Sunday Morning Open Thread: The New Pope

Pope to Cardinals on why he chose the name Leo XIV: “There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution.”

How Pope Leo XIV became the conclave’s stealth candidate – The Washington Post www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/0…

— Timothy McBride (@mcbridetd.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 12:44 AM

Basically, he’s a networker. Per the Washington Post, “How Pope Leo XIV became the conclave’s stealth candidate” [gift link]

… Cardinal Robert Walter McElroy, the archbishop of Washington, said Prevost’s breakthrough occurred Thursday, the day of his selection: “There was a great movement on the second day, a great movement.”

Yet as early as the initial vote Wednesday, Prevost was already over-performing, according to one senior Vatican official — in part because the prelate had always been a stronger candidate than many outside the Vatican generally understood. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a secret vote.

An American who had become a naturalized citizen of Peru while serving the church on the country’s northwest coast, Leo emerged as an early favorite among an influential group that included a cluster of Latin American cardinals, particularly those who sought a continuation of Francis’s legacy.

“Prevost, unknown to the many, was favored by a majority of the cardinals that came from abroad — he wasn’t unknown to them,” the official said.

Even before the conclave began, Prevost was viewed by many in the Vatican as a logical successor to Francis despite being from the United States — a nation the Holy See had long seen as having outsize global power and influence. Francis had plucked him from his distant outpost in Peru in 2023 to run the influential dicastery, or ministry, of bishops. In no time, he’d become indispensable to the pope’s bid to change the church by elevating clerics seen as more in line with Francis’s pastoral approach, emphasis on the poor and open door.

In the important congregations — assemblies of cardinals ahead of the vote — Prevost had not necessarily overwhelmed the cardinals with inspiring words, the way Francis had in 2013 when he spoke stirringly of ministry to the world’s “peripheries.” Rather, he had a gentle, engaging manner and, as Francis liked to say, “the smell of the sheep” on him from serving the church for decades in the proverbial trenches.

show full post on front page

“I don’t remember any particular intervention Prevost offered to the general congregation. But he did engage quite effectively in smaller group conversations,” Cardinal Wilton Daniel Gregory, another Chicago native and the retired cardinal of Washington, said at a news conference in Rome on Friday. “I did talk to Prevost and we talked about Chicago of course. It wasn’t that he stood up and made this speech that wowed that body,” he said.

Perhaps most shockingly, the taboo of electing an American appeared to be more myth than reality. It simply wasn’t a major topic of discussion, several cardinals said…

There was another big reason for the conclave to lean toward Prevost.

The Vatican is in financial crisis, suffering from a drop in global donations and a gaping deficit in its pension fund. The shortfalls had led Francis to clash with the heads of Holy See dicasteries over budget cuts shortly before his February hospitalization with double pneumonia, according to two Vatican officials familiar with the situation.

Two cardinals who spoke with The Post on Friday said that Leo, when he served as head of the bishop’s dicastery, and earlier, as the head of his Augustinian order, was seen as a sharp manager — the kind of detail man the Vatican needs…

I bet Len Leo really hates the new Pope and I enjoy this fact.

Squishable Morning Thread

Here’s a thread to tide us over and keep the gardening thread horticulture-focused until a more official morning thread appears.

Something amusing to start us off: Last week, DHS boss and dog and goat exterminator Kristi Noem made a stunt visit to Illinois to hold a press conference to decry “sanctuary policies.” Her advance team sent out a notification for the press availability.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker wasn’t having that bullshit; he sent out a press release of his own. Here’s part of the official response from the governor’s office about Noem’s visit to the region:

“We would urge all pet owners in the region to make sure all of your beloved animals are under watchful protection while the secretary is in the region,” the note said.

You know, I instinctively mistrust billionaires, but I like the cut of Pritzker’s jib. He seems like the real deal.

War for Ukraine Day 1,171: A Brief Saturday Night Update

Painting by NEIVANMADE. It has a white background an in the center are Soldiers in green doing air defense by firing at incoming Russian missiles in the upper right. The missiles are red and yellow. As I indicated last night, today was a very long day, so I’m just going to do a very brief update.

Fascist Russia planning to end its sham ceasefire with a bang tonight, Ukrainian intelligence sources warn.

— Euan MacDonald (@euanmacdonald.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 9:49 AM

As of 10:20 PM EDT/5:20 AM local time in Ukraine, Russian drone swarms are moving east to west across Ukraine. Air raid alerts are up over all of eastern, south central, north central, and most of central Ukraine.

