Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Here’s the Cincinnati Enquirer’s fact check on JD.  No, he didn’t say he fucked a couch in Hillbilly Elegy.  Yes, he posted about dolphin porn with a twitter post showing he searched for “dolphin” and “women”.  Yeah, he had some Trump critics  on his Venmo, but that could be because he told Venmo to import his contacts.

Then we get to the eyeliner.  Here’s a TikTok user who thinks he wears it.  Pretty convincing.  The Enquirer isn’t sure about this one.

Just to be clear, there’s nothing wrong with wearing eyeliner, if you’re a man, as long as you own it. I think we need to spend a lot more time on this important issue, so here’s a thread to discuss it.

Also, if you think I’m being mean to JD, then you can read this story about how he accused Walz of “stolen valor” because Walz chose to retire after 24 years in the National Guard to run for office, before Walz’ unit was deployed to Iraq.  JD was a press officer for the Marines, served for 4 years and, he admits, saw no real fighting.

One of our (mostly) lurkers sent this to me.  Not the video, but the poem below. It’s pretty good!

(I do love it when our lurkers get involved in things.)

by Just Suze

You’re a mean one, Mr. Vance,
You really are a heel,
You’re as cuddly as a cactus, you’re as charming as an eel, Mr.Vance,
You’re a bad banana with a greasy black peel!

You’re a monster, Mr. Vance,
Your heart’s an empty hole,
Your brain is full of spiders, you have garlic in your soul, Mr. Vance,
I wouldn’t touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!

You’re a foul one, Mr. Vance,
You have termites in your smile,
You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile, Mr. Vance,
Given a choice between the two of you I’d take the seasick crocodile!

You’re a vile one, Mr. Vance,
You’re a nasty wasty skunk,
Your heart is full of unwashed socks, your soul is full of gunk, Mr. Vance,
The three words that best describe you are as follows, and I quote,
“Stink, stank, stunk”!

You’re a rotter, Mr. Vance,
You’re the king of sinful sots,
Your heart’s a dead tomato splotched with moldy purple spots, Mr. Vance,
Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful
Assortment of rubbish imaginable mangled up in tangled up knots!

You nauseate me, Mr. Vance,
With a nauseous super “naus”!
You’re a crooked dirty jockey and you drive a crooked hoss, Mr. Vance,
You’re a three decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce!

I’d like to challenge some of our creative peeps – anybody have an ode to Biden, an ode to Kamala, an ode to Walz in there, just waiting to get out?  Ode is too high a bar?  How about a poem, a rhyme, a limerick.  There are so many words that rhyme with couch, am I right?  Positivity and mockery, as long as they are directed at the right people, are both welcome.

You can put them in the comments, or you can send them to me by email.  I’ll include the best of them in upcoming posts.

Otherwise, this is an open thread.

The Incel/Stalker Campaign Strategy

The Incel/Stalker Campaign Strategy
Amanda Marcotte went to both the Harris/Walz rally and the Vance rally in Philly last night, and let’s just say that the chicken man got blown up:

The chanters [saying “He’s so weird”] didn’t know the half of it. Hours earlier, I had been at a South Philly venue where Vance spoke briefly to about 200 supporters and a group of bored journalists. Vance’s event was small, mean, and yes, weird, featuring the unjustified sarcasm of the candidate and a desperate feeling reminiscent of the mood at a strip mall shot bar at 2 AM on “ladies’ night.”

Meanwhile, the Harris/Walz rally felt like a rousing speech by Coach Eric Taylor of “Friday Night Lights” combined with the front row at Coachella. The cheers were so loud that I regretted not bringing my earplugs. The mood was jubilant, even though folks had to wait hours in the heat and humidity to even get into the place. The campaign claimed over 12,000 people showed up, which is not an exaggeration. Even as Harris and Walz gave the final speeches of the evening, the line to get into the overflow room — just to watch the event on TV — went on for multiple city blocks.

