Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

How stupid are these people?

“woke” is the new caravan.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

People are complicated. Love is not.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

You cannot shame the shameless.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Saturday Night Open Thread

Republicans keep outweirding each other:

Tim Sheehy, a charismatic former Navy SEAL who is the Republican candidate in a U.S. Senate race in Montana that could determine control of the chamber, has cited a gunshot wound he received in combat that he said left a bullet in his right arm as evidence of his toughness.

“I got thick skin — though it’s not thick enough. I have a bullet stuck in this arm still from Afghanistan,” Sheehy said in a video of a December campaign event posted on social media, pointing to his right forearm.

It was one of several inconsistent accounts Sheehy has shared about being shot while deployed. And in October 2015, more than a year after he left active duty, he told a different story.

After a family visit to Montana’s Glacier National Park, he told a National Park Service ranger that he accidentally shot himself in the right arm that day when his Colt .45 revolver fell and discharged while he was loading his vehicle in the park, according to a record of the episode filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Montana.

I have no idea what really happened, and he has told so many lies about it I never will be fully confident in any version. Only two things are certain- there is a bullet in his arm, and he is a liar. As he is a Republican, you already knew the latter.

Had a fun day today. Breyana and I went up to costco, did a little shopping. I got the biggest jar of pickles I have ever seen, and I will eat every last one of them. It was fun spending some time with the kid. She’s very good company.

I have become completely sucked into Black Sails on Starz, so I am going to wrap this up. Be good to each other.

War for Ukraine Day 773: This Morning’s Butcher’s Bill from Kharkiv

Art by NEIVANMADE of a Ukrainian painted black and outlined in blood red kneeling in grief with hands covering the face surrounded by the bodies of Ukrainians killed by Russians on a grey background. "Russia Is Committing Genocide Right Now" is across the top center of the image.

As was the case when I started typing the update last night, right now – 6:00 PM EDT – only the eastern half of Ukraine is under air raid alert. Unfortunately, that didn’t last and all of Ukraine was under air raid alert last night/this morning.

Kharkiv is already being targeted again!

Explosion reported in Kharkiv! https://t.co/Z7U6tayonq

Odesa too!

Here’s the butcher’s bill from Russia’s overnight attack on Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia:

Tonight Russia launched 32 drones and six missiles of various types over Ukraine: three S-300, two Kh-101/Kh-555 and one Kalibr. Air defense forces destroyed two Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles, Kalibr and 28 drones. pic.twitter.com/orAI401Aj4

— Maria Avdeeva (@maria_avdv) April 6, 2024

The S-300s and four of the drones got through.

Yet another massive Russian missile attack on Ukraine last night.

◾️In Kharkiv, 6 people dead and 10 injured. Drones hit a residential area – at least 9 apartments buildings, three dorms, administrative building, vehicles, etc. are damaged.

◾️In Zaporizhzhia, 4 people dead… pic.twitter.com/NYEC9H7s1x

◾️In Zaporizhzhia, 4 people dead and 23 wounded. At least five Russian missiles were targeted at Zaporizhzhia.

◾️In total, Ukrainian defense shot down 28 Russian drones and 3 cruise missiles. Air defense worked in several regions of Ukraine.

These horrible numbers are becoming a mundane reality. We need air defense systems to stop these murders of innocent people.

GOP Venality Open Thread: In the Fallen Warlord’s Court: Purging Disloyalty / Rewarding Fealty

by Anne Laurie|  April 6, 20246:18 pm| 91 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Republican Venality, Trump Crime Cartel, Riveted By The Sociological Significance Of It All

This is insane even for a Trumpian RNC. It means that everyone in the place — every researcher, lawyer, fundraiser, receptionist — is an avowed election denier. How does the Committee ever recover from this?

