Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

We still have time to mess this up!

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

The words do not have to be perfect.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

I also want to share this fun roundup from the fellow at Status Kuo.

He calls these posts Just for Skeets and Giggles, and it’s too good not to share – a nice lighthearted collection of things gleaned from here and there over the previous week.  All political, of course, mocking the (dangerous) clowns that are running the country.

He links to Seth Myers mocking the 9 different ways he displayed dementia in a single clip of the orange guy.

He’s got a tweet from a fellow who wrote this:

Too Good Not To Share

An absolutely awesome one-minute TikTok video riffing on American being (not) great again.

Followed by some guy named Jason Salmon (look for the link to some guy wearing a lime green shirt) that is totally worth watching.

I want to add this image directly, because I’m sure I’ll be suing using this one again.

I didn’t include direct links to most of these because I think Jay Kuo deserves the clicks for putting it all together.  And his substack articles are typically interesting and well thought out.

Also, his sort-of-twitter links go the mirror site that doesn’t give any clicks to the devil site.

Sunday Afternoon Open Thread

by Betty Cracker|  October 12, 20251:48 pm| 35 Comments

This post is in: Birdwatching, Open Threads

We’re having a lazy Sunday, mostly lolling around on the sofa watching football, which started early since there was a game in London. It’s chilly by our standards, and all the windows are open, so we’ve been snuggling with the dogs under blankets.

However, a small flock of Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks landed noisily on the shady, muddy bank of the lagoon about 15 minutes ago, and that was enough to get me outside with the Nikon to sneak up for a few shots. The ducks were not amused:

A pair of chestnut colored ducks with black undercarriages, white-edged wings and pink bills and legs.
This Great Blue Heron observed the ducks’ nervous distress from a sunlit sandbar in the river about 30 yards away:

Long-necked wading bird standing in shallow water.

Since the birds were clearly pissed about a hairless pink ape crashing the party, I went back inside to resume watching football. Probably nothing else will tempt me back to the riverbank, unless it’s an otter. Or a flamingo, obviously.

War for Ukraine Day 1,325: Gremlins from the Kremlin

The cost:

On Oct 10, energy workers from Chernihivoblenergo were returning from repair work when a Russian drone hit their car. After the first blast, they rushed to save a wounded colleague. That’s when Russia hit them again.

Anatolii Savchenko, crane operator, and Ruslan Deineha, driver, were both killed

The little green men have made an appearance at the Estonian border!

Estonia has urgently closed part of its border with Russia following the appearance of armed “little green men,” ERR reports‼️

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) October 11, 2025 at 3:29 PM

“We’ve observed large, heavily armed groups engaging in suspicious activity. These are clearly not border guards, and the situation poses a real threat,” Estonian border officials stated.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) October 11, 2025 at 3:29 PM

More seriously, this is exceedingly ungood. Now I know some of you are thinking and likely to comment that there is no way that Putin could successfully invade Estonian given how bogged down he is in western Ukraine where his forces have spent almost four years getting a lot of Russian troops and equipment blown up in exchange for taking a couple of kilometers of land. And because Estonia is a NATO member. First, this would be a very different type of operation. Specifically one that Russia is very good at. They’ve successfully infiltrated their little green men into Moldova carving off and creating the organized crime statelet of Transnistria, into Georgia where they’ve captured two regions, and into Ukraine where they did the same thing in Luhansk and Crimea and a good chunk of Donetsk. In all three cases local traitors working on Russia’s behalf and Russian personnel have held these gains. In the case of Moldova and Ukraine, the little green men were a mixture of local traitors aligned with Russia, Black Sea Cossacks, and Spetznaz. The Georgian op was just local traitors and Spetznaz. Second, that was part of the effectiveness of the Moldovan, Georgian, and Ukrainian invasions: enough local traitors working for and with Russians to muddy the waters enough to provide local cover for the invasion. NATO is not going to get involved in something that can be portrayed as a local and internal matter. We don’t know yet who these little green men are in regard to Estonia, but the Estonians are off to a good start trying to prevent the incursion.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Today, I Received the Necessary Signals That the U.S. Is Considering Ways to Strengthen Our Cooperation – Address by the President

11 October 2025 – 18:48

I wish you good health, fellow Ukrainians!

