Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The words do not have to be perfect.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Accountability, motherfuckers.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

The lights are all blinking red.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

People are weird.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Cold Grey Dawn Open Thread: Trump’s Only Skill Set Is Lying

Candidate Trump promised to lower grocery prices, but now it seems he isn't even going to try.

While champagne corks pop at Mar-a-Lago, President-elect Trump says that he can't really lower grocery prices because it's "very hard."

Sad. It’s the start of a broken promise.

"I won on groceries."

Mainstream media never asked for specifics on 𝙝𝙤𝙬 Dump planned to lower grocery prices.

He said he would do it, and they took it at face value, despite his record of lies.

The media failed voters. pic.twitter.com/Or0L5N1A9V

Trump is, at heart, a small businessman, not some kind of corporate titan.

He sees every dollar he pays as theft from him and every dollar he makes as a scam perpetrated against his sucker customers. And so he reviews trade the same way https://t.co/xTdB2fuwyp

Late Night Interlude Open Thread: Smirnov Lied. So Did, and Will, Jim Comer

BREAKING: A former FBI informant pleaded guilty to lying about a phony bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. https://t.co/lcbHf5HY1k

— The Associated Press (@AP) December 16, 2024

This story has been (temporarily) overwhelmed by the Great Budget Bullsh*t Kabuki, but I’m sure Jim ‘Second Time As Farce’ Comer is keeping his oversight gavel warm. So, getting it on the record: The whole ‘Burisma paid off Hunter and probably Joe Biden’ story was based on lies from an actual, breathing, self-identified Russian asset. And Comer’s Crew was either too dumb to pick that up, or too eager to impeach President Biden not to leap at the lies like a pig at a truffle…

A former FBI informant pleaded guilty on Monday to lying about a phony bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden and his son Hunter that became central to the Republican impeachment inquiry in Congress.

Alexander Smirnov entered his plea to a felony charge in connection with the bogus story, along with a tax evasion charge stemming from a separate indictment accusing him of concealing millions of dollars of income…

Smirnov will get credit for the time he has served since his February arrest on charges that he told his FBI handler that executives from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma had paid President Biden and Hunter Biden $5 million each around 2015.

Smirnov had been an informant for more than a decade when he made the explosive allegations about the Bidens in June 2020, after “expressing bias” about Joe Biden as a presidential candidate, prosecutors said.

But Smirnov had only routine business dealings with Burisma starting in 2017, according to court documents. An FBI field office investigated the allegations and recommended the case be closed in August 2020, according to charging documents.

No evidence has emerged that Joe Biden acted corruptly or accepted bribes as president or in his previous office as vice president.

Quick housekeeping note. After two days of feeling better and feeling as if I was back on the mend, this evening I feel munky funky again. Nowhere near as bad as last week, but I’m just going to run through some of the basics tonight so I can rack out.

Russia unloaded on Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast and Kryvyi Rih, but I’m going to put those below the jump. The pics are blurred, but this way they’re not sitting on the front page.

Putin gave one of his annual marathon speeches today. President Zelenskyy had some thoughts.

Doumbass isn’t covering it. He is indeed a Dovboyob (Zelenskyy calls putin that in a Ukrainian version of his post).

That is not quiet correct “Довбойоб” isn’t Dumbass
There is no English analog, but it’s closer to fucking moron, fucktard or dumbfuck lol.
What i like most about this, is that Zelenskyy took away putins news headlines with a word that also translates into russian 😅

President Zelenskyy addressed the European Council today.

The only political thing I have to add to what everyone else has said about the current shitshow is that this is the baseline for what you should expect. It will be stupid, pointless, loud, and hurt people who get caught in the crossfire, as we watch a bunch of tone deaf and self serving billionaires trip over each other while looting. It’s going to be every bit as dumb as the last 36 hours.

In other news, Joelle is much better today. She is walking more confidently and with less pain, and seems to have shaken off the dazed/confused/shocked aspect from the trauma of the surgery. So that’s good.

Dad is well, too.

Trump has sewn himself into a sack with Elon Musk

I love this sentence from Josh Marshall.

Trump has sewn himself into a sack with Elon Musk, a few billion dollars, a cat and a snake, and had the sack tossed into the Tiber. That’s the story here. And it will go on for a while.

Here’s a challenge to all you BJ peeps – to come up with a summary of the situation that rivals that one.  Josh Marshall used fewer than 40 words – you guys have 50 words to spend, if you want.

Ready, set, go!

Afternoon Update

Based on a Punchbowl News post on Twitter, the Guardian is reporting that the Republicans have agreed to avert a shutdown.   I’m doubtful, and I think the Post has a more realistic take:

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has a new proposal to avert a government shutdown, which would extend federal spending for three months and suspend the debt limit for two years in a bid to satisfy President-elect Donald Trump, adviser Elon Musk and the rowdy House GOP conference, according to three people familiar with the proposal who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a plan that’s not yet official. The proposal is on shaky ground: It’s unclear whether Republicans will embrace the plan in high enough numbers to force it through the House, and Democrats may not support it, either. The government will shut down this weekend if a bill is not passed.

That’s the entire piece and it’s their liveblog so hard to link.  Anyway, as I noted in the earlier post, this will still require a supermajority and Democrats need to sign on.  The need to have a “scoop” about the inevitable cave on the shutdown is driving some not-so-great journalism.  In particular, Jeffries has said he’s a “hard no” on the debt ceiling increase.

I went out to run some errands and saw a bunch of Amazon drivers delivering, as usual, so I wondered exactly which Amazon drivers are on strike.  Here’s the list from the Teamsters:

Workers will join the picket line from DBK4 in New York City; DGT8 in Atlanta; DFX4, DAX5, and DAX8 in Southern California; DCK6 in San Francisco; and DIL7 in Skokie, Ill. Amazon Teamsters at other facilities are prepared to join them.

Teamsters local unions are also putting up primary picket lines at hundreds of Amazon Fulfillment Centers nationwide. Amazon warehouse workers and drivers without collective bargaining agreements have the legal right to honor these picket lines by withholding their labor.

I will point out that one of these things is not like the other.  The Teamsters knew that striking around Christmas was a way to get some attention.  President Musk didn’t realize that he was touching a hot stove when he ordered the shutdown right before Christmas.

This abominable snowman cookie needs work!

Terrible attempt at an abominable snowman cookie.Next time I’ll start with a base of white icing (would have done today but didn’t have any ready made) and add shredded coconut for the fur.

Drunken Aunties Cookie Night is tomorrow. I’ll try to post about it live, but it’s an unpredictable event.

As mentioned in a previous comment, I’m gonna try to avoid a hideous faux pas like I committed last year when I mistook a teen cookie decorator’s Frida Kahlo gingerbread for Paddington Bear.

Various crappily decorated cookies.

In my defense, Ginger Frida was wearing a Paddington blue frock, and she lacked the iconic uni-brow. I’m not psychic, man!

Open thread.

PS: There’s a splendid Belted Kingfisher hunting in our lagoon, diving into the water about 40 feet from where I’m sitting. So cool! Will try to get a pic.