[…]Vance’s speech, on the other hand, wasn’t just underwhelming but a little uncanny. Despite using room dividers to shrink the space, the campaign could not hide that the crowd felt like a medium-sized wedding, albeit a pathetic one where no one cares for the couple. Vance, perhaps recognizing charisma isn’t his strong suit, spoke briefly before bringing up a series of local citizens ready to blame Mexicans for their familial tragedies of drug addiction. He spoke for a couple more minutes, before taking the reporters’ questions about cat ladies.

Even in his short speech, it seemed Vance — like the Trump campaign overall — is still struggling to accept that they are running against Harris and not President Joe Biden. It felt like the speechwriter had typed Ctrl-F “Biden” and replaced every instance with “Harris,” whether it made sense or not. […]

I saw a clip of JD answering a reporter’s question about Trump doing one event this week, versus the heavy schedule that Harris and Walz are running. Vance said that Trump is very busy, and mumbled something about raising funds. Yeah, that’s right, JD — your campaign doesn’t have any fucking money because Trump stole it all. Trump doesn’t have a public schedule because their genius plan was to glide to victory over Biden.

Most importantly, they have no strategy. It’s neither strategically or tactically smart to have Vance chase Harris and Walz. Obviously, Harris/Walz were going to have a bigger crowd and more attention than JD in Philly, but even at that, what a weak effort by the Trump/Vance campaign to only get 200 incels to show up.  They also fucked up their sign placement (as shown above), but the “Kamala Chaos” message on the sign is just more of them repeating back the charges made by the Harris campaign instead of coming up with anything new or clever.

Tim Walz said “we’ll sleep when we’re dead” in Philly. The Trump/Vance campaign, at the moment, is just asleep.

Also, I have a correction to make to yesterday’s “Tampon Tim” post. I just assumed that the Minnesota law about menstrual supplies mandated that they were to be supplied in both bathrooms. That’s right-wing lie. Robyn Pennachia at Wonkette has the facts:

But the narrative the Right is putting out is that the bill “requires” schools to put tampons in the boys’ restroom. It does not. It doesn’t require them to be in any particular place, actually.

Here is the whole text of the bill:

A school district or charter school must provide students with access to menstrual products at no charge. The products must be available to all menstruating students in restrooms regularly used by students in grades 4 to 12 according to a plan developed by the school district. For purposes of this section, “menstrual products” means pads, tampons, or other similar products used in connection with the menstrual cycle.

So, sorry about the error and I hope that I’ll remember in future to vet their bullshit better.

Harris-Walz v. Trump-Vance: It's now an expanded battle for both the Sun Belt and Rust Belt https://t.co/QwOh7JN9ds

— The Associated Press (@AP) August 7, 2024

… With her choice of a Midwestern governor as a running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris pushed to shore up “Blue Wall” states — Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania — that Democrats need to win to keep the White House. Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, had already signaled that she would also contend in Sun Belt states that increasingly seemed out of reach for President Joe Biden.

Harris, the first Black woman and woman of South Asian descent to head a major party ticket, and former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, will also be locked in Sun Belt competition to win Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and North Carolina, an electoral map that has expanded since Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.

Her ascension and the enthusiasm it generated across racial and generational lines forced mapmakers in both parties to redraw the battle lines of the campaign, Republicans and Democrats agree. Biden’s difficulties — especially among younger voters and nonwhite voters in the Sun Belt — had required him to win all three Blue Wall states and hold off Trump in Democratic-leaning Minnesota to have a chance at an Electoral College majority…

“Black women candidates have a unique ability to build multiracial coalitions,” said Democratic campaign strategist Lauren Groh-Wargo, who managed Stacey Abrams’ two campaigns for Georgia governor. “That’s the opportunity Kamala presents especially in the South and the Sun Belt, which have the most racially and ethnically diverse states of the battlegrounds.”

Chuck Coughlin, a longtime Republican consultant in Arizona, said the switch from Biden to Harris was a jolt in his state and beyond: “Once he stepped aside it was as if you released a torrent of energy.”

