Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

Let there be snark.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Friday Evening Open Thread: Commemorative!

Trump just announced he is moving the inauguration indoors because it’s going to be cold outside.

— Brian Tyler Cohen (@briantylercohen.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 12:58 PM

Trump moved the inauguration inside because he didn’t want to be humiliated by the visuals of a nearly empty mall.

— Dana Houle (@danahoule.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 1:30 PM

To be honest, if I worked for him I’d have recommended it move inside, unless I had good reason to suggest a big crowd would show up despite the cold. But they probably expected, based on ticket requests, that people weren’t showing up regardless of the weather.

— Dana Houle (@danahoule.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 1:48 PM

He’s moving the inauguration indoors bc it’s too cold and he wants to invade Greenland? It’s a damn ice sheet!

— George Takei (@georgetakei.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 6:39 PM

Congressional offices have been instructed to call inauguration ticket holders and inform them their Mall tickets are now “commemorative”
I’m sure that’s going over super well.

— Kristin Wilson (@kristin-wilson.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 5:06 PM

For Obama’s first inaugural 240,000 tickets were issued, most of which were distributed through Congressional offices.

— Dana Houle (@danahoule.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 5:54 PM

I bet it isn’t very many calls
If the info isn’t already public some enterprising reporter should try to figure out how many tickets were issued & compare that number to recent inaugurations. I assume Trump’s team moved it inside to avoid humiliation from a pathetic turnout/optics

Remember, social media peeps: Sharing is caring!

With President-elect Trump moving his inauguration indoors, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies has announced that the majority of ticketed guests will not be able to attend the ceremonies in person.

— Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (@repjasmine.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 4:50 PM

The inauguration will reportedly be moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to cold temperatures.
Trump is returning to the scene of the crime for his inauguration. How fitting.

— PatriotTakes 🇺🇸 (@patriottakes.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 11:46 AM

Trump moved his inauguration indoors because he claims temperatures may reach "severe record lows," with temperatures in the 20s (those temps are nowhere near record lows).
Other presidents have held inaugurations outdoors with temperatures in the 20s, including FDR, Jimmy Carter, JFK, and Obama.

— Brian Tyler Cohen (@briantylercohen.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 4:18 PM

Delicious 🤣🍿…MAGA morons already in DC are upset with dear leader for moving the inauguration indoors because of the cold

— WuTangIsForTheChildren (@wutangforchildren.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 7:01 PM

Those of us who couldn’t feel our toes until Valentine’s Day after the jam-packed, joyous inauguration of President Obama, suspect this move indoors may be driven more by the prediction of a relatively thin crowd, rather than the cold.

— @SIfill (@sifill.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 5:33 PM

Since Trump’s inauguration is moving indoors the crowd size should be very easy to calculate…

— Dan Przygoda (@dprzygoda.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 12:12 PM

Trump to billionaires: I don't want you to feel cold, so I am moving the whole inauguration indoors.
Trump to his devoted Iowan followers: Come and caucus for me in subzero temps, even if you are sick, and if you pass away "it will be worth it."

— Ruth Ben-Ghiat (@ruthbenghiat.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 2:39 PM

With Trump’s 2024 inauguration moving indoors, his 2016 inauguration will remain the largest one any President has lied about.

— Missing The Point (@missingthept.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 4:56 PM

So now that the inauguration is going indoors, all that corporate money going to the inaugural fund can be refunded I guess, nice

— David Dayen (@ddayen.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 1:06 PM

live your life in such a way that the entire world doesn't burst out laughing when your pathetic little inauguration gets moved indoors

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

I had to drive to Tampa this morning for a doctor’s appointment. Afterward, I met a friend for lunch at a Cuban diner that’s been a favorite since childhood (La Teresita on Columbus).

Good food, plenty of it and cheap! Usually you can only pick two of those things. We also visited the affiliated market across the street so I could get some proper Cuban bread, which isn’t available in my town.

My friend brought a birthday present in case she doesn’t see me again before my actual birthday (late February — Pisces queen here). Virginia Woolf socks!

