This post is in: Mostly Open Thread

I have no words for the news of the day.

All I’ll say is that after today, I think we need two of these.

.

Even Henry is pissed about everything that’s happening.  That’s all we’ll say about that.

No talk of The Horrors, please.

Henry Would Like His Lunch Right Now, Please

Bonus happy Henry.  Because we probably all need him.

Okay, maybe a yawning Henry, in the hopes that maybe we can yawn, too and perhaps even get some sleep.

At the end of August, Just Security published an article reporting on how the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) had dismantled another vital office fighting to keep Americans safe: the Foreign Maline Influence Center (FMIC).

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard recently announced that the functions of the intelligence community’s Foreign Malign Influence Center (FMIC) would be reduced and absorbed into other parts of the U.S. intelligence community. In doing so, Gabbard has dismantled the last remaining U.S. federal government organ dedicated to tracking and analyzing State-sponsored efforts to interfere in U.S. institutions, elections, and society. After the Trump administration shut down related units at the State Department, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, and Department of Justice earlier this year, Gabbard’s announcement is a particular blow to U.S. national security and a gift to America’s adversaries, who have no interest in slowing down malign influence operations that harm U.S. national interests.

In the run-up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the FMIC meticulously documented State-sponsored threats, particularly from China, Iran, and Russia, that targeted candidates and the electoral process itself. It also made public the process by which the executive branch would notify key stakeholders, including the American public, of threats to the election. The FMIC posted regular notifications to the American public, outlining the tactics, techniques, and procedures that State-sponsored actors used to influence the American public surreptitiously. The center highlighted specific instances of deepfake videos that sought to undermine confidence in the integrity of the electoral process, such as a Russian State-sponsored viral clip that purported to show mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania being destroyed. FMIC’s transparency contributed to bipartisan efforts to quickly debunk the video.

The FMIC and Gabbard’s predecessor as DNI, Avril Haines, also publicly outlined the objectives that China, Iran, and Russia apparently had for conducting interference operations against the United States. This helped to shed light on similarities and differences in the three countries’ strategies, including their preferred presidential candidate(s).

To its credit, the FMIC didn’t fixate on one threat actor (say, Russia). Nor did it only fixate on attempts to help then-former President Donald Trump and undermine his Democratic opponents, Joe Biden or Kamala Harris, as “Russia hoax” conspiracists claim the intelligence community did during the 2016 presidential campaign. In fact, the FMIC went to great lengths to explain how some actors, notably Iran, clearly wanted to undermine Trump’s candidacy.

One would think the Trump administration would have an interest in preserving government functions that monitor nefarious foreign government activity targeting the president of the United States. Instead, in her Aug. 20 announcement of the broader ODNI reorganization and the dismantlement of FMIC, with its remaining work spread across other units, Gabbard claimed the office had politicized intelligence (a charge she also leveled at the intelligence community when the administration recently declassified materials purporting to support its claim that Russia did not interfere on behalf of Trump’s 2016 campaign). To the contrary — not only did the FMIC avoid putting its thumb on the scales of the election results, but it also avoided doing anything that could be misconstrued as censorship of free speech. The FMIC did not recommend censoring specific sources of information, nor did it tell citizens what to read or what to believe. There was no deep-state plot to deplatform conservative voices or denigrate the Trump campaign.

While the law passed by Congress in 2019 to authorize the FMIC stipulates that the center cannot be formally closed until 2028, ODNI’s decision to cripple it now means the United States has effectively ended any meaningful government role in addressing the foreign interference threat. In the meantime, China, Iran, Russia, and other nation-States will continue to use information operations, cyber operations, and other hybrid threat vectors to destabilize the U.S. government, subvert American society, and damage U.S. national security. For example, Russia is ramping up efforts this year to inject Russian State propaganda into the data sets informing AI chat bots, a tactic certain to be copied by other adversarial governments. In July, Microsoft unmasked a cyber operation by the Russian State Security Service (FSB) to target foreign embassies in Moscow with malware.

Much, much more at the link. The reason Gabbard has gutted the FMIC, Rubio shut down the remnants of the Global Engagement Center (GEC), why Bondi shut down the KleptoCapture Task Force, and they’re all hell bent on defunding, diminishing, or minimizing America’s already degraded and limited counterintelligence capabilities is because they have rightly figured out that these offices, teams, and task forces are hostile to their intentions as well as those of their boss. This is akin to their complaints that content moderation designed to flag hard right extremist content is actually censoring conservative and Republican content. Which is true because the content is largely indistinguishable and has been for years. Rather than leading Republicans and conservatives to reflect on why the language they use for messaging is often indistinguishable from those of violent white supremacists and neo-NAZIs, asl well as homophones, Islamophobes, xenophobes, etc, the response is that content moderation is really designed to target conservative speech and the speech of Republicans. It isn’t, it’s just doing so because what conservatives say and how they say it is often indistinguishable from hard right domestic violent extremists.