The vice president, a California native whom Republicans lambaste as a “San Francisco liberal,” on Tuesday unveiled Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. A 60-year-old Army National Guard veteran, public school teacher and former high school football coach who once represented a wide swath of rural and small-town Minnesota in Congress, Walz adds a distinctive Rust Belt brand to the Democratic ticket…

The upper Midwestern states and Pennsylvania, in general, have slightly older, whiter electorates, and a higher percentage of the population is native-born to the states where they still reside. For example: The Census Bureau measured the U.S. population to be 58.4% non-Hispanic white in 2023, while Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin all exceeded 73%. Arizona was 53.4% while Georgia was 49.6% .

Arizona, meanwhile, is just a tick above the nation’s median age of 38.9, and Georgia’s median is more than a full-year younger. The three Blue Wall states all have medians above 40, highlighting younger voters’ strength in closely divided Sun Belt states…

If this is the actual Chris Rufo, professional liar & school board activist, he’s melting down like the Wicked Witch right now:

War for Ukraine Day 895: For Want of a Nail!!!!!!!

Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is still doing well after her treatment yesterday. Thank you all for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, tonight’s update is going to be terse, grim, and if you don’t want your mellow harshed from today’s domestic to the US news, you may want to pass on by.

As I start drafting tonight’s post – 8:50 PM EDT/3:50 AM local in Ukraine – Sumy and Kharkiv Oblasts in the east and the central/north-central oblasts of Ukraine are under air raid alert with a strike reported in Khmelnitskyi Oblast.

Shortly after I published last night’s update, which was right after the air raid alert in Kharkiv went back up, the Russian’s launched an Iskander barrage at Kharkiv City:

If you’re wondering why this keeps happening, why Ukraine can’t stop it from happening, part of the reason is going to hurt. One part, obviously, is because Putin and the Russian are undertaking a genocidal re-invasion of Ukraine. If Putin can take it Ukraine and Russianize it into the Ruskiy Mir, great. If not, he’ll destroy it, rebuild, and then repopulate it with real ethnic Russians from the Russian metropoles. The other part, however, is that President Biden has appointed the worst, most risk averse senior national security team possible, which has prevented Ukraine from actually using the weapons they’ve been provided from prosecuting legitimate military targets in Russia. Targets, that had they been targeted when Ukraine had the opportunity, would make it much, much, much harder for Russia to carry out its genocidal attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Forbes has the details: (emphasis mine)

For months, Ukrainian officials have been begging their foreign allies for permission to use the best donated weaponry—in particular, powerful ballistic missiles—to hit Russian warplanes that have been parking out in the open at airfields inside Russia within quick flying time of Ukrainian cities.

For months, those allies have demurred, citing the risk of escalation as Russia’s wider war on Ukraine grinds into its 29th month.

Clearly growing impatient, Ukrainian forces have stepped up their attacks on the most vulnerable Russian airfields—strictly deploying Ukrainian-made munitions. On Saturday, Ukrainian drones targeted Morozovsk air base in southern Russia 200 miles from the front line in eastern Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian intelligence directorate, the drone raid destroyed a Russian air force Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber, damaged two additional Su-34s and burned down an ammunition warehouse.

The directorate published satellite imagery of the base depicting what it described as “extensive areas of scorched earth” resulting from the ammo cooking off in the aftermath of the attack.

Since dropping its first crude glide bombs on Ukraine last year, the Russian air force has really embraced the satellite-guided munitions. Thanks to their pop-out wings, the hastily-built “KAB” glide bombs possess just enough range—25 miles or more, depending on the model—to allow Su-34 fighter-bombers to hit Ukrainian troops and civilians from beyond the range of the best Ukrainian air defenses.

Every day, the Russians drop as many as 100 KABs, some weighing more than three tons. “Unfortunately, in urban environments, their large and frequent use is highly effective,” Ukrainian analysis group Frontelligence Insight reported.

