Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Be a wild strawberry.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Let there be snark.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

The lights are all blinking red.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

This blog will pay for itself.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

The National Guard is not Batman.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

WE’RE THE KIDS IN AMERICA

The kids are fed up, and they’ve had it up to here!

The Civics Center is targeting the youth vote where they are easiest to reach:  AT SCHOOL

Recent polls show that Gen Z voters (age 18-29) are souring on the Trump Administration.

Once seen as a wild card with surprising appeal among disillusioned young voters, President Donald Trump is now facing a sharp decline in support from Generation Z, according to new polling.

Newsweek analyzed the latest results from major pollsters since early March that included age-specific approval ratings and found that Trump’s standing among the youngest voters is currently at 37 percent approving, while 58 percent disapprove of his job performance.

This signals that Trump’s support among Generation Z voters has tailed off since the 2024 election, when 47 percent of voters aged 18-29 cast a ballot for him, up from 36 percent in 2020.

Trump is particularly losing support among young Gen Z men, who were some of the least engaged and lowest information voters – perhaps the very epitome of the “vibes” voter.

According to the Newsweek article:

He was physically ‘tough’ as evidenced by his response to the Butler, PA, assassination attempt, he’s not ‘politically correct’ and speaks his mind, he’s a businessman who supposedly knows how to manage the economy, and so forth. This is all part of the Trumpian narrative,” Katz said.

But polls now show that Trump’s image as the “men’s” candidate may be beginning to unravel.

According to data provided by YouGov Blue, net approval for Trump declined by 29 points among young male registered voters between January and March, a significantly bigger shift than any other demographic.

We Have An Opportunity Here!

The Civic Center is smack in the middle of their on-campus High School voter education, registration and motivation drive – “Cap, Gown & Ballot” on several metropolitan area campuses in mostly swing states.  We’re helping them register and inspire students in nine urban Pittsburgh High Schools this month in advance of the Fall Pennsylvania Supreme Court retention race and next year’s midterms.

I can think of no more cost-effective way to register and engage our voters than reaching them at school.  No canvassing, no door-knocking, no texts, no postcards – just direct access to potential voters.

This is consistent with National Ground Game on college campuses, where we will support counter-programming right wing campus rallies with our own “influencers” this is possibly our best bang for the voter registration buck.

That collapse in support for Trump among Gen Z males?

Fighting Them Where They Are

Handy MAGA Biz Boycott Guide (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  May 3, 20258:50 am| 189 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

A while back, HuffPo published an article on PublicSquare, a MAGA-friendly business directory site and how liberals are using it to find out which businesses to avoid. Here’s an excerpt:

As a consumer, PublicSquare’s website is easy to use. You just enter your ZIP code and it pulls up businesses near you that want to be publicly associated with Trump and his values. The company, which launched in 2022, has direct connections to Trump, too: Its board of directors includes Donald Trump Jr., who also is an investor…

(Reddit user) Jeff’s posts about PublicSquare, or offshoots of them, have popped up on Reddit in cities and towns in Illinois, Colorado, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Maine, North Carolina and in general Reddit forums. The idea of using PublicSquare for boycotts has gained attention in local news stories. Last month, a TikTok user with 19,000 followers filmed himself describing PublicSquare and directing people to its website to find MAGA-friendly businesses to cut off. His video has gotten more than 348,000 “likes.”…

“It is a website that conservatives will register their business on to show they are anti-woke, pro-conservative and especially pro-life,” he says.

How handy! Using an incognito tab and entering my ZIP code (I’m not letting those right-wing fuckers track my location!), I looked up my region and found several local businesses to avoid.

If you live in a deep red area like I do, it’s difficult to avoid MAGA businesses altogether. My approach is kind of slapdash.

I don’t patronize a nearby thrift shop that flies MAGA banners, even though it looks like exactly the type of dump I would otherwise ransack for vintage ale mugs and what-not. To me, the banner is a sign that they don’t want my business.

On the other hand, there are a few MAGA-owned pubs I visit occasionally because they aren’t particularly “in your face” about it, and there are no liberal alternatives that I know about. I’m not gonna just stop going to pubs!

Anyhoo, the PublicSquare listees took the proactive step of associating their businesses with the Trumps. So fuck them.

