Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Towering over Kentucky politics for decades, Sen. Mitch McConnell is regarded as the master strategist behind the GOP’s rise to power in a state long dominated by Democrats. Now, his blunt-force style of campaigning — which undercut so many foes — is being used against him.

Rooting for injuries… and suspecting this is a taste of what happens when DON Taco exits the Oval Office, willingly or feet-first:

… While bashing Kentucky’s longest-serving senator at a GOP dinner on the eve of Saturday’s Fancy Farm picnic, a tradition-laden stop on the state’s political circuit, [Nate] Morris was cut off in midsentence by a party activist in the crowd, who noted that McConnell isn’t seeking reelection and pointedly asked Morris: “What are you running on?”

Morris touted his hard line stance on immigration and defended Trump’s tariffs as a boon for American manufacturing. But he didn’t retreat from his harsh critique of McConnell…

The pushback from a county GOP chairman revealed the political risks of attacking the 83-year-old McConnell in the twilight of his career. Towering over Kentucky politics for decades, McConnell is regarded as the master strategist behind the GOP’s rise to power in a state long dominated by Democrats. The state Republican headquarters bears McConnell’s name. As the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, McConnell guided Republican policymaking and helped forge a conservative Supreme Court. Back home, his appropriating skills showered Kentucky with federal funding.

Now, his blunt-force style of campaigning — which undercut so many foes — is being used against him.

Morris is running against two other prominent Republicans — U.S. Rep. Andy Barr and former state Attorney General Daniel Cameron — for McConnell’s seat. The outcome will be decided in the spring primary next year. Kentucky hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since Wendell Ford in 1992.

All three Republican hopefuls lavish praise on Trump — in hopes of landing his endorsement — but also have ties to McConnell, who mentored generations of aspirational Republicans. Cameron and Barr have chided McConnell at times, but it’s been mild compared to Morris’ attacks. Morris interned for McConnell but glosses over that connection…

***********
And that reminded me… I’ve been meaning to share this masterful piece of long-form journalism from the Washington Post — “A town tried to heal racial divides. It energized Confederate supporters instead” [gift link]:

show full post on front page

EDENTON, N.C. — Confederate supporters arrived first, establishing a Saturday morning base near the town waterfront with “Save our history” signs and Civil War information sheets. Some sported red MAGA hats and shirts that proclaimed “America First,” or, in one case, “If you don’t like Trump then you probably won’t like me and I’m OK with that.”

The opposition showed up about two hours later carrying stark white signs with black letters: “Remove this statue.”

For the next two hours, as they’ve done nearly every Saturday for the past three years, the groups mingled with confused tourists in a seemingly unending fight over a Confederate monument at the heart of this historic town, which is nearly 60 percent Black.

What started as an effort to promote racial unity in Edenton by reconsidering its most prominent downtown symbol has done the opposite. A chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, long extinct locally, sprang to life. The forgotten Confederate Memorial Day was resurrected and commemorated again last month with a wreath-laying and roll call of the rebel dead.

And the town council, which had formed a Human Relations Commission in 2020 to consider steps for racial reconciliation, last fall came up with a novel way to handle the statue of a generic Confederate soldier:

Take it down from the waterfront. Add it to the courthouse.

Facing north, the green-patina figure of the soldier — one of many that were once found throughout the South — stands atop a stone column on a grassy traffic median where the town market once stood. Enslaved people were bought, sold or offered for hire on that spot…

I not only think we should tear down Confederate monuments, but we should replace them monuments to the Union Army with the explicit mention of how virtuous it was to wage war against traitors and slavers.
I will melt down your Stonewall Jackson statue and fashion him into Philip Sheridan.

Zelensky visited the positions of the Defense Forces in the Sumy region.

In particular, he visited the command post of the 225th Separate Assault Regiment — the unit whose soldiers were the first to enter the territory of the Kursk region a year ago.

Russia Now Seems to Be More Inclined Toward a Ceasefire – the Pressure Is Working – Address by the President

6 August 2025 – 21:15

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

I spent the whole day today in the Sumy region – with our brigades, with the heroic men and women who are actively defending our land and who carried out our offensive operation in the Kursk region. Today marks the anniversary of the Kursk operation – a truly Ukrainian historic operation. We brought the war onto the territory of the aggressor state and are still operating on its territory. At a time when many spoke that the situation had reached a stalemate, and were losing faith in Ukraine, we proved that Ukrainians know how to act right. And we proved that many of Russia’s threats were just bluffs. Today, I want to thank all our warriors – every soldier, sergeant, and officer – all the men and women who took part in the Kursk operation. Thirteen hundred kilometers of Russian territory were under our control. And this forced the Russians not only to pull their forces away from the Donetsk region, but also to ask North Korea for help. We thwarted Russia’s plan to expand its offensive against Sumy and Kharkiv. Our men captured more than a thousand Russian POWs in the Kursk region – including some whose capture helped unblock, among other things, complex prisoner exchanges. It was one of the most important chapters of this war. I personally thanked our warriors today – the 225th Assault Regiment, the 80th Halytska Brigade, and our glorious 95th Brigade. I’m proud of you, warriors! Of course, I also thanked Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi – this is his operation. We discussed our current actions in the east of Ukraine, in the border areas, and on Russian territory. We talked about what our troops need. We will get it all done: pickup trucks, other vehicles – ATVs. We’ll also resolve the funding issues for the brigades, many specific issues – explosives, certain types of drones. Clear instructions have been given to the Ministry of Defense. We will get everything done.

