It’s Up to Us, Next Up: Quick Stop In Arizona for Summer School (and returning again in September)

This post is in: Open Threads, Political Action, Political Fundraising, Targeted Political Fundraising 2023-24

This is my favorite sign from the marches in 2017.

It’s not just that we actually know how to spell; our side is fun and clever, and they are not.  They may have all the best people (no they don’t!) but we definitely have the best people – and the best signs!

women in pink pussy hats at a march, holding a sign that says “You know it’s bad when the librarians are marching"

Okay, the SUMMER SCHOOL reference is a bit of poetic license.  I’m talking about Worker Power Leadership School, and with your help, we’ll be raising $15,000 to cover the cost of one future leader to attend Leadership School.

This project with Worker Power hits all the sweet spots for me.  In the Spring, we funded a team of 10 people for 3 weeks to get people registered.  This summer (now) we’ll be funding someone who can attend Leadership School where they can can learn the skills to allow them to be a great leader of a 10-person canvass team in the fall.  The person we fund for Leadership School may or may not be the team leader for our team again in the fall when we fund 3 weeks of a 10-person GOTV team in September.

*can I just say that I am STILL getting ads for boots because when we were funding Worker Power in the spring, I searched for images of boots so I could add a new image each time we raised another $1,000 in the thermometer.  Stupid Google, wasting all these months trying to sell me boots.

Worker Power Leadership School

We are raising funds to send one person to Leadership School. Our $15,000 will cover housing + training for a campaign leader who will lead a canvass team of 10 to knock on over 25,000 doors during this election year!

We all know that the 2024 election on November 5th will decide whether our Democracy as we know it survives, and the swing state of Arizona is a major path to victory for the Presidential, House, and Senate races.

In the coming weeks, Worker Power will run once again the largest field operation in Arizona and knock on over 1.1 million doors! They will hire over 500 canvassers to deliver the White House, secure our Democratic U.S. Senate seat, and flip Congressional Districts 1 and 6, giving us a path to control of the House!

To keep Arizona blue, they created the Worker Power Leadership School, a free, month-long, in-residence training program educating the next generation of organizers to run strong field campaigns.

Building on the successes of 2022, when they secured the Governorship, Secretary of State, and Attorney General’s office in Arizona and the U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, the Worker Power Leadership School will offer 150 hours of campaign training to 24 organizers, guided by some of the nation’s top strategists.

Following their graduation in August, these 24 organizers will lead a team of 10 canvassers who will help knock on over 1.1 million doors!

Is this effort something you guys can get behind?  I am so fucking tired of waiting for the corrupt Supreme Court.  I am so fucking tired of waiting for Cannon to  make a move that will allow the 11th Circuit to slap her down.  We are not without agency, even when it feels like we are in limbo.   Let’s do this!

Air raid alert map of Ukraine from 7;25 PM EDT on 26 June 2024. 4/5ths of Ukraine Is currently under air raid alert!

Quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is still doing well. Thank you all, again, for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, another long day, so I’m going to keep this short.

As you can see from the map above at 7:25 PM EDT about 4/5ths of Ukraine is currently under air raid alert. And now at 7:55 PM, all of Ukraine is under air raid alert. And as you can see in the image below, twi MiG-31Ks are inbound. Though one is partially obscured in the upper right of the map.

Air raid alert map of Ukraine in Ukrainian as of 7:55 PM EDT. All of Ukraine is under air raid alert and a MiG-31K is inbound.

Earlier today Russia hit Kharkiv again with more glide bombs.

And again! Kharkiv is shuddering with explosions! https://t.co/YmYfLGLJzU

I’m Grateful to Everyone Who Is Truly Giving Their All to Ensure Our Donetsk Region Stands Firm – Address by the President

26 June 2024 – 10:21

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

I started this day in the Donetsk region, together with our warriors, together with Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi and the new Commander of the Joint Forces, General Hnatov. Today, I officially introduced Andriy Hnatov to all those responsible for defense in the Donetsk region. He is a young man, but his knowledge of the frontline and experience are exactly what is needed. General Hnatov’s task is clear – to destroy the occupier and, very importantly, to save as many lives of our warriors as possible.

Together with the Commander-in-Chief, we listened to the reports directly from the positions. I was pleased to personally visit and thank our 110th and 47th brigades – absolutely heroic and efficient men. I thanked our combat medics, the men and women who do the most important work – stabilizing the wounded, saving lives, providing maximum support. It is very touching to see such dedication and willingness to help.