First of all, I want to thank all our people working practically around the clock to restore electricity after all these Russian strikes. A lot has been done in Kyiv, in the Kyiv region, and in the eastern regions. Due to Russian shelling, restoration is significantly complicated in the Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Sumy regions. Last night, the Russians struck Odesa – it was a deliberate attack on our critical infrastructure. A significant number of drones were shot down, but sadly, not all. Odesa’s energy infrastructure was hit. Every effort is being made to repair and restore electricity. I expect an update on this after 8 p.m.

Today, we have already held several important international conversations, and it’s energy – energy that remains central. We are working closely with our partners to ensure sufficient support. There will be further talks in the coming days. This is about equipment that we are stockpiling in reserve for the winter, as well as currently using in our communities, wherever it’s needed. It’s also about necessary funding. And of course, air defense: only air defense systems, once their numbers are sufficient, can guarantee protection. We are working to secure missiles for these systems.

I spoke with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in great detail about our energy sector, about ways to strengthen our air defense capabilities. I also informed him of the situation in Odesa and other cities and communities. I am grateful for his willingness to help. President Trump asked about the situation in the capital and our other regions. The world sees what Russia is doing and how it tries to take advantage, while global leaders focus on ending the war in the Middle East.

Chances are good that the deal will be effective there. And the greater the peace and security in one region, the more opportunities it brings to everyone in the world. Ukraine always calls on the world from this very position to support our defense, to support our work here, in Europe, for the sake of security.

Unfortunately, Russia is a terrorist that seeks every opportunity to strike harder – especially when global attention is focused elsewhere – even when it is already clear that they in Russia remain the sole, literally last, source of this full-scale war. We count on the United States and all our partners to continue acting decisively and exerting strong pressure so that our people feel support, have protection, and Ukraine can stand strong.

Today, I received the necessary signals that the U.S. is considering ways to strengthen our cooperation. Thank you. I also spoke today with the Prime Minister of Canada, also, primarily focusing on our air defense and energy needs. Our PURL initiative is going well, enabling us to purchase American weapons, including missiles for the Patriots. I thank all NATO partners already in the program, and we will be grateful to Canada for expanding its involvement.

We also coordinated our contacts with other leaders and other countries. Following today’s conversations with leaders, I have already given the necessary instructions to our team: the military, the Office, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Results must be delivered.

I thank all those who stand with us, I thank all those who stand with Ukraine! And I thank everyone who is supporting our people, who is helping our state, who is helping our communities and all those in need right now. It is vital to support one another – then all of Ukraine will grow stronger.

Glory to Ukraine!

Curious: Black & White, or Gray?

by WaterGirl|  October 11, 20254:30 pm| 102 Comments

This post is in: Justice, Open Threads

So I was thinking about Law & Order just now as I was doing some baking.

The current lead prosecutor on Law & Order is a pompous, self-righteous prick who pisses me off in nearly every show.  He also regularly pisses off the other lead prosecutor, a woman, who is always second chair.  She does not share his black & white view of the world.

Anyway, he absolutely sees the world in black and white and he refuses to take the big picture into account.  It’s all about the win; he could care less about the people or about extenuating circumstances.  He doesn’t care who is destroyed in the process.

All of which led me to think about the current polarizing state of affairs and everything that has led up to it, and I wondered whether I now see the world more black & white than I used to, or whether I now see more gray.

The answer isn’t immediately obvious to me, which is what made the question interesting.  But I can say with confidence that I care a lot more about justice than I do about the letter of the law.  And I am generally a lot more “spirit of the law” than “letter of the law”.  So maybe that’s my answer?

But now I’m curious.  What about you guys?  Do you feel you see the world as more black and white than you used to, or more gray?  Which trumps the other – justice or letter of the law?   I would love to hear your thoughts around all of this, as well as what colors your answer.

Man I'm not sure that they've thought this through.
Missing paychecks to the military historically has… not gone well for the head of state.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) October 11, 2025 at 12:40 PM

Per CNN:

… It’s the most dramatic step yet by Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Speaker Mike Johnson to attempt to force Democrats to end the government shutdown, even as they realize their party will, too, face political pain for the move. And it comes at a high-stakes moment for both parties: This will be the first time in recent history that active-duty military service members will miss a paycheck on a large scale during a shutdown.

