Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

No one could have predicted…

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

In my day, never was longer.

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Let me file that under fuck it.

You cannot shame the shameless.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Late Night Open Thread: Down, Amongst the Libertarians

Don't blame me I voted for Ben Dover https://t.co/VgKPT11dgO

— Roy Edroso (@edroso) May 26, 2024

He's the one scrambling for that 3% because he knows he's at his ceiling and Biden isn't. https://t.co/pFtpOESliv

I guarantee the only thing the Mises Caucus learns from this is they need stricter security at the next convention https://t.co/0c6xT6BDMn

Even the Terminally Savvy John Heilemann, now at Puck, feels free to dump on TFG — “Donald Trump and R.F.K. Jr.’s cringe-inducing, partly hilarious, and ultimately failed forays into Libertarian Land”:

… Taking place at the Washington Hilton—best known as the site of another legit shitshow, the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner—and bearing “Become Ungovernable” as its official theme, the Libertarian convention unfolded over four days, the last of which, Sunday, revolved around the selection of the party’s presidential nominee and was televised live by C-SPAN. On the (I hope and trust entirely safe) assumption that no one reading Impolitic was batty enough to watch much, if any, of the proceedings live, I offer this account…

The truth is, both Trump and Kennedy had thoroughly beclowned themselves with their forays into Libertarian Land long before Oliver finally, blessedly, brought the convention to a close. The Trump incursion was billed by his people as another in a series of high-profile attempts—the meeting with the Teamsters in January, the visit to SneakerCon in February, the rally in the South Bronx last week—to court voters beyond the confines of the MAGA base.

Instead, the appearance turned into a uniquely Trumpian spectacle, in which the former president was roundly booed, heckled, and mocked by the delegates (some in t-shirts reading TRUMP/FAUCI 2024: GIVE US ANOTHER SHOT), prompting him to march through a series of increasingly desperate moves to try to quell the hostility he encountered: first, gratuitous pandering (“I’ve been indicted by the government on 91 different things, so if I wasn’t a libertarian before, I sure as hell am a libertarian now”); then, attempted favor-trading (vows to appoint a Libertarian to his cabinet and to commute the life sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the infamous dark web drug clearinghouse Silk Road); and, finally, frustrated mockery of the very people he was there to court: “I’m asking for the Libertarian Party’s endorsement, … [but] only do that if you want to win. If you want to lose, don’t do that. Keep getting your three percent every four years.”

The pièce de résistance, however, didn’t come until the next day, when the party chair ruled Trump ineligible even to compete for the party’s nomination because his campaign had failed to file the necessary paperwork. (In an impressive showing of grassroots strength, he still received six write-in votes in the first round, five more than Stormy Daniels, Denali—the cat mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska—and both Sean Ono Lennon and Afroman.) Undeterred as usual by either reality or the words that had issued forth from his own pie-hole the night before, Trump attempted to explain the pratfall with a post on Truth Social: “The reason I didn’t file paperwork for the Libertarian Nomination, which I would have absolutely gotten if I wanted it (as everyone could tell by the enthusiasm of the Crowd last night!), was the fact that, as the Republican Nominee, I am not allowed to have the Nomination of another Party.”…

When Reporting Is Really an Attempt To Control and Discourage You (Open Thread)

This post is in: Open Threads

Things we do not know:

  • Who will win the presidency in November
  • Which party will control the House of Representatives in the next congress
  • Which party will control the Senate in the next congress
  • How the jury will vote in the trial in Justice Merchan’s court?
  • Whether everyone on the jury is acting in good faith

Things we do know:

  • Anyone who pretends to know any of the above is full of shit
  • A lot of “reporting” is simply an attempt to influence the outcome
  • We cannot control the outcome; we just have to do the work

This has been another episode of stay the course and do not fall into the trap of believing reporting that is not reporting at all.

Oh, and Henry says ‘hey’. He has important things on his mind, like whether you prefer him with shorter hair or longer hair.

Hodgepodge, Mishmash or Smorgasbord?

Also, ears or no ears?

I’m going to try to keep tonight’s post on the shorter side.

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) May 28, 2024

From The Kyiv Independent:

Russian forces attacked Sumy Oblast 81 times in 23 separate attacks throughout the day, the Sumy Oblast Military Administration reported on May 28.

The communities of Bilopillia, Khotin, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Berezivka, Seredyna-Buda, Novoslobidske, Putyvl, Hlukhiv, and Esman, were targeted.

Throughout the day, Russia assailed the border communities with mortar, drone, and artillery attacks, while also dropping explosives from drones onto a community.

No casualties or injuries were reported.

The town of Velyka Pysarivka, located about 3 kilometers west of the Ukraine-Russia border, experienced the bulk of the attacks reported with 19 explosions recorded in the area.

Given the town’s proximity to Russia, Velyka Pysarivka has become a main target of attack for Russia over recent months. Much of the community’s infrastructure has been destroyed by Russian attacks.

Russian strikes against Sumy Oblast have become increasingly destructive in recent months. Amid intensified attacks, Ukrainian authorities ordered increased evacuations from the region.