Unfortunately, it amounts to the leaders of agencies and departments that are supposed to be working to protect all Americans functionally removing the capabilities necessary to do so. Which makes these leaders the most insider of insider threats. If we were in the Star Trek universe, this would be equivalent to taking your own shields down before engaging with the Jem Hadar.

Statement by the President of Ukraine Following the Meeting With the President of the European Parliament

17 September 2025 – 18:12

Dear Roberta!

I am very pleased with your visit. You are always a most welcome guest, Madam President!

Dear journalists!

Today, we are truly very happy to see the President of the European Parliament visiting Ukraine – and this is already the fourth visit by Roberta Metsola to Ukraine during the war. Roberta was among the first to come to Ukraine after the invasion began. And overall, the European Parliament and Madam President herself have always consistently supported our state, our independence, our sovereignty, and, of course, our people. And I want to personally thank you for that, Roberta – for your deep attention to Ukraine. We share the same understanding of the situation today: defending Ukraine is defending Europe, and helping Ukraine is helping Europe. Russia has always regarded a united Europe with contempt. Russia never believed that Europe itself could be strong. Over these years, together with Europe’s entire team and many European leaders, we have proven that Russia was completely mistaken in its attitude toward Europe and Europeans. And it is crucial that Ukraine only adds to Europe’s unity, strength, and influence in global affairs. Now we can see how relations between Europe and the United States are being reshaped, how Europe is building its new position in global affairs. It is vital that Europe continues to remain a global actor – a global defender of freedom and human rights. We will ensure this – together, all of us. I am confident in this.

Today, Roberta and I discussed the key areas of engagement between Ukraine and the European institutions. I am grateful for the support of Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations. We are fulfilling our promises, and on our part, we very much expect that the European Union and European leaders will do their part – specifically regarding the clusters. We are counting on the opening of the first cluster as soon as possible, with unanimous support from all EU member states. I also thank the European Parliament for its principled support in this regard. We also welcome the opening of the European Parliament Office in Ukraine, which will strengthen coordination between our parliaments – the Ukrainian Parliament and the European Parliament.

It is important that the European Parliament has always consistently supported sanctions against Russia for this war, and Europe’s leadership in these issues truly matters. We are looking forward to the adoption of the EU’s 19th sanctions package. And we expect that among the main targets of the sanctions will be Russian energy resources and infrastructure for trading them, but also the Russian banking sector and various circumvention schemes exploited by Russia to fund the war. We had a substantive discussion on how to make Slovakia’s and Hungary’s positions more aligned with the European stance, as they still have some energy dependence on Russia. We are also counting on corresponding sanction measures from the United States. Putin must feel that his intention to continue the war, to continue strikes, and, in particular, to transfer destabilizing activity to countries like Poland or Romania – all of this will mean pain for Russia. If Russia does not feel pain, it wages war. They must experience greater economic, political, and other losses so that we can finally move closer to peace. In this context, we also discussed Russian assets, which must be used much more effectively and promptly to support defense against Russian aggression and Ukraine’s recovery. We also spoke about undeniably important social measures for our resilience, such as the construction of shelters. Today, I discussed in detail with Roberta shelters for our schools, kindergartens, universities, shelters for people, and shelters for hospitals. We also count on Europe’s support for our program of free meals for all children in every school in Ukraine. We count on the EU’s substantive involvement in these matters. We thank everyone who is helping us!

And we greatly thank you personally, Roberta, once again!

Glory to Ukraine!

First Lady Zalenska and President Metsola visited a school in Kyiv today. The school’s canteen had been renovated with funding provided to the EU.

2/ The agency did not specify who was detained. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation established that the defendant operated a currency exchange office licensed by the National Bank.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) September 17, 2025 at 10:05 AM

3/ Other individuals, bypassing customs procedures, brought foreign currency into Georgia in cash using special hiding places and delivered it to the defendant’s exchange office.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) September 17, 2025 at 10:05 AM

4/ There, documents were forged to make it appear as though legitimate currency exchanges had taken place, after which the money was deposited in banks as lawful income from currency exchange activities.

