I seriously wish I could put into the words the temptation I was experiencing when I took this picture:
If I didn’t live alone and wasn’t afraid of bleeding out before 911 responded, I would have done it.

From commentor La Caterina:
Our 50+ cat colony in the Brooklyn Navy Yard mostly survived the storm, but many of their feeding stations were destroyed, and we lost a fair amount of stored food. We are afraid some of the missing cats were poisoned by toxic spills, but we are hopeful they will reappear soon. It’s been a tough year for the colony — we’ve trapped, neutered and returned at least 15 kittens produced by intact cats that slipped into the population. Due to raccoon activity we can only feed a day’s worth of food at a time — that means visiting each of the 8 feeding stations every day.
One of our primary caretakers is out of commission because her family lost their home in Staten Island to flooding. Another rescuer in Staten Island who helps us with holding and post-surgery recovery has extensive damage and has evacuated. For the last three years we’ve purchased all the food and supplies for the colony ourselves, with occasional donations from friends. We’re asking for donations now to replace our feeders, restock food, build some new feeding platforms and shelters and to set up a nonprofit (Waterfront Cats) so that we can solicit corporate donations and grants in the future.
We’re inviting NYC cat lovers to join us this Saturday at the Navy Yard for a post-Sandy clean up. Wear warm sturdy clothes and work boots or waders. We can provide transportation by car for a few volunteers each from Manhattan, Brooklyn and possibly Queens.
E-mail Suprina at Suprina11 (at) verizon.net or Caterina at cisobe (at) bsls.org
La Caterina has a PayPal account now. If you would like to make a donation, send me an email at AnneLaurie (at) Verizon.net (or click on my name in the right-hand column) and I’ll send you her Paypal address.

I’ve got a snail-mail address for Suprina, and I’ve asked Caterina for a PayPal address for donations. Will re-post with further information tomorrow, but I wanted to give anyone in the area a chance to plan for Saturday…

I found a young calico living in my garage. She was dirty and thin but otherwise in good health and very friendly. Vet says she is negative for FeLV and not pregnant. They found that she had previously been spayed. She is spending the night at North Laurel Animal Hospital to be bathed and have some ticks and ear mites removed.
I have a high-prey-drive greyhound and cannot bring her into the house. I’ve contacted the no-kills in the area and no one has room.
When we pick her up, she will be up to date on all routine shots and tests. We bought a cat carrier yesterday, so we are willing to transport her. She is in North Laurel Maryland, in southernmost Howard County.
The techs at the vet office have named her Samantha….
Anybody want a cat? : )
If you have a lead for a home for Samantha — even a no-kill shelter or foster home that could hold her — leave a comment, or send me an email (click on my name in the right-hand column) and I’ll put you in touch with Tommy.

Update from commentor Freemark:
Natasha’s doing well. My vet said its better to wait until she’s 6 months old before spaying, but it’s set up. She passed her physical no internal parasites and FIV negative. She was underweight and had ear mites but both those things are being taken care of. I included a pic of the doc checking her out. No she isn’t choking her :).
Natasha is using her litter box only if I put it where she wants, and she wants a place that I have to contort to reach. I’ll be using WereBear’s advice to get that sorted out, I hope.
Make sure everyone has my and Natasha’s thanks. Her and my new life wouldn’t have happened without them.
p.s. Haven’t gotten her to play yet, but I’ll work on that too.

And Suprina writes that Sunshine has her forever home:
we found sunshine a purrrfect home with a retired couple who has no other animals, and her 2 lovely kittens were adopted together by a great woman who will love them forever!
Thanks for all your help with this — because of you these things happen!!!
One little life at a time… you guys are the best.
