Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans do not trust women.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Let me file that under fuck it.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

The National Guard is not Batman.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Katie Lies – You Can See It in Her Eyes

Katie Lies - You Can See It in Her Eyes 1

Katie Britt has arisen from deep, prayerful reflection on her disaster of a SOTU response to double down on the lie that she didn’t lie about the sexual abuse she called out (the account of the abuse she heard was real, but the abuse itself happened in Mexico during the GWB administration, not during the Biden administration, something she was at a minimum crystal unclear about).  I thought the Guardian headline captured it well: Katie Britt defends sex trafficking story she falsely links to Biden presidency.

Anyway, yeah, nobody’s buying her bullshit excuses except perhaps her fellow evangelicals, and why is that?  I think it’s because lying is so baked into their game that they expect it, tolerate it, and find comfort in it.  Their church experience is full of lies, and I’m not talking about  the belief in some benevolent sky prince as described in their fairytale bible.  Rather, it’s the other shit that they swallow all day.  “We love everyone” except  trans and gay folks, and sluts who use birth control and/or have abortions.  (Of course, they use birth control and have abortions, in the closet, just as many of them are gay or bi, in the closet.)  “We live chaste, virtuous lives” except for their clergy, who are forever being found sticking their dicks in kids and women who aren’t their wives.  “We tithe for the greater good” which includes lining the pockets of their leadership.  They are also brought up to seek coded messages in the main text of their faith, since that’s the only way to make sense of a bunch of disjointed rambling assembled over hundreds of years from disparate sources.

I think there are a fair number of evangelicals who live their faith and won’t vote for Trump, but for every one of them, there are ten who find him a familiar, comforting presence.  He’s a leader who molests women and is notoriously unfaithful to his wives (just like their preachers).  He rips off his followers, fucks them over with scammy shit like golden sneakers and generally treats them as marks, just as they are treated in their megachurches.  He’s full of coded messages and wink-wink, again, something they hear every day.  It’s no mystery why these people flock to Trump, when you take a clear-eyed look at what happens in their churches.

I believe that what I’ve expressed here is pretty much commonly acknowledged truth about a lot of evangelicals, but because they have “beliefs”, the media (which they despise and would destroy the minute they’re in power) treats them with kid gloves.  These fuckers have burrowed themselves far too deeply into our society already, and we need to start seeing them as the threat they are.  They’re un-American because they would burn the Constitution as soon as they’re in power, they’re un-Christian, in the sense of following the teachings of Christ, and they are a god damned menace to civil society with their church school ignorance and anti-vaxxism.  Katie did us all a service with her Stepford wife performance (more on that from Cheryl Rofer, well worth reading).  She reminded us that she, and her kind, are the enemy, and it’s good to remember that.

War for Ukraine Day 746: A Brief Sunday Night Update

by Adam L Silverman|  March 10, 20246:06 pm| 19 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Just a quick housekeeping note. Last week was very busy and I have two more – this and the one after – just like it. So updates may be briefer as I just touch the basics and important breaking news.

Last night in comments Wombat Probability Cloud asked:

Adam, you may have addressed this already, but if not can you comment on whether interdiction of Iranian munitions is possible and the potential blowback? If “we” (UKA/US/NATO) could pull that off, who would they cry to?

The answer is yes and probably not. Anything that Iran ships via ship is something we could interdict. Provided we have the resources available to do so. Anything that Iran sends overland by rail or truck or by air is much, much harder. Provided the land routes are through states that are either friendly towards Iran, Russia, or both, we would have almost no ability to stop the shipments. Anything in the air would require us to force down an Iranian or Russian cargo plane. We’re not going to do that.

West of the Rockies asked:

“Russia is using social media” as a weapon against the West.  Is the West doing the same in return?  If not, why not?  If so, can anyone point to any publicly known examples?

NATO has a Strategic Communication Center of Excellence (COE). Their 2016 report on Russian information warfare was linked to last night in the Foreign Policy piece I copied and pasted.

What’s America doing? This:

U.S. Cyber Command saw an opportunity to strike a blow in the meme wars last October — just in time for Halloween.

The command had identified two new pieces of Russian malware and was looking for a way to publicize the threat. A hoped-for bonus: Cyber Command wanted to land a sick burn on Russian hackers.

But according to internal communications obtained by the nonprofit open government organization MuckRock through the Freedom of Information Act, Cyber Command took more than three weeks to design and fine-tune the meme before posting it — an eternity in the fleeting world of online feuding.

And though Cyber Command intended to create something to wound Russian hackers’ egos and cause “their boss to … [lose] their s*** on them” after seeing it, as an unidentified official told CyberScoop last year, what they posted was significantly less savage: A bumbling cartoon bear trick-or-treating in stereotypical Soviet get-up, tripping over itself and spilling candy labeled with Russian malware such as ComRAT and X-Agent.

Peter Singer, a senior fellow at the think tank New America and expert on cybersecurity and cyberwar, told Military.com on Thursday that the episode shows the government is starting to take some necessary steps forward, but still has a long way to go “in the new battle of ‘likes’ that actually have real-world impact.”