1/ The court imposed a 5,000 GEL bail on Elene Khoshtaria as a preventive measure.

A detained leader of the Coalition for Change, who is being criminally prosecuted for writing on the campaign banner of GD’s Tbilisi mayoral candidate, has stated that she will not pay bail.

2/ “Paying bail and thereby getting out is not release — it is a tribute paid to open the prison door, which, of course, I will not pay. Not because it would hurt my pride, but because I cannot call on anyone to fight, nor can I participate in lies and farce”.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) September 17, 2025 at 9:50 AM

3/ “My imprisonment is illegal, just like that of many free people. However, imprisonment is not the end of the fight” — that I can truly promise you,” the letter reads.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) September 17, 2025 at 9:50 AM

4/ Khoshtaria’s action was reportedly in solidarity with a 23-year-old student who wrote the same phrase on the same banner on Sept 9. The student, Megi Diasamidze, was arrested, charged under the Criminal Code, and later released on 2,000 GEL bail, though the case remains open.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) September 17, 2025 at 9:50 AM

5/ Elene Khoshtaria was the only leader of “Coalition for Change” still outside detention. If the court convicts her, all party leaders will then be in custody.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) September 17, 2025 at 9:50 AM

As Lelo and Gakharia essentially disengage from protests, I see former UNM-haters siding with the UNM and former Gakharia supporters praising Elene Khoshtaria.

Crazy times.

Hope this is yet another indication that we are indeed approaching the finish line.

3/ The charges stem from a June 9 incident at Tbilisi City Court, where Datashvili attempted to approach courtroom No. 1 during a hearing for detained pro-European protesters. After a bailiff blocked her, a verbal and physical altercation followed.

The EU

The EU will also set up a “drone alliance” with Kyiv, backed by €6bn in financing to “transform Ukrainian ingenuity into battlefield advantage and into joint industrialisation”, von der Leyen said.

— Christopher Miller (@christopherjm.ft.com) September 17, 2025 at 3:45 AM

From The Financial Times:

The EU is rushing to spend billions on setting up a “drone wall” with technology that has been battle-tested in Ukraine, after Russia’s recent forays into Nato’s airspace.

Last week’s response to the Russian aerial incursions into Poland and Romania showed Nato relies on expensive technology to intercept relatively cheap drones — a glaring vulnerability Moscow can exploit further. To fill the gap, Brussels has encouraged capitals to use EU funds and jointly purchase systems that have worked in Ukraine.

Hours after Nato jets shot down a few of the estimated 19 drones that entered Poland’s airspace, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said Europe had to “build a drone wall” on its eastern border. She said this would be “a European capability developed together, deployed together, and sustained together, that can respond in real time”.

The EU will also set up a “drone alliance” with Kyiv, backed by €6bn in financing to “transform Ukrainian ingenuity into battlefield advantage and into joint industrialisation”, von der Leyen said.

Poland, the Baltic states and Finland — the EU states bordering Russia — have all announced plans to reinforce their frontiers, but officials warn the approach will only be effective if it is unified and built on common and fully-integrated technologies.

One of the EU officials said: “Europe’s defence posture is too fragmented, but this particular area is where we really need to see much more co-ordination.”

“You can’t have one [frontline] state doing one thing on their border and another doing something different,” the official added. “Russia will just tailor their approach to our weaknesses.”

Nato’s eastern flank members are set to receive nearly €100bn in defence-related loans, out of a total of €150bn raised against the EU’s shared budget.

The Security Action for Europe loans “will help” with the drone wall initiative, commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said on Tuesday, “if member states want to have a common approach to protect the EU”.

Daniela Hildenbrand, head of anti-drone solutions at the German defence contractor Hensoldt, said the region was getting “a bit more creative in contractual arrangements to make sure we have an overall protective shield for Europe and Nato”.

“This means exploring how member states can have multinational frameworks or help each other out with capability,” she said.

Much more at the link.

First, better late than never. Second, let’s see if they can actually get their acts together and pull this off.

King Charles expressed his support for Ukraine:

“Today, as tyranny once again threatens Europe, we and our allies stand together in support of Ukraine, to deter aggression, and to secure peace,” he said.

Trump hasn’t actually done anything of note other than flap his gums, waste everyone’s time, and put Ukraine at greater risk. But other than that, sure, no one has done more.

Trump dodged the question of when Ukraine will receive the Patriot air defense systems that the U.S. president announced two months ago.

