Now Buying Stories! (i.e. Pre-introducing: My Adventure Game)

by Major Major Major Major|  July 13, 20244:32 pm| 49 Comments

This post is in: Authors In Our Midst, Gamer Dork, Open Threads, Popular Culture

Besides gardening and other various home improvement stuff, I’ve used most of my free time these days making a video game with my friend. It’s been a massive undertaking. I’d heard that game development is fractally difficult–every sub-component just as tricky as its parent–and boy did that ever turn out to be true. We’re both pretty experienced programmers, so we were able to manage the scope creep, at least; no features we don’t absolutely need, no matter how cool they would be. Anyway: I’m happy to say we are finally at the point where we can start introducing people to it! Before I do, I’ll note that this is not really shameless self-promotion; we are looking to buy some fiction, but you need context first, and also the pictures are pretty and I want to talk about something I think is exciting. (The shameless self-promotion will come later when I do one (1) post about the Kickstarter.)

So without further ado, here’s our first piece of promo art.

Pre-introducing: My Adventure Game

Starspawn is set in the Cthulhu-mythos universe, drawing primarily from the works of H.P. Lovecraft himself. Rather than paraphrase myself, I’ll just quote from our website:

It’s shaping up to be a beautiful spring at Miskatonic University. Finishing your independent study is your only real concern. One night, you dream of a strange frozen wasteland full of monsters and ancient ruins. You wake up shaken, but not worried—until you realize that your classmates, too, seem a little less human than they did yesterday. To top it off, somebody’s ransacked the geology lab, ruining the project you need to ace to keep your scholarship, and stealing something irreplaceable–a deep core sample of very ancient Antarctic soil.

Were the things you saw in the dream real? Was the quest you received more than the hallucination of a stressed sophomore? And what are you supposed to do with the knowledge that your best friend is some sort of fish-monster?

Explore worlds magical and mundane while evading monsters, solving puzzles, and maybe finding love. Starspawn: A Miskatonic Mystery offers a game mode for everyone, with top-down exploration, arcade minigames, 90s-style point-and-click puzzles, dating sim elements, and visual novel storytelling!

This is a story-driven game with lots of point-and-click first-person puzzles, as well as areas to explore in a top-down 16-bit mode. There are also dating sim elements, where you have to manage your free time to develop your relationships (platonic or otherwise) with various characters, each of whom has a side narrative that changes based on the choices you make. We’re aiming for about ten hours of play time. I’m super excited to share more as we work our way towards the demo. It’s been incredibly challenging and rewarding and I have so many thoughts about the development process. And the artists we’re working with are amazing, too. We’re lucky to have assembled a great team.

Later this year, we’ll be doing a Kickstarter to make sure we can afford all the art we need to finish strong, but for now, I’m trying out something a little fun: we would like to do a short story anthology set in the game universe as a Kickstarter reward! Part of the backstory is a cool (imo) Cold War thing, and we thought it would be fun to let people play in that sandbox if they wanted to. I know we have some writers here, and people who know writers, so I figured I would share it with you all. Here are the submission details. They do contain some (marked) spoilers for the setting, obviously, so beware, if you care. We can only afford hobbyist-tier rates, unfortunately, but it is what it is.

Stuff I Don’t Know

Stuff I Don't Know

This is drag queen Pattiegonia headlining Denver Pride.  As I mentioned in the comments, I have an Instagram that is about following people who love the outdoors and travel.  I follow Pattie because she loves the outdoor and travel, but she’s also has been posting anti-Project 2025 stuff, because she also serves as a resource and inspiration for LGBTQ youth.  I’ve been seeing some pieces about the groundswell of anti-2025 sharing by young social media content creators (here’s one piece about it).  I don’t know about you, but all my nieces and nephews, and their friends, seem to get most of their “news” from social media.  This, to me, is a huge unknown about the election.

Related to that, I had to LOL seeing that Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, made the announcement that Trump is off of double-secret probation on Facebook and Instagram.  How fair and balanced for Zuck to choose the former Tory deputy PM under Cameron the person who determines how to treat Trump on his platforms.

