I’m not sure what products I viewed online to make the algorithm think I’m interested in human dog beds, but I’m seeing this ad a lot lately:

Giant dog bed with person in it

At first I scoffed and had cloud-shouty thoughts about what the world is coming to when people lie down in human-sized dog beds. What’s next, I wondered, lapping up beverages with our tongues and sticking our faces into dinnerware sets of metal bowls containing quinoa?

But you know, that human-sized dog bed looks pretty comfy, assuming that the pad underneath is thick enough. Not saying I’d ever buy one, but I will not judge those who do.

This should be interesting. Ā At least we don’t have to see their faces. Ā I was shocked that Josh would describe him like that. Ā I suspect that only a man could think of Boof without thinking “angry, entitled, liar and rapist” – not in that order!

*I should say that I generally like Josh Marshall. Ā This is the second time he had made a comment, on an issue related to women, that I thought was utterly clueless, and it has surprised me both times. Ā If it happens a third time, I will no longer be surprised.

Cold Grey Pre-Dawn Open Thread: Mitch McConnell, the Lyin’ in Winter

New: McConnell responds to Republicans blaming him for border debacle

ā€œI’ve had a small group of persistent critics the whole time I’ve been in this job. They had their shot … The reason we’ve been talking about the border is because they wanted to"https://t.co/VRG6ZtrAPe

— Burgess Everett (@burgessev) February 7, 2024

To highlight a powerful statement from Adam’s Ukraine update, last Sunday:

McConnell broke the Senate in order to accumulate the power to achieve a very specific set of political objectives: 1) to cut taxes for the wealthy, 2) to remove as many regulations on the wealthy and on businesses as possible, 3) to remove as many campaign finance regulations as possible to ensure it was legal for the wealthy to shovel obscene amounts of money at him and his caucus members making them wealthy beyond their dreams, and 4) to pack the courts with Federalist Society apparatchiks who would both do through the judicial process what he could not accomplish legislatively and, perhaps more importantly, ensure that none of this could ever be reversed by Democratic presidents working with Democratic majority Congresses.

What McConnell did not foresee that in doing so he was hollowing out the Republican Party and the conservative movement – including the white traditionalist Catholic and white evangelical churches – that sustain it. The result of McConnell’s labors is that instead of one Republican Party and one conservative movement, we now have dozens. The one the Kochs fund, the one the Mercers fund, the one the Uhliens fund, the one Art Pope funds in NC, the one the DeVos/Prince clan funds, etc, etc, etc. In some cases these ultra-high net worth individuals just buy their own Republican officials. Peter Thiel owns JD Vance. A multi-millionaire in Miami created the political career of Marco Rubio. And it was into this hollow shell of a party and a movement that Donald Trump, ever looking for his next set of marks and preternaturally capable of identifying them, recognized that he could just waddle right in and execute a hostile takeover for pennies on the dollar. And, in fact, get others to provide the pennies for him to do so.

Now that McConnell wants something else from his caucus, as well as their counterparts in the House for his ā€œlegacyā€… he’s not going to get it.

But never forget who the architect of the current moment is. Sure he had accomplices like Leonard Leo and Don McGahn and a host of others you’ve never heard of, but we are where we are because McConnell had four objectives and he was willing to and did break every rule, norm, and tradition to achieve them.

Could not happen to a more deserving elderly villain.

From the Politico story — “Behind the border mess: Open GOP rebellion against McConnell”:

… McConnell, now nearing his 82nd birthday, is determined to fund the Ukrainian war effort, a push his allies have depicted as legacy-defining. But now that his party is set on Wednesday to reject a bipartisan trade of tougher border policies for war funding, his far-right critics are speaking out more loudly: Several held a press conference Tuesday where they denounced his handling of the border talks, with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) calling on McConnell to step down.

show full post on front page

In an interview, McConnell rejected the criticism and said his antagonists fail to recognize the reality of divided government.

ā€œI’ve had a small group of persistent critics the whole time I’ve been in this job. They had their shot,ā€ McConnell said, referring to Sen. Rick Scott’s (R-Fla.) challenge to his leadership in 2022.

ā€œThe reason we’ve been talking about the border is because they wanted to, the persistent critics,ā€ he added. ā€œYou can’t pass a bill without dealing with a Democratic president and a Democratic Senate.ā€…

More and more of Senate Republicans’ internal strife is seeping out into public view, exposing years-old beefs that are still simmering. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) posted a fundraising link asking donors to ā€œkill this border billā€ in the middle of a closed-door GOP meeting on Monday and demanded ā€œnew leadership,ā€ while Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) memed McConnell as Charlie Brown whiffing on an attempt to kick a football held by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.).

ā€œI’ve been super unhappy since this started,ā€ Johnson said in an interview. ā€œLeader McConnell completely blew this.ā€…

McConnell’s loud critics are among those most responsible for raising opposition to the border deal, attacking its provisions while the text was being finalized. They raised such a ruckus that none of McConnell’s potential successors as leader — Sens. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), John Cornyn (R-Texas) and John Thune (R-S.D.) — offered to support it.

