Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Republicans in disarray!

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Liz Cheney to run for Wyoming’s US House seat. She’s expected to announce it Monday https://t.co/UXtxPt46Ml pic.twitter.com/TZU4C3Arkh

— Talking Points Memo (@TPM) January 31, 2016

The entire Cheney family should be kept out of any and all positions of power above that of Home Owners Association busybody.

Wyoming will not elect a Democratic representative, so the question is if and then how does a liberal blog play there to further the commonweal?

I am thinking of a Balloon Juice Super-PAC designed to troll the Republican primary base in Wyomoning. It would run ads saying that Liberal Boogeyman with San Fransisco or New York or Detroit values really looks forward to working with Ms. Cheney as she represents DC Values very well….

My wife has said that I can’t start that Super-PAC, but is anyone interested in a large scale trolling operation with an actual budget?

LITERALLY EVERYONE ON FOX NEWS IS ARGUING THAT OBAMA'S RELEASE OF U.S. PRISONERS ACTUALLY INCREASES TERROR THREAT TO AMERICA

Maybe it’s just that I have a miserable cold, but it really does feel like the entire Republican party is trying to re-litigate Iran-contra — not to mention Jerry Falwell’s “Moral Majority” and all the rest of the Reaganauts’ creepy, eliminationist policies at home and abroad. I’m too old to fight all these battles a second time, dammit!

Remember when Republicans made secret & illegal prisoner-release deals w Iran, a bunch of people were convicted, & GHW Bush pardoned them?

Because of the SSL issues referenced in the last post, I can’t post links properly, but I wanted to state for the record that this article (Debate Offers Jeb Bush a Chance to Take the Family Gloves Off: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/15/us/politics/republican-debate-jeb-bush.html) reaches some kind of apotheosis of the Grey Lady’s inability to call things by their proper names:

… The Republican debate on Tuesday in Las Vegas provides Mr. Bush with a highly anticipated platform to forcefully take on his rivals. After faltering in a previous debate exchange with Senator Marco Rubio, Mr. Bush — perhaps more than anyone else onstage — might be compelled to prove he has the strength and passion not just to lead the nation, but to hold his own in the aggressive Colosseum of modern politics.

That could be tricky for a man whose family code is one of polite gentility and even bipartisanship, not angry yelling and boorishness.

That hardball, in-the-trenches style of politics, said friends, aides and scholars of the three men, goes against the ethos of the blue-blooded dynasty with roots in New England, where manners and decorum were ingrained not just at the dinner table but in the halls and playing fields of Andover.

“Even the most visceral of the Bushes, George W. Bush, has been averse to that kind of pugnation,” said Robert Draper, the author of “Dead Certain: The Presidency of George W. Bush.” “The charitable view of it is manners — it’s better not to flash anger and swing elbows. The less charitable view is it derives from a kind of superiority that Bushes don’t fight in alleys.”

Ron Kaufman, who served in the first President Bush’s administration and is a longtime friend of the family, said Jeb Bush in particular was more of a serious-minded policy aficionado than a political fighter…

Even for a dedicated professional coatholder like Ron Kaufman, that is a lot of bullshit to cram into one sentence.

Open Thread: “Whisper Campaigns and Zipper Problems”

by Anne Laurie|  November 30, 20158:37 pm| 29 Comments

This post is in: Election 2016, JEB! = John Ellis Not-Bush 2016, Open Threads, Republicans in Disarray!, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

Interesting story from McKay Coppins, at Buzzfeed, on Jeb Bush’s (so far futile) attempts to crush Marco Rubio in advance of the 2016 campaign.

TL; DR (IMO) — First, if thoroughly middle-of-the-road journos like Coppins are willing to attach names to narratives like this, then JEB! is TOAST! (at least in 2016).