Here in the Donetsk region, I held a detailed meeting on security and support for the people. We addressed many issues – ensuring the essentials of life such as water, social issues, evacuation, assistance for defense, and the restoration of housing. I am grateful to everyone who is truly giving their all to ensure our Donetsk region stands firm. There will be a separate conversation in Kyiv, particularly with officials who must be here and in other areas near the frontline – in difficult communities where people need immediate solutions. Solutions that simply cannot be seen from Kyiv. I was surprised to learn that some relevant officials have not been here for six months or more. There will be a serious conversation, and I will draw appropriate conclusions regarding them.

Glory to Ukraine!

President Zelenskyy also made a battlefield circulation to the Pokrovsk direction:

Kharkiv Oblast:

First tweet from the thread, the rest from the Thread Reader App:

Russia’s operation on the northern side of Kharkiv has lasted over six weeks. There have been serious difficulties at both operational and strategic level.

While the offensive is stuck, satellite images show the Russians have begun fortifying the newly occupied areas. 1/🧵 pic.twitter.com/81mAUS1g08

— Emil Kastehelmi (@emilkastehelmi) June 26, 2024

The Kharkiv operation had three probable goals:

1. Create confusion and tie Ukrainian reserves to a secondary direction, so that progress could be made elsewhere

2. Form a “buffer zone” between Belgorod and Ukraine

3. Possibly get parts of Kharkiv within artillery range

2/

Russia was able to tie some Ukrainian forces to Kharkiv, but it wasn’t able to exploit the initial momentum elsewhere on the front. In this situation, Russia has to divide its forces and spend manpower on a less important area, while progress is slow everywhere. 3/Image

Ukraine stabilized the front relatively quickly and have began limited counterattacks.

Recently, Ukrainians have taken back areas in Vovchansk, Starytsia and Hlyboke, while Russians have made no additional gains. The city of Kharkiv is still far away from Russian artillery. 4/Image

The so-called buffer zone is small, and increasing it would require additional forces.

Russia has begun preparations to hold on to their gains. New satellite images reveal they’re constructing fortifications north of Vovchansk, near the border on the Ukrainian side. 5/

The new fortifications are 150-400 meters long trenches, built north and west of Vovchansk.

As the Sentinel images are very low-resolution, I double-checked some these from high-resolution imagery, which I unfortunately can’t publish here. 6/

The newly fortified zone is 2,5 km deep at most, and around 6 km wide – not very effective against Ukrainian operations towards Belgorod.

However, the work has started only recently, and it’s very possible there will be more new fortifications in the coming weeks. 7/Image

The Russians clearly do not want to lose what little they have achieved, which isn’t much to begin with. They have transferred a lot of excavators to this area, and Ukrainians have also damaged or destroyed over 15 of them. Rather heavy losses for engineering equipment. 8/
Russia is determined to fortify now, despite the losses. The project seems politically motivated, as there already is a proper defensive line on the Russian side of the border. It hasn’t even been tested yet, as usually border raids don’t go beyond the first villages. 9/
In the West, the Kharkiv situation caused a shift in the narrative. The urgency of supporting 🇺🇦 became a pressing issue, and 🇺🇦 was given the permission to strike 🇷🇺 with long-range western weaponry. One could ask, were the gains on the ground really worth it for Russia? 10/
The future for similar operations seems difficult. Russians might try to launch new attacks in other directions, but Ukrainians now have more opportunities to respond to such attempts. Achieving the same results in a possible next offensive is more challenging. 11/
There are some variables. Ukrainian losses are unknown, so we don’t know what is the price they’re paying for taking back these small border villages. Especially in the Vovchansk direction, throwing the Russians out of the villages doesn’t alter the general situation much. 12/

Our team at @Black_BirdGroup is looking for solutions so that we could continue publishing high-resolution satellite imagery instead of just using them internally, in order to provide more visual and fact-based analysis. 13/13

If you’re curious as to how Russia runs its subversion campaigns, this thread via the Thread Reader App provides a good example:

