Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

T R E 4 5 O N

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

“woke” is the new caravan.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

The National Guard is not Batman.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

DC Indictment News

I know I am not the only person who gets tired of all the knowing lies – or lazy bullshit –  that gets spread in the quest to speed up the growing lack of trust in our institutions.  This is a nice little rebuttal.

Guessing that many of the folks who need this information the most will not bother to read it, and will continue to spread disinformation.

But maybe some will read it.  With an open mind.  At least the ones who more resemble the lazy bullshit than the knowing lies.

THREAD: I’d like to share some facts. That’s all. Just facts.

Squishable Morning Thread: Just GO, Blago!

by Betty Cracker|  March 22, 20246:50 am| 89 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Corrupt former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who received a prison sentence commutation from kindred spirit Donald Trump, sued his state for barring him from running for public office again. U.S. District Judge Steven Seeger dismissed the case with Suessian flair: (The Hill)

“The complaint is riddled with problems,” Seeger wrote. “If the problems are fish in a barrel, the complaint contains an entire school of tuna. It is a target-rich environment. The complaint is an Issue-Spotting Wonderland.”

“The bottom line is that the judiciary has no power to unimpeach, unconvict, and unremove a public official,” he continued. “The legislature taketh away, and the judiciary cannot giveth back…”

“The case began with great fanfare. Surrounded by microphones and cameras, with a gaggle of press in tow, Blagojevich announced to the world that he might want a sequel in public life,” Seeger wrote. “The book is closed. The last page already turned, and the final chapter of his public life is over. The case never should have been filed.”

The judge then added a quote from Dr. Seuss’s 1972 children’s tale, “Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now.”

“The time has come. The time has come. The time is now. Just Go. Go. GO!,” the quote reads. “I don’t care how. You can go by foot. You can go by cow. Marvin K. Mooney, will you please go now!”

“The case started with a megaphone, but it ends with a whimper,” Seeger continued.

“Sometimes cases in the federal courthouse attract publicity. But the courthouse is no place for a publicity stunt. He wants back. But he’s already gone. Case dismissed.”

Well done, Judge Seeger.

War for Ukraine Day 757: Air Defense Over Kyiv!

by Adam L Silverman|  March 21, 20248:31 pm| 31 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Just one more shopping day till the House GOP majority caucus’s dysfunction shuts down the government! And then they go on vacation for two weeks for Easter.

As I write this, air raid alerts are up over Ukraine from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in the east to Odesa Oblast in the south to Chernivtsi Oblast in the west.

Air raid alert map of Ukraine for 7 PM EDT on 21 March 2024. Air raid alerts are in place from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine down through Odesa Oblast in the south to Chernivitsi Oblast in the west. Air raid alerts are also indicated for the Russian occupied Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts and Crimea.

I checked the flight tracker I trust and she hasn’t posted anything since mid-February. So nothing to report in regard to what do and don’t have in the air right now. Last night, as I was drafting the update, air raid alerts were just going up. The good news is that Ukraine’s air defense intercepted all the missiles, both the ballistics and the hypersonics.

Overnight, Ukrainian air defenders shot down 31 out of 31 russian missiles during the massive air attack on Kyiv.

29 Kh-101 cruise missiles and 2 ballistic missiles (Iskander-M, X-47M2 Kindzhal or KN-23) were destroyed.

Perfect work by Ukrainian warriors. We are also grateful… pic.twitter.com/sJvtJHplAW

Perfect work by Ukrainian warriors. We are also grateful to our partners for strengthening 🇺🇦 air defense capabilities.

The bad news is that the debris rained down on Kyiv causing some nasty damage.

The aftermath of the Russian missile attack on Kyiv this morning.

13 people were injured, a child among them.

Russia launched 31 missiles in the attack: 2 ballistic ones and 29 cruise missiles. All were shot down by Ukrainian Air defense. Glory!

FAFO Open Thread: The IRS Announces It Will Come After Rich Tax Cheats

by Anne Laurie|  March 21, 20246:40 pm| 126 Comments

This post is in: C.R.E.A.M., Excellent Links, Proud to Be A Democrat, Schadenfreude

The IRS is sending out more than 125,000 notices to individuals who made $400,000 or more and failed to file returns between 2017 and 2021.

It's estimated that the richest Americans are dodging $150 billion worth of taxes every year.

This is why IRS funding is a good thing.

— Robert Reich (@RBReich) March 20, 2024

Tis the Tax Season, and while very few people enjoy paying taxes, most of us accept that taxes are the price of civilization. So this might help your mood a little…

IRS chief zeroes in on wealthy tax cheats in AP interview https://t.co/ff3z6fzbGe

— The Associated Press (@AP) March 20, 2024

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel has a message for high-wealth tax cheats who are wrongly deducting private jet travel and otherwise shorting the government on their taxes: Pay your fair share so “others aren’t shouldering the burden of funding our government.”

Werfel, who will hit the one-year mark at the helm of the IRS in April, said in a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press that the agency will expand its pursuit of high-wealth tax dodgers with new initiatives in the coming months and is using tools like artificial intelligence to ferret out abuses and taking the fight to sophisticated scammers…

“It’s having an impact,” Werfel said. Large corporate filers and others are “taking notice that the IRS is ramping up our scrutiny, and I think that will inevitably result in more compliance” — and revenue…

Werfel has been in a race against time to show how improvements to the agency can benefit taxpayers. He said agency priorities include customer service improvements like answering the phones faster and making sure the rich “pay their fair share.”

The agency also is piloting a program for people to file their taxes directly to the agency without the help — or cost — of private commercial software.

Werfel said more than 50,000 people in 12 states have started using the new Direct File system to complete their taxes. The free online tool is available for people with very simple W-2s and who claim a standard deduction for their federal income taxes.

The Direct File rollout has drawn some consternation from commercial software firms like Intuit, as well as Republicans who argue there are free filing programs that already exist.

But so far, Werfel says, “people are telling us that they found it to be quick and easy, and everyone certainly loves that it’s free. And their No. 1 question is: Are we going to have this again next year?”…

After years of looking the other way at tax cheating by the wealthy, especially under Trump, @POTUS Biden has the @IRSnews focused on enforcing our tax laws.
