Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Come on, man.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

A couple of quick housekeeping notes: First, Rosie is still doing fine. Tomorrow will be here fourth and final treatment of round two.

Second, I’m going to try to keep tonight’s update short(ish). I’ve got some stuff to do and a very long day tomorrow.

As I start writing tonight’s update at 6:50 PM EDT the only air raid alerts up over Ukraine are for Kharkiv and Donetsk Oblasts.

Russia is bombing Kharkiv with gliding bombs right now. Why isn’t Ukraine allowed to use longer-range missiles to target the airfields where these planes take off? Isn’t it obvious that Russia is exploiting this? pic.twitter.com/2rlsobFqYh

I was on a video call with my parents when the russians launched a bombardment on Kharkiv. I saw the fear on their faces after the first explosion, and then the power went out in their house after the second. https://t.co/95On4zurT0

The More We Can Do, the Sooner We Will Succeed in Forcing Russia into a Just Peace – the Address by the President

23 June 2024 – 20:35

Dear Ukrainians!
At the moment, the electricity supply has already been restored in Kharkiv. Today, after the Russian bombs hit, a part of Kharkiv was left without electricity, the subway and electric transport were stopped. I thank all our repair crews, everyone involved in restoring the energy supply, and local and regional authorities. I want to thank them for their quick response and for helping people. Unfortunately, 12 people were wounded, unfortunately, one person was killed today. My condolences to their families, my condolences to all the close ones. Every day Kharkiv suffers from this Russian terror. And every day we repeat: Russian combat aircraft that carry out these strikes, not only on Kharkiv, but on our other cities, on our communities, on our frontline positions – Russian combat aircraft must be destroyed wherever they are, by all effective means available. It is also quite fair to attack the Russian airfields. And we need this joint decision with our partners – a security decision.

The recent authorization of strikes on Russian territory – near the border – has helped to destroy part of Russia’s terrorist capacity. But only a part. We need to fully protect people and lives from Russian terror – we need more long-range capabilities; we need proper weapons for Ukrainians. And we are working on this with our partners – we are doing everything to bring the decision closer. In general, the next weeks of June and the first half of July should be no less productive for Ukraine than May and the first half of June. We have already received a decision on new Patriots for Ukraine, and we are preparing a follow-up, working on the supply of more air defense systems. And long-range capability is now a question not only of what we can achieve on the battlefield, but also of when the war will end. The more we can do, the sooner we will succeed in forcing Russia into a just peace.

An important outcome of the week is the addition of six more participants to the Peace Summit Communiqué. This is a clear message that we have succeeded in convincing the world that peace is possible – and a just peace. There will be even more signatures on the Communiqué – our team is working on it now. And we are also gradually preparing to work in groups – on the points of the Peace Formula. Our task has not changed – it is to find a common, global way to restore security on each of the points of the Peace Formula in the coming months. And it is possible. I thank everyone who is helping!

We are also preparing for a new result in our relations with the European Union. The EU has already approved the negotiating framework for Ukraine, and we expect the actual start of negotiations on June 25 – the Ukrainian Government delegation will be in Brussels for that. It is a truly historic week. Ukraine has been moving towards this for a decade, and this result is the personal result of everyone who chose Ukraine on February 24, who fights for our country, who strengthens Ukraine with everything necessary.

And one more thing.

Today I would like to congratulate our warriors from the Center of Special Operations “A” of the SSU – today is their day, the Center is 30 years old. These are really heroic guys, without whom it is impossible to operate in any hot direction. I am proud of you! I have signed several decrees on conferring ranks and presenting state awards to the warriors of the SSU’s CSO “A”. And this is the very least the state can do to thank you. Once again, I congratulate you on your day. Today is also Public Service Day in Ukraine. I congratulate all those who really work for the state, for the people, and who really give one hundred percent for the sake of Ukraine – for our country to withstand this war and prevail. We absolutely must defeat the Russian evil.

Glory to all who stand with Ukraine!

Glory to Ukraine!

this is the end of the russian army
they have no leadership,

and no future..

this is not an army, this is evil!!!!!
it HAS to be stopped and gutted..
it has to be burned down and ripped out of the ground..
and when survivors go home they will do the same to the civilians that they did to there friends..

the rage of the returning troops will wreck russia. not any weapons from the west.

this is evil, and supporters of russia are evil by supporting this.

You do not need to go and watch the actual video. I’ve seen it and the screen grab in the embedded tweet is more than enough.

In Makhachkala, unidentified people who attacked a synagogue left writings on the door, one of them is “2:120”.

This is a pointer to the second Surah of the Qur’an: “Never will the Jews be pleased with thee. nor yet the Christians, unless thou follow their own creeds. Say, “God’s guidance is the true guidance”. If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allāh no protector or helper”.