But behind the scenes, Thune and Johnson have agreed that Republicans can make no attempts to lessen the pain they argue Democrats are causing millions of Americans by rejecting the GOP’s plan to simply extend current funding — concerned that if Congress took that step, Democrats would face less pressure to reopen the government, according to multiple GOP leadership sources.

As the shutdown drags into its third week, tensions are rising in the GOP with no clear way out. Lawmakers are angry at one another for getting into now-viral hallway confrontations with Democrats or doing high-profile interviews where they blame their own party for the lapse. Some are angry at GOP leadership for failing to address the military pay issue from the start, or for the optics of keeping the House out of session for weeks on end. But those CNN spoke with expressed an acute anger at Senate Democrats.

“I’m going back to DC. I’ve had enough,” GOP Rep. Kevin Kiley of California, who has raised his concerns with House GOP leadership, said. “I just can’t fathom why we would not be there.”

show full post on front page

Also, my constituents? *Extremely* whiny & annoying, in person!

But Thune and Johnson are publicly resolute in their position and the party remains in lockstep on big-picture strategy: Republicans will make no guarantee on Affordable Care Act subsidies and the only way out of a shutdown is for Senate Democrats to retreat, despite any political pain that the GOP will feel in the coming days and weeks over the missed paychecks, according to interviews with two dozen lawmakers and senior aides. It underscores the depth of Congress’ ugly stalemate, with Democrats equally dug in.

“We’re in a bind as Republicans, but they’re in a huge bind as Democrats,” Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey said, summing up the party’s mood. Even Van Drew, who believes the party does need to take action on the expiring subsidies, was clear that Democrats must be the ones to yield…

Inside the upper rungs of leadership, Republicans have been astounded by Democrats’ continued rejection of a bill to extend Biden-era funding levels and their hardline position on the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies. But publicly and privately, GOP lawmakers in both chambers have expressed they believe the public will ultimately support their argument — despite some early polling favoring Democrats — and are prepared to let the shutdown drag on until Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer backs down.

“We think we’re winning this argument,” one GOP campaign operative said, summing up the party’s overarching position…

Republicans also insist Democrats are making a major miscalculation in their shutdown demands.

Democrats have said they will not agree to reopen the government until they have a concrete deal to prevent billions of dollars in those subsidies from lapsing at year’s end.

But Republicans are privately not sure if there will be a deal at all. Senior members of GOP leadership in both chambers are unsure whether any version of a subsidies measure can pass with enough Republican votes. Any deal would would likely require extended negotiations, with clear buy-in from Trump — and Congress is running out of time.

Some center-right Republicans have been vocal about the need to do something about the deadline: They acknowledge that many of those receiving subsidies are their own voters and that the party can’t afford politically to simply let that lapse…

The only meaningful line in this, imho, is the fact that GOP leadership is completely gobsmacked that dems have dug in.
They literally just expected they could say "lol no" and Schumer would give them the votes.

Which means it's more than they think they're winning the fight or w/e, it's that they literally don't have a plan.

This is an odd assessment, imho, because the WH actually doesn't really care about congressional priorities and the first real time it encountered them, the entire thing fell apart and the government shut down.
Most of the WH is about pulling levers where congress has given it power.

They care relatively little about passing any bills, because most of what they want to do is in the grey areas of executive power.
So yeah, this strikes me as dumb. Especially when congress is literally about to revolt on the Epstein files as soon as Grivalja gets sworn in.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 10:16 PM

There is a misjudgment of "this congress is heinously dysfunctional and can't pass bills" as "we are owning congress like little babies."
They actually are relatively inept when it comes to managing congress, as they can't get anything through a friendly one.

From the replies:

yeah honestly what Johnson and Trump are doing rn is akin to a prime minister abruptly proroguing parliament. it’s a last resort, something you do to buy time when you’re afraid you’re going to be embarrassed or challenged on the floor

what we have here is a “strongman” terrified of the House coming back into session

******

This is what it looks like when one side is about to cave on a shutdown. How do I know? I had a front-row seat as as an aide to the House GOP leadership during the very first shutdown, in the 1995 battle with Clinton. When they get nervous and defensive like this, they're looking for a way out.

