Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Taylor Swift Music Recommendations

by WaterGirl|  March 23, 20248:28 pm| 96 Comments

This post is in: Music, Open Threads

A few months ago I asked for suggestions for good Taylor Swift songs because I had never listened to her.

I have had a dozen tabs open with songs you had suggested, but that’s not practical, so I decided to make a playlist.  Now I’m finally ready to listen, and I am looking for suggestions for really good Taylor Swift songs to add to the playlist.

Playlist so far.

What else would you guys recommend?

As long as I get some good Taylor Swift recommendations I’ll be happy, so don’t feel like you’re limited to Taylor Swift.

Open thread.

We’ll have to wait for more details.

Russia is still targeting Kharkiv:

Including another double tap strike. The first strike brings in the emergency services responders and the second one targets them once they’re on site.

Russian forces once again employed their double-strike tactics in a drone attack on Kharkiv last night. A Shahed drone targeted an area where rescuers and police were responding to a previous strike. Sorry, I’m Struggling

Hey y’all, been a bad couple days for me mentally, so I just wanted to check in and then fuck off into a dark room and try not to think or have panic attacks. And no I am not at risk I have been down this road before. I’m going back on the anti-depressants. The experiment done failed.

If you’ve had these issues yourself, you know the drill. If you haven’t, you are a lucky as all hell. I wish I could describe what I was going through so those of you who have never been through this would understand, but everything just feels off. There is a constant sense of impending doom, a pervasive fear that rolls through your body like waves. I start to get numbness in my hands, loss of peripheral vision and light sensitivity, and just this visceral panic that takes over everything. So yeah, good times.

The only thing to do is breathing exercises, exercise, sleep, and wait it out. I’ll be fine. My doctor knows, I called up my therapist, and I will make it. It does make me realize how lucky I am because I have been here before and know I will see the end. But for someone new to this, yowza.

So if I am irritable and or absent in the next few days/weeks, you know why.

Saturday Good News: Basketball Stories/March Madness Open Thread

This post is in: Make The World A Better Place, Sports, We All Need A Little Kindness

As we settle in for more March Madness, thought some good news basketball stories would be fun:

This one is old, but get the tissues:

There’s always one of these proving kids are just…amazing

And just because Pink makes me happy. Love that it was like the world’s largest game of charades as they try to explain to her what’s happening. And her pianist is a kick.

That’s all I got for you this weekend. I’ll try and put together the climate posts for next weekend. I do have some good stuff set aside to share.

I’m not a huge March Madness fan, though I LOVE, LOVE, basketball (GO Nuggets!) but with CSU in a game (sad to see them go in the second game) and CU men’s and women’s teams kicking butt, I have been checking in on those games.  And I’ve got the gardening bug and have been doing what I can before the next snowstorm, including digging up a flagstone path and patio in the middle of my backyard. That works off a ton of stress.

And for those wanting an update, Zander is still having good days – yesterday we went out and sat in the sun, his favorite thing to do. Last night he slept on top of my head, like he always does, and decided when he wanted attention he would swish his big Maine Coon tail across my face until I petted him (that would never fly when he was well). We are coming near time, but I’ll take the good days we have left.

What’s your good news this weekend?

Still a BFD at 14

14 years ago, the ACA was signed into law.  It was the down payment on a commitment to get everyone insured in the US.  And it has cut the uninsurance rate in half with substantial gains after the passage of the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Acts.

This BFD is on the ballot in November.

Saturday Morning Open Thread: President Biden Has An Omnibus Spending Bill to Sign

BREAKING: Senate passes $1.2 trillion funding package in early morning vote, ending threat of partial shutdown https://t.co/kCCXrrYxrI

— The Associated Press (@AP) March 23, 2024

Per the Associated Press, “Senate passes $1.2 trillion funding package in early morning vote, ending threat of partial shutdown”:

The Senate passed a $1.2 trillion package of spending bills in the early morning hours Saturday, a long overdue action nearly six months into the budget year that will push any threats of a government shutdown to the fall. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law.

The vote was 74-24. It came after funding had expired for the agencies at midnight, but the White House sent out a notice shortly after the deadline announcing the Office of Management and Budget had ceased shutdown preparations because there was a high degree of confidence that Congress would pass the legislation and the president would sign it on Saturday.

“Because obligations of federal funds are incurred and tracked on a daily basis, agencies will not shut down and may continue their normal operations,” the White House statement said.

Prospects for a short-term government shutdown had appeared to grow Friday evening after Republicans and Democrats battled over proposed amendments to the bill. Any successful amendments to the bill would have sent the legislation back to the House, which had already left town for a two-week recess.

But shortly before midnight Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced a breakthrough.

“It’s been a very long and difficult day, but we have just reached an agreement to complete the job of funding the government,” Schumer said. “It is good for the country that we have reached this bipartisan deal. It wasn’t easy, but tonight our persistence has been worth it.”…

Rep. Jeffries had a pretty good day:

The House has passed legislation to fund the government, meet the needs of everyday Americans and avoid a shutdown.

Pre-Dawn Open Thread: Are *You* Ready for the Weekend?…

look at this cat! his name is Bruce and he is real https://t.co/9uGUlHOgCC pic.twitter.com/qOslqMnA1c

Incorrect assemblage at the factory, always read the instructions

— Momodog (@Dougalpop1) March 22, 2024

According to I Can Haz Cheeseburger:

Bruce was brought into the vet for reasons unbeknownst to us, probably because his owners were wondering what is up with this crazy chimera cat? It turns out that Bruce is fine and healthy, and the vets describe him as a Minuet, which is a combination of a Persian cat and a Munchkin cat…

Munchkin cats have shortened limbs, like dachshunds. So the little dude inherited a (fortunately modified) ‘peke face’ from the Persian side of his gene line, he’s an XXY male with achondroplasia, and considering his pale eyes, probably a whole bunch of other extremely recessive genes as well. And yet, still (to human eyes) adorably cute… which he probably doesn’t love, either.

Probably a chimera cat. Two different embryos fused together in utero. Rare, but not unprecedented. pic.twitter.com/hj9cEH6nos