“Even though they are often imprecise, the sheer payload is enough to demolish or severely damage buildings, even if the KAB doesn’t hit the target directly,” Frontelligence Insight continued. “When buildings collapse, underground basements trap people inside, making rescue operations impossible, especially when the Russians conduct double and triple-tap attacks.”

As urban demolition weapons, the KABs have been a deciding factor in practically every recent Russian victory all along the 700-mile front line. “In the past, like in the battle for Bakhmut [last year], it sometimes took days for Russian artillery to damage buildings enough to force defenders to retreat,” Frontelligence Insight explained. “Now, entire buildings can collapse in seconds, rendering them useless for defensive purposes.”

It’s a top priority of the government in Kyiv to blunt the glide-bombing campaign by destroying the bombers, the bombs—or both.

There was a rare opportunity to deliver a major blow against the KAB infrastructure earlier this summer, when the Russian air force’s 47th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment parked dozens of Su-34s—out of roughly 100 in service—in open at Voronezh Malshevo air base in southern Russia 100 miles from the border with Ukraine.

Voronezh Malshevo is a reasonably well-defended base, so the Ukrainians pleaded for permission to fire their best American-made Army Tactical Missile System rockets at the base. The ATACMs are almost impossible to intercept.

But the administration of U.S. Pres. Joe Biden said no. “Our policy has not changed,” Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security advisor, told reporters last month. As before, Ukraine would only be allowed to fire ATACMS at targets in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

The Russians observed the heated diplomacy regarding ATACMS—and made a rare proactive decision to pull the Su-34s from Voronezh Malshevo and other border airfields.

“Between the second half of June and mid-July, Russian forces relocated a lion’s [share] of valuable military assets away from the border area with Ukraine,” Frontelligence Insight noted. The departure of Su-34s from Voronezh Malshevo was among “the most notable movements.”

Today many of the Su-34s are at bases hundreds of miles from the border. They’re not invulnerable to Ukrainian drones—the farthest-flying models range more than 1,000 miles.

But they are safe from most Ukrainian drones, as well as from the ATACMS, the most powerful of which range just 190 miles. If the White House ever grants permission for ATACMS raids on Russian bases, it might be too late. The most valuable targets may be too far away.

Obviously, a handful of Su-34s—as well as some stocks of KAB bombs—remain at border airfields such as Morozovsk: Ukraine just hit three of the planes plus their ammo.

But to end the glide-bombing campaign, Ukraine needs to destroy scores of Su-34s—not one or several. And smarter Russian deployments are making that harder to achieve.

For want of a nail!!!

I want to make another point here. The Biden administration has gone all in on an initiative to reduce and mitigate civilian harm. Secretary Austin issued a memo, which was followed by the creation of an action plan and then a DOD instruction. There is a heavy emphasis on protecting civilians. On working with allies and partners to do so. They even set up a Civilian Protection Center of Excellence as directed in the action plan. You know what the Biden administration is not doing? Not doing anything to help protect Ukrainian civilians. It is actively preventing Ukraine from protecting its own civilians. The hypocrisy, strategic malpractice, and risk aversion is overwhelming. We’re not talking about letting Ukraine attack Red Square or the Kremlin or the Winter Palace or even Putin’s mansion in Sochi. We’re talking about legitimate military targets that are targeting and killing Ukrainian civilians every single day! These absolutely unjustifiable decisions aren’t making anyone safer. Not the Ukrainians, not our NATO and EU allies and partners, and not Americans.

For want of a fucking nail!!!

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

In July, Our Warriors Have Used More Drones Than the Occupier – Address by the President

6 August 2024 – 19:03

Dear Ukrainians!

