Times of Israel – U.S. Military Emergency Mission to Build Pier Off the Coast of Gaza

This post is in: Biden Administration in Action, Foreign Policy, Open Threads, Politics

Such welcome news!

According to the live blog on the Times of Israel: the US military will build a temporary pier off Gaza coast that will allow for maritime delivery of aid!

President Biden is the living embodiment of what Nancy Pelosi said in this clip about passing health care reform in 2010.  The whole clip is  only 1.5 minutes, but the money quote starts one minute in at 1:05.

Cutting to the chase.  Biden Administration:

We’re not waiting on the Israelis. This is a moment for American leadership, and we are building a coalition of countries to address this urgent need.

.

US President Joe Biden will announce in his State of the Union address tonight that he has directed the US military to embark on an emergency mission to establish a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza that will allow for the direct delivery of humanitarian assistance from the Mediterranean Sea, senior administration officials tell reporters on a briefing call.

The idea for a marine humanitarian corridor into Gaza has been floated for years, but never got off the ground due to Israeli reticence and concerns that the existing Gaza City fishing port isn’t equipped for docking large ships. The US made a renewed push for the corridor establishment following last week’s deadly mass-casualty incident where dozens of Palestinians were killed trying to collect aid in northern Gaza.

Believing that the best way to ensure civilians receive aid is by flooding the strip with assistance by land, air and sea, the US has airdropped food over Gaza three times since Saturday, and will over the coming weeks begin work to establish a causeway facility off the coast of Gaza that will be able to receive large ships carrying hundreds of truckloads of food, water, medicine and temporary shelters each day, according to the administration officials.

The US is coordinating with Israel to ensure its security concerns are met and with the UN and humanitarian organizations on the ground in order to ensure that the aid is properly distributed.

Initial shipments will arrive to the port via Cyprus’s Larnaca Port, where they will ostensibly undergo security inspections.

It will take “a number of weeks” to get the temporary pier built and running, one of the officials briefing reporters said, adding that the US hopes that the port will turn into “a commercially operated facility over time.”

The officials clarified that the project will not require US boots on the ground in Gaza. Instead, US military personnel will be present on vessels offshore while the pier is being built.

“We’re not waiting on the Israelis. This is a moment for American leadership, and we are building a coalition of countries to address this urgent need,” one of the senior officials says.

I wrote this yesterday but held it because of the state of the union.  I still think this is worth front-paging.  Do take a minute to watch Nancy Pelosi!

Friday Morning Open Thread: President Joe Hit *All* the Bases

When your base is ecstatic, the media is floored and the usual suspects are pissed off and busy trying to parse your speech, you had a good night.

I could do a dozen aggregating posts like this, and I suspect I won’t be the only front-pager posting about last night…

Q: Did President Biden meet the moment?

Speaker Emerita Pelosi: Definitely, it was spectacular. He did it with vigor, vision, and patriotism. It was one of the finest State of the Union addresses I've seen pic.twitter.com/gD6pc3WKoD

President Biden: On January 6th, insurrectionists placed a dagger at the throat of American democracy. America stood strong, democracy prevailed. While Trump seeks to bury the truth, I will not. Here’s the simplest truth, you can’t be pro-insurrection and pro-America pic.twitter.com/XwlHrS3AIc

Grim Dawn Open Thread: Another Angle on GOP’s Katie Britt ‘Rebuttal’

by Anne Laurie|  March 8, 20246:47 am| 178 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Republicans in Disarray!, Schadenfreude

Imagine you're sleeping over at a friend's house and you get up in the middle of the night to pee and you hear a weird sound so you follow it to the kitchen, where your friend's mom is drunk, crying, and rambling about the national debt.

Those are the vibes from Katie Britt rn.

— Julia Ioffe (@juliaioffe) March 8, 2024

The modern SOTU rebuttal is generally an opportunity to take a putative GOP rising star and make them into a punch line. so yeah.

— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) March 8, 2024

okay, not sure we're going to be hearing a lot more from her

— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) March 8, 2024

Some hours before Britt’s State of the Union ‘rebuttal’, Puck‘s journamalistic botfly Tara Palmeri posted “Mar-a-Lago V.P. Soul-Searching”:

Among the first to arrive at Mar-a-Lago on Super Tuesday was Marjorie Taylor Greene, dressed in all black, at 4:30 p.m., when there were still just a handful of other people in the gilded ballroom. Within hours, of course, the royal court of Donald Trump had filled with red-hatted men and bleached blond women in sequins and leopard prints, who cheered as Trump pulled off a sweep (sans Vermont), essentially securing his coronation as the G.O.P.’s 2024 standard-bearer…

Greene then enumerated the reasons why rising star Katie Britt—the youngest Republican woman ever elected to the Senate, charged with delivering the rebuttal to Biden’s State of the Union address—isn’t MAGA enough to be Trump’s vice president. “Katie Britt, she’s a fairly new senator,” she told me, citing Britt’s underwhelming Heritage Action score (81) from memory. “Not as strong of a conservative as the base would like to see.” Perhaps there was another candidate Greene had in mind? “Of course, I’ll serve in any role that President Trump asks me to,” she said.

Trump himself spent most of the evening out on the patio, away from the applause and well-wishers, buttonholing high-dollar donors to help ease his financial troubles: a $41 million cash disadvantage relative to Biden and the D.N.C.; a deluge of campaign ads from well-funded Democratic groups; his tens of millions of dollars in legal fees, and hundreds of millions more in civil penalties. (Between the $83.3 million due to E. Jean Carroll for defamation, and $355 million plus interest owed to the state of New York, he’s on the hook for nearly half a billion dollars.) Perhaps that’s why the former president didn’t seem jubilant, exactly, when he sauntered onto the stage to deliver another “American Carnage”-style speech…

So while Greene seems to think that Trump will select his vice president based on their appeal to MAGA voters, the emerging consensus among campaign insiders is that his choice will come down to who can perform best with wealthy donors—the Republican constituency that still needs the most convincing before getting comfortable with another four years of Trump.

On The Road – way2blue – Rarotonga, Cook Islands [2 of 2]

I love to snorkel—so after colleague cautioned years ago now that coral reefs were in serious decline—I explore tropical reefs whenever I can.  The Cook Islands are fairly remote, midway between Tonga & Samoa to the west and Tahiti to the east, thus somewhat protected from catastrophic ocean warming.  As with most (all?) of the South Pacific island chains, Rarotonga’s volcanic interior formed over a mantle hotspot.  Persistent mantle plumes form series of seafloor volcanos as a consequence of the Pacific oceanic plate moving northward toward the Aleutian Islands that subside below the sea surface with time (same as the Hawaiian Island chain).

We joined two excursions on Rarotonga.  The ‘culture night’ one was recommended by the Maori staff where we were staying.  Words & photos can’t do it justice.  We first walked to an ancient sacred platform of stones and our host/MC sketched the history of his ‘tribe’.  He is a descendent of the first wife of the last tribal chief (who had four wives till the missionaries showed up and told him he could only have one).  This highland tribe was always feuding with the tribe across the valley.  The warriors took part in ritual cannibalism, meant to both humiliate the dead foe and also to capture his spirit.

Is it just me, or is Katie Britt giving a world-historically terrible SOTU response? This is Bobby Jindal-level bad.

This post is in: John Cole Presents "Stories from the Road", John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

It was rainy and cold by Tempe standards so I had to break out the overalls for the day. People loved the tie-due overalls and I just said “They’re great for painting” and showed the paint on my hands from my current project and they all said “Oh yeah” and realized they are great for painting because who gives a fuck if you got a splotch of paint on your tie dye? At any rate, I got the trim done so tomorrow the ceiling and then the second coat on the walls and the edging and then painting the closet. Then all I have to do is replace all the sockets, hang the curtains, and the dog room/sun room will be complete. YAY.