In Makhachkala, locals are hiding inside. Combat in the streets.

Russian law enforcers have blocked shooters who are hiding in a restaurant building in Derbent.

— Anton Gerashchenko (@Gerashchenko_en) June 23, 2024

According to one of the versions, the shooters in Russian Derbent and Makhachkala might be related to international terrorist organizations, Russian RBK media reports, citing a source in the law enforcement agencies of Dagestan.

Judging by the actions of the shooters, their shouts and appearance, the terrorists might belong to an Islamist terrorist organization, the source said.

According to the law enforcers, today’s actions were planned in advance – on a major Orthodox holiday. At the same time, several attackers were listed in the Russian Interior Ministry’s databases as having connections in Wahhabi circles. All of them are residents of Dagestan.

As is often the case with these things in Russia, it is hard to figure out what actually happened, what’s real, what’s manufactured. We’ll have to wait for more information to come out, but I’m not sure that it will provide any more clarity. I am sure that Putin, his surrogates, and his supporters will find a way to blame this on Ukraine. And since this was an attack on a synagogue, Bibi and his crowd of weigh in too. And the “connection to Wahhabism” is a nice touch because that’ll be used to further attack the US given the attempt to negotiate a security agreement with Saudi.

That’s enough for tonight.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham was on Face the Nation this morning, mainly to talk about fires and immigration, but even the host of Face the Republicans let her get in a few home truths:

MARGARET BRENNAN: You have been a very vocal access- advocate, I should say, for Reproductive Health Access. This week marks two years since Roe vs. Wade was struck down. And yet, in 2023, America had the highest abortion number and abortion rate in over a decade. Why do you think there are more abortions happening at a time when there is decreased access?

GOV. LUJAN GRISHAM: Well, I think there are more abortions happening because more women are at risk, which means they can’t get into a provider, they can’t get prenatal care. You’ve got providers who are worried about prosecutions and any number of other issues that interfere with their ability to provide care, less access to contraceptives, less information about public health, less ability to get to your primary care physician. Most families and women live eighty-six miles from a provider- you create a draconian situation; you’re going to increase risk at every single place. And this is a state that’s clear about protecting women and creating equality, but that’s what I believe is the genesis of this situation.

In addition to what Gov. Lujan Grisham said, I’m guessing one reason is that outlawing abortion makes women who are pregnant “call the question” earlier — since mifepristone by mail is the only alternative to a long car ride that they can’t afford.  But that’s just a guess.

Anyway, do I think the fact of rising abortion rates post-Dobbs is going to make forced birthers rethink their positions?  Of course not:  first, they never rethink anything.  Second, along with the rate of abortion, the rate of women’s suffering has gone up, and that’s what they really wanted.  Third, this will just push them to ask for more:  outlawing contraception is next, and boy are they foaming at the mouth to get that done.  Look for Thomas and Alito to break new ground in originalism by pointing out that the founding fathers didn’t have the pill or IUDs, therefore Griswold should be reversed.

If ever you have the time to watch a 12-minute video, it’s probably on a Sunday. There’s a temptation to dismiss Project 2025, and the Heritage Foundation authoritarians who hatched it, as just another airy right-wing phantasy for TFG to spin to the rubes. But if you watch the clip below, it’s clear this is a very dangerous, and frankly un-American, plan with terrible ramifications for everyone:

At first I was dubious of @MSNBC for inviting a Heritage Foundation person on to spout lies.

Then I saw this interview and recognized that the best way to highlight the insanity that’s afoot is to put examples of it on television for all to see.

Here’s a 90-second clip from the interview above, if you want something briefer to share on social media. “Institutionalize Trumpism!”... even Michael Steele, who’s made a nice chunk of change from the Heritage Foundation, repudiates this nutbird’s ranting as “a dramatic shift away” from the ‘sensible’ principles HF has espoused since Ronald Reagan made them nationally powerful.

To my conservative friends in the Republican Party:

This is the President of the Heritage Foundation.

He made it clear this morning that a priority of a second Trump term is to essentially eliminate the Republican Party — and instead transform the entire GOP into MAGA.

Elex Michaelson goes one-on-one with attorney, entrepreneur and philanthropist Nicole Shanahan, for her first TV sit-down since being named Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s running mate. https://t.co/bJGFaIL7ir

— FOX 11 Los Angeles (@FOXLA) June 21, 2024

Per Fox LA, “First TV sit-down with Independent VP candidate Nicole Shanahan”:

show full post on front page

… The two sit down at Shanahan’s Malibu home for a wide-ranging discussion, talking the state of the Presidential race, addressing hot-button issues like vaccines, abortion, IVF, and the war in the Middle East, and getting personal, as Shanahan opens up about her career, her difficult childhood, being a mom, and the behind-the-scenes events that led her to join Kennedy’s Independent ticket.