Today, I held a meeting of the Staff. Several issues. The first issue is, of course, the front, the report of the Commander-in-Chief – he took part in the meeting directly from the frontline. He is right there. He reported on all directions of our actions. And the toughest ones are the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions, as well as the Kharkiv region and all other combat directions – we leave none of them neglected. We are doing our best to support our units and destroy the occupier. I thank each of our combat brigades, all the soldiers and commanders who are destroying the enemy with all their might and, in particular, using our drone capabilities with precision. Our Ukrainian Defense and Security Forces are already gaining the upper hand in this regard – and in July, our warriors have used more drones than the occupier. This should be a steady trend at the front – for all types of drones our units have.

From FPVs to all the others, including our long-range drones, which are already having a strategic impact on the war. They are influencing it in Ukraine’s favor. And our Ukrainian lead in drones can not only be the factor that brings a just end to the war, but will also make Ukraine a security provider for other countries. Today, our Government officials from the Ministry of Strategic Industries and the Ministry of Finance also presented reports on drone production and financing. We have already contracted one million drones for this year, and more will follow in total within the year. We are not disclosing all the details now, but our drone production capabilities are steadily increasing, and we are working not only with state funding but also with partners, so that they invest in our drone production. Into something that is helping us defend ourselves now, and in the future, will help to keep safe all those who value life and who are now standing shoulder to shoulder with us. Also today, the Staff adopted a decision on our missile program – to increase funding. And separately, the Minister of Defense reported on the provision of our brigades with weapons and on relevant negotiations with our partners. I am grateful to all in the world who are truly willing to support us in the way we need to in order to achieve results now and in the future. The advantage of our warriors over the occupier is something we can all achieve together. Everyone who works for the sake of our independence in Ukraine. Everyone in the world, who truly values international law and wants to achieve a real, lasting, and just peace as soon as possible. The determination, courage, and support of Ukrainians now – the truly courageous decisions of our partners – is what guarantees that Russia will not succeed in imposing permanent chaos and wars on the world instead of normal life.

And one more thing.

Right now, a rescue operation is still underway in Kharkiv after the Russian strike. There are people under the rubble, and we are doing our utmost to help them. At the moment, we know that 12 people were injured. Unfortunately, one person died. My condolences to the families and friends.

All necessary forces are involved in the rescue operation. And we will certainly respond to Russia. Russian terror will inevitably be punished. And I thank everyone in the world who is helping Ukraine get closer to this goal.

Glory to Ukraine!

It is important to remember that the neo-fascist domestic British terrorism targeting migrants was fomented by an ongoing information warfare influence operation from Russian and Russian backed actors in the information environment.

“Russian state media were among those who falsely identified the suspect – who was charged overnight – as an asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK in a small boat.”—yes, but where did those false claims originate? Clue: it wasn’t St Petersburg. Suggest we look closer to home. https://t.co/qQR5hZNCeK

From The Telegraph:

The Kremlin launched a disinformation campaign in March, spreading false claims that MI6 and other Western intelligence agencies were responsible for a terror attack in Moscow.

Asked whether Moscow’s attitude towards the UK was “as grave as you can recall”, Sir Richard replied: “Yes, I think it is at the moment, certainly towards the West.

“The Russians think they’re in an existential conflict with us. That’s my view of the international situation. I think we are slightly complacent, and I don’t think people necessarily understand the danger that we’re in.”

Sir Richard said he had “not specifically heard of” a fake news website called Channel3Now, which was behind the false information about the Southport attacker.

“Clearly, it’s one of the sources of this activity out of Russia,” he added. “I think the people running these [sites] have a pretty open instruction to exploit opportunities as they identify them.

“They’re not going to get clearance from Putin, but it’s part of the nature of their setup and how they operate … They’re not going to act with restraint.”

Sir Richard said his own email account had been targeted by Russian hackers, despite him no longer holding an intelligence role. “You can see the extent of the effort they’re prepared to put into these activities,” he added. “I can’t say I’m a strategically crucial person.”

Asked whether X, formerly Twitter, had become a “wild west” under the control of Elon Musk, its owner, Sir Richard said Mr Musk’s approach to the social media platform represented “a split in America between those who believe in control and … absolute freedom and anarchy”.