Normally I just do the trim first, then the ceiling, then the walls, but I am painting yellow over white so I knew it was going to need two coats, so I did the bulk of the walls, then the trim, then I will do the ceiling and another coat on the walls. If that makes sense. It made sense to me. So that is why I did it. Joelle was giving me a suggestion that didn’t make sense, and I just blurted out “you had fifteen years here to do that, now you’re just gonna sit back and let me do it my way.” I’m still an asshole at heart.

I dunno if I have ever talked about it, but my dad was a teacher at a state college in WV for decades, and I don’t know if you know anything about teacher salaries in the 70’s and 80’s at small schools, but they were not great. They sucked, in fact. Mom and dad went to college for a combined almost 20 years and their combined salaries were substantially less than all the union guys mining coal or working at the steel mill. And don’t think I think those guys were overpaid. Hardly. I watch them gimping around to this day, broken bodies and all, enjoying their retirement. And they fucking earned it.

At any rate, teacher salaries sucked, so dad supplemented their incomes by basically being a handyman- painting, drywalling, wallpapering- he was very good at it. And I had to “help” him a lot, although I am sure my help as a young pre-teen to teen consisted mainly of me being the most obnoxious cunt on the planet the entire time I was there and occasionally being useful for brief, fleeting moments with the frequency of Halley’s Comet.

Halley’s comment. Everyone my age knows about that, but I bet very few people under the age of 45 do.

Back to my point- he did a lot of that, I was there for a lot of it, and I basically learned how to do it without planning to or for that matter wanting to. I am glad I did. During the summers when I was in undergrad, and the bars I was a doorman at didn’t need me because no students, and the clothing store didn’t have many hours for me and I was not at national guard, I would work construction/renovation. I did roofing, a lot of painting, a bunch of drywall, etc. Don’t do plumbing or electricity and don’t fuck with them in the least- that’s a quick way to create a major bill. Those guys are pro and you hire folks to do that shit.

I don’t do tile, either. That shit is HARD and a real skill. Not that the other things are not. I am sure a pro would look at me doing this shit right now and just shake their head. But I know enough of painting and drywall that I can do a passable job.

All of this was a very long-winded way of saying that while doing this it is funny how many things I have started to do and had an “oh yeah that’s how you do it” memories come flooding back, fighting their way through who knows how much drink and drug to make it to the surface and be remembered.

***

Had another trip down memory lane today when I saw that Erick Erickson was promoted to primetime slots on Cox Media Group. The same Erick Erickson who wanted to throw political opponents from helicopters ala Pinochet and who once said he was going to shoot a postal worker. Among who knows how many other awful things he has said and done. And it made me think about how cancel culture really works. And the way it works is there’s always money for assholes who fluff the billionaires.

Remember Ward Churchill? I don’t even remember what his point was or what he was talking about so this is by no means an endorsement, but that’s how cancel culture works for liberals. You get shitcanned and memory holed. Be a Nazi and you get promoted.

***

You will be pleased to know that the young lady across the street and introduced herself and apologized for parking where she did, and we had a nice chat. I told her there was no reason to apologize, I was not mad, I was just worried we were going to hit her car (it’s a Mercedes). I could give a shit about my paid off 2013 CRV, it can take a little dented bumper, builds character. Look at the fucker driving it.

Long story short she was very pleasant, got home late last night form work and didn’t even pay attention, and I told her that if she has a hard time finding a parking space, just park in our driveway behind Joelle’s car because she never drives. At least there she’s not gonna get backed into by two old fuckers with thick glasses.

So that was nice.

Speaking of Joelle, she’s had a rough one because her best friend’s brother died unexpectedly in his sleep. I knew him, nice fellow, about 3-4 years younger than me. Went to bed and never woke up. Joelle was friends with him and is doubly upset as she lost a friend, but also because her other friend is distraught. So that kinda sucks. I’ve been through that recently.

That’s it from me. Very good piece by Dan Froomkin on why the NYT sucks so much.