Nigel Farage’s claims that the West allegedly provoked the Russian invasion of Ukraine are not coming out of nowhere, and the context behind this picture from a few years ago helps understand his claims. Left: Farage, right: Nadia Borodi (Sass). 1/10Image
Borodi is originally from Ukraine, and together with her partner Oleh Voloshyn they operated an agent network in Europe on behalf of Ukrainian pro-Russian politician Viktor Medvedchuk. Left: Borodi, right: Voloshyn. 2/10Image
While still in Ukraine, and when Ukraine still tolerated (mistakenly) agents of Russian influence, both promoted pro-Kremlin politics, and actively used European politicians for their objectives. Here’s Borodi with Nicolas Bay of the French National Front/Rally. 3/10Image
Through Voloshyn/Borodi, Medvedchuk would also cooperate with the German far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD): from left to right, Oleh Voloshyn, Petr Bystron (AfD), Viktor Medvedchuk, Maximilian Krah (AfD) and Ulrich Singer (AfD). 4/10Image
One special area of interest for Medvedchuk was also the British far right: UKIP/Brexit Party (now Reform UK), and Borodi/Voloshyn actively engaged with members of Nigel Farage’s political project: Nathan Gill, David Coburn and Jonathan Arnott. Here’s Borodi with Gill. 5/10Image
Through Voloshyn and Borodi, UKIP/Brexit Party were connected to Viktor Medvedchuk’s media projects that were run by Artem Marchevsky. Here’s a panel at the European Parliament in Strasbourg in 2019 featuring David Coburn, Nathan Gill, Marchevsky and some others. 6/10Image
Voloshyn and Borodi fled Ukraine just one month before the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Medvedchuk failed to flee, was arrested and then exchanged for several Ukrainian PoWs. Marchevsky fled Ukraine and somehow settled in Czechia. 7/10Image

Neither Medvedchuk nor Marchevsky retired from pro-Russian activism. Medvedchuk started cooperating with the Russian Social Design Agency infamous for “Operation Doppelgänger”: 8/10

https://euobserver.com/news/ar53fd9f38
And as we now know, Medvedchuk and Marchevsky set up the Russian front media organisation “Voice of Europe” that was busted by the Czech intelligence earlier this year: 9/10 bbc.com/news/world-eur…
Image

Russian network that ‘paid European politicians’ busted, authorities claimPolish and Czech police say network used Russian money and popular website to push anti-Ukraine narratives.https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68685604
The “Voice of Europe” promotes Eurosceptic politicians, and especially those who voice ideas close to what Farage said about the West, Russia and Ukraine. Given the many connections between Farage’s political project and pro-Kremlin operatives, this is hardly surprising. 10/10Image

Pyongyang:

Pyongyang announced early this week that it will be sending troops in the form of a military engineering unit to support Russian forces on the ground in the Donetsk region. The troops are expected to arrive on the battlefield as soon as next month.https://t.co/eGgjj3BjUa

— Dmitri Alperovitch (@DAlperovitch) June 26, 2024

Here are the details from The Kyiv Post:

Last week, President Vladimir Putin made an official state visit to the Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea (DPRK) – North Korea, his first for almost a quarter of a century. As part of that visit Putin and Kim Jong Un signed a so-called defense pact in the North Korean capital on June 19.

The military treaty states: “In the event that any one of the two sides is put in a state of war by an armed invasion from an individual state or several states, the other side shall provide military and other assistance with all means in its possession without delay.”

In response to that Pyongyang announced early this week that it will be sending troops in the form of a military engineering unit to support Russian forces on the ground in the Donetsk region. The troops are expected to arrive on the battlefield as soon as next month.

The DPRK has already supplied almost two million rounds of artillery ammunition, rockets for Russian multiple launch rocket systems and, it is alleged, ballistic missiles to support Putin’s forces since the two leaders met in Russia in September. The active participation of North Korean combat troops raises the specter of escalation to the conflict, especially as commentators think it will not go well for Pyongyang’s sappers on the battlefield.

Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder said during a briefing on June 25 that North Korean troops were effectively being sent to their slaughter and questioned the wisdom of the deployment. He said, “I think that if I were North Korean military personnel management, I would be questioning my choices on sending my forces to be cannon fodder in an illegal war against Ukraine – we’ve seen the kinds of casualties that Russian forces [have been taking].”

More at the link.

This is incredibly dangerous for Kim. If his combat engineers do not perform well it is going to be a huge black eye for him and the DPRK military.

That’s enough for tonight.