Another thing I sure don’t understand is how much to trust polls.  Here’s a piece rounding up all the issues with polls after the polls missed in 2022.  Certainly movement around the margin of error, which is what we’re seeing now with Trump v Biden head-to-head, isn’t that significant.  I really doubt that a voter who will vote for say, Reuben Gallego, will spit their ticket to vote for Trump,   But I don’t doubt that voters will vote for an initiated measure allowing abortion access while at the same time voting for a Republican.  Especially in red states, initiated measures are treated as a corrective for single issues where the voters disagree with their elected officials.  That said, I’m super skeptical about “blacks/hispanics moving away from Biden” stories that are based on the crosstabs of 1000 respondent polls.

Also, as we all know, national polls don’t really tell the story for the Presidential race.  Here’s 538’s latest analysis of post-debate polling in swing states:

Stuff I Don't Know 1

This is troubling.

Finally, polling Kamala Harris v Trump and Biden v Trump and thinking that the Harris number means anything prior to months of Republican attacks is, I think, at least a little bit questionable.

I don’t really have a big point to make here — just that anyone who’s confident of their understanding of the current state of play probably doesn’t know what they’re talking about.  Social media and polling are just two factors among many.  Politics have changed in the past 15-20 years and I don’t think anyone has really caught up.

Grey Dawn Open Thread: Good Advice Concerning Our Failed Major Media

by Anne Laurie|  July 13, 20245:20 am| 217 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Our Failed Media Experiment

I was raised Irish; letting go of grievances is not in my skill set…

Alright, let's make a thread out of this.

Biden robbed them of their sense of control in 2020. They delight in being kingmakers, in their endorsements or lack thereof making or breaking campaigns. And yes, they all view each other as part of one big club, regardless of company. https://t.co/6QERphok9l

— Argella Stone (@argellastone) July 4, 2024

In 2020 Biden was not supposed to win the nomination, it was supposed to be someone popular in the club, or at least someone they’d have fun playing with, and he humiliated them and their friends in the club by winning in spite of their rejection.

Barack Obama was, briefly, palatable to them because he was useful in the 2008 primary. They had a grudge against Hillary dating back to the 90s and he swooped in and won the nomination everyone thought was hers, and they enjoyed convincing themselves they won it for him.

This part is crucial. They genuinely firmly believed that they won it for Obama. That without their help, he wouldn’t have won it at all. And that thrill was like a drug. And they lashed out like addicts whenever anyone tried taking it away from them.

Remember early on in the Obama admin when they iced out Fox News in response to them blatantly lying about the admin’s goals? CNN lashed out against him, MSNBC. Fucking Jon Stewart dedicated an entire monologue to chewing him out over it. Because he hurt their friends. The club.

And the admin stood down and begrudgingly let Fox back in, even though they spent the rest of his administration spewing blatant lies and vitriol against him. But that more or less satisfied the club, because they felt he remembered who the boss was.

Biden can’t do that for them. Nothing he can say or do can ever make them forgive him for making them feel weak by having the audacity to win. They’ve been twitching for this moment for three and a half years, begging for it. Because they are narcissistic little freaks.

People need to calm down. The media is going to push relentlessly the narrative that Biden is down in the polls and cannot win because they have a massive profit incentive to do so. You need to recognize this and ignore them. Push hard for the Dems and we will succeed. A 🧵.

— Not a Good Jewish Girl 🇮🇱✡️ (@estherzelda0514) July 12, 2024

Think about it rationally. Republicans are uninterested in pieces about how Trump is bad, and Dems don’t click enough on them. What are both demographics interested in? Dems in disarray and Biden/Dems are bad pieces. This creates a doom loop.

The news reports on what gets them ad revenue and clicks. The more they whip Dems into a frenzy, the more you click on the news and read their pieces, even if you’re trying to debunk them or avoid panicking by reading past the headline.

You need to resist this urge to feed the beast. Don’t participate in the doom loop. Do not click on or share these stories. The good news is that we have enormous power to kill this narrative and force the media to pivot to Trump’s many many issues.

You just need to be disciplined and encourage people out of the doom loop. Share stories about how Biden is doing well, good poll results, and stuff like Project 2025. Create the vibes you want to see in the world. Don’t give in to the feelings of hopelessness.

“The press conference never mattered to the ruling class. They had already made their decision, based on a single snapshot in time, and nothing—not even nuanced policy discussion that Biden’s opponent is wholly incapable of—was going to change their minds.” https://t.co/BDn8ttRm7r

— Angry Staffer 🌻 (@Angry_Staffer) July 12, 2024

Angry Staffer on “A Republic, If You Can Keep It”:

… As I sat watching last night’s press conference, I felt optimistic for the first time in what felt like weeks. Biden was doing really well. Not fantastic, but well enough. He was answering every question, displaying a mastery of the facts, weaving in and out of complex foreign policy issues, talking about world leaders and their individual personalities, and yes, making the occasional gaffe – he is still Joe Biden, after all.