War for Ukraine Day 1,163: Another Long Night in Kharkiv

As Russian drone swarms move across Ukraine in the small hours, Kharkiv has been hit especially hard once again.

🇺🇦President Zelenskyy: Kharkiv has been hit by dozens of “Shahed” drones. There were no military targets, nor could there have been. Russia is striking residential areas precisely when Ukrainians are at home, when they are putting their children to bed.

It was such a beautiful day in Kharkiv—feathery clouds in the sky, spring bloom everywhere. Then, Russia struck our city with 18 drones, setting everything ablaze and injuring at least 40 people.

This is our reality now. Anything beautiful is shattered and burned simply for existing in Ukraine.

The Task Is to Accelerate the Creation of Ukrainian Ballistic Systems as Much as Possible – Address by the President

2 May 2025 – 21:05

Dear Ukrainians!

A brief update for today. I held a meeting of the Staff. Reports were made on supplies for our brigades and the staffing of our units. And also, in great detail, on Ukraine’s missile program, our missile developments, and our production capabilities. The task is to accelerate the creation of our Ukrainian ballistic systems as much as possible. Our long-range capabilities are a clear and effective guarantee of Ukraine’s security.

I also held a meeting today regarding the development of our military aviation, focusing primarily on Ukrainian F-16s. The aircraft that are already in Ukraine. The aircraft that will arrive in Ukraine shortly. The long-term supply plans. Personnel decisions were made to strengthen the management of military aviation. These were decisions for both the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff. And we see now that there are some good results, and I want to thank everyone contributing to the development of our military aviation.

The Commander-in-Chief reported several times today, with particular focus on the situation in the Donetsk region, especially the Pokrovsk direction and several other areas. We continue to operate in the territory of the Kursk and Belgorod regions as well. Russia continues to reject a full and lasting ceasefire – all our partners are already tired of these Russian manipulations. We are defending our positions and will act accordingly, both on the frontlines and in our actions on Russian territory. The war must be felt where it came from.

Today, I held two conversations with our partners. I spoke with the Prime Minister of Denmark. As always, my discussion with Mette was very meaningful and friendly. I informed her about the situation on the frontlines and our contacts with key partners. We discussed our joint steps, our joint work in Europe – diplomatic efforts, as well as efforts to increase investment in arms production here in Ukraine. The Danish model works effectively. I also spoke with the President of Ecuador – I congratulated him on his re-election. I thanked him for supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We greatly value the support from Latin America and other parts of the world, where people may have less access to accurate information about Russia’s war and Russia’s refusal to even cease fire. Every leader and every country that takes principled and value-based stances in their regions represents the real foundation of the international order based on rules. We also discussed with the President of Ecuador the economic relations between our countries. We are very interested in increasing our trade, and this will happen. Ukrainian diplomacy is working in all directions for the benefit of our state, for our independence. I thank everyone who stands with us, who stands with Ukraine!

And today, I would like to express particular gratitude to Ukrainian prosecutors and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine, who are handling the case of embezzlement of assets from the Ukrainian state company “Motor Sich” and the sale of Ukrainian weapons to Russia. One of the suspects has been detained in Monaco, and it is important to note that this is a signal: they will not hide abroad. Everyone must be held accountable for their actions. I have also instructed the heads of law enforcement agencies to pay special attention to such cases and to the search for misappropriated Ukrainian funds that have been transferred abroad. This is a matter of principle.

Glory to Ukraine!

First Lady Zelenska visited a resiliency center in Zhytomyr today.

218 Resilience Centers Are Already Providing Free Assistance Across the Country – Olena Zelenska

2 May 2025 – 17:14

First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska visited a Resilience Center in the Zhytomyr city territorial community.

The Center was established by the BGV Charity Fund in partnership with the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine. It is part of the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program “How are you?”.

This is a barrier-free space where every member of the community can receive professional assistance and support free of charge. For example, to cope with anxious thoughts and conditions, to write a resume and prepare for a job interview, to process loss, to find resources and activities that help overcome emotional and physical burnout.

The Center offers programs for veterans and their families, children, and people who have lost their loved ones. Last year, services were provided to 4,800 individuals, and this year – to 1,800 individuals.