Today, here in the Sumy region, there was a report from Minister of Defense Denys Shmyhal on recent updates within the Ministry. First – maximum orders for Ukrainian manufacturers so that 50 percent of the weapons on the front lines are ours, Ukrainian. Second – development of digital services and all systems, including Delta. Third – reducing bureaucracy. Fourth – clear, very clear communication with our brigades and units regarding their needs. Fifth – the full range of personnel-related issues. We all understand the challenges here, and the Ministry must resolve them together with the military.

And one more thing.

Right on my way from our brigades here in the Sumy region, I spoke with President Trump. This conversation happened after President Trump’s representative, Steve Witkoff, visited Moscow. Our joint position with our partners is absolutely clear and transparent – the war must end. And it must be done honestly. It is very important to do it honestly. European leaders were on the call, and I am grateful to each of them for their support. We discussed what was spelled out in Moscow. Russia now seems to be more inclined toward a ceasefire – the pressure is working. But the key is to ensure they don’t deceive anyone in the details – neither us, nor the United States. We have proposed that in the near future, our representatives – from Ukraine and our partners, our national security advisors – hold talks to determine our position, our common position, and our shared vision. This is very important for us, for Ukraine. Ukraine will definitely defend its independence. We all need a lasting and reliable peace. Russia must end the war that it itself started. Thank you to everyone who stands with us, with our nation, with our people, with Ukraine, with our state.

Glory to Ukraine!

First Lady Zelenska visited Kobe Gakuin University, which has opened the first center dedicated to research on Ukraine in the Indo-Pacific region: the Matsuguchi Tadashi Anniversary Ukraine Research Center.

Japanese University Joins Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies

6 August 2025 – 18:43

During their visit to Japan, First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha, and Advisor – Commissioner of the President of Ukraine on the Fund of the President of Ukraine for the Support of Education, Science, and Sports Olha Budnyk met with Professor Nobuhiko Bishu, President of Kobe Gakuin University.

The First Lady thanked the Japanese university for opening the Matsuguchi Tadashi Anniversary Ukraine Research Center last November – the first research center dedicated to Ukraine in the Indo-Pacific region.

“Today, together with the university’s president, we have taken another step toward advancing Ukrainian studies in the region – this institution is the first in Japan to join the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies,” Olena Zelenska said.

The Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies is a state-led initiative of Ukraine, created to unite academic centers of Ukrainian studies around the world, promote interest in studying Ukraine, provide sources for exploring the truth about our country, and foster the exchange of expertise and academic knowledge.

“For centuries, Russia has invested significant resources into promoting its own version of history. Ukraine was often studied within the Russian context, using sources, materials, and ideas shaped by the Russian historical narrative. As a result, prominent Ukrainian figures, artists, and cultural achievements were frequently presented as part of Russian history and culture. Now we must defend our heritage and accomplishments,” the First Lady emphasized.

She noted that thanks to joint efforts, 14 universities from Finland, South Africa, the Czech Republic, Austria, Canada, Estonia, the Republic of Korea, and Italy have joined the Coalition over the past year. In total, more than 70 universities worldwide have expressed interest in becoming part of the initiative.

“I am grateful to Kobe Gakuin University and its scholars, who truly value not only knowledge but also human dignity and freedom of thought. The truth empowers all who are open to it,” Olena Zelenska concluded.

— Mira of Kyiv 🇺🇦 (@reshetz.bsky.social) August 6, 2025 at 2:55 PM

Back to Ukraine.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated that Russians are adding approximately 9,000 troops per month:

1/ By comparing that figure to Russia’s recruitment numbers and assessing the surplus, one can roughly estimate their monthly casualty rate

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) August 5, 2025 at 10:25 PM

2/ Their recruitment, at least until January 2025, was about 30,000 per month. If you subtract 9 from 30, you get 21,000. With a 1:1.5 KIA-to-WIA, that would give you 8,400 KIA and 12,600 WIA per month. Multiply 8,400 by 7, and you get nearly 60,000 KIA between January and July.

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) August 5, 2025 at 10:25 PM

3/ This is not a precise or fully reliable method of calculation, but it does offer a rough estimate of net attrition. The validity of such an estimate depends on the assumption that both Russian and Ukrainian figures in statements are accurate, or reasonably close to real ones

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) August 5, 2025 at 10:25 PM

That wasn’t the end. Another big win of the “cardboard protests” waves: the gov’t has appointed the winner of the competition Oleksandr Tsyvinsky as the head of Ukraine’s Bureau of Economic Security. This agency is instrumental for improving business climate & fighting against economic scams. Great!