The only real obstacle is that if they reconvene and pass a CR, they're going to have to deal with the Epstein discharge petition. And Speaker Johnson seems like he REALLY doesn't want to do that, with an intensity I can't fully explain.

This won’t stop until russia tastes its own pill. Every effort to manage escalation has only led to impunity and more escalation.

Only One Response Can Be Given to Russian Terror: More Strength, Air Defenses, and Pressure on Russia, So That They Are Truly Held Accountable for Everything – Address by the President

10 October 2025 – 21:31

Dear Ukrainians!

All day long, recovery efforts have been underway following the Russian strike. It’s a great deal of work. Electricity has already been restored for more than 725,000 families: Kyiv and the Kyiv region, the Dnipro and Kirovohrad regions, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv. The situation remains difficult in the Sumy region, as well as in the Kharkiv, Kherson, and Donetsk regions, due to security challenges, which complicate repair work. During the day, there were new drone attacks, shelling, and air raid alerts. Work is still ongoing in our capital.

Where necessary, energy companies have arranged for scheduled electricity supplies. In Kyiv and the Kirovohrad region, water supply restoration efforts continued throughout the day. In Kyiv, it is almost fully restored; in the Kirovohrad region, the pumps are being restarted, and the system is being refilled.

The task for all our regions is to ensure sufficient backup power for water utilities. In some communities, this has already been implemented, and it should be extended to those where we currently observe the relevant issues. Today’s strike has resulted in casualties, particularly in Kyiv and the regions, at energy facilities. Everyone is receiving assistance. Tragically, in Zaporizhzhia, the Russians have killed a child – the boy was 7 years old – my condolences.

Putin is clearly taking advantage of the moment while the world is almost entirely focused on the prospect of establishing peace in the Middle East. Most countries, all key leaders, have their attention fixed on what is happening there. And this is truly a good opportunity to achieve real peace in that region after so many victims. And this is a new low in Russian depravity – to intensify terrorist strikes at a moment like this, hitting the very lives of our people. Just last night alone, nearly 500 drones were launched in multiple waves, about 200 of them “shaheds,” also 32 missiles, mostly ballistic ones. Only one response can be given to this: more strength, more air defenses to protect our critical infrastructure, and increased pressure on Russia so that they are truly held accountable for everything they do. Sanctions must be tightened. We have discussed it with partners. Russian assets must be fully used primarily to strengthen our defense, to strengthen us, and ensure our recovery.

Today, I also spoke with the President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, about financial means to support Ukraine. We also discussed our energy system and our resilience.

I also had a call today with President Stubb of Finland. He met with the President of the United States the day before. We discussed our current steps, which contacts could help protect lives and restrain this terrorist in Moscow.

I spoke with Prime Minister Starmer of the United Kingdom – and we are counting on strong UK support in these difficult circumstances. We discussed the prospects of UK participation in the PURL initiative. It is a robust initiative that enables us to procure American weapons. This is really important. The things that protect us. In particular, it means missiles for the Patriots.

Today, I also spoke with Chancellor Merz of Germany. I informed him of the situation and the consequences of the Russian strike. I am very grateful to him, and I am grateful to Germany for the air defense systems already in place to protect Ukraine. We discussed with Mr. Chancellor the Russian intentions and our shared ability to defend ourselves and ensure protection.

I am grateful for the support to all partners who truly help through their actions, and not just words.

I held a Staff meeting today – naturally about energy, which is a key issue. But there were also reports regarding the front: in the Dobropillia areas, our forces thwarted another Russian attempt to strike our positions.

I held a meeting with everyone responsible for the international agenda: the Government, the Head of the Office, and the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. The tasks are clear. We know them: which countries can help Ukraine with additional air defense systems and compatible missiles. What is needed here is precisely the result I spoke about with the leaders. We have agreements at the leaders’ level; now we need efforts on the level of all our teams, and we need the corresponding results. We know which other countries can join the PURL initiative, and I expect concrete outcomes from our communication with those countries. Our diplomats must become even more proactive in this regard. And third is sanctions. The pause without new, strong sanctions against Russia for this war has lasted far too long.