“Nearly 15 million Ukrainians will soon need, or already require, mental health support – including servicemembers, veterans, children, older adults, and IDPs. This is the estimate of the National Institute for Strategic Studies. To ensure that such assistance is as accessible as possible, 218 Resilience Centers – supported by the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program ‘How Are You?’ – are already operating in 23 regions of the country,” Olena Zelenska said.

2/ The prosecution had requested that the detainees remain in custody. Prosecutor Vazha Todua stated that no new circumstances have emerged in the case. He also argued that there is still a risk of the accused fleeing or committing new offenses.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) May 2, 2025 at 6:28 AM

3/ Defence attorneys argued that the prosecution’s position was unfounded, formulaic, and lacked justification. They said the grounds cited by the prosecution were merely formal and that there was no real basis for continued detention.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) May 2, 2025 at 6:28 AM

4/ The defence also proposed alternative measures to pretrial detention. However, the judge deemed the risks cited by the prosecution—flight and reoffending—as still present and relevant, and decided to uphold the pretrial detention.

The US:

As Putin digs in, Trump approves F-16 training deal for Ukraine

Pentagon greenlit a $310 million package for Ukraine, as peace talks with Russia stall.

euromaidanpress.com/2025/05/03/a…

— Euromaidan Press (@euromaidanpress.bsky.social) May 2, 2025 at 5:38 PM

From EuroMaidan Press:

The Pentagon announced that the US State Department has approved a potential $310.5 million sale of F-16 training, sustainment, and related equipment to Ukraine.

According to a Pentagon statement, the proposed sale “will improve Ukraine’s capability to meet current and future threats by ensuring its pilots are effectively trained and by increasing its interoperability with the United States through comprehensive training with the US Air Force.”

The package includes aircraft modifications, personnel training, spare parts, ground handling equipment, software support, technical documentation, and logistics services.

The Pentagon noted that the sale supports international coalition efforts to establish Ukraine’s F-16 program and contributes to the broader modernization of its air force.

Principal contractors include Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Pratt & Whitney, BAE Systems, AAR Corporation, Valiant Integrated Services, Top Aces Corporation, Snap-on Inc., and Comsetra, LLC.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has submitted the required certification to Congress, notifying lawmakers of the proposed sale.

Despite continued US support, the future of military aid to Ukraine remains uncertain. In March 2025, President Donald Trump ordered a suspension of all US military assistance after a contentious Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The pause aimed to pressure Kyiv into engaging in peace talks with Russia, citing frustration with Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts.

Military aid resumed after Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown little willingness to compromise.

Additionally, the US is providing decommissioned F-16s to Ukraine for spare parts to support its expanding fleet of European-donated jets.

So we are back to where we were three months ago: the war will be over when the Russians stop fighting

www.euronews.com/my-europe/20…

— Anne Applebaum (@anneapplebaum.bsky.social) May 2, 2025 at 5:57 PM

From EuroNews:

The State Department announcement marks a significant shift in Washington’s approach and comes after months of stalled diplomatic efforts to get Kyiv and Moscow to agree to a deal to end Russia’s three-year war.

The United States says it remains committed to peace efforts in Ukraine but intends to scale back its role as mediator, the US State Department has said.

“We are not going to fly around the world at the drop of a hat to mediate meetings; that is now between the two parties, and now is the time that they need to present and develop concrete ideas about how this conflict is going to end,” spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters.

The announcement marks a significant shift in Washington’s approach and comes after months of stalled diplomatic efforts to get Kyiv and Moscow to agree to a deal to end Russia’s war, now in its fourth year.

In April, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington may be ready to “move on” from ceasefire efforts if no progress was made soon.

After weeks of efforts by the Trump administration to broker a ceasefire failed to end the fighting, Rubio said the US administration wants to decide “in a matter of days whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks.”

I’m not sure that is a bad thing.

From UAWire:

Ukraine’s military intelligence conducted a drone strike on a pivotal Russian military facility, according to reports from Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR). The operation targeted a site of paramount importance: space reconnaissance facilities operated by Russian forces in the Stavropol Krai region. The aerial attack was executed on Military Unit No. 33443 “Zvezda,” stationed in the village of Moskovskoye, Stavropol Krai, as reported by Ukrinform citing internal sources.

