Rock, Ark. He was 83.

His death, in a hospital, was announced on social media by his family. No cause was cited.

One of only two Navy aviators in the Vietnam era to be confirmed an ace for shooting down five enemy planes, Mr. Cunningham, whose given name was Randall, was recruited by Republican Party activists to run for Congress in 1990. He was re-elected repeatedly and sat on the powerful Appropriations and Intelligence committees, where he abused his power to win favors for military contractors in exchange for at least $2.4 million in cash, gifts and benefits.

He pleaded guilty in federal court in 2005 to tax evasion and conspiracy to commit bribery. Among the favors he accepted from defense contractors were a Rolls-Royce, free rent on a live-aboard yacht, the Duke-Stir, moored on the Potomac River, and a sweetheart sale of his San Diego County home for nearly $1 million above market value.

The San Diego Union-Tribune exposed the corruption beginning in June 2005, revealing that a defense contractor bought Mr. Cunningham’s house for $1.675 million, then sold it at a $700,000 loss. Shortly after, the contractor began winning millions of dollars in defense and intelligence-related deals from the government. The newspaper’s coverage won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting, which it shared with its sister organization, the Copley News Service.

Mr. Cunningham was sentenced to more than eight years in prison, one of the longest sentences handed to a former congressman for corruption. He was released in 2013. President Trump pardoned him just before the end of his first term in January 2021…

show full post on front page

In his 15 years in office, Mr. Cunningham was outspoken on partisan politics and an opponent of gay rights. He once said that Democratic leaders in the House should be “lined up and shot.” Speaking on the House floor, he used a slur to refer to gay soldiers in the military and crudely insulted Barney Frank, the openly gay congressman from Massachusetts. (He subsequently apologized for both comments.)

Mr. Cunningham also called for stiff penalties, up to the death penalty, for drug dealers. When his son, Randall Todd Cunningham, was charged with smuggling 400 pounds of marijuana, the congressman tearfully pleaded for leniency before a Boston judge. His son was sentenced to two and a half years…

After the initial news report in 2005 that Mr. Cunningham had sold his house two years earlier to a defense contractor, Mitchell J. Wade, and then used the inflated proceeds to buy a bigger, more expensive home, the F.B.I. opened an investigation. Both men’s homes were raided by agents.

Another military contractor, Brent Wilkes, gave more than $630,000 in cash directly or indirectly to Mr. Cunningham, according to the congressman’s plea agreement, in exchange for Mr. Cunningham’s help in landing millions of dollars in federal business.

In addition to the large cash sums the contractors gave Mr. Cunningham, they issued many smaller payments to cover a lavish lifestyle, including $7,200 to an antiques store for a Louis Phillipe-period commode and four armoires, $7,500 for his fees at the Capital Yacht Club, and $2,000 for one of his daughters’ graduation party.

Many of the bribes were paid to Mr. Cunningham’s company, Top Gun Enterprises.

Yes:

The police version of the crash, as relayed by a local Manchester reporter, is unsurprisingly quite different from what Giuliani's spokesman says. The whole thing is even more murky now, however.

— Helen Kennedy (@helenkennedy.bsky.social) August 31, 2025 at 5:57 PM

This sounds to me like the simplest explanation: It was a mundane traffic accident, until the Giuliani genius for unnecessary elaboration came into play. Per the Manchester InkLink:

show full post on front page

… Police say that just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, Troopers assigned to the Troop B barracks were investigating a reported domestic violence incident on Interstate 93 southbound in Manchester when a two-vehicle crash occurred across from them on the northbound side of the interstate. As a result of the collision, both vehicles went into the median and were heavily damaged.

Troopers and fire personnel, who were at the scene of the first incident, witnessed the collision and quickly crossed the interstate to render aid.

The on-scene investigation determined that a Honda HR-V, driven by Lauren Kemp, 19, of Concord, struck the back of a Ford Bronco, driven by Theodore Goodman, of Michigan. Kemp and Goodman, as well as Giuliani, Goodman’s passenger, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment.

Lanes on both sides of the interstate were closed for approximately one hour while the crash was investigated….

Ted is Rudy’s longtime comms guy/body man

— Anna Bower (@annabower.bsky.social) August 31, 2025 at 6:03 PM

No reason why Giuliani shouldn’t have been returning to NYC from New Hampshire during a holiday weekend (certainly not enough, on its own, to call in Maggie Haberman). There are enough ‘independents’ (libertarians) up there to host a festive gathering, or a ‘conclave’ with a fat honorarium. Getting t-boned by a teenager while both cars are rubbernecking a police stop in the next lane would be mildly embarrassing, but hardly media-worthy, except…

The only thing I have to say about this Rudy Giuliani story is that he was disabarred for aggressively and constantly lying about Trump winning the 2020 election

The Only One Who Wants This War Is Russia – That Is Why We Will Keep Up the Pressure – Address by the President

31 August 2025 – 20:32

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

A brief update for today. There were reports from the military on the situation at the front. First and foremost, about the Donetsk direction – Pokrovsk and other key sectors. We are holding our positions, and what matters most is that this is active defense – we are destroying the occupier every single day. I thank each of our units for their resilience and precision. We are also working to ensure that our army is fully supplied with everything necessary for the autumn. There will be meetings, engagement with our partners – we are planning a very active diplomatic week.