And additionally, I want to commend all our people – everyone who has been working since morning: our power engineers, our repair crews, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, public utility workers – everyone working to restore electricity to our cities and villages, to make sure our people have light, water, and, most importantly, life without terrorists, without Moscow, without war.

We must stay strong and fight together for our state and for our people. Thank you! We are grateful to everyone.

Glory to Ukraine!

2/ Papuashvili said he found Hipper’s statements, in which the European Commission spokesperson criticized the actions of Georgian Dream, unacceptable.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 9:08 AM

3/ For example, on October 9, Anita Hipper stated that the actions of Georgian Dream were inspired by the “Russian propaganda manual.”

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 9:08 AM

4/ Hipper had made a similar statement on October 6 – this is how the European Commission spokesperson characterized Georgian Dream’s disinformation about the European Union, as well as its attacks on the EU Ambassador to Georgia.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 9:08 AM

5/ “For ten days after that, I personally drew attention to this almost every day and called on them to clarify: to separate the gathering for the overthrow. However, there was zero reaction. On October the overthrow failed, and now they do not want to share responsibility”

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 9:08 AM

6/ I said before that if there had been violence there, the European Commission would have shared responsibility for that violence precisely because of the spokesperson’s statement.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 9:08 AM

7/ The spokesperson made this statement twice after the failed attempt to overthrow the government on October 4, and both times attacked the Georgian government instead of condemning the actions of the perpetrators and the storming of the presidential palace.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 9:08 AM

8/ This is a feeble attempt to evade responsibility — for what he did, in particular, for encouraging external support for the attempted overthrow of the government planned for October 4,” said the Georgian Dream parliamentary chairman.

1/ The founder of Batumelebi/Netgazeti, Mzia Amaglobeli, has been named the recipient of the World Press Freedom Hero Award. The award is established by the International Press Institute (IPI-IMS). A total of seven journalists have been named as recipients of the 2025 award.

2/ According to the statement released, many of the awardees have experienced imprisonment, repression, and relentless attempts to silence their work, “yet they have continued to report with remarkable resilience and commitment to journalism.”

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 5:55 AM

3/ The award ceremony will take place in Vienna on October 24, during the IPI’s 75th anniversary congress.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 5:55 AM

4/ Georgian Dream is not happy about this. GD stated that granting the award to Amaglobeli “is a continuation of the unjust political attitude toward Georgia and represents yet another mockery of Georgian society.”

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 5:55 AM

5/ Presenting the Hero Award to Mzia Amaglobeli clearly shows the dire state of the international media, the international press…” — was said at today’s briefing.

— WarTranslated (Dmitri) (@wartranslated.bsky.social) October 10, 2025 at 6:45 AM

From Reuters:

KAUNAS, Lithuania, Oct 10 (Reuters) – Alarmed by Russia’s vast military spending since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the three Baltic states are drawing up contingency plans to deal with the possibility of hundreds of thousands of people fleeing a Russian troop buildup or attack.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have long voiced fears to fellow NATO states about possible Russian aggression, citing Russian cyber attacks, disinformation campaigns and incursions over the past few months by Russian fighter jets and drones.

Russia says it has no plans to attack NATO. But the three countries, which were annexed by Moscow during World War Two, have doubled defence spending since the all-out attack on Ukraine that followed repeated Russian denials of any such plan.

“Threats could vary,” said Renatas Pozela, who as head of Lithuania’s firefighting service is involved in the contingency planning, which has been stepped up since the three countries agreed to cooperate on civil protection in May. Details of the numbers of potential evacuees officials are preparing for are being reported here for the first time.

“It’s possible we will see a mighty army along the borders of the Baltics, with the apparent goal of taking all three countries in three days to a week,” Pozela said.

Sabotage of communications or transport links, a mass influx of migrants, civil unrest among Russian-speaking minorities or fake news sparking mass flight are other scenarios discussed in local media and beyond.

“We talk about this every month, every week – at work, everywhere,” said Arminas Raudys, 31, a volunteer playing the role of an evacuee in an exercise in Lithuania this week.