Socks with a cartoon Virginia Woolf

The tagline above VW says, “We march on.” I promised not to collect rocks and march into the river.  (It was a joke! My friend has a dark sense of humor too, so she got it.)

The news from my doctor was 100% positive — my response to treatment has been exactly what they hoped to see. I’ve also lucked out in a big way from new protocols and technologies emerging that may actually save my ass yet, so that’s good.

Other than that, I got nothing. Open thread!

I listened to a couple of (new to me) podcasts in the gym today and thought they were both good:

Boom! Lawyered is from the Rewire News Group, and hosted by Imani Gandy (Angry Black Lady) and Jessica Mason Pieklo.  This week’s episode was on the possible PornHub ban.  What I’ve always liked about ABL is that she’s a lawyer who understands power politics, lawfare or whatever other term you want to use for the intersection of law and politics.  So, she and her co-host examined the vagueness of the Texas law at issue here, and the possibility that it will be used to shield “the children” from things like sex education, as well as from porn.

Greg Sargent’s new-ish podcast is called “The Daily Blast” and his episode interviewing Paul Krugman was good.  Since there was some discussion of the Laken Riley bill in the comments, here’s his take on that horrible piece of legislation.

Of course, the Josh Marshall podcast is another must-listen in my book, and the Progress Pondcast with Martin Longman and Brendan Skwire is also a good listen.  (That’s a Spotify link for the Pondcast, but it’s available on all the platforms.)

If you have recommendations, please put them in the comments.  Also, Kay mentioned that she’s enjoying the content aimed at normie Dems at TikTok and mentioned Hope Walz and Michelle Obama.  If you have recommendations for that platform, let’s hear them.  I think TikTok is going to be around for at least the weekend, but probably much longer.

(Thanks for Betty for reminding me to post about Rose’s Books of All Time podcast.  My wife and I recently listened to the Aesop’s Fables episode which was quite good.)

Got to the gym later than usual this morning, and who did I see but South Dakota ex-Governor Kristi Noem, Trump’s nominee for Homeland Security, testifying at her confirmation hearing.

I don’t think many tears were shed over the loss of Kristi by (certainly) South Dakota Democrats and even a fair number of Republicans.  She was a always angling for attention on right wing media, building a TV studio at taxpayer expense so she could do more TV hits, trying to get her faildaughter a real-estate appraisers license even though daughter Kassidy couldn’t pass certification, and insisting on having fireworks shows at Mount Rushmore despite fire danger, so she could bring Trump into the state for a big show.

Kristi is a show horse not a work horse, so my question, as with the other shitty Trump nominees, is who the other political appointees are going to be at Homeland Security, since they’ll be the ones in charge of pushing that gigantic bureaucracy to do what Daddy wants.  In the case of ICE, however, she’s going to find some very willing allies for the supposed mass deportation that’s coming.

Anyway, Kristi is pretty lucky that Trump’s other nominees are a crazy anti-vaxxer, and an (alleged) rapist, in addition to being incompetent.  She’s just incompetent, so she’ll get through without any major issues.

Three Things to Remember for Next Time (If There is One)

This post is in: Open Threads

Trump is going into office instead of prison because of one bad hire, and he’ll have two popular things to brag about because of another bad hire and a bad decision.

Let’s start with Normy McNormerson and his slavish devotion to the norms surrounding the rule of law.  This is from Garland’s farewell address:

We must understand that there is a difference between what we can do — and what we should do.

That is where our norms come in.

[…]

Our norms are a promise to treat like cases alike — that we will not have one rule for the powerful and another for the powerless, one rule for friends and another for foes.  [ed: LMFAO with tears in my eyes.] […]

Those norms include our commitment to guaranteeing the independence of the Justice Department from both the White House and the Congress concerning law enforcement investigations and prosecutions.

“Norms” occurs ten times in that speech.  This is like the Captain of the Titanic giving a farewell address on the bridge after the collision, explaining that the White Star line must always be on time, he was right to go as fast as possible through a sea full of icebergs, and that the ocean isn’t as cold as it looks.