Andriushchenko reports Russia is turning Mariupol into a base for new offensives, building a covert bypass road near the city for equipment and troops. The route will accelerate force transfers, cut logistics time, and quietly prep the area for future military action.

Virginia Fundraising Update

Big thanks to our anonymous Balloon Juice Angel!

I thought I would share an update on how things stand after the anonymous Angel match yesterday, and where I’m thinking we’ll go from here.

I think we’ll take Virgil Thornton off the board as soon as we hit $5,000.

As I write this, we are about $360 away from our revised goal of $5,000!

Virgil Thornton has no idea who or what Balloon Juice is at this point, and I’m certain that our $5,000 will give us a huge boost in his effort to unseat the only Black Republican in the VA House of Delegates.

Early voting starts in 2 days.  Sept 19.

As I write this, we are $2,000 away from our goal of $7,500 for Kimberly Pope Adams, and I hope we can make our goal.

Either way, I think we’ll end our fundraising for Kimberly Pope Adams at whatever time I wake up on Monday morning.

I’ll contact Kim on Monday and let her know that we have completed our fundraising for her for this cycle.  Dollars go a long way in these Statehouse races, and whatever we raise will make a big difference!

Thermometers to donate are in the sidebar.

National Ground Game

After Monday, we’ll have just 6 weeks left before the November elections.

I’ll be talking with the folks at National Ground Game tomorrow – I want Virginia to be a wake-up call for the people currently running the show in Washington.

I hope to have an update from Four Directions later this week.

The UK should just keep laying on the flattery and then ask Trump for like a whole Blue State and see how he reacts.

Nice hat, Melania: defector.com/nice-hat-mel…

Albert Burneko, at Defector:

President Donald Trump is in the United Kingdom, meeting with the British royal family. Here we see him with the King and Queen of the U.K., plus a British functionary of some sort, and also Kung Lao of Mortal Kombat fame, presumably representing the peoples of Earthrealm…

Ah, hm. I am being told that is actually Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States, wearing Christian Dior. I like her outfit very much! I liked it the first time I saw it, leering through a window in Insidious. Kudos to whatever stylist absolutely nailed her request to go to the royal palace in “Babadook Mode.” Maybe this outfit works better in other environments, but in a room of shriveled 200-year-olds it carries all the metaphorical subtlety of a nationally syndicated political cartoon. I admire the chutzpah it takes to dress to a meeting with the British royals as what dear departed Prince Philip saw lurking behind him in the mirror, exactly seven days before he died…

But seriously, don’t clown poor Melania for this getup. It would have made a lot more sense if the other Spy had shown up to the photo op.

Can’t blame the woman for wanting to signal as publicly as possible that She’s Not With Him — one way or another, her ‘marriage’ is toast within a few months, so she’s gotta update that C.V. — but one assumes this has already inspired another spate of Body Double!!! comments on QAnon social media.

Open Thread: Gawd Bless the Dropkick Murphys

by Anne Laurie|  September 17, 20253:38 pm| 51 Comments

This post is in: Excellent Links, Immigration, Music, Resistance to Trump

Stevie Chick, in the Guardian — “‘This country’s gonna fall on its face. There’s nobody coming to save us’: Boston punks Dropkick Murphys take on Maga”:

Backstage at the Rock la Cauze festival in Victoriaville, Canada, where Boston punk-rock institution Dropkick Murphys are headlining, founding bassist/singer Ken Casey is experiencing an uncharacteristic moment of anxiety.

“We have concerns about going back over the border tonight,” he says, gravely – not for the illicit reasons touring musicians usually fear border crossings, but because Casey’s regular on stage rants against Donald Trump have gone viral. “We’re not worried about being arrested,” he adds. “But we have a show in New York tomorrow. Are we gonna get harassed or held up? We used to come over that border and they’d be, ‘Dropkicks! Come right through!’ But what’s it going to be like now?”

By “now”, Casey means during the second Trump presidency, which has brought the political element always present within Dropkick Murphys’ bolshie, Pogues and Clash-influenced bruisers to the fore. The group’s resistance has found its sharpest expression at their shows, where their anthem First Class Loser is accompanied by videos depicting Trump and former chum Jeffrey Epstein, while Casey’s skirmishes with a vocal minority of Maga Dropkicks fans in the mosh pit have lit up social media. He admits these fans often provoke the worst in him. “How do you know if someone’s in a cult? They hold up a hat all fuckin’ night,” he rages in one clip.