McConnell can’t be ejected spontaneously like a House speaker, meaning his job is safe until the end of the year. He also has major sway over the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC that may have to help Cruz, Scott and other Republicans win reelection…

The animosity McConnell now faces from Ron Johnson, Lee and others isn’t new either: They’ve questioned Senate GOP leadership’s decisions for years.

Ron Johnson’s been a thorn in McConnell’s side for years, particularly after many Republicans abandoned his reelection bid in 2016. Cruz has sparred with McConnell since getting to the Senate in 2013, Lee frequently breaks with leadership and a number of newer GOP senators voted for Scott over McConnell in 2022.

One GOP senator, granted anonymity to assess the situation candidly, said that the new wave of attacks could be happening because McConnell’s opponents sense weakness — or just out of ā€œpersonal piqueā€ over years-old disagreements…

ā€œThis wasn’t good for him. This wasn’t good for any of us,ā€ said Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) of McConnell, whom he backed in 2022. ā€œAnd I’m not gonna say he’s the total cause of it, but we got to have a better plan. This didn’t work out for us.ā€

It’s got to particularly sting for McConnell that his challengers are the dumbest / most venal / least crafty but loudest members of ‘his’ party. Right now, his legacy is being framed as destroying the Senate for the benefit of… Donald Trump. At least selling his office to the Federalist Society and its billionaire supporters could be disguised with a figleaf of serious conservatism; all Mitch has now is the ‘honor’ of leading a smash’n’grab mob.

Our task this year is not only to bolster Ukraine’s sky shield and long-range capabilities, but also to inflict systemic losses on Russia – address by the President of Ukraine

7 February 2024 – 21:31

Dear Ukrainians!

A brief summary for today.

In Kyiv, the debris from the morning’s Russian strike was still being cleared by the evening. An apartment building. Dozens of people were injured, four people were killed. My condolences to the families and friends. Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Lviv region, Dnipropetrovsk, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv and Kherson regions – there are casualties and destruction in these regions. We will retaliate against Russia for every missile, every “Shahed”. And our task this year is not only to bolster our sky shield and Ukraine’s long-range capabilities to the fullest extent possible, but also to inflict maximum systemic losses on Russia. In particular, this applies to frozen Russian assets, both of the terrorist state and of individuals associated with it. Everything must be confiscated and used for defense against terror. It is fair to retaliate against a terrorist. It is fair to destroy terrorists. And it is fair to make the terrorist state pay for its actions. And we are working with our partners as vigorously as possible to ensure a decision on Russian assets as soon as possible.

Today I met with the head of European diplomacy, Borrell. Specifically, we talked about the confiscation of Russian assets. We really need a unified and strong decision. A decision that proves our common respect for international law and absolute contempt for the terrorist state. Of course, I informed Mr. Borrell of the current battlefield situation and our needs. We discussed the European decision on a million artillery rounds for our warriors, and I am grateful for all the efforts to implement this decision and to give our guys on the front line more opportunities. Mr. Borrell promised that the agreements would be implemented. Today we also discussed key issues of Ukraine-EU security relations. We expect the creation of the Ukraine Assistance Fund within the European Peace Facility to be as effective as possible. I also met today with the President and members of the Bulgarian Parliament. We in Ukraine greatly appreciate Bulgaria’s support and integrity. And it is really important for every European nation to be in solidarity now, to be on the side of international law and the protection of human life. We discussed with the representatives of the Bulgarian Parliament the work on the Peace Formula, the situation in our Black Sea region, and our bilateral cooperation, particularly in the defense sector. Bulgaria, thank you!

There is something more to say – specifically about gratitude. Our warriors, our combat brigades. Today, we have reasons to commend the 47th separate mechanized brigade. This is the Avdiivka direction. Thank you, warriors, for your bravery. Maryinka direction – the 79th separate air assault brigade. Thank you! Bakhmut direction – the 93rd Kholodnyi Yar separate mechanized brigade – well done, warriors! Siversk direction – the 54th separate mechanized brigade named after Hetman Mazepa and the 81st separate airmobile brigade. Thank you all, warriors, for your strength! Of course, our artillerymen – the 40th separate artillery brigade. Thank you for your accuracy!

I am grateful to everyone who fights for our country, who defends the Ukrainian sky, who ensures security in the Black Sea for Ukraine. Thank you to everyone who helps us! And to everyone who works to ensure that Ukraine can withstand and achieve its own goals in the war.

We can win – we have to!

Glory to Ukraine!

This is the result of our inability to resupply Ukraine!