Second, Trump is going to take credit for the ceasefire in Gaza and he’s going to spin it as Bibi being scared that Trump will actually do something, unlike Biden.  I’m sorry to report that that explanation will be well-received, because Bibi sure showed that he wasn’t scared of Biden, as this ProPublica piece shows:

  • Empty Threats: Since Oct. 7, 2023, Biden has repeatedly issued threats that Israel ignored. U.S. officials tried to enforce consequences — but they couldn’t.
  • Internal Dissent: The State Department disregarded its own experts and cracked down on leaks. Some human rights officials said they were prevented from pursuing evidence of Israeli abuses.
  • Costs of Inaction: Experts say Biden’s failure to follow through led to impunity for widespread human rights abuses, including blocking aid deliveries, even after explicit U.S. warnings.

Blinken was another bad hire, though this one might be more on Biden, and he’s certainly getting the blame.

Finally, here’s the thing that’s really going to get Trump some good press:  he’s going to stop the TikTok ban and work out some deal to “sell” TikTok’s owner to a US company.  Let’s remember who wanted that ban:  174 Democrats and 186 Republicans in the House, including Pelosi, Jeffries and some other local heroes.  Of course the Progressive caucus and a few other House members with brains (e.g., Andy Kim) got it right, as usual, and opposed it.  Then, in the Senate, only Voldemort, Merkley and Welch opposed it from the Democratic side.  Yesterday, Schumer went to the floor to beg for an extension of the ban he voted for.  (That link goes to a press release from Senate Democrats, insert mordant chuckle here)  And even though the ban should happen on Sunday, Biden says he won’t enforce the ban he signed.  As he shouldn’t, because if you’re going to ban foreign influence from social media companies, you need to look at US companies, too, but we won’t, because money.  (John Oliver has a good, evenhanded overview of the TikTok stuff that ends up with that conclusion.)

My view of losing is that you need to figure out what went wrong and not do it again.  Hiring a DC insider for AG who didn’t get the job done, looking like Bibi Netanyahu led you around on a leash, and supporting a dumb ban of a service that is very popular with younger voters (who should be our voters) are three big mistakes.  The first led to Trump even being eligible to run.  The second gives Trump a “win” that he’ll be happy to claim as he and Bibi hold each other in multiple warm, loving embraces.  And, yeah, Trump supported the third (TikTok ban), but just like Chuck Schumer, he sees that it’s unpopular now, so he’ll be more than happy to do exactly what Schumer is doing, which is to reverse his bad decision, and do something that will be very popular.

These are three things we need to sear into our minds and demand better from the next set of Dems who ask for our vote, if elections still exist in 2026 and beyond.

Monday's Inauguration Day is set to be the coldest in 40 years. The high temperature for the day is projected to be around freezing at 23 degrees, while the low for the day may drop to just 10 degrees.

I've thought a lot about this. I usually want to witness history.
But there is nothing in Trump's inauguration that will help me to understand anything. He is a felon and insurrectionist. He will damage the country. Watching him swear an oath he doesn't intend to keep? Nope.

Where’s Miss Willow? Open Thread

by WaterGirl|  January 17, 20259:05 am| 27 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Pet Blogging

I don’t see any action in the back room, so I’ll just pop this up as an Open Thread.  I pulled it yesterday when it was only up to for 5 minutes or so before the blogfather put his up.

Can you find Miss Willow?

I jokingly call Miss Willow a slut, because she mostly sleeps with me when it’s cold, or if I have even her a special treat that day, like whipped cream.  I guess the rest of the time I am not worthy! :-)  Seriously, though, I love her dearly, and she’s my girl who knows when I’m sad and she comes over to comfort me.  She’s very maternal; she would take Tucker’s side when he was a baby and her kitty brother Mr. Bear would get mad at Tucker.  It’s good to have another girl in the house!

There’s a vent on the wall with the dresser in the bedroom.

I have never seen her there before.  This must be the special “it’s been close to zero” hiding place.

Who else is tired of the cold?