This particular military facility falls under the Russian electronic reconnaissance system and is a part of the GRU of the Russian General Staff. Local authorities in Stavropol have corroborated the occurrence of the assault, noting thankfully that there have been no casualties reported. It’s worth mentioning that Ukrainian forces previously targeted this military unit, leveraging drone technology during their attacks last year.

In a separate but related effort, GUR’s cyber specialists recently launched an attack on the infrastructure of major Russian internet service providers, leaving thousands of Russians without internet access.

In Russia’s Dagestan, the pre-May 9 Victory Day fanaticism forces kindergartners into mock military parades, dressed in tiny uniforms and waving flags, shamefully exploiting young children to fuel patriotic propaganda.

Friday Evening Open Thread: An Inspiration for Us All

Because the reporting across outlets hasn’t mentioned it I want to stress that Justice Jackson referenced the courageous & resolute stance of federal judges J. Shelly Wright in Louisiana and Frank Johnson in Alabama who issued school desegregation orders in the face of “Massive Resistance” to Brown.

From the NyTimes, “Attacks on Judges Undermine Democracy, Warns Justice Jackson” [gift link]

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the Supreme Court’s newest member, denounced on Thursday what she described as “relentless attacks” on judges, and an environment of harassment that “ultimately risks undermining our Constitution and the rule of law.”

“ Across the nation, judges are facing increased threats of not only physical violence, but also professional retaliation just for doing our jobs,” said Justice Jackson, speaking at a conference for judges held in Puerto Rico. “And the attacks are not random. They seem designed to intimidate those of us who serve in this critical capacity.”

Justice Jackson did not mention President Trump by name nor cite any specific attacks against judges. However, her remarks came as Mr. Trump and his allies have repeatedly targeted judges who have blocked key pieces of his agenda, even calling for judges who have ruled against him to be impeached…

The forceful comments by Justice Jackson were rare for the justice. Since joining the court in 2022, she has focused many of her public appearances on telling the personal story of her rise to become the first Black woman on the Supreme Court.

One notable appearance came in 2023, when she spoke from the pulpit of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham less than three months after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in higher education and offered explicit nod to her own role in history.

But on Thursday, she opened her remarks to a ballroom full of judges, lawyers and jurists by saying that she wanted to address “the elephant in the room.”

She noted that individual district court judges — several of whom have been assigned major cases dealing with Mr. Trump’s actions and faced attacks for their work — face particular pressure in the legal system.

“It can sometimes take raw courage to remain steadfast in doing what the law requires,” she said.

Before her elevation to the appellate court and then the Supreme Court, Justice Jackson served on the district court bench in Washington with Judge James E. Boasberg, who has been a particular target of Mr. Trump’s ire because of his rulings seeking to block the deportation of Venezuelan migrants. The two were also neighbors.

Justice Jackson criticized the targeting of judges for doing their job, and said those attacks have a bigger, more structural impact for the democratic system.

“A society in which judges are routinely made to fear for their own safety or their own livelihood due to their decisions is one that has substantially departed from the norms of behavior that govern a democratic system,” said Justice Jackson, during her participation as keynote speaker at the First Circuit Judicial Conference. “Attacks on judicial independence is how countries that are not free, not fair, and not rule of law oriented, operate.”…

Justice Jackson’s remarks were greeted with a standing ovation.

This post is in: Cat Blogging, Open Threads

Looks like we need an open thread. Here’s some lighter fare for you: I have a couple of strays who’ve been visiting regularly since around Christmas time. Crusty Oliver is a white cat with grey bits, obviously an unfixed male who often turns up looking fresh from a fight. Nervous Chuck is a big brown tabby with something strange going on with his back hips (note, however, that I haven’t confirmed Chuck is male – could be a lady).

Yesterday I mopped the floor in the kitchen/diner, which opens on the patio. I propped open the back door to help the floor dry faster, left the room to put the mop away, and when I came back, a catnip fish that had been lying on the mat was now outside, being mauled by Nervous Chuck.

Crusty is down with the ‘nip as well.

I guess it’s nice that they’re sharing. (And yes, I’ll be weeding and re-filling the spaces in the patio slabs soon.)