Maybe the answer is it shouldn’t.https://t.co/qiQeguUh6a

— Marc E. Elias (@marceelias) March 27, 2024

The warlord has been driven into exile, at the moment, but he — and more importantly his backers — still hope to regain control of his former empire. While they regroup for the next battle, the ‘impure’ are purged, and the hoped-for future satrapies are divided…

I owe someone a hat tip for this gift link. Josh Dawsey, at the Washington Post — “Was the 2020 election stolen? Job interviews at RNC take an unusual turn”:

… In recent days, Trump advisers have quizzed multiple employees who had worked in key 2024 states — and who are reapplying for jobs — about their views on the last presidential election, according to people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private interviews and discussions. The interviews have been conducted mostly virtually, as the applicants are based in key swing states.

“Was the 2020 election stolen?” one prospective employee recalled being asked in a room with two top Trump advisers.

The query about the 2020 election startled some of the potential employees, who viewed it as questioning their loyalty to Trump and as an unusual job interview question, according to the people familiar with the interviews. A group of senior Trump advisers has been in the RNC building in recent days conducting the interviews…

President Biden’s reelection campaign on Wednesday sharply criticized the RNC’s practice of asking prospective employees whether the 2020 election was stolen.

“In Donald Trump’s America, elections are only fair when he wins and nothing is off the table to stay in power — including violence like on January 6th and being a dictator on day one,” Biden spokesperson Ammar Moussa said in a statement. “And, now, Donald Trump is demanding fealty to his extreme, anti-democratic beliefs to be part of his Republican Party.”

Instead of having employees based in Washington, Trump advisers have told prospective employees that many will be expected to move to Palm Beach, Fla., to be near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club, hollowing out the RNC headquarters. RNC officials have said it is about combining the operations of the campaign and the committee for maximum use ahead of the general election…

This is great news for the media’s horse-race touts! Tina Nguyen, at Puck — “Trump’s Transition Circus Heads to Palm Beach”:

The polling and prediction markets may show Joe Biden and Donald Trump in a statistical dead heat, but fortune favors the drape-measurers, and for Trump allies and hangers-on eying roles in a putative Trump II administration, the jockeying has begun. As I reported in October, there are currently two dueling conservative groups working to staff the next Trump regime: Project 2025, spearheaded by the storied Heritage Foundation, with the participation of every right-wing organization under the sun (the Tea Party Patriots, Stephen Miller’s legal firm, Moms for Liberty, etcetera); and the America First Policy Institute’s Transition Project, featuring a who’s who of Trump has-beens (Kellyanne Conway, Hogan Gidley, Larry Kudlow, Pam Bondi, etcetera etcetera). Both organizations, each obviously headquartered in Washington, D.C., are focused on vetting the next generation of Trump-aligned foot soldiers to parachute into federal agencies on Day One.

But the real action of staffing a Trump White House will be occurring closer to Trump himself. Presidential candidates typically establish transition teams in Washington, where they are separate from the campaign, and where staffers can meet and evaluate the thousands of potential employees required to run the federal government. Trump, however, plans to establish his transition directly from the comfort of Mar-a-Lago, according to three people in the know. Also unlike previous transition teams, I’m told, staffers on the committee will have direct access to Trump, too. As a result, whomever ultimately chairs the group is more likely to be a gatekeeper than a true decision-maker—though gatekeeping is a tall order given the fates of his four White House chiefs of staff. “They’ve learned nothing,” sighed a former Trump administration official, predicting more 2016-style mayhem.

Arizona and Nevada: Can We Get Halfway There Today?

by WaterGirl|  April 6, 20244:07 pm| 55 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Political Fundraising, Targeted Political Fundraising 2023-24

Do you guys remember Kris Mayes, the candidate for Attorney General in Arizona?  She was one the candidates we supported in our “election protection” thermometer in 2022, and she won.

Well, yesterday she subpoenaed Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar as part of her fake electors investigation.  I’ll have more details on that in a post tomorrow, but you can bet that if her opponent had won, there wouldn’t be an investigation.

