On The Road – mad citizen – Winter Snow February 26 2020 Fishers Indiana

by Alain Chamot (1971-2020)|  March 9, 20205:00 am| 10 Comments

This post is in: On The Road, Photo Blogging

Good morning everyone,

We were on the southern edge of this week’s snowstorm as it made it’s way across the U.S. this week. These photos are from Wednesday, February 26 at the local park a mile down the road from my home in Fishers, Indiana (adjacent city NE of Indianapolis). It’s Cumberland Park and the photos are from a Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile phone. The snow was heavy and wet, sticking to everything except the roads and sidewalks since the temps were right around freezing. It made for some lovely winter scenes today. These photos are all in color, although our typical midwestern grayscale does make it seem otherwise.

BREAKING from me & @AlexNBCNews : Members of Congress are becoming increasingly anxious about coronavirus and there is growing pressure on leadership to take steps to protect lawmakers — even potentially recessing for a period of weeks, according to two Democratic sources

And Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., is also self-quarantining after close contact with the CPAC attendee, as are several members of his senior staff. Gosar is closing his Washington office for the week.

“Members are very nervous,” a senior Democratic leadership aide said.

COVID-19 / Coronavirus: A Few Longer Pieces

VIRUS HUNTERS: @DrJAshton reports on the scientists working in the field to identify new viruses, like the COVID-19, determine how they spread and help stop outbreaks from happening. #ABC2020 https://t.co/IXpLJk5lbq pic.twitter.com/Yfs95tPZMZ

In the Atlantic, “How to Misinform Yourself About the Coronavirus: Even if you avoid the conspiracy theories, tweeting through a global emergency is messy, context-free, and disorienting”:

… Most Americans cannot read Chinese, nor are they present in large numbers on Chinese social-media sites such as Weibo and WeChat. The internet has fractured over the past decade, with American and Chinese social-media companies carving up distinct parts of the world. While that makes it difficult for many Americans to parse what’s happening on Chinese social media, it also creates an opportunity for people who are tapped in on both sides. They can arbitrage from the Chinese to the American internet, turning WeChat videos into Twitter gold. Accounts big and small have whipped up quite an apocalyptic fervor in the past weeks, posting scary videos of dubious provenance and veracity. The mainstream media has proceeded carefully, and reporters’ stories have seemingly been unable to satiate the rising hunger for more information about coronavirus…

After talking to several friends, I realize many ppl still aren't prepared for the societal impacts of coronavirus. Want to dedicate a thread about what I observed in Chinese society, and what you should be mentally prepared for. It goes beyond the disease itself:

— Tony Lin (@tony_zy) March 7, 2020

Some extracts from a long, but IMO important, thread:

1.Trauma. As @MariaRepnikova said, it’s the 1st global epidemic in the era of social media & live-streaming. If the outbreak gets worse, you WILL have extremely helpless moments, witnessing ppl seeking help and some die in a way closer than ever. I saw hundreds online already..

2. Hospital overcapacity. A massive outbreak can strain local medical system. Do u know in China, Wuhan has the second-most medical professionals per 1000 ppl, and the most top tier hospital per 10000 ppl? And w/o sufficient intensive care, coronavirus is far deadlier…

3. Secondary disasters. Once the hospital is at capacity, other patients, ppl who depend on prescription drugs, pregnant women, all could face imminent health issues. Here’s a man who can’t access hiv drugs:

A heartbreaking case during Hubei lockdown: a man posted for help. His HIV meds is running out & he can’t get new ones cuz of the roadblock. Local police soon reached out. But instead of helping him get new medicine—police told on him to his parents. pic.twitter.com/keqvVE3B5B

— Tony Lin (@tony_zy) January 25, 2020

4. Community and cross infection. Coronavirus spread fast across the community. When the adults are all quarantined, who takes care of their children? Another tragedy here: https://t.co/mVpSFOoc7W

— Tony Lin (@tony_zy) March 7, 2020

5. Fake news and alternative medication. This has been going on for a while. In China there’s government-endorsed Chinese medicine (very little clinical evidence), and the US shines with Mike Pence’s prayers…

Disinformation Watch: It Begins

by Cheryl Rofer|  March 8, 20207:22 pm| 223 Comments

This post is in: Election 2020, Information Warfare

There’s been plenty of disinformation about all the candidates, and our intelligence organizations tell us that Russia is adding its share, but with potentially decisive primaries coming up on Tuesday, one big campaign has swung into action.

I’ve seen people who I thought should have known better sharing it. They are Bernie supporters, or angry that another candidate has dropped out. Joe Biden is the target, and the claim is that he’s losing his mental acuity.

A week or two ago, I saw questions being raised, and I decided to pay more attention to Biden, particularly in news clips where he was speaking extemporaneously. I thought he sounded like he’s always sounded – can be a bit goofy and off-topic, but coherent in making his points. Also an occasional stumble that can easily be attributed to his stutter.

Both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have begun attacking Biden for alleged “cognitive decline.” Which is kind of funny coming from a man who told us that he knows more than the scientists at CDC and pathetic from someone who may have to support Biden in November. Washington Monthly summarizes the information on the attacks.