THE ISSUE IS: SHANAHAN ON VACCINES AND VACCINE MANDATES
“I don’t think mandates should exist for any healthcare decisions related to children… Historically, I have always, complied with the CDC recommendations… what I have noticed is that there has been less and less informed consent over time, and there has been, since the 1986 Vaccine Act, a lack of liability for when a vaccine is either not effective or causes more injury than we would accept…”

THE ISSUE IS: SHOULD ABORTION ACCESS BE DETERMINED BY INDIVIDUAL STATES?

“Personally, I was saddened [by the Dobbs decision]. I think that anytime you take something as historic, as Roe v Wade, and the headline is, it’s been reversed, it startles you. However, that being said, when you look at it, it was an issue of constitutional law…”

“It’s what we have right now. And I can see a benefit, we have to look at it in the positive, because it’s what we have, and we have to make the best with what we have. The Supreme Court is our highest court. We have to respect its decision. It is what we have. And whether or not I’m happy with that or not is irrelevant…”
THE ISSUE IS: WHY NICOLE SHANAHAN WANTS TO BE THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
“I want to be Vice President, because I want to take my learnings of being a mother in today’s America, being somebody who has really looked at our health care issues, who understands deeply our AI challenges and the technology landscape of this country, and I want to bring it to the White House. I think that there’s a great need right now to bring a youthful, capable, mindset and framing to the biggest issues that are challenging this country today. And, of course, I’m a very, very enthusiastic, Bobby Kennedy supporter, I want to see him in the White House, and I was already working behind the scenes before I joined the ticket…”

So… Goop, but for politics? That’s probably unfair to Gywneth Paltrow and her vagina-scented candles.

Calling the overturn of Roe a benefit while women are forced to miscarry in hospital lobby restrooms is certainly a choice. This is campaign is against your right to abortion care. Period. https://t.co/l1mkqizFv5

This Russian terror with guided aerial bombs must and can be stopped. Bold decisions from our partners are needed so that we can destroy Russian terrorists and Russian combat aircraft where they are.

We have already proved that it is possible to protect people’s lives from missile terror, particularly by clearing the border areas of terrorist launchers. Protection against bombs is required as well. We need this determination.

I thank everyone who helps Ukraine protect lives!

Dear Ukrainians!

Currently, in Kharkiv, the clearing of rubble at the site of the Russian bomb attack is still ongoing. Four guided aerial bombs hit the city—this is calculated terror. One of the bombs destroyed a residential building in the central part of the city, near the bus station. As of now, more than 40 people in the city were reported injured. All are receiving necessary assistance. Three people in Kharkiv were killed by today’s strikes. My condolences to their families and loved ones. The rescue operation is complicated due to the collapse of the building’s structures. However, the rescuers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, local services, and everyone involved are doing everything possible to help people. Similarly, we are working to the maximum to give Ukraine the capability to fully respond to such Russian terror. Since the beginning of this June alone, Russians have used more than 2,400 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine already, about 700 of which were targeted at the Kharkiv region – against our positions, our cities, and communities in the Kharkiv region.

Such Russian strikes are also being carried out in the Donetsk region and other frontline and border regions – on a daily basis. Ukraine needs the necessary forces and means to destroy the carriers of these bombs, particularly Russian combat aviation wherever it is. This step is needed. I am grateful to all partners, grateful to America for a strong decision that helped us stabilize the situation in the Kharkiv border region – we gained the ability to destroy Russian missile launchers near the border and concentrations of Russian occupiers. Such decisions need to be continued. The significant reduction in Russian missile terror against Kharkiv and the region proves that it is entirely possible to protect our cities and communities from Russian bombs. That is why modern air defense systems for Ukraine – Patriots – and the acceleration of training of our pilots for F-16s, and, most importantly, the sufficient range of our weapons are truly necessary. Necessary for the protection of lives – and solely for this purpose. I thank everyone in the world who supports us in this. Russian terror must be defeated, and this is in the interest of everyone who wants to live in a world without war, which terrorists always spread whenever they are not defeated. Today, I heard reports from Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi and Ukraine’s Defense Minister Umerov regarding the provision for our forces and supplies from partners. The Commander-in-Chief and the Minister also reported on their contacts with partners and our expectations. We are grateful for the approved packages, but we need them fully and on the battlefield – without delays. And everything we agreed upon with President Biden must be implemented.