This felt OK. It didn’t matter that if this Joe Biden had shown up to the debate two weeks ago, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. Surely, this would help quiet – though certainly not silence – the calls for Biden’s political head, right?

Wrong. Before the final reverberations of his microphone fully dulled, milquetoast Democrats began hitting send on their preloaded Tweets, once again demanding that he withdraw from the race for the good of the country.

Early this morning, donors began saying they would withhold pledges if he remained the nominee…

Are we really going to push out one of the best Presidents in modern history because he’s old, while we ignore the hypergrifting charlatan with 34 felonies and an authoritarian bent, all because he’s three years younger?

If you can keep it, indeed.

Suddenly, I wonder if we can.

To be clear, the consequences of this election — of any election — are too dire to sit it out. I’m going to fight like hell to elect whoever the Democratic nominee is, and you should too.

It would just be really nice if Democrats could tone down the circular firing squad for the sake of the nation, particularly when there’s no clear, alternative path to victory.

Friday Night Open Thread

by John Cole|  July 12, 20249:30 pm| 94 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House", Open Threads

I joined a gym today. Well, I started the process of joining the gym today. It’s a wellness center associated with a local hospital, and I filled out the paperwork and a letter is being faxed to my family doctor since I am over 50 and they need to have them sign off that I will not drop dead the moment I begin an aerobic activity. Which, I mean, fair enough, but it is not lost on me that from the age of nine to the age of 54 I have gone from needing a permission slip to go to the bathroom to needing a permission slip to go to the gym.

I chose the Wellness Center because it was cheap, it had a pool and water aerobics courses, and it isn’t a hip influencer or musclehead outfit. I’ll be there with olds like me, and most likely anyone younger than me will probably be staff. Case in point, the person who processed my paperwork at the gym today was in one of my mass lecture courses when I was a Doc student, predating even Balloon Juice. So all those reasons, and did I also mention it was cheap and you can pay monthly instead of requiring quarterly or annually?

At any rate, I have been thinking about aging a lot, for obvious reasons, but it’s also clear to me that a lot of the decisions I make RIGHT NOW, both healthwise and about the future, are quite critical. But one of the more surprising things to become evident to me with with all the discussions about Biden’s age right now is that it is painfully obvious that a large number of Americans simply have no idea between the normal aging process and dementia/alzheimers/parkinsons/etc. Just none.

And I don’t know why that is. I mean I know that this is a culture that values youth and beauty over all else, and that we push elderly out of sight so they are neither seen nor heard, but I didn’t realize that so many Americans are so alienated from older people that they don’t know the difference between someone who is just old and someone who is cognitively unwell. It’s very weird to me.

I guess on reflection I have spent a lot more time with older people than many, or maybe it is because even as a child my parents would say things like “he’s 11 going on 74” when talking about me, but I have always gravitated to people older than me. Growing up, there were always college kids around and even thought they were only 18-22, as a 9 year old, that is older. Then all the college professors that lived in town who I did yardwork and stuff for, or the old guys from WWII who used to take me to County GOP meetings, or when I was a dj at the radio station I would engineer Monday Night Oldies with one senior and the Ashbourne Hour (a three hour classical music show) with Dr. Taylor, or so on. Plus, WV is an aging population, so proportionally I have always been around a lot of older people.

And I understand how the culture can change your perspective- after spending a few years on active duty in the military, where old is someone who is a SFC or E-8 means 28-32 years, when I got out I could not believe how old everyone was. After spending a couple really long and intense years with nothing but 18-25 year olds, it was a culture shock. But it can’t be that bad, can it?

It’s just so weird and it means that people aren’t even paying attention to their own aging. I mean you still feel like the same you even though you are older, right? It’s just there are somethings you can’t do as well as you did before, but you didn’t just become worthless, did you? You just adapt and do things smarter or differently. Except in the cases of actual cognitive decline, the vast majority of elderly people you see still have a young person on the inside, just the outside is a touch dinged up and you just gotta run the engine a little longer to warm up and maybe can’t reach the same top speed you used to.

