Say Hello To Wet Mountain Animal Welfare

*** Re-posting this from yesterday so more people see it and because I am too lazy to write a new post ***

Say Hello To Wet Mountain Animal Welfare

Hello all- as you know we decided to change animal charities from the delightful people at MARC to a new one, solely because MARC is so well established that they simply don’t need us anymore. They’re still great! There is nothing wrong with them that is causing this move. I love them 100%! But, much like fostering animals, who move along when they no longer need your help, so it is with us and our animal charities. It’s the bittersweet price of success. So if you have a recurring donation with MARC and want to keep it going, I say hell yes, they are great. But for us as a group, it is time to move on.

We asked you all a while back to help us find a new charity, and there were a lot of suggestions, but many of them just had massive operating budgets already, and what I really wanted was some place that was a shoestring operation, had a lot of heart and big ambition, was already getting a lot done with next to nothing, and who would FLOURISH with our meager annual cash injection. And so it is with WMAW.

WMAW is based in Colorado, in what was described to me as a region that is basically “poverty with a view,” and man did that strike home because it is basically the same story as around here in my parts and where our previous charities have been focused in Tennessee. They are in the 2nd poorest county in Colorado, right next to the poorest county, and man do they have their hands full. Their website is here, and I hope you all take some time and check them out. They have some big plans, and hopefully we can help them on their way and one day get them a physical space.

At any rate, that is our new charity. Our second runner up was Satby’s suggestion, the Spay Neuter Assistance Program of Michigan, but their annual budget was just too large to fit the criteria we were looking for. However, because of covid, they are low on funds this year, and are currently running a little fundraiser ($2500), so if you would like to chip in and help them out, it would be appreciated, I am sure.

Thanks for everyone who offered suggestions, and thanks to Watergirl for the legwork on the finances of different outlets.

Respite Open Thread: My Life Is Weird

You know…the ducks were one thing…but reptiles are a bridge too far.

Respite Open Thread: My Life Is Weird

I found this guy while gardening. He/she crawled right into my hand. Luckily I have a 13-yr old niece who is wild about reptiles (and has a bearded dragon). I texted her a photo, she told me it was a chameleon. Clearly well taken care of and very, very lost.

Respite Open Thread: My Life Is Weird 1

I’ve canvassed the neighborhood, feeling stupid, asking anyone if they lost a chameleon. I put a notice on NextDoor, where someone kindly informed me that there is a CO Reptile Humane Society here in town. I’ve contacted them and hopefully soon this poor thing will be in better hands than mine.

He/she is molting, so stress is probably not what it needs. For now, its in the bathroom in a plastic tote (probably the same one Penelope hung out in the kitchen) with some things to make it comfortable.

Its sweet, but I know nothing about reptile, except how to remove a snake from my hallway and escort it outside.

My life.  It is weird.

ETA: Rescue contacted me and we are headed over there to drop off the little cutie. He/she will be safe now.

Cat Rescue Bleg – Chicago Area

Cat Rescue Bleg - Chicago Area - STOCKPILE

From ‘mostly-lurker’ Gary in CHI:

Fluff has had a rather too-interesting life in recent years.  She started life as a feral (her tipped left ear is her badge of honor), and was adopted as a kitten by Terry, John, and Bob.  She made herself at home in their Chicago two-flat, along with a number of other kitties, including her brother, Tommy.  A few years ago, one of her dads, John, died suddenly, and Terry died in January 2020, leaving Bob and the kitties.

The problem is that Bob’s primary residence is in Texas, and he isn’t able to spend as much time in Chicago as he would like, especially since he has two dogs in Texas (lovely Brittany spaniels that even a kitty might like).  Bob has succeeded in adopting out some of Fluff’s compatriots; the only kitties left are Tommy and Fluff.  He needs to find homes for them, as the current situation, with Bob gone so much of the time and cat-sitters coming in briefly every day, isn’t sustainable.

Tommy has always been very cautious around people, spending much of his time hiding; he never really has lost his feral-ness in that way.  Fluff used to be standoffish, too, but since Terry passed away and Bob isn’t around much, she has become very affectionate with him.  She craves attention, loves being petted, and is always near Bob when he’s on the sofa or loveseat.  She often falls asleep on the top of the sofa, right behind Bob.