This is just the tip of the iceberg, from the last day or so. One would wish for less collateral damage, but there are problems where ‘throw money at it’ just isn’t a sufficient solution.

NEW: According to an internal email, ICE floated the idea of offering cash bounties for expedited deportations. The idea was withdrawn four hours later after ICE was asked for comment. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/08/05/u…

SCOOP: The Prospect has discovered that FEMA probationary employees who had been on paid leave were told to report to ICE within seven days or lose their jobs. It could signal problems with ICE recruitment. From @ddayen.bsky.social:

In other words, crazy Kristi Noem has made ICE so toxic to Americans, it is having trouble hiring able-bodied people. Good.

Trump-supporting police chiefs are pissed that DHS is recruiting with huge signing bonuses and loan forgiveness as bait, because they’re about to lose their best and brightest to ICE.
Basically, ICE is defunding the police.

ICE is arresting thousands of people in random locations—what it calls “non-specific” or “general” areas—who had no prior contact with law enforcement: the telltale sign of illegal profiling www.cato.org/blog/1/5-ice…

Per the notably-not-leftist Cato Institute:

Some racial profiling was happening from the start, but the operation was supercharged in mid-May when the White House ordered ICE to stop using warrants, targeted operations, and just "go out on the streets" and arrest people. These arrests shot from 500/week to 1,500/week

… Jason Houser, who was chief of staff at ICE in the Biden administration and a Homeland Security counterterrorism official, tells me it normally takes twelve to eighteen months to recruit someone, vet them, and do background checks. To demonstrate the difficulty of finding qualified applicants, he pointed to another part of DHS, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which has been trying to hire 15,000 people for the last fifteen years. CBP, he said, has traditionally been more stringent about handing out security clearances than other agencies, which further slows the process of hiring border patrol agents.

Each background check, Houser said, can take between six and nine months. The purpose of looking into each recruit’s history is to filter out those who have a criminal record, have problems with drug use, or hold extremist views. In a rush to fill the ranks, those background checks, including a dive into what they’ve posted on social media, could be rushed or skipped altogether.

Scott Shuchart, a former assistant director of ICE under Biden, told Slate that he worried that many new ICE recruits would be “Proud Boys and other insurrectionists.”

“This administration is led by criminals,” he said, “and they’re going to keep doing unlawful and terrible things.”…

HOUSER PAINTED AN EVEN DARKER picture for me: He told me that instead of hiring 10,000 ICE new agents as official government employees, the administration could, if it wanted, instead hire them as contractors. It has that kind of flexibility under the new law—and he predicted that they’ll use it, akin to how the military sometimes leans on contractors in global hotspots…

ICE raided the Westlake Home Depot in Los Angeles this morning. LATU organizers snapped some photos from the raid—one sticks out: ICE agents rolling up in a Penske rental truck.
Wonder where they got the idea😬
Trying to avoid detection? Is this policy now? Are they now doing roving gangs in this?

Spent some time trying to figure out a basic timeline as to when Medicaid would be impacted by Trump’s Big Murderous Bill
Thought I had it figured out (will post below).
Based on hearing personal experiences, getting information from my family’s physicians and care providers in the medical field

I assume there are other people on social media tracking various threads of the Republican National Tsunami. Anybody got any links or suggestions I can share?

in the past week
and seeing individuals sharing their stories on SM — specifically cuts to care homes for Seniors — some of these changes to healthcare are happening now??
If you have a loved one in a care facility — prepare for changes and stay informed.

Deal or No Deal?

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Open Threads, Politics

TPM reporter Emine Yücel posted an article yesterday about what might happen when Congress returns from recess and lawmakers have to come up with an appropriations bill. It’ll be a pressing issue because the fiscal year ends on September 30. Senate Dems will have to decide if they’ll give the Repubs enough votes to pass a bill under the current rules, which require 60.

This will trigger the usual drama about a government shutdown. Dems don’t want a shutdown because, in no particular order, 1) they don’t want to get blamed for a shutdown, 2) they believe having a functional federal government is good, actually, and 3) a shutdown would give Trump more discretion to fund only the parts of the government he personally wants to work.

But what if Senate Dems announce at the outset that they won’t negotiate since Repubs don’t honor bipartisan agreements anymore? What if they refuse to participate in this charade since duly appropriated funds are illegally impounded and clawed back by recissions packages (that pass with 50 votes) anyway? What if Democrats tell Republicans to eliminate the filibuster and pass their own shitty bill with 50 votes?

And if Repubs don’t change the rule and instead start screeching about Dems causing a shutdown, what if Dems reiterate nonstop that Repubs are in charge and can change the filibuster rule to avert a shutdown all by themselves? Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see why this isn’t possible — and a better option than providing Dem votes (and bipartisan cover) for a shitty Repub bill.

Under normal circumstances, it’s probably better for the parties to reach bipartisan agreements that force opponents to compromise, but we don’t live in that world anymore. We’re already living in quasi-shutdown conditions anyway since Repubs are a nihilistic cult that ceded the appropriations process to Trump. So why not make it official and let them own the whole goddamn mess?
