Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Requiescat in pace, Flaco (Junk Food’ll Kill Ya)

This post is in: Nature, Riveted By The Sociological Significance Of It All

New York City’s celebrity owl Flaco died from a traumatic impact, zoologists confirmed, a day after he reportedly flew into a building. There is further testing planned to determine if the Eurasian eagle-owl may have been sick. pic.twitter.com/EEUy6OdZhO

Flaco, New York’s famous owl, had rat poison in his system when he died https://t.co/qGJuyizUzo

— Jeffrey Levin 🇺🇦 (@jilevin) March 27, 2024

New York City has always had a soft spot for a louche European with a reputation as an apex predator… Although, actually, Flaco was born (at a captive bird park) in North Carolina. He lived twelve years in a small enclosure, and might’ve lived another forty there, but thirteen years is a good lifespan for eagle owls in the wild even in their natural habitat. Per the Washington Post:

After Flaco the owl escaped a vandalized cage at the Central Park Zoo and became a local celebrity last year, animal experts warned the public of the risks the bird faced in the wild. On Monday [March 25th], the Wildlife Conservation Society, which oversees New York’s Central Park Zoo, announced that those hazards led to Flaco’s death.

Flaco died last month after an apparent collision with a building on the Upper West Side. A necropsy exam later revealed that at the time of his death, Flaco had a herpesvirus from eating feral pigeons and had consumed four rodenticides used for rat control, the Wildlife Conservation Society said in a statement.

Paul Calle, the Wildlife Conservation Society’s chief veterinarian, told The Washington Post that the virus, the rat poisons and the injuries Flaco suffered after flying into a building might have all contributed to the 13-year-old Eurasian eagle owl’s death.

“Sadly, they’re all things that we’ve seen in the past,” Calle said. “They’re kind of some of the risks that wildlife have when they live in the city.”

Flaco was transferred to the Central Park Zoo in 2010 after he was born at a North Carolina bird park. The owl lived there for nearly 12 years until someone cut the steel mesh of his exhibit in February 2023.

While zoo staff found Flaco and started tracking him, they were unable to capture him with bait and owl-call recordings. The New York Police Department posted on social media that Flaco even evaded officers. Zoo officials were initially worried the owl wouldn’t find food in the wild, but witnessed Flaco hunting and eating prey in Central Park within days of his escape…

The Wildlife Conservation Society said in a statement at the time that the person who damaged Flaco’s exhibit was “responsible for his death.” A spokesman for the New York Police Department told The Post on Tuesday that officers are still searching for the perpetrator.

Eurasian eagle owls, which are native to Europe, Asia and the Middle East, typically live for one or two decades in the wild and up to 60 years in captivity, said Jessica Wilson, the executive director of New York City Audubon, a group that protects wild birds…

Wilson told The Post that rodenticides can cause muscle weakness and hemorrhages when consumed by birds, and those side effects might have caused Flaco to fly into a building.

“The minute he flew out of the Central Park Zoo, he was presented with so many different threats — threats that wild birds face every day,” Wilson said. “And it was really just a matter of time before one or multiple of those threats did him in.”

Insurrections Have Consequences, and Elections Do Too!

Insurrections have consequences – and they are catching up with certain prominent Arizona Republican ELECTION DENIERS.  It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of people.

We all know that Arizona is a critical swing state in 2024.  But things are not going well for its clownish Republican party.   Here’s one more example.

Arizona State Attorney General Mayes has been quietly working behind the scenes to assemble ironclad cases against Arizona’s slate of fake electors and their enablers, including two Arizona Republican Congressmen.  She may soon be ready to make her move.  My favorite part of the article below is one of the headlines.

Fake elector says Mayes ‘weaponizing our justice system’

So sad!

(azcentral)  Attorney General Kris Mayes again said her investigation of the Republican electors who falsely claimed Donald Trump won Arizona in 2020 would wrap up “very soon” as new details came to light about the broadening reach of the probe.

“As I’ve said all along, we are engaged in a very serious, very professional investigation into what happened with the fake electors,” Mayes told reporters on Thursday following a news conference on a different topic. “I’m not ready to stand before you here today and announce anything, but we will have something for you on that front very soon.”

Odious Congressman Andy Bigg and Paul Gosar are also in the AG’s crosshairs for their role in the state’s fake elector scheme.  AG Mayes subpoenaed both Congressmen to testify before the grand jury, although that doesn’t necessarily mean she will bring charges against them.  Yet.

I hope Paul Gosar is as distressed about that as he looks in this photo.  That probably makes me a bad person.  :: shrug ::

Both congressmen were closely tied to the plan to create slates of alternate electors — so-called fake electors — to keep Trump in the White House over the will of voters.

Gosar was outlining his argument for challenging Arizona’s election result when rioters overtook the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Biggs, in text messages to Trump aide Mark Meadows three days after the election, said in “states where there’s been shenanigans” he should submit alternate electors for Trump and have Republican-led legislatures formally support him.

Paul Gosar, you may recall, is in a competition with RFK Jr. to see how many family members will disavow their candidacy.

The Biden-Harris campaign is not your father’s Oldsmobile is not like any presidential campaign I’ve ever seen before, and I am totally here for it.  Loved the Rogues’ Gallery, and this followed right below it.