All these folks we supported in 2022 are the gifts that keep on giving, and I’d love for us to get some more great people elected in 2024.

We have an external match and we still have Balloon Juice Angels for both Arizona and Nevada, which means that anything you donate up to $50 will turn into 4x the amount you donate.

To count toward the match, let us know about your donation in the comments, or you can drop me an email message if you prefer.  Let me know which state or state in the comments.

I need a distraction as I have to work today AND it’s gloomy outside, so no gardening and maybe just a short walk for the pups. I could use a fun thread.

How about we talk about our pets. Who lives with you now? How did they come to you? Are they in the calendar and if so, what month?

Right now, sharing my house are:

Because good news never goes viral on here: the final Friday prayers this Ramadan passed peacefully in Jerusalem. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims worshipped at Al-Aqsa over the course of the month. Late Night Open Thread: Chris Christie, Again

by Anne Laurie|  April 6, 20242:58 am| 107 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Excellent Links, Republicans in Disarray!, Our Failed Media Experiment

Chris Christie on Trump: “He doesn't care about the American people. he's putting himself first…This next administration of Donald Trump as president will be all about retribution for him personally, is that the show we want to watch?” pic.twitter.com/KbVoBul0SQ

— Republicans against Trump (@RpsAgainstTrump) April 4, 2024

Chris Christie — and he would probably admit this, cheerfully, on camera — is an attention whore. I’m glad he’s (back to) calling out the man he once hoped would make him vice president; I’m even gladder he turned down No Labels when it might have encouraged those grifters to keep sucking up media attention.

On the other hand, he’s yet to earn a Profiles in Courage award. His apostasy makes a tingle run up the leg of Politico race-horse tout Jonathan Martin, but the answer to the question “Why Hasn’t Biden Called Chris Christie?” is that it’s only April, and that means we’ve got five or six more months of Christie grandstanding to come.

A much better argument, from Tom Moran at the Star-Ledger — “Will Christie vote for Biden? Logic demands it”:

… If you believe, as Christie does, that Trump is an unhinged maniac with a knife at the throat of American democracy, then why not swallow hard and vote for Biden?…

When Christie left the race in January, he vowed that he would never vote for Trump “under any circumstances.” But he added that, “I can’t see myself voting for President Biden, either.”

And so, he joins other refugees from Trump world, like former Vice President Mike Pence, who can’t bring themselves to support Biden. Also in that camp are Sen. Mitt Romney, the GOP’s presidential nominee in 2012, William Barr, the former attorney general, Mark Esper, the former defense secretary, and of course, former Rep. Liz Cheney, the unlikely heroine of this era.

The problem with their middle ground is simple math: If they want to stop Trump, a Biden vote is worth twice as much as a protest vote…

If you put Christie’s statements under a microscope, you can find reasons to hope he will come around and endorse Biden, as former Gov. Christie Whitman did in 2020. He ruled out voting for Trump absolutely; but he stopped shy of that on Biden, saying that he “can’t see” it right now.

Maybe he just needs time to move this decision from his heart to his head.

That, finally, would clear him of culpability in creating this national nightmare. He was, remember, the first major Republican to endorse Trump in 2016. And he stuck with him during the entire first term, even after Trump talked about the “fine people” in the KKK, after he spread his poisonous nonsense during the pandemic, after he blackmailed Ukraine to dig up dirt on Biden. He helped Trump prepare for the 2020 debates with Biden.

Christie saw the light on election night, when he declared Biden the legitimate winner on national TV. He broke cleanly from Trump after Jan. 6, and ran for president against Trump with the determination of a kamikaze pilot.

So, his place in the history books is not yet settled. A Biden endorsement just might tip the balance in his favor.

Dear Chris Christie
You made the right move turning down No Labels. You're on roll. Don't stop now. It's time to say his name…. it's Joe Biden. It'll feel great, I promise. Join us. pic.twitter.com/ZCybENduz4