I’ve seen a lot of it in the past week on Facebook and Twitter and have called out some people who should know better. I’m also not sharing anything on Biden’s health or mental state.

And it only gets worse from here.

Peripherally related:

There’s another reason things turned for the US economy last week… A geopolitical game over oil prices outside US control.
https://t.co/oXJARP3ws7

— Shawn Donnan (@sdonnan) March 7, 2020

At 10:16 a.m. on a wet and dreary Friday morning, Russia’s energy minister walked into OPEC’s headquarters in central Vienna knowing his boss was ready to turn the global oil market upside down.

Alexander Novak told his Saudi Arabian counterpart Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman that Russia was unwilling to cut oil production further. The Kremlin had decided that propping up prices as the coronavirus ravaged energy demand would be a gift to the U.S. shale industry. The frackers had added millions of barrels of oil to the global market while Russian companies kept wells idle. Now it was time to squeeze the Americans.

For over three years, President Vladimir Putin had kept Russia inside the OPEC+ coalition, allying with Saudi Arabia and the other members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to curb oil production and support prices. On top of helping Russia’s treasury – energy exports are the largest source of state revenue – the alliance brought foreign policy gains, creating a bond with Saudi Arabia’s new leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

But the OPEC+ deal also aided America’s shale industry and Russia was increasingly angry with the Trump administration’s willingness to employ energy as a political and economic tool. It was especially irked by the U.S.’s use of sanctions to prevent the completion of a pipeline linking Siberia’s gas fields with Germany, known as Nord Stream 2. The White House has also targeted the Venezuelan business of Russia’s state-oil producer Rosneft.

“The Kremlin has decided to sacrifice OPEC+ to stop U.S. shale producers and punish the U.S. for messing with Nord Stream 2,” said Alexander Dynkin, president of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations in Moscow, a state-run think tank. “Of course, to upset Saudi Arabia could be a risky thing, but this is Russia’s strategy at the moment – flexible geometry of interests.”

The OPEC+ deal had never been popular with many in the Russian oil industry, who resented having to hold back investments in new and potentially profitable projects. In particular, Igor Sechin, the powerful boss of Rosneft and a long-time Putin ally, lobbied against the curbs, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing private conversations.

The Kremlin was also disappointed the alliance with Riyadh hadn’t yielded major Saudi investments in Russia.

For several months, Novak and his team had been telling Saudi officials they liked being in the OPEC+ alliance but were reluctant to deepen production cuts, according to people familiar with the relationship. At the last OPEC meeting in December, Russia negotiated a position that allowed it to keep production fairly steady while Saudi Arabia shouldered big reductions.

When the coronavirus started devastating Chinese economic activity in early February – cutting oil demand in Saudi Arabia’s biggest customer by 20% — Prince Abdulaziz tried to convince Novak that they should call an early OPEC+ meeting in response to cutback supply. Novak said no. The Saudi king and Putin spoke by phone – it didn’t help.

As the virus spread and analysts forecast the worst year for oil demand since the global financial crisis, the Saudi camp was hopeful Moscow could be won round at the next scheduled OPEC meeting in early March. The Russians didn’t rule out deepening cuts, but kept making the point that shale producers should be made to share the pain. Putin, who has been the final arbiter of Russia’s OPEC+ policy since the alliance started in 2016, met oil Russian producers and key ministers last Sunday…

Tonight we kick off Episode 3 of the weekly Guest Post series: Medium Cool with BGinCHI.

In case you missed the introduction to the series:  Culture as a Hedge Against this Soul-Sucking Political Miasma We’re Living In

Tonight’s Topic: Ethnicity, as it’s expressed in books, films, and TV.

Take it away, BG!

In this week’s Medium Cool, we’re talking about ethnicity, as it’s expressed in books, films, and TV.

I just finished teaching a course called “Ethnic Literatures,” in which we read a bunch of terrific books: a few for context (on the constructions of history and on race), the rest novels, and a couple books of poetry. What emerged in the class was a deep dive into the ethnic groups/minority cultures struggled with poverty, racism, and language, kept traditions vibrant, and worked to construct new lives.

What books or films or TV shows do this in ways that have been interesting to you? How did they do it? If it’s your own ethnicity, how did they get it right or wrong? If it’s another ethnic group, what did you learn? If you’re outside the US, or there’s a work about ethnicity in another country, let us have it.

Reluctantly the panic begins to catch

I’m pretty scared about coronavirus. I’m 50 and have chronic asthma. And I’ve got a young kid and a wife to take care of. I don’t think I want to talk about much about the epidemic here.

So I’m going to try to do fun topic posts and raise money for Democrats in the Senate. This shitshow in our government right now and its capacity to kill millions of people…well, you know we’ve got to double down on changing the guard as much as we can this fall.

Here’s one that came to me yesterday when I heard a crappy cover of a Beatles song: what examples can you think of songs where there are not one not two but three different good versions of it? Only one I can think of “Heard It Through the Grapevine” with Marvin, Gladys and CCR. Any others? And obviously standards don’t count — there’s probably 30 great versions of My Funny Valentine.

Give here to the Balloon Juice Senate fund which is split between the eventual Democratic nominees in Maine, Iowa, NC, Arizona, Georgia, and Colorado. Raised the goal to 30K 50K.
