MAHA Slap Fight! (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  May 13, 202510:37 am| 170 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

As long time readers of this space know, I have the political instincts of a concussed garden snail, so no one should ever pay any mind to my predictions of what’s going to happen in an election. I confidently predicted the elections of both Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris.

Going back decades, I’ve backed the wrong horse in every Democratic primary with one exception: Barack Obama. So it’s no surprise that among the many things I didn’t see coming, I utterly failed to comprehend the danger when Trump’s MAGA movement merged with RFK the Lesser’s woo-woo kooks last year.

In my defense, at first blush, it made for a seemingly unwieldy base coalition, crunchy granola types who haunt dairy farms and fondle cows for raw milk united with human truck-nuts who subsist on bags of pork cracklings dipped in convenience store nacho sauce. I failed to see what they had in common, which is a propensity to credulously swallow the dumbest conspiracy theories. It was enough, damn it.

But now it looks like the cells within that malignant coalition are busily dividing, and with any luck, maybe that will kill the rotten host eventually. Here’s an excerpt from Michelle Goldberg’s NYT column on a MAHA spat that broke out when Kennedy recommended wellness quack Casey Means for surgeon general.

Means is a close ally of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now the secretary of health and human services. Yet much of Kennedy’s Make America Healthy Again, or MAHA, movement has revolted against her nomination. It’s a rift that underscores the instability of a political coalition built on paranoia, distrust and the dogged pursuit of social media clout.

Among the loudest voices railing against Means is Laura Loomer, the conspiracy theorist who has achieved an outsize role in some of Trump’s personnel decisions. In a post on X, she zeroed in on Means’s new age spiritual practices, detailed in a 2024 newsletter article Means wrote about finding love at 35. The surgeon general nominee described working with a medium, doing full moon ceremonies and “plant medicine experiences,” and asking for help from trees. Loomer called her a crackpot and warned, without a trace of irony, “The inmates are running the asylum!”

Loomer! Calling someone else a crackpot!

Kennedy’s former running mate Nicole Shanahan suggested RFK Jr. is being controlled by his siblings. Naomi Wolf (the nutty Naomi, not the Klein) thinks Means and her wellness entrepreneur brother, who also works at HHS, are CIA plants. RFK Jr.’s pushback is just making things worse, according to Goldberg:

Kennedy has responded to these attacks by accusing Means’s detractors of being paid shills for big food, which, as you can probably imagine, has made some of them even angrier. For decades, he’s been telling people that monstrous totalitarian powers control the medical system. In the subculture he’s helped build, scientific knowledge is found not in peer-reviewed articles, but down internet rabbit holes, and all appeals to authority are necessarily suspect. Now the dark energies he’s manifested are coming back to haunt him.

That’s the downside of the do-your-own-research methodology that rejects science and expertise. There’s no pursuit of truth, only clout chasing, and those who become “authorities” under that rotten system will be in the sights of the next band of kooks looking to tear down “the establishment.”

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.

WaterGirl nudged me this weekend to see if I was still posting…which I am…but right now I’m on my last chapter of the latest book and traveling for the week.  So I won’t be around much to do the overnight thing for a bit. But here are a few videos I had set aside…

And if you can – the full moon is pretty spectacular – so check it out.

Feb 28, 2023 • #EarthRestoration #GlobalMovement #JohnDLiu

John D. Liu, the filmmaker, journalist, and ecologist, has created a global movement to restore the Earth. His objective has spread to six continents and has brought together people from different social and cultural contexts. It’s about creating harmony with nature and minimizing poverty, hunger, and social disruptions. Together, we can restore the Earth and create a better future.

This is in my Netflix queue when it drops.

And a little music:

A deep cut of Prince…

I saw Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre perform Revelations (among other amazing dances) when I was in college. I cannot remember a live performance that changed my life like this night did. My world opened up in ways I couldn’t even understand (and I was a theatre major, so I had seen and participated in some spectacular performances).

This was transformational.  Still is…

That’s it for me until I’m back in town and hopefully with a completed book off to my editor. Which should give me a break until the revisions hit.

If you need critter updates (including Reggie’s new backyard friend – we are not counting the garter snake he dropped – unharmed – in my kitchen) you can find them here.

War for Ukraine Day 1,173: Well that Didn’t Take Long

Well that didn’t take long:

🔴 Kremlin rejects Zelenskyy’s offer for peace talks with Putin in Istanbul.

— UNITED24 Media (@united24media.com) May 12, 2025 at 9:38 AM

UNITED24 Media has the details:

The Kremlin has rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal to hold direct talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Istanbul on May 15, with top Russian officials denouncing the idea as political theater and insisting Moscow will not engage under any form of pressure, Konstantin Kosachev, deputy speaker of the Federation Council, dismissed Zelenskyy’s proposal, calling it “comedy and spectacle,” Russian state media TASS reported on May 12.

Moscow issued its response shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced in a video address that he would travel to Türkiye on Thursday and stated that he expected Russian leader Vladimir Putin to join him there for direct talks.

“I will be in Türkiye this Thursday, May 15, and I expect Putin to come to Türkiye as well — in person. I hope that this time, Putin won’t look for excuses for why he ‘can’t’ come,” Zelenskyy said.

“High-level meetings, especially under such difficult circumstances, are absolutely not arranged this way,” Kosachev said, pointing to the long diplomatic groundwork that preceded previous potential summits between Putin and US President Donald Trump.