In a coordinated move today, U.S., Ukrainian, and European leaders jointly demanded a 30-day ceasefire, effective May 12th. This represents their first concerted attempt to exert pressure on Russia, characterized by a specific timeframe and a demonstration of solidarity.

The international community will be watching closely to see how Russia reacts and, more importantly, what measures the allies will take if(when) Russia disregards this demand.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 9:27 AM

Didn’t take long to get a response from Putin:

The only noteworthy thing Putin said is his suggestion to renew direct talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul on May 15❗️

Blaming Ukraine for halting those talks in 2022 has been a long-standing Russian talking point. However, it’s crucial to remember that in those negotiations,

Russia consistently demanded nothing short of Ukraine’s surrender and the dismantling of its military—essentially positioning itself to unironically seize our country within three days.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 7:06 PM

Putin: “We are committed to serious negotiations. It’s not ruled out that we could agree on new ceasefires.”

— WarTranslated (Dmitri) (@wartranslated.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 6:53 PM

Putin: “There’s a war going on now, and we’re proposing negotiations—what’s wrong with that?” No longer calling it an “SVO”?

— WarTranslated (Dmitri) (@wartranslated.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 6:56 PM

Peskov said Russia will review Ukraine’s 30-day ceasefire proposal but hasn’t heard Kyiv’s response to a 3-day offer: “Why not agree to three days?” Russia “must think” about the 30-day plan, holding its own stance, and sees Europe as “openly” against it, he told CNN.

Back to Ukraine:

As our team and I anticipated last year, the momentum of this war is gradually fading. Neither side has enough resources at disposal to achieve a decisive strategic breakthrough. As a result, with or without a formal truce, the intensity of the war is likely to decline

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

The cost-benefit for Russia at this stage is unfavorable. There is, of course, a theoretical assumption among some Russians that if they push a little harder for a little longer, the front line will collapse and Ukraine will give up. But very little points to that outcome

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

At the same time, very few people in Ukraine still believe that if Russia loses another regiment- or brigade-sized force to capture yet another settlement in Donetsk Oblast, it will lead to mass desertions or a collapse of Russian forces.

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

Whether we’re referring to Russian missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians, or Ukrainian attacks on depots, industries, and refineries, the results are largely at the tactical level: with only a few cases potentially reaching the operational level

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

The situation on the front lines remains more unfavorable for Ukraine. However, the discussion isn’t about who is winning, but rather about who is losing more. Put simply, both sides are expending human and material resources with little prospect of achieving its strategic goals

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

The potential lifting of sanctions, US aid and intelligence cutoff, the rise of more populist and pro-Russian politicians in parts of Europe, and open support from North Korea have given Russia renewed confidence that it may still achieve its strategic objectives in Ukraine

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

At the same time, there has been a recent and noticeable shift in Washington’s rhetoric toward Russia, likely driven by frustration with its negotiating stance and refusal to accept ceasefires by attaching non-starter preconditions that render meaningful dialogue impossible

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

At the current pace, Russia would need several more years to, maybe, take control of the Donbas – a goal that seems increasingly difficult given the strain on its economy, rising recruitment payments, and other military expenditures that give only limited battlefield gains

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

Given the growing fatigue on both sides, and barring a major power shift, the war is likely to move toward either a truce or a slow-burning phase – where intensity declines until one side builds enough resources or capitalizes on geopolitical events to change the situation

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 8:57 PM

He hasn’t told us his papal name yet. (Leo has some obvious resonance, but current events–plus the fact that it’s my brother’s name–suggest that we might want to avoid that one.)

He’s a sweetie. He’s kinda just walked in and taken over.  He is relentless–and a pretty good cat-footie player. (The metal cap from a champagne bottle held him fascinated for quite a while.) And then he just goes boneless and ends up like this:

Blessed Increase! 2

He and Champ haven’t met yet. I think Champ figures something is going on, as she usually joins me when I cook dinner, and she’s remained firmly upstairs for the last few hours. But that negotiation is for another day.

But the name!?  I’ve usually found that cats tell you who they are, but it can take a day or so.  My spouse is partial to Felis or Felix–which isn’t too far off, but doesn’t seem right.  Sherlock crossed my mind, as Increase is definitely observant, but, again, it doesn’t quite slip on him like a glove.  We’ll see. (Suggestions gratefully received and almost certainly ignored.

Here’s one more.

He’s hard to photograph in action–that boy moves fast. But he already is taking charge, which I need and love.

Not only is it good news that Ed Martin is out; this is as express an acknowledgment we've seen so far from Trump about how the Senate can reject his nominees. Remember when his term started and he was going to try to force a recess to get his folks through in an authoritarian way?