Take a minute and listen to these short clips from the Biden-Harris Comms Director.  Holy shit, he is good.

Biden-Harris Comms Director Michael Tyler: I’m not sure what scripture Trump is reading, I’ve read Matthew 5, nowhere does it say, blessed are the bullies and the hateful. Biden-Harris Campaign Creates Rogues’ Gallery of Trump-Humping Billionaires

Revision note: Guys, the Thread embeds I used in the original version of this post made the mobile version go haywire, so I had to pull the post and replace the embeds with images. That made all the comments go away. I’m so sorry about that! ETA: Annnd, it looks like the comments are back. Emily Latila voice: never mind!

Donald Trump’s campaign reported a record $50.5M haul from a fundraising event held in Florida yesterday: (CNN)

The Trump total from the “Inaugural Leadership Dinner” at the Palm Beach, Florida, home of billionaire investor John Paulson sets a record for a single fundraising event.

“It’s clearer than ever that we have the message, the operation, and the money to propel President Trump to victory on November 5,” Trump campaign senior advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said in a statement.

Wiles and LaCivita are pros, so a step up from the caddy-and-cabana-boy crew that ran Trump’s 2016 operation. Personally, I think it’s a mistake for campaigns to announce gaudy fundraising hauls, which the Biden-Harris campaign does too sometimes.

I get why they do it — it’s a sign of strength. But the money sloshing around in our politics is nothing to be proud of, and I suspect I’m not the only voter who finds the entire thing grotesque.

It’s especially gross if you’re Don Poorleone rattling the begging bowl at fellow corrupt fat cats. In that case, bragging about the haul gives opponents an opening for, well, what the Biden-Harris campaign account on Threads did last night:

Sunday Morning Open Thread: Always Look on the Bright Side of Life…

This post is in: Cat Blogging, Something Good Open Thread

I am gritting my teeth, determined to stay positive, no matter the challenge. The Spousal Unit is currently sulking because — against all earlier predictions — looks like it’s gonna be a lovely sunny Monday in Burlington, Vermont, for the total eclipse. (He didn’t get the round tuit on reserving a hotel room.) Here north of Boston, we’re only supposed to get 93% of totality, which seems like plenty enough to me, but I’m not the astronomy buff in this household…

A new declaration in Mexico gives 19 cats roaming the presidential palace food and care fur-ever https://t.co/rC4s8rv7Pw

— The Associated Press (@AP) April 7, 2024

… Nineteen feral cats have free rein of Mexico’s National Palace, long roaming the lush gardens and historic colonial halls of the most iconic buildings in the country.

“They have access to every part of the palace, so they walk in on meetings, interviews and wander onto camera,” said Jesús Arias, the palace veterinarian, as a handful of feline friends brush against his ankles.

Now, the palace cats have made hiss-tory after the government of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador declared them to be “living fixed assets,” the first animals in Mexico to receive the title.

“The cats are now a symbol of the National Palace. Just as we understand this world, I wouldn’t understand the National Palace without the presence of these cats,” said Adriana Castillo Román, general director of the National Palace and Cultural Heritage Conservancy. “We have to make sure the cats are taken care of.”…

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Spontaneous Spring Flowers… & A Question

by Anne Laurie|  April 7, 20245:47 am| 45 Comments

This post is in: Garden Chats

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: A Question 1

From commentor / aspiring native gardener JAM:

A passion flower vine came up in my sunny pollinator bed last summer. I think it is passiflora incarnata which is an aggressive spreading native vine beloved by butterflies. I really want to keep it, but I don’t want it to spread out of control.

I found a website that suggest burying an 18-24 inch barrier around the roots to prevent rhizomes from spreading. Other gardeners say to just pull up the rhizomes, it’s no big deal. So I would welcome any advice from BJers who have grown this plant.

For more context, this is in a long South facing bed along a fence, bracketed at each end with hibiscus moscheutos, and a lot of rather weedy self seeding annuals and perennials in between. I can go on the neighbor’s side to weed if needed, it is all lawn. The annuals are not native, and I would like to replace them with natives eventually. (Except for the old-fashioned petunias. They came with the house and they get to stay.)

========

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: A Question 2

I don’t have many flowers blooming in my garden right now, so I thought I’d send you some nice weeds. I’m just starting out gardening with native plants, so I’ve been trying to identify the weeds that are native. I live in the Cross Timbers eco-region in Oklahoma, a belt of Blackjack / post oak forests which forms a boundary between the eastern woods and tallgrass prairies and the western shortgrass prairies.

Above: Spring beauty (claytonia virginica) blankets Eastern woodlands and lawns in the spring. Unfortunately, my lawn has been sprayed, so my spring beauties grow in clumps–but look at my neighbor’s back yard. The spring beauty bee feeds her underground brood the pollen of this flower only. They are also called fairy spuds because the corms are edible and supposedly tasty.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Spontaneous Spring Flowers, & A Question 2

Bluets (Houstonia caerulea) growing in my other neighbor’s backyard. Weirdly, his back yard is full of bluets, but no spring beauties at all. They are too small to see in a lawn-wide view.