Most notably, Singer said, the government needs to move a lot faster if it hopes to keep up in the fast-moving world of online discourse.

Here’s the meme:

And here’s the link to the FOIAed After Action Report (AAR). I’m sure there’s other stuff going on. I wouldn’t expect much.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

The voice of the modern ‘sensible’ Republican, folks: We’ll get in line like good little toadies, but trust us — we’ll cheat on Dear Leader like we cheat on everything else!

(I rag on the ‘Live Free or Die Equivocating’ state… and NH leaders like the Sununu clan make it damned easy.)

April 2022 – Chris Sununu on Trump: “he’s fucking crazy”

Jan 2024; “If you go with the Trump path, obviously, it just gets — it's like throwing gasoline on a firework. It's just going to get so much worse.”

February 2024 – “Assholes come and go.”

Today: endorses Trump

The notion he is/was a moderate was always a media fantasy.

He’s a fucking ski resort manager who doesn’t believe in climate change. You know have much of an asshole you have to be to have that combo of beliefs? https://t.co/H0wF8jdWk8

BREAKING

NH GOP Governor Chris Sununu, a Trump critic, says he’ll vote for Donald Trump in November: “I’m going to support Donald Trump. But my focus is definitely going to be here in the state.”

There's a nihilism in this that is disturbing but also predictable when you're swaddled in a certain type of privilege that comes from having a father and brother who were also involved in national politics and nothing Trump could do in a 2d term affects you personally. https://t.co/9ZilPgvalf

I’m not surprised that Chris Sununu is supporting Donald Trump. That’s why I’m glad he was called out by Sunny last year on #TheView. pic.twitter.com/OT4M69OhRN

D.W. Brooks – Here’s To More Chaos

Here’s To More Chaos

by D.W. Brooks

Hello, hello!

I want to thank WaterGirl for hosting this opportunity for me on Balloon Juice. I would also express my thank yous to all the Balloon Juice commentariat. I have been a lurker on this site since President Obama was only a twinkle in the nation’s eye. (nym: MomDoc) Here’s to 2024!

Becoming a writer was my original career choice. I was a big reader; fortunately, the library had limits on both the number of books and the number of books by one author in place or I might have checked out all the Nancy Drew or Agatha Christie books at once. While I enjoyed reading these books, there weren’t many characters that looked like me and my cousins in them and besides, at the grand old ages of eight and nine, we could likely write just as well, if not better, right? The arrogance of youth…

My cousins and I set out to write our own series of mystery novels. One cousin was in charge of the covers and illustrations, one was creating maps of neighborhoods and towns for our characters, and I was mainly in charge of writing the stories. We folded and stapled sheets of that dot matrix computer paper together to create “books” and we worked from there. Of course, with little plotting, the actual writing stalled out around halfway through. And given the attention spans of the participants, the entire project was pushed to the side for other interests. Within two years, I was chasing my MD dream and spent the next 16 years focused on becoming a physician.

But by the end, people started doubting how long I would continue practicing medicine. Earning my MBA, while interesting, did not lead me into health administration as I planned, and I shifted into medical writing. I worked as a freelance medical writer/consultant until my genetic kidney condition got worse in the early 2010s. I spent a lot of time sitting or lying in bed, but I hated wasting the time, so I found something I could do: Voila, I started writing again!

This was a true labor of love as I had several stops and starts—during my transplant recovery period and my caring for my father in our home (2017-2020), I didn’t write or edit at all. The pandemic pushed me into finally making a stand; I finally got this book published in November 2023.

Official Synopsis

A dead body in the parking lot of her family’s business, a killer on the loose, and a handsome detective asking a lot of questions…

Jamie Scott’s life fell apart four years ago when she broke off her engagement, turned down a dream job, and went overseas to run away from her life. Now she’s back, but the reunion is not without problems. She arrives home just in time to attend the soiree her mother planned, but she’s not prepared for what she finds—a dead employee in the parking lot.

Detective Nick Marshall is assigned to the murder case at the forensics lab owned by Jamie’s family. He meets the headstrong Jamie, but he has a job to do. And his attraction to her… well, he’s a professional.

Jamie knows the stakes are high. She has to face the past and save her parents’ business while dealing with her family drama and an uncertain future. She also has to deal with Nick, who wants her out of the way of his investigation. But fate keeps throwing them in one another’s paths… and into chaos that they both want to avoid, but neither can seem to escape.

Prequel

I wrote a prequel novella that takes place four years before the events in Homecoming Chaos. It’s called I Do CHAOS and is currently available for free on my website: Author D. W. Brooks. I do plan to move it to Kindle in a month or two, but you can grab it now if you wish.

So, now that I am an adult, what do I write about? I still love mysteries, but I have added some romantic suspense—basically a murder mystery with some romance in it. There is often snark (Thanks, Balloon Juice!) and family drama intertwined as well. I don’t plan to write books that will change the world. I want my readers to disappear for a few hours into someone else’s adventure.