We’re all enjoying the comic potential of replacement Judge Jeanne ‘Winebox’ Pirro’s nomination, but let’s celebrate a righteous citizen’s one-person protest…

A passerby spat on Washington D.C’s interim U.S. attorney, Ed Martin, as he was giving a live interview.

The incident was captured on video, which went viral.

“We need to get really focused,” Martin started saying to the television reporter, when the unidentified woman pointed her finger at him before spitting at him and then walking off.

According to The New York Post, when the incident happened, Martin was speaking about the withdrawal of his nomination to be the permanent U.S. attorney to Newsmax on May 8, 2025. Fox News host Jeanine Pirro was nominated instead to be U.S. attorney for the Washington D.C. district.

It appeared the woman was simply walking past when she spotted Martin because she was also walking a dog.

“You are Ed Martin,” the woman said before spitting on him…

Thanks…and, uh…News

Two quick things:

First:

Thanks to everyone who was so kind in your responses to my farewell to Tikka. It meant a great deal to read the outpouring of love for that magnificent cranky old beast, and I was very moved by the stories of the losses of beloved companions.  I know we’re not supposed to say this out loud, but y’all are good people.

Second:

Tikka left a hole in our household. Champ feels it.  She’s been very needy, somewhat confused, and constantly next to one human or another–mostly me, as I keep a bed for her next to my computer. She’s here as I type this:

Thanks...and, uh...News

The humans do too. Even though I was Tikka’s person, my wife and kid both feel the same absence I do.  I had been planning to let that just be the way things are for a while, but we all knew another cat was in our future.  That thought made its way to the same folks who connected us with Champ–letting us know one day in the first pandemic summer that there was a kitten who needed a rescue and if we said yes she would arrive tomorrow. And she did:

Thanks...and, uh...News 1

Well…they’ve done it again and my son has just let me know that the vague intention of a cat we expected to meet in late summer or fall will arrive in a few hours.  Seems another little one needed a home and we’re it.

It will be interesting to see how and how fast Champ adjusts. Tikka was surprisingly mellow when she arrived. Here’s hoping for a repeat.

Thanks...and, uh...News 4

I’m a bit stunned and am really not ready…but that’s how this works. Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

I’ll provide an update when blessed increase arrives.

And again: thanks y’all. It was a comfort to write that farewell post, and more so to receive the Jackaltariat reaction.

Treat this as an open thread.

Vampires Walk Among Us Open Thread

This post is in: Open Threads, Assholes, The Horrors

Ours is an age when very few people in public life seem to have any original ideas. Old grudges, old theories of how society or gender or diseases work. Old grifts are getting re-aired again, too. Exhibit one:

Vampires Walk Among Us Open Thread

Yes. it’s her again. The Theranos lady with the fake deep voice. She’s currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for fraud, having tried to sell the world on a just-one-drop blood-testing machine that turned out to be vaporware. However, her partner, hotel heir Billy Evans, is keeping the dubious-blood-testing-device flame lit. Per the NY Times (archive.is link here with no paywall):

show full post on front page

Billy Evans, who has two children with Ms. Holmes, is trying to raise money for a company that describes itself as “the future of diagnostics” and “a radically new approach to health testing,” according to marketing materials reviewed by The New York Times.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because Theranos similarly aimed to revolutionize diagnostic testing. The Silicon Valley start-up captured the world’s attention by claiming, falsely as it turned out, to have developed a blood-testing device that could run a slew of complex lab tests from a mere finger prick.

Mr. Evans’s company is named Haemanthus, which is a flower also known as the blood lily. It plans to begin with testing pets for diseases before progressing to humans, according to two investors pitched on the company who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they had agreed to keep the plans secret. Mr. Evans’s marketing materials, which lay out hopes to eventually raise more than $50 million, say the ultimate goal is nothing short of “human health optimization.”

The machine he is planning to build looks eerily like the Edison machine Holmes and her erstwhile business partner/squeeze Sunny Balwani were hawking to gullible investors like former secretaries of state George Schultz and Henry Kissinger, the Murdoch family, the DeVos family, and others. I’m sure Mr. Evans’s pitch will hook at least a few takers, in spite of his connections to a convicted fraudster.

Sometimes I think if I had no scruples I could make a quick $50 million hawking, like, rose quartz bracelets that improve your tooth enamel and your sex life by blocking 5G “radiation.” But I don’t think I could live with myself if I did. That’s the difference between me and you and these latter-day vampires: we look in the mirror and we actually see what’s there.