And second, the “well known” rumors that Rubio’s financial problems relate to funding his “second secret family” are no more than that. If Marco did have one or more off-registry kids to support, some enterprising fellow Repub would’ve gotten the data out by now. He’s just no good at managing his money, like so many of the rest of us.

… [B]eneath the glossy exterior of his public profile — that of the compassionate conservative, the happy warrior, the good-natured reformer — Jeb possessed a hard-edged, often ruthless political style that ran through his entire rise and reign in the Sunshine State. “He’s been the big, bad kid,” Chris Smith, a leading Democrat in the Florida House, complained to a reporter toward the end of Jeb’s term. “And he’s wielded that power mercilessly.”

It wasn’t until Rubio dazzled a roomful of donors at the Koch brothers summit in Rancho Mirage that Jeb and his tight-knit 2016 team decided the young senator needed to be neutralized. For their new mission, they adopted a code name: “Homeland Security.” Few of Jeb’s lieutenants believed they would need to subject Rubio to too much browbeating in order to sideline him, and their commander agreed. All he needed was a gentle reminder of his place in the pecking order. And so the word went out to Jeb’s army of foot soldiers: Carry the message…

Meanwhile, Jeb’s ever-expanding political operation made a big show of its fundraising supremacy, particularly in Florida. At an event hosted by his political action committee in Tallahassee, his team branded the donors like cattle, with large red stickers exclaiming “Jeb!” — and then they invited reporters into the formerly private meeting so they could ooh and ahh and tweet about the impressive herd of millionaires…

…[T]he Bush brigade had Florida on full, threat-level-red lockdown, and with the exception of a few loyal backers, Rubio wasn’t getting anywhere in his home state. Meanwhile, as they tried fundraising outside of Florida, they began to notice a curious pattern among the Republican donors who were turning them down. Many of them seemed to like Rubio’s ideas and message, but when they explained their doubts about his 2016 prospects, they often used the same vague, coded language: concerns about the wealth of “oppo” that could drag him down, or the “talk coming out of Tallahassee,” or the importance of nominating a “fully vetted” candidate. This, of course, was nothing new for Rubio. But it seemed oddly top of mind all of a sudden in certain quarters of the GOP money world.

Eventually, word got back to the senator’s camp that Jeb’s close allies in Florida were working to revive the “zipper problem” meme in a last-ditch effort to freeze Rubio out of the race; they were circulating the rumors anew among donors and politicos and cautioning them to exercise due diligence before signing on with his campaign…

Still, most in the Rubio camp had trouble believing that Jeb would personally green-light such a brazen campaign of character assassination against someone who he had, just four years earlier, joyously introduced to the world while choking back tears (or at least pretending to). But one of the privileges of being Prince Jeb was his ability to give an order and then step back in blissful ignorance as a team of duty-bound lieutenants plotted, and strategized, and worked out all the gritty details that entailed “carrying the message.”…

Nice folks, those Bushes. Nature’s aristocrats!

Karl Rove has opened his Rolodex for Ben Carson https://t.co/CrC3zfLfGF pic.twitter.com/Y8Na9tvUeq

— Bloomberg Politics (@bpolitics) November 28, 2015

Bad news for Dr. Carson. There’s been previous speculation as to whether the candidate was, to put it delicately, in the hands of “professionals” whose first priorities might not be identical to his own interests. Last month, the Atlantic asked, “Where Is Ben Carson’s Money Going?“:

Ben Carson is raising a ton of money. He hauled in an impressive $20.8 million in the third quarter, shocking the political world and topping the Republican field in fundraising. That comes after a strong second quarter, when he raised more than $10 million.