It’s also kinda weird that this is the way things are in the US, especially in the post ADA world, the United States is so much more accessible than other countries are for people who are a little older and have a hitch in their giddyup. As a younger country (and I am talking about the country itself, not the residents), we aren’t dominated by 800 year old buildings and the like. Modernity makes accessibility easier. So you should be seeing more elderly people out and about and be more used to interacting with them.

The whole thing is bizarre, and as someone who is rapidly becoming a member of the “olds,” it is really depressing. God damned kids.

Painting by NEIVANMADE. The background is black. There is a white cross in a broken window frame. In front of it is a hispital bed with an IV stand falling across it. Wires from a broken monitor on the right are strewn on the floor with a yellow basketball on the right and teddy bear on the left. In the foreground are fragments of a Russian cruise missile, which are red, and have the "Z" war symbol. In the top of the painting in grey is written "Children's Hospital." Below that in red "Is Just Another Target for Russia" is written.

Quick housekeeping note. First, Rosie is still doing very well. There does not appear to be a strong reaction this week. She’s got one more week off – rounds three and four are every other week – before her next treatment. Thank you all for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

We start with the latest addition to the butcher’s bill from Russia’s genocidal attack on the children’s hospital in Kyiv.

Yehor Zavadetskyi, a 7-year-old boy who was in the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital during the Russian missile attack on July 8, has died.

Yehor was admitted to Okhmatdyt after falling off a bicycle. On June 20, he suffered an internal hemorrhage, severe bruising of the abdominal wall and a hematoma on the liver.

After the Russian attack, he had to be moved to another hospital. Doctors continued fighting for Yehor’s life but couldn’t save him.

If he hadn’t needed to be moved, maybe Yehor would be still alive.

The death toll of the Russian attack keeps growing.

Deepest condolences to the family.

Russia, of course, continues its relentless attempt to reduce Kharkiv to rubble.

I Invite You to Build People-to-People Connections That Will Last Forever – Speech by the President of Ukraine at the Meeting of the US National Governors Association

12 July 2024 – 23:26

Governor Cox,

Esteemed Governors and all present here,

First of all thank you very much for the invitation and thank you to all who really cares about protecting life.

These days, I have been in Washington. I visited the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. I was in the United States Congress – speaking with representatives of both parties, in both chambers. I was at the White House and the NATO Summit – meeting with President Biden. At each of these meetings, I thanked America, all our friends in America, and all Americans who support Ukraine, our people, our freedom, our independence in this terrible war started by Russia. Thank you so much for your support! Thank you!

Unfortunately, there are different wars in the world, but this is a war where it is absolutely clear what is good and what boundaries evil crosses. This is one of the most transparent battles between good and evil of our time. It is clear that Ukraine has done nothing wrong before God and people, and all the pain our country suffers – is only the result of Russia’s criminal actions and sick desires, only its unprovoked and unjust aggression. So, it is so valuable that so many people and countries have united to help us – to save our freedom and, thus, the common human understanding that evil must always lose. What else would our world rely on if evil did not lose and if good people did not unite in battles against what threatens any life and any values? Of course, everyone does what they must. I have said many times that we do not ask the United States and other partners to fight for us. We do not ask for your boots on the ground. The only thing we ask for is sufficient support – air defense systems for our cities, weapons for our men and women on the front line, support in protecting normal life and rebuilding. This is all we need to withstand and drive Russia from our land and to send a strong signal to all other potential aggressors which are watching. And we truly receive such support. I am grateful for this. Thank you again. We receive it from American friends, from dozens of countries – and America’s leadership is indeed felt. We receive it from many ordinary people, communities, and companies from different parts of the world – and everyone who does not remain indifferent truly protects life. As it has been said, “The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to their labor.”

Today, I especially want to personally thank you for your support – the state of Utah, other states, many American hearts, and many American communities – all those who do not want and will not allow evil to prevail.