“People tell me, ‘You didn’t use-ta soapbox like this’,” he says on our video call, gathering steam. “Well, we didn’t use-ta be in the midst of an authoritarian takeover!”

Dropkick Murphys are still commanding big blue-collar crowds as they approach their 30th anniversary in 2026. Over the years they’ve scored numerous US Top 10 albums, Bruce Springsteen collaborations and a platinum-seller in the form of civic anthem I’m Shipping Up to Boston, boosted by its appearance in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. But their value system, Casey says, hasn’t changed since the now seven-strong band formed with the aim “to be a voice for working people”. Class and the labour movement are key to the 56-year-old’s identity. “My father died when I was very young. I was raised by my grandfather, a labour organiser who instilled in me the value of a union. In the Boston suburb where I was raised, everyone owed their lives to a union job. It put a roof over our head.”…

show full post on front page

By the 21st century, they had become staples of the US punk-rock circuit, their annual St Patrick’s Day shows among Boston’s hottest tickets, performing and recording with their heroes. “We play Billy Bragg’s There Is Power in a Union over the PA every night before we go on stage,” Casey says. “He opened our St Patrick’s show last year with it and then played Worker’s Song with us. Afterwards, he said, ‘I felt like I was in the fuckin’ Clash for three minutes!’” Springsteen, another member of the Dropkicks’ extended family, recorded their Rose Tattoo for a charity single after the Boston Marathon bombing, and sang Peg O’ My Heart with Dropkicks in Boston, “back when my grandmother Peg was still alive”, says Casey. “He came on with her for the encore – we had to pry her off Bruce’s arm to get her off the stage. I’m almost shocked a guy of that level was so down-to-earth. But he’s always had an affinity with punk. Bruce still walks the talk.”

“Walking the talk” matters to the Dropkicks; their merch is made in the US by union-approved manufacturers, while their Claddagh Fund supports non-profit organisations across Boston. “We were pretty beloved in our city, whether people liked our music or not, because we gave a lot back to the community,” Casey says. Not any more, however. “Now a lot of people in my circles say ‘Fuck Dropkick Murphys’,” he adds, lantern jaw clenching. “Although never to my face. They despise me and the band.”…

Does he fear blowback for his outspokenness, like that suffered by Stephen Colbert – or worse?

“Unlike Stephen, we have no parent company, so we can say what we want,” he says. “Regarding our safety … whatever,” he snarls, disdainfully. “I’ll never have a security guard or anything like that. But you gotta keep your head on a swivel a little bit. Back in the day, we always had a Nazi element gunning for us, but you could see them coming. Now you don’t know who’s who. I’m not sure what’s keeping other people quiet, though, especially in punk-rock. Where’d everyone go? They had the balls to speak out against Bush back in the day. But Bush didn’t have an army of trolls that come after you. Speaking out against Bush wasn’t going to cost you half your fanbase, potentially.”

In his darker moments, Casey reckons “within a year, this country’s gonna fall on its face, and people are gonna feel the pain: recession, inflation, unemployment. There’s nobody coming to save us.” He says he feels “no excitement or happiness” in the group’s anti-Trump screeds winning them newfound fame. “But maybe there’s a slight sense of validation,” he adds. “I talk to the fans every night. One night, an immigrant told me, ‘I moved here, and my partner is American, we have children, and I live in fear of being deported. My own friends have turned on me, they say I’m taking American jobs.’ He was actually in tears at the end. But he said, ‘I feel like someone is speaking on my behalf’. From the earliest days of this band, we wanted to be involved in something that mattered. So we are. I wish it was a different subject and not quite so important, but …”

He sighs. Maybe the border tonight will be a shitshow, but it won’t change how the Dropkicks operate in this darkest of moments. “We’re sticking our neck out and getting a lot of negative attention,” he adds. “But if we don’t do it now, it might be too late.”

RFK Jr. Too Emotional to Lead HHS

Dr. Monarez is testifying at a Senate hearing today. Unlike the wizened nutsack who used to be her boss, she got through her testimony without shouting and flapping her arms around like a lunatic.

HASSAN: When you pushed back on Kennedy’s demands, how did he react?

MONAREZ: He was very upset. The entire meeting was very tense. He was very upset throughout the entirety of our discussion and it was not a productive exchange of information

If Democrats in Congress are going to lay down markers related to healthcare in exchange for the votes necessary to pass the continuing resolution, maybe they can add replacing the nutcase who’s destroying our public health infrastructure to the list.