Next up: Two novellas and one novel in 2024!

Editorial Review

D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

The blend of romance, intrigue, and family ties is well done. Brooks creates a compelling series of chaotic encounters in which disparate characters harboring their own special interests and prejudices grow from their mistakes as well as their successes.

At stake in Jamie’s decision-making process are the family business, the outcome of a murder investigation, a hot detective’s ability to love her, and a future that is determined not by past chaos, but present-day growth.

Brooks focuses on characters that evolve through desperation and surprising circumstances which test their moral and ethical mettle as well as their abilities to evolve and change. This creates an attraction that nicely supplements the investigative tone of the story, providing draw for readers who look for more than a murder mystery or romance alone.

Reader Reviews

There are several reader reviews on GoodReads and Amazon but my reviewer friends insist that we authors link to their reviews and not paste them willy-nilly on the Internet. I just do as I am told…

Biography

The author is a doctor and editor who lives in Texas with her husband and children. She enjoys trying to stay in shape, sporadically cooking, reading (still), writing, and working on her blog. She is eternally grateful to the woman who donated a kidney to her over 5 years ago and continues to advocate for organ donation as much as she can.

My first thought on reading about this.  Holy shit, Pennsylvania!

Under my plan, Pennsylvania families who make up to $70,000 will pay no more than $1,000 in tuition and fees per semester at state-owned universities and community colleges.

$1,000.

That’s how we make higher ed accessible and affordable.

— Governor Josh Shapiro (@GovernorShapiro) March 9, 2024

So here’s my question to PA peeps.  Is this a pie-in-the-sky thing that Gov. Shapiro is saying he’d like to do – in the state equivalent of the State of the Union?  Or is he actually trying to make this happen?

If Republicans had to take a vote on this, and vote against it, could this proposal provide an opportunity for Dems to get a majority in both chambers in PA in November?  Or is that totally out of reach?

Also, totally unrelated.  Holy cow-ski, did everyone see this great news?  $Endorsements all around – Latino, Asian American, black communities – and $30 million dollars.

This is HUGE: The Latino Victory Fund, AAPI Victory Fund, AND Collective PAC—the largest groups representing the Latino, Asian American & Black communities—have announced they are endorsing President Biden & VP Harris & investing $30 million to mobilize those voters. Amazing news

— Victor Shi (@Victorshi2020) March 9, 2024

Also unrelated.  All over the thread last night in the comments, but so great that it deserves the front page.

Sunday Morning Open Thread: President Joe Biden, Happy Warrior

This post is in: Open Threads, President Biden, Proud to Be A Democrat

— Clean Observer (@Hammbear2024) March 8, 2024

Good luck with Daylight Savings Time, especially to those of us who do *not* celebrate its advent.

I watched all the footage of what Biden did *after* the State of the Union address, when he wouldn't leave the building because he wanted to talk to literally anyone and everyone, and it is (mostly) hilarious. https://t.co/OsqjAkAa4h

— Jennifer Bendery (@jbendery) March 8, 2024

Let the man have his well-earned reward! Jennifer Bendery, at HuffPo, says “At 81, Joe Biden Is Still The Last Guy To Leave The Party”:

… Just seconds after stepping down from the dais in the House chamber, as most news networks pulled their cameras away, Biden was playfully saluting people in the audience and shouting out jokes…

The House chamber was packed with so many of his old friends, former colleagues, his judicial and executive appointments, and even critics who wanted to talk to him. And Biden, all smiles, was here for it. He spent the next half an hour talking to anyone in earshot, taking selfies, telling stories and weighing in on climate change, Ukraine, Vladimir Putin, border security, reproductive rights and whatever other policy topics people threw his way.

HuffPost caught most of these details by watching bits of livestreams that were still going and hearing him on hot mics.

“Thank you for mentioning climate change,” said Rep. Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), the first person to get to Biden when he stepped into the crowd.

“That’s why I’m working so hard,” Biden replied, referencing Democrats taking back the House. “I’m going to do whatever I can.”

“You were the Baptist preacher tonight!” chimed in Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.).

Biden leaned in and started telling a story about someone in “Del-a-WARRR,” or Delaware, who offered to campaign for him but only in certain places, because “in some places you’ll help, in some places you’ll hurt.” Meeks and others laughed at the end.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was near the front, eager to shake his hand. So was Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), an actual Baptist preacher.

“That was a sermon tonight!” he told the president.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat 117

From commentor JeffG166:

2.16.2024

Will be snowed on tonight.

======

From commentor Delphinium:

Much like last year, we have had a less snowy winter overall here (Central NY) along with warmer than normal temperatures. While less shoveling is always good, the changing weather patterns make it increasingly difficult to plan garden beds, especially given that any snow that does fall tends not to stick around long like it used to.

Since my own garden is still mostly in the winter die off stage, wanted to instead share some prettier pictures from around my area (except for the dogwood which is from my yard).