Two weeks ago in Washington, it was stated that by this time the Russians should be ready for real negotiations – a meeting at the leaders’ level. Ukraine is definitely ready for this. But the only thing Russia is doing is investing further in war. All their signals point to that. Now, during his visit to China, Putin will once again try to wriggle out. That is his number one sport. Everyone in the world has declared that there must be a ceasefire. Everyone has insisted that the war must end. That has been the position of everyone, including China. I have discussed this with the Prime Minister of India. Also with other leaders who are now at the summit – Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan. Almost everyone else in the world also supports ending the war. Today, there was an important statement from the Pope – I am grateful for that. The only one who wants this war is Russia. That is why we will keep up the pressure – it is Russia that must be pressured. We expect that no one will tolerate the prolongation of this war. We count on a strong stance from the United States, Europe, and the G20 countries. This war brings nothing but destabilization to global processes. Russia must pay for this. And it will.

I also want to thank the partners today who have joined the PURL initiative this month – our special program that allows us to purchase the necessary weapons for Ukraine’s Defense Forces in the United States. In August, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Belgium, and Latvia joined this initiative. The program already exceeds two billion dollars. Coordination is carried out through NATO. I am grateful to everyone involved, and this is a good result for August. September must also deliver accordingly. Our goal is no less than one billion dollars in the program every month. These funds are used to purchase very effective weapons – Patriot and HIMARS missiles, and weapons systems needed to defend our cities. Thank you once again to our partners!

And one more thing. Of course, throughout the day there were reports from Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko and Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Maliuk on the investigation into the murder of Andriy Parubiy. They reported on the progress of the investigation and are working through all the circumstances. All necessary forces are involved – the police, the Security Service, the prosecutor’s office. They are working virtually around the clock. I thank everyone who is helping with the investigation. We hope for results.

Glory to Ukraine!

Georgia:

Until the end!” – my favourite chant.

Day 277 of #GeorgiaProtests

People expect an intense autumn.

Like I'm okay with he's an 80 year old and is tired and.maybe the bruise is bad on his hand or something.
But I'm gonna get real curious if he still is avoiding cameras after the labor day weekend

leaving aside if Trump's dead or having any health problems this weekend, if, IF the on-line rumor mill was going even half as hard about Joe Biden at any point, you would have had mainstream media coverage and talking heads saying how it shows the public is worried about his age etc

I think they'd swear in Vance immediately if he were dead-dead, but if he's just mostly dead they've got a bunch of stocks to short before they pull the plug on him.

the thing about making every minute of your presidency a reality show about you is that people notice when you don’t show up for multiple episodes

This post is in: John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House", Open Threads

Been busy the past 48, so I have been checking the headlines to see what I missed. Fucking hell:

It is once again that time of year when self-proclaimed “Burners” retreat to the dust-coated landscape that is Black Rock City, Nevada, to take copious amounts of drugs and barter for threesomes under the guise of “community building.” So what fresh hell hath Burning Man 2025 wrought? It’s not disgraced Thinx co-founder Miki Agrawal handing out her breast milk for iced lattes. It’s also not Paris Hilton’s 2017 super-“sick,” four-hour-long DJ set. And nice try, but no, it’s definitely not Ivanka Trump reading Playa Fire faster than romantasy girlies lap up A Court of Thorns and Roses. This year, I regret to inform you that Burning Man’s 22-year-old Orgy Dome has perished.

I asked the miscreants and sick bastards on bluesky to come up with a more disgusting phrase than “Burning Man Orgy Dome” and someone immediately responded “Burning Man Orgy Dome & Cafeteria” and I dry-heaved.

Can we call it ethnic cleansing now?

A postwar plan for Gaza circulating within the Trump administration, modeled on President Donald Trump’s vow to “take over” the enclave, would turn it into a trusteeship administered by the United States for at least 10 years while it is transformed into a gleaming tourism resort and high-tech manufacturing and technology hub.

The 38-page prospectus seen by The Washington Post envisions at least a temporary relocation of all of Gaza’s more than 2 million population, either through what it calls “voluntary” departures to another country or into restricted, secured zones inside the enclave during reconstruction.

Those who own land would be offered a digital token by the trust in exchange for rights to redevelop their property, to be used to finance a new life elsewhere or eventually redeemed for an apartment in one of six to eight new “AI-powered, smart cities” to be built in Gaza. Each Palestinian who chooses to leave would be given a $5,000 cash payment and subsidies to cover four years of rent elsewhere, as well as a year of food.

These are just the grossest and dumbest people ever and should this ever come to fruition, I guarantee this will be the destination of choice for every suicide bomber in the world.

Thoughts and prayers:

Rudolph W. Giuliani was injured in a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday evening and taken to a hospital with a fractured vertebra, according to the head of security for the former mayor of New York City and lawyer for President Trump. A person close to Mr. Giuliani said he was expected to recover.

Mr. Giuliani, 81, was traveling on a highway after having stopped to help a “woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident,” Michael Ragusa, Mr. Giuliani’s security official, said in a social media post. He did not offer additional information about the incident, including where in New Hampshire it occurred or whether Mr. Giuliani was behind the wheel. Mr. Giuliani called 911 and waited with the woman until help arrived, Mr. Ragusa said.

Keep praying, folks, we’re so close to them being answered.

I had to hit the grocery today, and the prices of produce are soaring. We are rapidly approaching the point where going to the grocery store and buying fresh vegetable heavy meals with a cheap protein are more expensive than prepared bullshit like a frozen pizza. We may all be living in financially induced grocery deserts quite soon.

There’s a whole lot of shit going on out there- trumps tariffs being found unlawful, judges having to force the ice brownshirts to deplave a planeload of fucking kids they were shipping to Guatemala, Trump ruining thirty years of Indian diplomacy demanding Mohdi nominate him for a peace prize, and on and on.

Just to much stupid and evil out there. But there is still good- like what you all did yesterday raising funds for Ukraine.