Lord Mann, the Government’s independent adviser on anti-Semitism, suggested on Wednesday that Sir Keir Starmer should take action to regulate X, writing: “The way Twitter is framing its algorithms towards violent extremism requires careful but decisive action from legislators. Online harm is back on the agenda.”

Russian backed actors that are being amplified by the Starlink Snowflake:

Here’s a good rundown on how the Starlink Snowflake is being a useful idiot for Russia:

🧵🚨1/ It’s insane that @Elonmusk replied to @europeinvasionn’s tweet about UK riots. The account EuropeInvasionn, as I have stated many times now, is an influence operation. It’s a hijacked X account that exclusively deals in anti-migrant & anti-Muslim great replacement disinfo

Image
Image
Image

2/ EuropeInvasion was the most influential account spreading the false news that the attacker in #Southport was a Muslim. Arguably one of the biggest vectors in the disinfo potentially contributing to the violence in the UK
Image
Image
3/ A day later, it was the most widely shared account spreading an unsubstantiated and unfounded rumour that a murder in Ipswich was conducted by a Somali immigrant.Image
4/ It has 387k followers and has only been tweeting since February. It used to be an account with the handle @makcanerkripto. It was event suspended briefly by Twitter last month but reinstated.
Image
Image
5/ Musk also replies to the likes of @visegrad24 and @radiogenoa – similar accounts spreading racist bigotry. That Musk seems to think there will be civil war in UK or Europe is either because he follows such accounts, or because that’s a narrative he is keen to
promoteImage
6/ And by ‘insane’ I don’t mean ‘surprising’, I mean it’s absurd that he can do this and continue to get away with being a race baiting bigot.
7/ And in this particular case, why this account. How did he come across it, or was he presented it? Understanding this would be important.

If you want this stuff to stop, the only way to make it stop is for Russia to be defeated. It’s ability to wage conventional war, to use its conventional capabilities to make war on civilians in Ukraine in pursuit of Putin’s genocidal objectives, and its ability to wage political warfare, including information warfare, psychological operations, influence operations, and its ongoing wetwork campaign of assassination and sabotage. To do this you allow Ukraine to prosecute legitimate military targets. You actually put the defense industrial base on a war footing. You actually make significant investments in counterintelligence, counter-influence, and counter-political warfare capabilities and operations.

Or you can continue to do what the Biden administration is doing, which is lose the third world war and sacrifice Ukrainian lives while doing so.

The situation in the Pokrovsk direction is critical, with defenses in several areas collapsed and yet to stabilize, largely due to a shortage of personnel. Diverting nearly a brigade to launch an assault on Kursk Oblast, which lacks strategic sense, borders on mental disability

More from Rob Lee:

Some early thoughts about this operation. The most important factor in the war right now is Russia’s manpower and force availability advantage, in particular with infantry. That is the primary reason why Ukraine is struggling to hold back Russian advances in Donetsk oblast. Russia’s Kharkiv offensive further stretched Ukraine’s reserves, which means Ukrainian commanders have limited forces to reinforce units that are under pressure or to stop breakthroughs.
The situation on the Pokrovsk and Toretsk fronts is serious. The war has not seen large swings of the front line since 2022, but Russia’s advances on the Pokrovsk front over the past three weeks have been relatively rapid for the 2023-2024 period. So the question is how this operation will affect the fighting elsewhere and whether these forces could have been employed more effectively in Donetsk oblast. 2/
Compared to previous crossborder operations, this one is notable in that it appears to involve Ukrainian conventional forces and not just from GUR. Ukraine likely also is not able to employ HIMARS in support of the operation because the US only authorized strikes in Belgorod oblast relevant to Russia’s Kharkiv offensive. 3/
Ultimately, the two previous large crossborder operations in May-June 2023 and March 2024 had little effect on the fighting on the priority axes. The 2023 operation caught Russia by surprise and may have been a relatively effective economy of force mission (though it did not force Russia to redeploy significant forces from priority areas) but the March 2024 operation was far less successful. 4/
Since then, Russia stood up a Northern Group of Forces leading the Kharkiv offensive, and has strengthened its forces on the border. So Russia already has greater forces/conventional capabilities in the area, better command and control, and it has conscript units that can be deployed, which are not used in Ukraine. It is unlikely this operation will force Russia to pull significant forces from Ukraine. 5/
Russia has improved its dynamic targeting with persistent ISR coverage from UAVs behind Ukrainian lines, which are used to locate targets for Lancets, Krasnopol, Iskander-M, and other PGMs. Russian UAV footage of Ukrainian units moving across the border suggests this problem has not been solved, which can make it dangerous to mass armor. 6/
A limited operation might be able to achieve limited goals, but a more ambitious operation carries greater risks. It is unlikely this operation will have a significant effect on the course of the war, and previous crossborder operations did not have serious domestic political ramifications for Putin. 7/
We only have limited information right now and the size and scope of the operation isn’t clear, but largescale crossborder operations are more difficult now than they were in 2023 and Russia continues to advance in the Donbas. 8/

