President Zelenskyy visited the site of the Russian strike on the civilian apartment building to pay his respects today.

President Honors the Memory of Those Killed at the Site of the Russian Strike on a Nine-Story Residential Building in Kyiv

1 August 2025 – 22:59

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored the memory of those killed at the site of the Russian strike on a nine-story residential building in Kyiv’s Sviatoshynskyi district.

On the night of July 31, Russia destroyed an entire section of the building. The attack claimed the lives of 28 residents, including five children, and injured 21 people.

The President laid flowers at the destroyed section and spoke with residents of the building, who are now in need of assistance.

“We will help you all. Tomorrow, ministers will meet and quickly adopt decisions to support you. I don’t want to burden you with bureaucracy right now. They’ve already prepared everything needed to ensure you receive the money and understand where you’ll be living – so that everything is clear,” the Head of State said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked everyone who worked at the site – those who responded to the aftermath, helped people, rescued victims, and cleared the rubble.

Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko informed the Head of State that 216 personnel and 54 units of State Emergency Service equipment had been involved in the response at this site alone. Search and rescue operations were completed only this morning.

According to him, 470 house residents have filed reports about lost or damaged property.

In total, during this massive attack on Kyiv, Russia killed 31 people and injured 179.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video followed by the English transcript.

It Is Very Important That the Prospect of New Sanctions Has Now Begun to Put Pressure on Russia – Address by the President

1 August 2025 – 20:19

Dear Ukrainians!

Today, the search operations at the site of the Russian strike on Kyiv have concluded – a regular residential building, a direct hit. The missile killed 28 people. In total, the city suffered 31 fatalities from that strike, including 5 children. Children born in 2007, 2011, 2014, 2018, and even 2022. My condolences to the families and loved ones. This was one of the most brutal Russian strikes on Kyiv. One hundred fifty-nine people were injured. Ordinary buildings, enterprises, and even one of Kyiv’s mosques were hit. There was no military purpose at all. Many around the world have supported Ukraine, many have condemned Russian terror, their strikes, and their Russian refusal to end the war. Ceasefire proposals have been made long ago – Ukrainian proposals, U.S. proposals, and many others around the world have communicated this to the Russians. Each time, the only response from there has been attempts to gain more time for war, more time for terror. Russia does not operate otherwise. So it is very important that the prospect of new sanctions, strong sanctions, has now begun to put pressure on Russia – and not only against the aggressor state itself. All Russian finances, every scheme that fills the Russian budget, must be targeted by the world. Only this will convince Moscow to genuinely work for peace. Ukraine is grateful to the United States, grateful to Europe, and all our other friends around the world who strive for peace. Ukraine is ready to work as swiftly as possible for the sake of peace. We all clearly understand what steps are needed. We understand who calls the shots in Russia, and thus Ukraine is once again offering to move beyond technical talks – not to exchange statements, but to actually meet at the level of leaders. I want to thank President Trump for his readiness for such a meeting. I am grateful to everyone who has supported this. Russia’s readiness is needed. The Head of the Office, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs will continue communication with our partners on this matter. Today, I spoke with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, including about such diplomatic efforts, about contacts with our partners. I am grateful to the United Kingdom for their readiness to assist. Of course, it is important that we can count on further defense support and political cooperation.

There were reports today from our government officials: Yuliia Svyrydenko, the Ministers of Defense, Economy, and Finance. We discussed our work with partners – decisions we are making and financial matters. We are ensuring all aspects of resilience for our country as needed. The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported on the elimination of the aftermath of Russian strikes.

Also today, I held a session summarizing the results of a meeting with our people who were released from Russian captivity. That meeting took place on Monday. It was very-very substantive; many issues were raised: post-captivity rehabilitation, guarantee of all rights, restoration of documents, and social reintegration. A very sensitive matter is the return of civilians from captivity. Andriy Yermak reported on decisions already developed by our Coordination Headquarters, those that are already being implemented. A bill is also being drafted that ensures protection and proper recovery after captivity. It concerns illnesses acquired during captivity. Therefore, it is only fair that assistance be equivalent to that provided for illnesses acquired while serving in the Defense Forces. Ihor Klymenko reported on the rehabilitation of former prisoners. Kyrylo Budanov reported on preparations for new exchanges – I hope that all of this will be successful and that we will implement it all. I thank everyone who cares about Ukraine, all who work and all who fight for our state.