Dear friends,

Many of you have probably heard or seen in the media about the recent Russian missile strike on a children’s hospital. Several days ago. A direct hit on one of the hospital buildings – and this could not have been just a coincidence. Children who, with the help of doctors, are trying to overcome terrible diseases such as cancer and heart diseases – found themselves on the street, amidst ruins, and some were trapped under the debris. The hospital “Okhmatdyt,” one of the best children’s hospitals not only in Ukraine but in all of Europe, was significantly damaged. We are now working to quickly restore its operations and ensure that children can be treated in other hospitals – cancer does not wait for the Russians to stop bombing our cities, and children need treatment now. Children also need to go to school. Their parents need to feel at least basic safety – to be able to live, work, and provide for their families. Just think about the numbers – Russia destroyed nearly one hundred and sixty thousands of civilian objects, just one hundred and thirty thousand homes, three thousand schools, seven hundred medical, and one hundred and seventy churches. Who are they? All of this presents us with a huge range of tasks, and many of them will be resolved within communities, very close to the ground. And that is why we so deeply appreciate when our friends from around the world come to Ukraine to see everything for themselves, speak the truth about what they have witnessed, help rebuild all that is necessary for a normal life, and personally tell everyone who has not seen such a war that good must always triumph in war. To make this happen – to ensure the true victory of good – your voice, each governor, each community leader, all pure hearts, is crucial. I invite all of you to visit Ukraine – to see our people, our struggle. I am proud of our people and what Ukrainians are achieving now. Believe me, together we can achieve much more for all of us – for our countries, for our communities, for our people. I invite you to build people-to-people connections that will last forever. We already see Utah’s contribution to rebuilding our country – you have helped thousands of people. And such help can be help for millions of people, and for the cause of good in general, which rewards everyone – regardless of where they live. Because we all share the same values and we do not want war to disrupt life anywhere.

Thank you for your support!

I wish you fruitful work, productive discussions at these meetings, and I hope that together – Ukrainians and Americans – we will prevail.

God bless America and Americans.

Andrew Takhistov, 18, of East Brunswick, New Jersey, was arrested yesterday and made his initial appearance in court today for allegedly soliciting another individual to destroy energy facilities.

“Andrew Takhistov was allegedly on his way to Ukraine to join the Russian Volunteer Corps when we arrested him on charges of recruiting an individual to destroy an electrical substation here in the United States in order to advance his white supremacist ideology,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “I am grateful to the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force for their exceptional work disrupting this dangerous plot.”

“This complaint alleges that the defendant’s posts referenced Adolf Hitler, encouraged violence against Black and Jewish communities, praised mass shooters, and discussed causing death and destruction on a large scale,” said U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger for the District of New Jersey. “The defendant was allegedly enroute to join the Russian Volunteer Corps, which he described as specializing in assassinations, attacks on power grids, and other infrastructure sabotage, so that he could act on his violent plans. We will not tolerate these kinds of alleged terroristic threats, and working with our partners, we will always be ready to root out and bring to justice anyone who attempts to carry out these acts.”

According to court documents, in January, Takhistov began communicating on a social messaging platform with an individual who, unbeknownst to Takhistov, was an undercover law enforcement employee. Takhistov had previously posted on the messaging platform (often posting in racially/ethnically motivated extremist [RMVE]-aligned channels), requesting advice about weapons, disseminating manuals on how to construct homemade weapons, and expressing interest in traveling overseas to engage in paramilitary-style training. Throughout these posts, Takhistov referenced Adolf Hitler, encouraged violence against various ethnic and religious communities (including Black and Jewish individuals), and praised mass shooters.

Throughout Takhistov’s communications with the undercover employee, Takhistov repeatedly referred to his RMVE ideology and his desire to advance that ideology through violent means. In May, Takhistov informed the undercover employee that he was planning to travel to Ukraine in July to join the Russian Volunteer Corps, explaining that he chose this organization because it was openly National Socialist and, more importantly, specialized in assassinations, attacks on power grids and other infrastructure sabotage.

Takhistov discussed infrastructure sabotage, specifically how to damage an electrical substation using Mylar balloons or Molotov cocktails, which Takhistov explained how to make. Takhistov told the undercover employee that, while Takhistov was in the Ukraine, the undercover employee needed to carry out at least one event of serious activism.

On two occasions in June and July, at Takhistov’s direction, Takhistov and the undercover employee drove to two different electrical substations in North Brunswick and New Brunswick, New Jersey. During these visits, Takhistov instructed the undercover employee on numerous aspects of how to conduct an attack on an electrical substation.

On July 5, during one of these meetings, Takhistov directed the undercover employee to take several photographs of the electrical substations so that Takhistov could send them to his Russian friend for additional advice on how to best sabotage the stations.

Takhistov was arrested Wednesday afternoon at Newark Liberty International Airport where he was planning to travel to Paris on his way to Ukraine.

Takhistov is charged with one count of soliciting another individual to engage in criminal conduct that involved destroying a public service enterprise group circuit breaker and substation. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $125,000 fine.