Russians have advanced another 500 to 1000 meters in western Niu-York.

Considering how calm the Russians climbing on the roof are, it’s safe to say that there are no Ukrainians nearby.

— Tatarigami_UA (@Tatarigami_UA) August 6, 2024

You need to consider the broader theater. The Russians are holding there their reserve forces, including guards battalions for logistics bases, conscripts, territorial defense units, FSB rapid reaction forces, and some leftover units from the previously planned Sumy operation. None of these will affect the main strategic direction – Donetsk oblast. We’re losing ground in key areas like New York and Toretsk right now, with Russian forces pushing closer to Pokrovsk. Yet, we are talking about some secondary rear units in Kursk Oblast, which affect the situation on the frontlines where it matters

They have reserves there, which they will deploy, and I have been tracking them since spring. I don’t foresee the Russians needing to redeploy resources from Donetsk oblast. They may bring in additional reserves from Bryansk or Belgorod Oblast, but this won’t affect Donbas

— Tatarigami_UA (@Tatarigami_UA) August 6, 2024

It is possible this is some type of MIL-DEC (military deception) operation or part of a Maskirovka strategy to divert attention from and provide cover for something else the Ukrainians are doing. But I agree with both Tatarigami and Lee, this doesn’t make a lot of sense and is unlikely to yield any significant gains all while diverting precious resources from where they’re needed in the eastern theater.

Yes, imagine your reaction if someone had told you on February 24, 2022, that 895 days on, Ukraine would be raiding Russia’s Kursk Oblast (although we have a lot of questions), annihilating Russian airbases and oil refineries, and celebrating the acquiring of Western-provided F-16s.

— Денис Казанський (@den_kazansky) August 6, 2024

It looks impressive, but the Ukrainians were only able to kill one Su-34. A month and a half ago they had the chance to get the majority of them, if not all of them but were told no by the Biden administration. They won’t get that chance again any time soon if ever. How many Ukrainians have been killed or wounded in glide bomb and cruise missile attacks in the past 45 days? How much Ukrainian infrastructure? Yes, the Russians are responsible for that. The Biden administration is responsible for not letting the Ukrainians try to prevent it.

That’s enough for tonight.

Just caught the tail-end of the Harris – Walz rally, and wow, Walz hit it out of the park! He talked about freedom and the common good and hit themes that will likely appeal to normies, e.g., that people should mind their own damn business. He even worked in a reference to the sofa-shagger’s online notoriety, saying he was looking forward to debating JD Vance — that is if Vance “gets off the couch and shows up.”

I wish I’d heard more of Harris’s speech; I tuned in just when she was handing it off to Waltz, who thanked her for bringing back the joy. Anyhoo, I thought he was terrific, and I look forward to acquiring a fresh set of bumper stickers. Check out the rally vid if you missed it!