Glory to Ukraine!

Trump claims nearly 20,000 Russian soldiers died in Ukraine this month, bringing total Russian losses since January to 112,500. He puts Ukrainian losses at about 8,000 troops in 2025, not counting the missing.

— WarTranslated (Dmitri) (@wartranslated.bsky.social) August 1, 2025 at 12:18 PM

I find it quite amusing that people who claim Trump lies about everything and isn’t trustworthy suddenly treat him as a reliable and truthful source, as soon as he announces casualty figures that sound favorable for Ukraine.
So he’s lying… until he says something you like to hear, right?😆

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) August 1, 2025 at 8:28 PM

The whole point of having these submarines is to create strategic ambiguity about where they are and what they might or might not be doing at any given time.

Ukraine’s air defenses achieved an 87% interception rate in July, downing 5,702 out of 6,529 Russian aerial targets, Ukrainian analysts report via the Military Journal Telegram channel.

Russia set a new monthly record for drone launches—16% higher than in March—while cruise missile activity remained steady at 116 launches.

Analysts note that as the number of attacks grows, so does the absolute number of targets getting through, even with high air defense effectiveness.

As of 16:00, Ukraine’s Defense Forces report 70 combat clashes today. Russian attacks continue across the front, with heavy fighting near Pokrovsk, Lyman, and Kupyansk. Border communities in Sumy and Kharkiv regions came under fire.

I am not interested in fighting with one hand tied behind my back, so I love seeing a response like this.

Republicans count on us playing by the rules.  The old rules, from the time when comity was a thing. The time for that is long gone.  More of this, please.

What we could’ve had…

If you can’t bear to watch the whole thing, I’d at least watch (or read the transcript at the YouTube site) starting at approximately the 23min mark:

“… Stephen, what I did not predict was the capitulation. I didn’t… People would roll over for this president. I didn’t see that coming… I — and perhaps it’s naive of me someone who has seen a lot that most people haven’t seen but I believed that on some level, you know, there are many — there should be many who consider themselves to be guardians of our system and our democracy who just capitulated… “

The Trump Economy Sucks

Don’t worry — they quickly pivoted to a not-Trump culprit: Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Looks like Trump may get his wish and drive the Epstein scandal out of the daily news cycle by, um, crashing the economy.

I’m no economist (and am in fact barely numerate). But I suspect the problem with the economy is that a sundowning old coot is unilaterally and illegally threatening, applying, retracting and reapplying tariffs.

Businesses find it hard to plan in this environment, so they curtail hiring, which suppresses wage growth. Already-strapped consumers are dealing with rising prices because sellers pass the tariff tax on to buyers. Maybe it’s that simple?

Ballroom Blitz (Open Thread)

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity, Assholes, General Stupidity

Optional musical accompaniment for the following post:

John covered Trump’s plan to build a tacky, golden ballroom onto the White House in last night’s open thread, but goddamn, look at this hideous and cheap imitation of the Winter Palace! It looks like an ad from Crazy Liberace’s Discount Gold Flock Warehouse.

Tacky gold ballroom

In a White House statement that is equal parts self-congratulatory and defensive, Trump’s incompetent flaks note that the current arrangement is unacceptable because large gatherings require erecting an “unsightly tent” located “approximately 100 yards away from the main building entrance.”

Translation: this exceeds Trump’s maximum waddling distance, so he has to be transported there by golf cart, which is embarrassing.

President Trump, and other patriot donors, have generously committed to donating the funds necessary to build this approximately $200 million dollar structure. The United States Secret Service will provide the necessary security enhancements and modifications.

I guaran-damn-tee y’all this is a grift-o-rama, just like the Qatari “gift” plane, for which the Trump administration stole nearly a billion dollars that were set aside to secure our aging nuclear missile silos, all to make sure Donald Trump can shit in a golden toilet at 30K feet.

The White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles said the following: “President Trump is a builder at heart and has an extraordinary eye for detail. The President and the Trump White House are fully committed to working with the appropriate organizations to preserving the special history of the White House while building a beautiful ballroom that can be enjoyed by future Administrations and generations of Americans to come.”

More bullshit. Trump is a fucking CROOK at heart, Suze, and you know it. (An aside: I look forward to Wiles’ eventual tell-all — hopefully authored from a minimum security Club Fed facility — after the fascist Trump regime reaches its inevitable sticky end. Wiles is evil but not stupid.)