The FBI is investigating the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Vera Varshavsky for the District of New Jersey and Trial Attorney James Donnelly of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting the case.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Two items out of DC. The first is that Secretary Austin had a call with his Russian counterpart. Here’s the details from the transcript of the DOD’s press briefing from earlier today:

Separately this morning, Secretary Austin also spoke by phone with Russian Minister of Defense, Andrey Belousov.

During the call, the Secretary emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. The last time Secretary Austin spoke with his Russian counterpart was on June 25, 2024, and later today, a brief readout of the call will be posted to defense.gov.

Q: And then on the call with the Russian counterpart with Minister Belousov, um, this is now two calls in two and a half weeks. Was this — was this one also initiated by Secretary Austin? And — and it certainly seems like these are more common than they’ve been over the course of two and a half years — of the last two and a half years. Is — is this to be expected to continue? Will there be a more regular pace of — of discussions here between the two?

MS. SINGH: This call was initiated by the Russian minister of Defense. In terms of future calls, of course, nothing to announce, but as the secretary has said and what I also mentioned at the top is that maintaining lines of communication is incredibly important right now. If there are future calls, we’d read those out as well.

Q: Was there any specific reason given about —

MS. SINGH: Yeah, I just don’t have any more to provide at this time.

Q: Thanks, Sabrina. Uh, President Zelenskyy has insisted that lifting all restrictions, so Ukraine can strike military targets within Russia would be a quote “game changer” and that Ukraine needs to hit those targets enabled to win. What’s the Pentagon’s assessment of that?

MS. SINGH: I think the president spoke to this very directly yesterday at his press conference. Our policy hasn’t changed. We do allow those cross border strikes when Russia is attacking from the other side of the border. And as the war has changed, we have changed. Our policies have adapted. And you’ve seen that play out in Kharkiv and it could expand into other areas.

But right now we have not authorized the use of ATACMS for deep strike capabilities within Russia. I have to remind you, they have other long-range capabilities that are not provided by the United States, but in terms of our policy that has not changed.

Q: So — so what’s this coming from then? Because throughout the week at the NATO summit, Zelenskyy was pretty adamant that this is a game changer, uh, so — so is that just not true?

MS. SINGH: Look, of course, you’re going to advocate on behalf of your country. You know, we don’t take any issue with that. Our policy still remains the same. We believe that Ukraine continues to be successful in the battlefield. With our policy in place, we’ve been able to see them hold and strengthen their lines around Kharkiv.

Could our policy — could they be allowed to use it into other areas? We’re always adapting. And as the war has changed, our policy has changed. But of course, we are always mindful of escalation and that’s something, that is the reason why we have the policy the way it is. Constantine?

Politico has the details regarding the Ukrainian request to have the restrictions on the use of US supplied munitions lifted or, at least, revised:

FIRST IN NATSEC DAILY — REQUEST REJECTED: Ukrainian leaders walked away frustrated after Biden waved off their latest request to lift restrictions on the use of U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia, people familiar with the conversation told our own ALEX WARD and Matt.

Ukrainian President VOLODYMYR ZELENSKYY brought up the issue toward the end of the bilateral discussion on Thursday as the NATO summit came to a close, leading Biden to say both sides should keep talking, according to three people familiar. That didn’t close the door to eventually lifting the restrictions, but it was still far from a “yes,” the people said.

Zelenskyy and ANDRIY YERMAK, his chief of staff, were extremely disappointed after the conversation, a person familiar with the matter said.

“The feeling is always the same: They will lift restrictions eventually, but some people have to die first. It seems like destroying a children’s hospital is not enough,” said the person, who like others was granted anonymity to discuss the private meeting.

Biden addressed how he responded to Zelenskyy during his high-profile news conference Thursday night: “If he had the capacity to strike Moscow, strike the Kremlin, would that make sense? It wouldn’t,” Biden said, even though the U.S. has not transferred any weapons to Ukraine that put the Russian capital in range.

For want of a nail!

It is important to keep in mind that Biden’s decisions are being made within the reality of Russia’s ultimate intentions for Ukraine:

Medvedev: Even if Ukraine surrenders the territories we claim and renounces NATO aspirations in exchange for a peace deal, sooner or later we would still have to put the nail into the coffin of Ukrainian statehood and return the rest of the country’s lands “into the bosom of…

Russia once again telegraphs what’s on it’s targeting deck.
