Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Their shamelessness is their super power.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

The National Guard is not Batman.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

The Tariffs

Auto Draft 121

There was a lot of noise made yesterday by Trump’s threat to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada for reasons of fentanyl and blah blah blah (not an exact quote).

So there are a number of possibilities:

  1. A fucking liar does something that he says he’s going to do, exactly how he’s going to do it.  That would be a first, prices go way up, and people go apeshit about $6 avocados and $3 tomatoes.
  2. Like a kid touching a stove, he tries a tariff or two, his donors/advisors go apeshit, and he backs off immediately.
  3. He doesn’t do it at all, but picks on some minor concessions from Canada and Mexico and says “look how my primo negotiation skills got us something for nothing”.

My vote is for 3, but are any of the above really horrible?  Mass deportations with concentration camps is horrible.  Women bleeding out in parking lots because doctors are afraid to provide life saving care is horrible.  Violence against trans people sparked by the climate of hate is horrible.  Higher prices suck but they don’t (directly) make people bleed or die.

Part of my reason that I think (3) will happen is that a little information about the problem with tariffs has apparently penetrated the low-information ecosystem and 2/3 of those surveyed in a recent poll think that tariffs will raise prices.

Anyway, it might be the media I consume (which is probably similar to what all of you consume), but I had forgotten how good Trump is at working the media dials by just shitting out some new outrageous claim every day, even though most of what he says will never happen.  People immediately dive in on the illegality of Trump doing this (since it violates USMCA (the new NAFTA), that he’ll have to declare a state of emergency, etc.   And here I am contributing to it, I guess, though my actual feeling is more like Wonka’s attitude in the image above.  I’m still searching for a way to be less reactive to his bullshit but also noting it.  Any recommendations that aren’t just tuning out/giving up would be welcome.

Okay Boomers — how does this WORK?

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance

As the baby boom generation enters its prime years for long-term care needs, its difficult to come up with a more challenging backdrop than an immigration system about to be cut off at its knees (think: nursing home aides) and states having to fill in funding gaps from Medicaid spending shortfalls.

I’m not sure how to get even more bummed this morning then trying to think through this problem.

President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, on Monday opened their final holiday season at the White House with the annual turkey pardons and Christmas tree arrival before they hosted “friendsgiving” in New York City for U.S. Coast Guard members and their families.

“Simply put, we owe you. We owe your families,” Biden said at U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York on Staten Island. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

The meal was part of the first lady’s Joining Forces initiative to support military families. “With all my heart, thank you for your service and your sacrifice,” she said before the president spoke.

Both then tied dark aprons with the presidential seal around their dress clothes and joined the chow line, where they served a side dish of roasted Brussels sprouts. Celebrity chef Robert Irvine helped with the menu of turkey, ham, side dishes and desserts…

On The Road – David_C – Buffalo, NY: The Queen City

David_C

Hi everyone! I’m back with another mundane group of photos, this time from that famous vacation destination, my home town, Buffalo, NY, the Queen City of New York State. Our own Betty Cracker and hubby Bill are certainly aware of its charms, but, like other Rust Belt cities, it gets a bad rap and has gone through some rough times. This is about the good that is attracting new interest.

On The Road - David_C - Buffalo, NY: The Queen City 7
Canalside , Buffalo, NYJuly 22, 2017

We begin at the Buffalo harbor, looking out towards Lake Erie and the Niagara River. This used to be an area of parking lots and washed-up trash, but now is a destination called Canalside. There are hotels, bars, tours, and events, and of course, the waterfront for boating, biking, and strolling.

A Lovely Tribute to His Dog Cody, by BretH

Sometimes people share notes about their pets when they submit their guys for the pet calendar.  This one today had me in tears, such a lovely tribute to a beloved dog.  I don’t think BretH will mind my sharing it.

A Lovely Tribute

Pets of Ballon Juice 2025

About Cody

First, I think a heart next to Cody’s name would be great as he loved everyone and was loved by everyone.

Cody has been the Neighborhood Dog for years now. He would hang out in the yard and jump up on the low fence whenever anyone came by for pets and scratches (and the occasional treat).

Eventually people planned their walks to come by our yard in case Cody was outside – and more than once we were asked if we would let him out for people. I had actually contemplated adding a little doorbell by the gate. His huge heart truly touched everyone he met.

When Cody passed I made a little sign for the yard letting people know. We now have flowers and cards, some made by little children, letting us know how much he was loved and how much he will be missed. (I will attach a copy of the notice).

Cody turned 11 this year and while we didn’t think we were ready for another puppy (moving, life, etc), when the breeder we got Cody from offered us a puppy we didn’t hesitate. We felt he could use some young energy and we also know that at some point he would need to leave us.

So Rosie came into our lives, joyous, bouncy and cheerful, and immediately attached herself to Cody. She did indeed put a spring in his step and he in turn taught her it is OK to chill out every now and then.

Thanks for putting the calendars together!!

Not much to report other than that dad is in the hospital- had some afib and they are keeping him and monitoring him. That is literally all I know so don’t bother asking for more info. I called and talked to him and informed him that under no circumstance is he allowed to do anything stupid like die, because I just got settled here and my anxiety is under control, and he agreed to behave, so that’s that.

Today I learned that these idiots can spread bird flu through raw milk, so now I can’t just sit back and let the fuckers drink it and shit blood. So that sucks. Really looking forward of spending the rest of my adult life trying to get morons to not do self-destructive shit. We saw how well that went with covid.

Rosie is doing great. Thank you all for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations to help cover her chemo.

Russia started the day with glide bombs over Kharkiv:

Kharkiv woke today to the sound of destruction – a russian missile struck the city center, injuring 19 civilians and damaging dozens of buildings, including an administrative hub.