— John Phipps: All Your Valor Are Belong to Me (@MagitekDad) June 24, 2024

GOP attacks on our country never end. The Heritage Foundation has a new pass-through division:

From his home office in small-town Kentucky, a seasoned political operative is quietly investigating scores of federal employees suspected of being hostile to the policies of Republican Donald Trump, a highly unusual and potentially chilling effort that dovetails with broader conservative preparations for a new White House.

Tom Jones and his American Accountability Foundation are digging into the backgrounds, social media posts and commentary of key high-ranking government employees, starting with the Department of Homeland Security. They’re relying in part on tips from his network of conservative contacts, including workers. In a move that alarms some, they’re preparing to publish the findings online.

With a $100,000 grant from the Heritage Foundation, the goal is to post 100 names of government workers to a website this summer to show a potential new administration who might be standing in the way of a second-term Trump agenda — and ripe for scrutiny, reclassifications, reassignments or firings.…

The concept of compiling and publicizing a list of government employees shows the lengths Trump’s allies are willing to go to ensure nothing or no one will block his plans in a potential second term. Jones’ Project Sovereignty 2025 comes as Heritage’s Project 2025 lays the groundwork, with policies, proposals and personnel ready for a possible new White House…

show full post on front page

Jacqueline Simon, policy director at the American Federation of Government Employees, said the language being used — the Heritage Foundation’s announcement praised the group for ferreting out “anti-American bad actors” — is “shocking.”

Civil servants are often ex-military personnel and are required to take an oath to the Constitution to work for the federal government, not a loyalty test to a president, she and others said.

“It just seems as though their goal is to try to menace federal employees and sow fear,” said Simon, whose union backs President Joe Biden, a Democrat, for reelection…

Heritage President Kevin Roberts said the “weaponization of the federal government” has been possible only because of the “deep state of entrenched Leftist bureaucrats.” He said he was proud to support the work of American Accountability Foundation workers “in their fight to hold our government accountable and drain it of bad actors.”

The federal government employs about 2.2 million people, including those in the Washington, D.C., area and workers who the unions say many Americans know as friends or neighbors in communities across the country.

About 4,000 positions in the government are considered political appointees who routinely change from one presidential administration to the next, but most are career professionals — from landscapers at Veterans Administration cemeteries to economists at the Bureau of Labor Statistics…

Jones, from his desk overlooking rickhouses storing barrels in the Bourbon Capitol of Bardstown, scoffed at comparisons to McCarthyism as “nonsense.”

He’s a former staffer to then-Sen. Jim DeMint, the South Carolina conservative Republican who later led Heritage and now helms the Conservative Policy Institute, where American Accountability Foundation has a mailing address. Jones also worked for Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, and provided opposition research for Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz’s 2016 presidential bid.

With six researchers, Jones’ team operates remotely across the country, poring over the information about federal workers within Homeland Security, the State Department and other agencies that deal with immigration and border issues.

Their focus is on the highest ranks of the civil servants — GS-13, GS-14 and GS-15 employees and those in senior executive positions who could put up roadblocks to Trump’s plans for tighter borders and more deportations…

He dismissed the risks that could be involved in publicly posting the names, salary information and other details of federal workers who have some level of privacy or the idea his group’s work could put employees’ livelihoods in jeopardy.

“You don’t get to make policy and then say, ‘Hey, don’t scrutinize me,”’ he said.

He acknowledges some of the work is often a “gut check” or “instinct” about which federal employees would be suspected of trying to block a conservative agenda.

“We’re looking at, ‘Are there wrong people on the bus right now that are, you know, openly hostile to efforts to secure the southern border?’” he said.

His own group came under scrutiny as it first probed Biden nominees.

Biden had repealed Trump’s Schedule F executive order in January 2021, but a Government Accountability Office report in 2022 found that agencies believed it could be reinstated by a future administration.

Since then, the Biden administration issued a rule that would make it harder to fire workers. A new administration could direct the Office of Personnel Management to undo the regulation, but the process would take time and be open to legal challenges.

Three Days, Filled with Pain and Sorrow

This post is in: Open Threads

Looks like the Supremes are going to make the slightest nod to letting women have the same rights as human beings by letting Idaho hospitals stabilize them if they’re bleeding out due to a pregnancy.  Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito are taking turns whipping the ass of the intern who accidentally posted that decision on the court’s website as we speak (it apparently wasn’t supposed to be released today).

