Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Books are my comfort food!

We will not go back.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Republicans do not trust women.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

In my day, never was longer.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Consistently wrong since 2002

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Election Worker Appreciation Thread

by Rose Judson|  November 5, 20241:03 pm| 42 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Harris-Walz

Somewhere in rural northeastern Pennsylvania, there’s a polling place staffed almost entirely by my family. Dad (judge of elections), Mom (certified poll-watcher) and Aunt A. (poll worker) report steady, longer-than-average lines from the very start of the day—including a good number of people waiting outside when Dad rolled up to open the polling place. On their lunch break, Mom and Dad also said there were lots of new and inactive voters.

I’ve lived abroad most of my adult life, so I’ve never worked an election. But I really, really appreciate everyone who does. GOTV folks are crucial, as are ballot-curers and other volunteers, but the local folks who give a whole day to help others cast their ballots are really special. Even the ones who aren’t related to me. If you’re out there doing this work today, thank you.

Open thread for your reports from the field or whatever else you’ve got.

If at first you don’t succeed, try try again

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads

I heard this a thousand times growing up.  One of my mom’s frequent refrains.

If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.

But my mom also used to say that if you have to cheat to win, it’s not winning.

Unfortunately the orange anti-christ learned the first one, but not the second.

So the folks at Popular Information have teamed up with the More Perfect Union folks to create an election night guide for our 7 swing states – so we can be prepared for how the vote totals will fluctuate as the night progresses.

But let’s build on this.

Maybe we can think of this as hurricane prep.  (Or tornado, earthquake, flood, depending on where you live.)

I bet that at least a few BJ peeps will remember what day each of these states was called – or the time it was called if it was called overnight on election night.  Share your recollections below and I’ll add notes to the states.

Hell, I’ll even add notes to the states if you know useful information that was’t covered.  Then, if it seems like we have a great collection of information I’ll post it again tonight, or put it in the sidebar.

Forewarned is Forearmed

If you encounter violence, threats, or intimidation at a polling place, call 911 immediately. After alerting local authorities, report the incident to the Justice Department.

On The Road – BeautifulPlumage – Troll Hunting in the PNW

BeautifulPlumage

In the summer of 2023, Danish artist Thomas Dambo installed six of his recycled-material trolls in the Pacific NW: five around the Puget Sound and one in Portland, OR. He has installed 120 of these all over the world in the past 10 years. More about NW Trolls: Way of the Bird King at this link https://www.nwtrolls.org/

A good friend’s daughter and her husband planned a troll hunting trip on the last day of summer this year. The weather was sunny and perfect for our day-long adventure. Apologies for the crappy cell phone pictures.

We met up around 8:30 am at the Issaquah Community Center for the short walk on a paved trail to find our first Troll, Jakob Two Tree. We were able to walk around and under this troll. Note the woven bracelet visible on the right wrist.

Friendly reminder that from now until Wednesday, we are living in the metaphorical equivalent of an airport lounge. Calories don't count. Money doesn't matter. No one will judge you for having a beer at 10am.

Riot fencing is being installed in DC ahead of the election. This isn’t normal and the press needs to be clear why. Trump incited a violent insurrection and continues to present an ongoing threat to our democracy. The security measures are entirely due to the danger he presents. https://t.co/8kebeyx5uf

Monday Night Open Thread

This post is in: John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

Welp, here we are. Tomorrow is the big day, and I have been informed that since the election has officially underway in a few hours in Maine or NH or one of those fucking places, we are now operating under airport rules. Nothing is off limits. Want a cocktail at nine am? Go for it. 1600 calorie Cinnabon at 11pm tonight. Knock yourself out, kid. No one is going to judge.

My dinner was a 10mg edible and I dipped a half a bar of baker’s chocolate into a jar of peanut butter. I have no real appetite. I’ve tried watching tv but can’t focus so I’m just gonna play video games all night and troll twitter.

I’m now just thinking about the potential we could have with a blowout. How many good things we could do. How we could potentially lose Ted Cruz and Rick Scott forever. It’s kinda like the political equivalent of me thinking about how I am going to spend the winnings from my Powerball jackpot I am going to win with my two dollar ticket. But it’s getting me through this.

I know they say this is the most important election ever, and it is. More so than 2020. More so than 2016. Trump is worse even than he was in those, and surrounded by truly awful people.

This is great:

Monday Night Open Thread 15

Part of the reason my dinner was baker’s chocolate and peanut butter is I packed up my pantry and am taking all my dried goods, canned goods, expirable spices, and frozen goods to the soup kitchen and so there’s not much left but a bunch of tins of kippered snacks and sardines which I am not even going to bother trying to give to the soup kitchen. Damn near every person that comes to my house and sees those items makes a snide remark so I am not going to try to foist them on homeless people who already have it rough enough.

Speaking of packing up, I am in trouble with my mom and dad because apparently I forgot to tell them I am leaving on Thursday. I’ve told everyone. You all know, everyone at work knows, my siblings know, my neighbors know, the lady at the post office knows, Harry at the general store knows, but apparently I neglected to tell them. Oops.

So mom was a little agitated when she found out from my neighbor down the street. The good news is I have spent 54 years prepping her for this kind of disappointment, so she’ll get over it quickly.

That’s it for me. You do what you gotta do to keep sane. I think we got this. I hope.

War for Ukraine Day 985: We Now Know Exactly What Putin’s Terms Were in 2022

by Adam L Silverman|  November 4, 20248:21 pm| 25 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is still doing great. Thank you for all the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, there’s a lot going on and I know everyone is on edge regarding tomorrow’s election. I’m going to try to keep this as brief as possible tonight. And I will be very happy if tomorrow night or, Wednesday night, I have to write that I am very, very, very glad that my assessment of what was likely to happen did not.

Before we start I want to note an unfortunate anniversary. Today is the 29th anniversary of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. I’d only been back from Scotland for about two months and I remember walking into the house and my dad sitting on the arm of the soda just sobbing. I asked what happened, what’s wrong and he just kept gesturing at the TV with his right hand as CNN was running its breaking news coverage.

Rabin was not perfect and there was no guarantee that his vision for Israel and the Palestinians would have worked had he not been assassinated. But it would definitely be better than what we have now with the man responsible for inspiring the assassination continuing to serve as Israel’s Prime Minister while one of the young extremists who had been trying to assassinate Rabin serves as the Israeli Minister of National Security and has subverted Israel’s police.

That’s a very young Itamar Ben-Gvir in the lower left holding the hood ornament of Rabin’s official vehicle. He, along with a number of his violent extremist buddies, had broken through the security cordon around Rabin’s vehicle in the days leading up to the assassination and since he couldn’t get his hands on Rabin, he broke the hood ornament off as a trophy and then boasted to the news media that they got to the car, they would get to Rabin. In the bottom right is one of the incendiary images that were everywhere at Bibi’s campaign rallies. The other ones were Rabin’s face superimposed on Arafat’s head. Bibi’s incitement and Ben-Gvir’s extremism won that day and have been winning every day since.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.