2/One of the reporters was like ā€œuh, wtf? I’ll be writing about news that happens & working sources for ideas of what to write. How TF can I predict the next six months of news?ā€

Can’t vouch for the credibility of those sources (or precision of my memory) but reading that…

3/…made me see the reporting in the NYT in a new light. If you look closely you can start to see the same themes over months, even when the fundamental premise is bullshit, & especially when the premise may have seemed plausible but subsequent events showed it to be wrong…

4/…yet the NYT keeps pumping out pieces based on the now discredited premise. (The failed Biden economy is a great example.) There are also the cases where it appears they’ve decided to pursue a subject & give it outsized attention, like back in the 90’s w the racist…

5…country clubs, or ā€œher emails,ā€ or of late the free speech on campus bullshit, their scaremongering about trans kids, or their Carrie Nation-ing of the danger of alcohol.

I can’t give a strong empirical basis for this, but the NYT isn’t the only paper I read regularly…

6/…& I don’t get this same sense of ā€œpursuing themesā€ in the Washington Post, Chicago Sun-Times, Detroit Free Press, or Detroit News.

Sticking w a story, out of proportion to what the rest of the press is covering, isn’t inherently bad; two of the greatest films…

7/…about journalism (All the President’s Men [from the book] & Spotlight) are stories of just such pursuits of stories missed or ignored or not emphasized by the rest of the press. But in those & similar cases they weren’t writing from a plan, they were follow tips, finding…

8/…clues, & following & assembling the story, rather than starting with the story & working backwards from the conclusion.

Again, I may have some of this wrong—I’d love to hear from former reporters/editors whether what I’m saying is consistent with their experiences…

9/…at the NYT; I’ll update this thread if I learn anything that confirms or casts doubt on the notion that the NYT plays off themes at the expense of sound reporting & analysis. But like I said, if you look for evidence of story arcs even if the premise is flawed or…

10/…just plain wrong, I suspect that like me you’ll find many examples at the NYT, and no comparable pattern at many or any other major newspapers.

I’ve said this before: Then-editor Howell Raines personally hated Bill Clinton with every fiber of his being; Raines wanted the ‘poor boy from Little Rock makes good’ narrative all to himself, and never stopped resenting that Bad-Boy Bill stole *his* spotlight. Institutional inertia and the anti-Democratic bias of its owners has kept that reputational mudslide going ever since…

11/I don’t remember as much from the 90’s & how much of that was editorial planning & how much was horrible & unrestrained reporters, but it was a disaster

There’s also Judith Miller https://t.co/yxdpCPiogN

Let’s Check In on Kristi’s Bed Shitting Ways

This post is in: Open Threads

Kristi Noem, Governor of the Sunshine State, girlfriend to Corey Lewandowski, and Trump sycophant vying for the VP spot, has been leaving some pretty big skid marks in the sheets recently.

First, the citizens of South Dakota had to pay $300k, and the South Dakota Health Secretary had to issue an apology, to the Transformation Project, a state contractor that was going to hire a community health worker for the transgender community.Ā  Kristi engineered dropping the Transformation Project as soon as the whole MAGA world decided that trans people were the designated object of hate.

Second, she’s admitted that her stunt sending the South Dakota National Guard to the Texas border was a $1.3 million “gift” to Texas.

Finally, she’s been banned from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation because she claimed that drug cartels are murdering people on the reservation, and specifically that a gang called the “Ghost Dancers” is responsible for some of the violence.Ā  There’s no evidence that they are, plus invoking the name of the Ghost Dancers is a major insult to the Ogalala Sioux Tribe because it’s a reference to a ceremony that was one of the pretexts for the Wounded Knee massacre on the Pine Ridge reservation.

On the bright side, she’s got a new book, the title of which is probably a reference to her political future in South Dakota after all the stunts she’s pulled.Ā  The new book comes out in May, and her last book was published in June, 2022, so she’s really working that angle, too.Ā  She’s pretty much an unthreatening lightweight, so I think she has a pretty good chance of being Trump’s VP pick.

Cup of CREAMED coffee

In the morning thread, I complained a lot about having to drink black coffee because I ran out of half-and-half and milk, and many agreed it was a tragic situation. I ransacked my well-stocked hurricane-country pantry in a fruitless search for canned milk, sweetened condensed milk or any plausible dairy-like product.

I even checked the freezer for ice cream. The only dairy I could find in the house was cheese, and that obviously wouldn’t do. So I choked down two cups of vile black coffee.

It delivered caffeine adequately, I guess. But I still didn’t feel right. So a while ago, I went downstairs to our enclosed game room (it’s a stilt house) to see if there was an RC cola in the downstairs fridge, aka, the beer fridge. There was. And there was also half a pint of heavy whipping cream!

Fuuuuck! I’d forgotten all about that!

I’d stashed it there more than a week ago when my sister and I returned from our aunt’s birthday party with a cooler containing several craft beers (our rural relations won’t touch the stuff), plus the leftover heavy whipping cream I’d brought along to make a pie topping at the party.

I flew back upstairs lickety split, brewed some coffee and am now enjoying a properly creamed (overly, even) hot beverage. And all is right with the world.