The mercy shown by acknowledging that in the 21st century there are ways to save women’s lives even if they happen to have a non-viable embryo implanted in their uterus would make me want to pen numerous breathless encomiums to the new-found “moderation” of the court — if I were an idiot journalist living in DC.

Speaking of the rights that women don’t have, if you’re a member of the GOP, as these three are, you certainly don’t have the right to fight for even a modest restriction in abortion rights:

Three Days, Filled with Pain and Sorrow

These are three state legislators from South Carolina all lost to their primary challengers because they did the unthinkable:

They only rejected a newer version of the [South Carolina abortion] ban that didn’t allow minors a right to petition a judge for an abortion at up to 12 weeks, and Shealy tried and failed to amend the abortion ban from six weeks to 12 weeks. But this doesn’t change the fact that Shealy and Gustafson did vote for the ban at one point. Meanwhile, Senn previously said she supports an abortion ban after the first trimester, which is still an abortion ban.

Since they’re Republicans, they received a JFK Library “Profile in Courage” award.  If they were Democrats, they would be told to shut the fuck up.

Two more days of Supreme court rulings to come, and a debate to boot.  I hope my liver can handle it.

Where the Tree Frogs SingI enjoy painting and drawing more than doodling on the iPad, but with an app, you don’t have to wash brushes, scrub paint stains out of your clothes or fool around with paper and pencils. Here’s another:

If you want to follow along on SCOTUSblog.

I’ll copy the short summaries as each one shows up on their website.

I have these scheduled for Thursday and Friday mornings, as well.

Here we go!

In Murthy v. Missouri, a dispute over the government’s communications with social media companies during the 2020 election season and COVID-19 pandemic, the court holds that the challengers — two states and five social-media users — do not have a legal right to sue.   Opinion:  6-3  (good)

The court rules in Snyder v. United States, that federal bribery law does not make it a crime for state and local officials to accept gratuities that may be given as a token of appreciation after the official act. Federal law, the court writes, “leaves it to state and local governments to regulate gratuities to state and local officials.”

Opinion:    (official WG rating: that’s fucked up)

BREAKING: In a stunning announcement, Chief Executive Leadership Institute CEO Jeffrey Sonnenfeld says there will not be one Fortune 500 CEO supporting Donald Trump. This is wholly unprecedented. Retweet so all Americans see this shocking news. pic.twitter.com/X6w4OQFwqO

I'm a Supreme Court voter because of some simple math:

Trump already appointed 3 justices who helped overturn our reproductive freedoms.

If he wins again, he could appoint as many as 4 more.

We need justices who'll stand up for our rights—not their own right-wing agendas. pic.twitter.com/rLTgT1v9op

Most Americans plan to watch Biden-Trump debate, and many see high stakes, AP-NORC poll finds https://t.co/J7GFVRWglr

— The Associated Press (@AP) June 26, 2024

By extremely limited definitions of ‘watch’… Most people, I suspect, will tune in for the intro, and let their attention wander if there are no immediate fireworks. I’m planning on watching through liveblogs, and only switching to the actual debate if something useful happens, because there’s only so much my blood pressure medication can handle:

… About 6 in 10 U.S. adults say they are “extremely” or “very” likely to watch the debate live or in clips, or read about or listen to commentary about the performance of the candidates in the news or social media.

The poll suggests tens of millions of Americans are likely to see or hear about at least part of Thursday’s debate despite how unusually early it comes in the campaign season. Both Biden and Trump supporters view the debate as a major test for their candidate — or just a spectacle not to miss…

About half, 47%, of Americans say the debate is “extremely” or “very” important for the success of Biden’s campaign and about 4 in 10 say it’s highly important for Trump’s campaign. About 3 in 10 Americans say it is at least “very” important for both campaigns.

Most Democrats, 55%, think the upcoming debate is extremely or very important for the success of the Biden campaign. About half of Republicans, 51%, say the same thing about the importance of the debate for the Trump campaign. Only about one-third of independents say the debate, taking place at a CNN studio in Atlanta, is highly important for either campaign…

About 4 in 10 say they are likely to watch or listen to some or all of the debate live, while a similar share say they will watch or listen to clips later. Another 4 in 10, roughly, expect to consume commentary about the debate and candidate performance in the news or on social media. Republicans and Democrats are more likely than independents to be following debate coverage in some capacity…