The role-play involved the evacuation of just a hundred people from the capital Vilnius, but officials interviewed by Reuters said contingency planning – still largely under wraps – was being made for much larger numbers.

Half of those living within 40 km (25 miles) of the borders of Russia and Belarus – about 400,000 people – are among them, Pozela said.

The western town of Kaunas has plans to house 300,000 people in schools, universities, Catholic churches and the arena where Robbie Williams and Roger Waters performed recently. Similar efforts are underway in other towns.

Assembly points, including in Vilnius, have been selected, trains and buses designated and supplies such as toilet paper and hiking beds stockpiled in warehouses, an official at the firefighting service said.

Those fleeing by car would be directed to secondary roads, to clear others for the incoming army, with a map already available showing the towns where they can seek refuge.

“It’s a very reassuring message to our society that we are ready and we are planning,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys told Reuters. “We have done our homework.”

⚡️Hungarian spies ran a covert operation in Brussels, trying to recruit EU officials, a joint investigation finds.

— UNITED24 Media (@united24media.com) October 9, 2025 at 6:15 AM

From United24 Media:

Hungarian intelligence operatives are believed to have run espionage activities in Brussels for years — and even attempted to recruit European Union officials, according to a joint investigation by Spiegel, De Tijd, and Direkt36, published on October 9.

The probe identifies one suspected agent, known only as “V.,” who was stationed in Brussels from 2015 to 2017 under diplomatic cover. Investigators say he sought to recruit an official from the European Commission.

According to the EU official who spoke with journalists, V. appeared interested not only in internal Commission affairs but also in gossip and rumors, meeting with him every few months under the guise of friendly conversation. He reportedly proposed ways to advance more Hungarians into key EU positions—and later offered money, which the official declined, Spiegel reported.

Embassy documents confirm that V. worked in the Hungarian delegation’s department for cohesion policy in 2015 under then-ambassador Olivér Várhelyi, now the EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement.

The investigation suggests that growing pressure from Budapest to produce intelligence likely led to V.’s exposure in 2017. As the Orbán government escalated its demands for information, agents began using unsecured communication channels, increasing the risk of detection. Several EU officials also reported suspicious recruitment attempts by V., though Belgium’s State Security Service said it could neither confirm nor deny the claims.

According to Spiegel, despite the failed mission, V. continued to advance his career. Last year, he authored an article in a Hungarian military intelligence journal discussing the “current challenges” facing the intelligence community. The publication listed him as a lieutenant colonel with Hungary’s Information Office—the country’s primary foreign intelligence agency.

Spiegel also reports that at least two other suspected Hungarian agents drew attention in Brussels during the same period for overly aggressive networking efforts.

In a separate investigation, DeTijd and Direkt36 revealed that Hungarian operatives had tracked investigators from the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) who were probing corruption allegations linked to a company owned by the son-in-law of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán openly opposed Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union, declaring that Hungarians “do not want to be in the European Union together with Ukrainians.”

I’ve seen reporting that the Hungarian handler is now an EU commissioner.

From DW:

Building such secret networks within European institutions is more commonly associated with hostile nations such as Russia or China rather than EU member states.

A decade ago, IH intelligence officers in Brussels began working undercover whiled designated as diplomats, which offers them greater protection and freedom. This is a modus operandi for many intelligence agencies but countries such as Russia are particularly notorious for it.

It is striking that the Hungarian intelligence service categorizes its moles in the EU institutions according to old Soviet KGB designations. Those who agree verbally are called “trusted domestic contacts,” while those who sign an agreement fall into the category of “secret collaborators.”

According to journalists, the current European Commissioner responsible for health and animal welfare, Oliver Varhelyi, was found to be aggressively supervising these activities.

Varhelyi headed the Hungarian Permanent Representation to the EU when V. worked as a diplomat in Brussels. The reporters’ sources claimed to have no doubt that Varhelyi, in that capacity, knew that undercover intelligence officers were present in his diplomatic corps.

According to an insider, Varhelyi also “visited the IH leadership [in Budapest] on several occasions and gave presentations on EU affairs.” And the investigators allege that it was under his leadership at the EU representation, from 2015 to the end of 2019, that the practices of Hungarian spy diplomats in Brussels became so aggressive.