Ukraine’s military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said on May 14 he expects Russia to launch a new attack in Sumy Oblast once the situation in Kharkiv Oblast stabilized, the New York Times reported.

Officials from Ukraine’s Border Guard service later said that Russia does not have enough troops on the Sumy Oblast border to launch a major attack on the region.

Shelling is a daily occurrence for the communities near Ukraine’s northeastern border with Russia, with residents in the region’s vulnerable border settlements experience multiple attacks per day.

President Zelenskyy is still traveling. Today he was in Portugal. Here is the video of his joint press conference with Portuguese PM Luís Montenegro.

Via the Politico, I learn that we are all supposed to be freaking out:

A pervasive sense of fear has settled in at the highest levels of the Democratic Party over President Joe Biden’s reelection prospects, even among officeholders and strategists who had previously expressed confidence about the coming battle with Donald Trump.

All year, Democrats had been on a joyless and exhausting grind through the 2024 election. But now, nearly five months from the election, anxiety has morphed into palpable trepidation, according to more than a dozen party leaders and operatives. And the gap between what Democrats will say on TV or in print, and what they’ll text their friends, has only grown as worries have surged about Biden’s prospects.

I just don’t know what to say to this. Do I find the idea of four more years of Trump terrifying? Absolutely. Do I think it will be the end of democracy as we know it in the United States? Yes. But at the same time, what is the point of freaking out? I can’t mentally live in fear of what I can not control. Not to mention, what am I supposed to fucking do, anyway? Vote harder?

It’s already depressing enough knowing that I live surrounded by people who love them some Trump, and knowing that I live in a country that could very easily elect him. I just can not lose my shit over it every day.

In other news, Israel is just galloping torwards its new destiny as a complete pariah state:

Israeli shelling and airstrikes killed at least 37 people, most of them sheltering in tents, outside the southern Gaza city of Rafah overnight and on Tuesday — pummeling the same area where strikes triggered a deadly fire days earlier in a camp for displaced Palestinians — according to witnesses, emergency workers and hospital officials.

The tent camp inferno has drawn widespread international outrage, including from some of Israel’s closest allies, over the military’s expanding offensive into Rafah. And in a sign of Israel’s growing isolation on the world stage, Spain, Norway and Ireland formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday.

Fucking hell. The Israeli military initially took credit for the strikes triumphantly claiming the death of two Hamas leaders or henchman or I don’t even know what they call them anymore, but is now arguing that it was in fact a precision strike, and I don’t know and can’t predict what kind of statements they will backpedal to because pretty much we’re at the point where they don’t care anymore and will just say “but 7 October and fuck you.”

All of this, as wiser people have noted (Adam), is all for nothing because they have no strategy, only tactics, and are basically so deep in a game of whack a mole that they don’t even really care if they are actually aiming at moles any more. It’s gotten so bad that even one of the worst fucking human beings in the world, Piers Morgan, is occasionally making sense.

At this point, though, it just feels like the Israeli government has decided to redo every bad mistake the United States made post 9/11 but in the most fucking incompetent and evil way possible. The whole fucking thing is tragic.

As you all know, I just love birds, but for the past four hours there is a mourning dove perched in one of my trees just about level with my office window, and it WILL NOT SHUT UP. NONSTOP. I even went outside to see if something was threatening its nest, but there was nothing. Guy just needs to get laid or something. But he is making me mental in the process.

In other news, the tumor of a pimple on my forehead will not come to a head, and if the wind blows hard it hurts. If it does not get better by tomorrow, there will be some home surgery taking place. I am now on day five of sinus hell, and my already sour mood is now escalated to low simmer, and I am even more pissy and irritable than I was yesterday.

Currently on Season two of the Boys rewatch (I never saw season 3 and a new season is coming out), and playing Horizon Forbidden West, although my character Aloy never shuts up. Joelle is doing well. Just thought I would throw that out there because you gossips get all het up when I don’t mention her every now and then.

Yikes, looks like we could use an open thread.  I gardened most of the morning, have been working this afternoon.

Why can’t I get paid to read Balloon Juice all day?  Then I could stay on top of things for sure. :-)  As it is, I have to garden and take care of those pesky clients.  (Just joking on the clients, I love my clients.)

How are the closing arguments going?  What else is going on?

Open thread!

Trump’s NY Criminal Trial, Day 20: Jury Instruction Discussion at 2:15 Eastern

Open thread.

Update:

Witness testimony refresher from ABC.  h/t Jackie or Scout211, I think.  It was in a thread yesterday and I have slept since then!

Over the last five weeks, the jury in Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial witnessed a marathon of testimony.

Among the 22 witnesses who took the stand, jurors heard from Trump’s former lawyer, an adult film actress, two of Trump’s executive assistants, a tabloid executive, a top White House aide, and a flurry of custodial witnesses as prosecutors sought to show that Trump falsified business records to hide the reimbursement of a hush money payment his then-attorney Michael Cohen made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to boost Trump’s electoral prospects in the 2016 presidential election.