But Carson is also spending a ton of money—he spent nearly seven out of every $10 he raised in the quarter. What is that money being used to do, and is that rate of spending sustainable?…

In Carson’s case, a majority of what he’s raising is being plowed right back into fundraising costs—$11.2 million of the nearly $20.8 million. That means 54 cents out of every dollar Carson raises is going to raise more money…

Many strategists say direct mail is an important part of a diversified strategy. Other operatives, though, when discussing the Carson campaign, use words like “grifters” or “unconscionable.” They complain that Carson’s fundraisers appear to be reaping small-dollar donations from atypical donors and true believers while doing little with that money to build the infrastructure to win the nomination. For the majority of analysts who still consider Carson a very long shot to win the nomination, anyway, there appears to be no big downside for the candidate. But what about the earnest folks writing the checks?…

They’re suckers with money, is what — a scent which inevitably attracts the big-money scammers, per Bloomberg Politics:

Republican strategist Karl Rove helped set up a meeting between top fundraisers for Ben Carson and casino mogul Steve Wynn.

Rove confirmed to Bloomberg Politics that he acted as the go-between for the Carson camp and Wynn, a sometimes business competitor of Donald Trump, the rival Carson has been batting all fall for the Republican nomination…

The mastermind of George W. Bush’s presidential victories in 2000 and 2004, Rove has not signed on with any of the presidential candidates this year, though he says he has dispensed advice to a number who have asked. Trump’s camp is viewing the effort to help the billionaire real estate mogul’s chief rival as an attack on the front-runner…

Rove’s role in setting up the meeting between Wynn and Carson advisers raised some eyebrows within Carson’s political orbit, with some advisers questioning Rove’s intentions, said one source familiar with the meeting and the campaign.

The source said they were skeptical that Rove was only acting to inflate Carson in an effort to ultimately take out Trump. “Karl Rove isn’t just going just to help Ben Carson out of the goodness of his heart,” the source said…

Yeah, the Carson handlers get Rove’s somewhat outdated ‘rolodex’ — and Rove gets the Carson mailing list of fresh marks. Rove hasn’t exactly been front and center on the publicity trail since his Election Night 2012 public meltdown. Come to think, that’s something he and Donald Trump share: having been made to look stupid, on air, by Megyn Kelly.

Today’s Episode Of “Stick A Fork In Him, He’s Done”

by Tom Levenson|  November 10, 20152:19 pm| 127 Comments

This post is in: Election 2016, JEB! = John Ellis Not-Bush 2016, Clown Shoes, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

Via Martin Longman writing at Washington Monthly, this by Michael Bender and Ben Brody over at Bloomberg:

In Alabama, one of the Bush campaign’s top targets in March, Bush has endorsements from a member of Congress, a handful of state legislators and statewide officials. Yet, in contrast with Donald Trump or Marco Rubio, Bush wasn’t able to find a full slate of delegates to run on the ballot by Friday’s deadline.

DUYSTER,_Willem_Cornelisz_-_Carnival_Clowns

As Longman notes,

This obviously undermines Jeb’s main arguments for his own candidacy. He’s supposed to be competent and experienced. His team is supposed to know what it is doing and have a shot at matching the team the Clintons will bring to the general election contest. He’s supposed to have enough establishment support and resources to not have to worry about things like ballot access that can be a real challenge to cash-strapped and little-known candidates.

The whole Bloomberg piece is worth a read.  The TL:DR version is that while the Bush folks can talk a plausible game about a targeted strategy aimed at amassing delegates (which sounds on superficial reading like an echo of the Obama 2008 mastery of the caucus/primary mix, but isn’t), life on the ground looks very different, and thoroughly unpromising for Team Exclamation Point.

That said, the clown car is full of clowns, so who knows which GOP jester will actually get to 1237 delegates.  I don’t — but a while back I was willing to bet lunch money against Jeb.  I’d lay more now.  Quite a bit, in fact, were I a gambling man.

ETA: I do so love the Juice Commentariat.  For the record:  I used the term “stick a fork in him” because I thought the Secret Service might frown on a suggestion to stick a shiv in someone. Though that would certainly settle the question of whether he or she were done. [PS — Secret Service?  This is a JOKE!  Maybe a crappy one, but mine own.]