Cat Rescue Bleg - Chicago Area - STOCKPILE 2

Bob isn’t aware of much of Fluff’s medical history, although he knows she did get neutered and had a rabies shot as a kitten.

As you can see, Fluff is a very pretty girl indeed.  She would never reveal her age, though humans estimate it at somewhere around 10 (she looks very youthful, no?)  She is a sweet girl who co-existed very well with multiple other cats for many years, although that, of course, is no guarantee of what might happen in a new household.  She has had no exposure to children or dogs.

If anyone in or near Chicago is interested…

Sophie Update!

AWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know the hospital code for cuteness overload?

Thanks to everyone’s generosity, and then a last minute push from a donor who has a rescued Boston terrier from the local Boston terrier rescue to push the funding over the top, Sophie had her eye surgery yesterday. Her human sent this yesterday:

Surgery went well. She’s home but pretty groggy as they had to put her under general anesthesia. She ate a little, drank a little, and has been mostly sleeping on my lap – she’s like a little furnace! She still has an IV in her leg.I’ll take her back tomorrow for a 24 hr check and they’ll take it out then.

And today’s update:

Sacked out again after going under anesthesia today again to repair stitches in her left eye that were leaking.  Poor little girl!

So that little complication aside, everything seems to have gone well and she’s at home resting comfortably.

Thank you all for your generosity and helping Sophie afford her surgery!

For Sophie! A Request For Some Pet Assistance

Allow me to introduce my next door neighbor Sophie!

For Sophie! A Request For Some Pet Assistance 2

As you can see, she’s thrilled to meet you…

Sophie moved in at the end of this past winter. She was originally a foster pup from the local Boston Terrier rescue. Her human’s yellow lab had passed away several months before after a long and good life. The great news is that next door is Sophie’s forever home! The bad news is that Sophie, who is two, has really bad canine cataracts and is blind. The good news is there is surgery that can correct this. The not so good news is that while it isn’t cost prohibitive, it isn’t cheap either. Back when Sophie’s human told me that the vet who specializes in doing these types of surgery examined her and said she’d be a good candidate, I told her that when they were ready to do it that I’d put a request for donations up here. Because you all are kind, big hearted folks. While the surgery had been delayed for several weeks because of Florida’s sort of safer at home orders, they are now ready to get it scheduled and done.

Here’s what Jeanne, Sophie’s human, sent over this morning:

HELP! Sophie Marie came into our rescue 5 months ago with little to no sight and needs surgery! Sophie hadn’t seen a vet since she was 4 months old, had not had shots/vaccinations, or had her cataracts diagnosed/treated. Sophie was only about 16 pounds and her ribs and spine were obvious. But despite this neglect, Sophie had the ability to trust and bond with a new human. She is a sweet and funny girl that likes nothing better than to be curled up on your lap or at least touching you. Sophie has gotten much more comfortable meeting new people over the months and it has been wonderful to see her gain more confidence. We can’t wait to see the dog she becomes with vision! As you can imagine, juvenile bilateral cataract surgery is a big deal, and a big expense. We hope that you will join us in our fight to save Sophie’s sight by donating any amount you can.

New Friends for Tough Times

A couple of Jackals have new additions to their families his month.  Welcome Finch and Bear!

RedDirtGirl gets a new friend!

I wanted to share some photos of the sweet pupper that is staying with me for the time being. Her name is Finch. At some point I’ll find my forever dog, but I’m lucky to have her company right now, when things are so bleak.

Here she is back in early March checking out my neighborhood.

Here she is snoozling on my bed.

This is her favorite spot in the apartment.

And another new friend, of the permanent variety, for:

BGinCHI and family!

Well, we adopted a puppy today.  He’s energetic and then bam, down for a nap. He’s a sweet dog: playful but also a little shy and reserved. We all have some getting to know each other time coming.

Does he know he’s “home” yet?  I think he’s getting it. We got him from a herding dogs rescue shelter. He’s 3+ months. Mother an American cattle dog (blue heeler). Father unknown, but his litter mates all have white and gray marl. He’s the only black one.

Here’s Bear this morning, settling in on his red blanket.

And here he is yesterday, all tuckered out after the big move.

Yesterday, again, scoping things out.

Not quite napping, but definitely resting.

Is anyone else making new friends, furry or otherwise?