I would also like to recognize the rescuers of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine – the entire staff of the Service, everyone who works to save as many lives as possible. In all regions, in every city. Thank you! Kharkiv region – Mykhailo Tebenev, Ivan Lobanov, Oleksandr Omelianenko, Oleksandr Mazur and Yuriy Matsayenko have particularly distinguished themselves these weeks. Thank you, guys! And also Kyiv region – fire and rescue units of the region – Yaroslav Brovchenko, Oleksandr Borozenets, Bohdan Kachenko, Serhiy Nedilko, Tymofiy Vyshnia. I thank you and all the employees of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, all local services that work for people, every police officer and volunteer who helps.

And one more thing.

Donetsk region. Our warriors. Pokrovsk direction, Toretsk, Kurakhove, Kramatorsk. Very tough battles and dozens of Russian assaults every day. I am grateful to every soldier, sergeant and officer who defend our positions and hold back the occupier. I thank all our warriors for their strength!

Glory to Ukraine!

You don’t understand — Russia was provoked into degrading into being a oligarchic dictatorship obsessed with war, territorial grabs, and Stalinist revanchism, then it was provoked into spending over a decade in an economic war on Ukraine and indoctrinating its population with hateful propaganda (a.k.a. “Ukrainians are Nazis and not a real country”), then it was provoked into annexing part of Ukraine’s territory and inciting and sponsoring a war in Ukraine’s east, then it was provoked into concentrating the largest regional military grouping against Ukraine since the end of the Cold War, it was also provoked into openly laughing in the face of a half of the West begging Putin not to invade Ukraine and not sending Ukraine any aid to avoid ‘provoking Russia’, thus Russia was provoked into unleashing the largest European war of aggression since WWII and, due to its very sudden failure to seize Kyiv, it was provoked into massacring the people of Ukraine, derailing all talks via knowingly unacceptable demands, and launching a devastating years-long war to erase dozens of Ukrainian cities from the earth’s face and bomb Ukraine into the cold and dark due to the war’s extremely unsatisfying results more than 2 years after, with some at least some 200,000 military dead on both sides and possibly tens of thousands of civilian fatalities.

You don’t understand, it’s all because Russia just couldn’t stand Ukraine unreasonably seeking to join NATO after everything it has done to Ukraine after 2014, although Russia was more than fine with NATO standing at its border for 20 years in the Baltics and with Finland joining NATO, too — you just have to understand that if Ukraine had joined NATO at some point, Russia would have been restricted in its god-given right to invade and subjugate it as it pleases, it’s not that Ukrainians are a people and have a say over their own lives, I’m a linguistics professor and I know better what’s better for them savages, you know, you don’t understand.

How the fuck is this ok?

How the fuck do we just keep calm & carry on?

Fuck this, the weapons exist to end this war tomorrow & we all just sit on our fucking asses & say maybe we can give Ukraine 1 more patriot, 1 more tank, fuck everyone who has decided to prolong this war. pic.twitter.com/zBZqPQr1bV

Lives could have been protected.
Lives must be protected.
It’s time to stop the terror!

For want of a nail.

Thanks to the successful operation of drones, Russians are sitting in tree lines and forests with a minimum of ammunition, food and water. There were cases when we destroyed a moped with which Russians tried to bring a pack of 6 bottles of water to the position.”

The infamous ‘road of death’ for the Russian occupiers near Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. The location is perfectly targeted by our soldiers, but Putin’s troops stubbornly continue to advance in senseless assaults with one known end.

A Russian tank moved to support the assault on Ukrainian positions but was stopped and burned by a kamikaze drone, and its headless crew was left lying on the battlefield forever.

Very different approaches… So, President Biden is working with his trained staff and other experts to assemble the best possible pitch. And Trump, or at least the people around Trump, are ‘more disciplined’. One can only imagine:

– A handful of staffers have sorted out Trump’s favorite red & pink Starbursts, and are attempting to rejigger traditional potty-training methods to get him to repeat clip-friendly talking points

– Since neither Ivanka nor Melania will cooperate, others negotiating with Kimberly Guilfoyle for her to stand by the main monitor & flash her tits when he needs to be brought to attention

– Peter ‘Bathory’ Thiel’s office has stonewalled on loaning the campaign a few of their spare twinks, so staffers are trying to contact known Trump supporter Tom Brady to donate some fresh premium-quality plasma

Joe Biden also beat Donald Trump twice in debates 4 years ago. But I know Donald's memory isn't that good so he probably forgot about it. https://t.co/EWo9l0TaAX

So (1) it remains very funny to me that people think Biden has a drug that totally fixes cognitive issues but only uses it sometimes, and (2) Miller is slightly smarter than the median fascist creep and clearly realizes that Trump is very likely to faceplant at this debate https://t.co/KpOXJBJ7rD