Kosachev accused Zelenskyy of attempting to “shift blame” onto Russia and questioned the sincerity of the Ukrainian leader’s intentions. “Zelenskyy doesn’t need a meeting with the Russian president — not at all. In fact, he should be afraid of such a meeting,” he added.

Vladimir Dzhabarov, deputy chair of the Federation Council’s foreign affairs committee, rejected the notion entirely, saying Zelenskyy had not been invited to Istanbul in the first place.

“Who invited him to Istanbul? Does he really think our president would meet personally with someone who has blood on his hands, who betrayed the memory of the great heroism of both Ukrainians and the entire Soviet people — the heroism of his own grandfather? Who is he, that we should sit down with him at the negotiating table?” Dzhabarov said.

He characterized Zelenskyy’s statement as a ploy to later claim he was ready for talks, adding, “Negotiations will take place, but through designated representatives, as has happened before.”

Another Federation Council official, Andrey Klimov, said the possibility of a meeting wasn’t entirely off the table, but unlikely.

“There is a chance [it could happen], but it’s not 100 percent, because everything could run into Kyiv’s obstinacy. Fine, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin comes. Zelenskyy comes. And then what? How are the talks supposed to proceed? Will others be involved? Trump will be nearby at the time — will he want to participate? There are still many, many questions,” Klimov said.

Earlier, Zelenskyy called Russia’s proposal for direct peace talks a “good sign,” but stressed that negotiations can only proceed if Moscow confirms a full and lasting ceasefire starting May 12.

Least surprising development ever.

A ceasefire is only possible if Russia is given guarantees that Ukraine will not defend itself when we attack it again.

Pretty much.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Unfortunately, the World Still Has Not Received a Clear Response from Russia to the Numerous Proposals for a Ceasefire; Russian Shelling and Assaults Continue – Address by the President

12 May 2025 – 21:00

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

I’ve just spoken with President Erdoğan of Türkiye. It was a meaningful conversation. I’m grateful to the President for the support. I reaffirmed to him my readiness for direct and substantive negotiations with Putin. Ukraine has always supported diplomacy. I’m ready to come to Türkiye. Unfortunately, the world still has not received a clear response from Russia to the numerous proposals for a ceasefire. Russian shelling and assaults continue. Moscow has remained silent all day regarding the proposal for a direct meeting. A very strange silence. One way or another, Russia will have to end this war – and the sooner, the better. There is no sense in continuing the killing. President Erdoğan has expressed full readiness to host the meeting. It is important that President Trump fully supports the meeting, and we would like him to find an opportunity to come to Türkiye.

There was also a great deal of work today with our partners – with the Americans, with the Europeans – diplomatic work.

I also had a very good conversation with the Pope today — I started the day with it. Pope Leo XIV spoke warm and very important words about Ukraine and our people – about a just and durable peace for our country, and the return of our people – the unconditional return of prisoners and children who were abducted by Russia. I thanked him for his support. We discussed possible meetings, and I invited the Pope to visit Ukraine. Today, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reported to me on his conversations with colleagues from the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland, France, the European Union, and the United States. I’m grateful to all of them for their constructive approach and their readiness to take the necessary steps to make peace a reality. From the very beginning, Ukraine has not wanted this war – not for a single second. Together with our partners, we are working to ensure security, preparing a solid foundation for peace, and taking joint action to make diplomacy truly work.

I held a Staff meeting today. The key topics were Ukraine’s missile program and our drones – all types of drones we need. There were also reports on drone usage – precision and effectiveness of strikes on the front lines. I want to thank all our manufacturers working to ensure that Ukraine maintains its technological edge. We are also working to protect our infrastructure and ensure long-term defense capabilities – these are systemic decisions, and responsibility for their implementation is personal.

And one more thing.

I want to thank all our warriors – each and every one who is now at the front, on combat posts and missions. Today, Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi delivered reports – Donetsk and Kursk directions are where the fiercest fighting is ongoing. I want to thank our men of the 33rd, 225th, and 425th Assault Regiments. In the Kramatorsk direction – warriors of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade – well done! In the Pokrovsk direction – the 14th Operational Brigade of the National Guard and the 117th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – thank you! Fighting alongside all our Forces at the front are also units of the National Police of Ukraine – the “Liut” and “Khyzhak” assault brigades, KORD units, and rifle battalions – thank you all! Ukraine has defended its independence. Ukraine defends its right to life every single day. And we will definitely guarantee Ukraine’s security – exactly as needed.

Glory to Ukraine!

New pope breaks with Francis to support Kyiv and ceasefire push

https://www.ft.com/content/c933d769-9791-43e4-abae-9f9b495ccde1

— Financial Times (@financialtimes.com) May 12, 2025 at 7:47 AM

From The Financial Times:

Pope Leo XIV has called Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss Ukrainian children abducted by Russia and a western backed 30-day ceasefire, in a shift from the previous pontiff who had struck a more neutral stance on Moscow’s war.

Ukraine’s president said on Monday that his first conversation with the new pope, who was elected last week, was “very warm and truly substantive” and thanked him for his support.

“We deeply value his words about the need to achieve a just and lasting peace for our country and the release of prisoners,” he said.

The Vatican confirmed the two men had spoken on the phone but declined to provide any further details.

Pope Leo on Sunday said: “I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian people,” urging for “an authentic, just and lasting peace as soon as possible”.

“May all the prisoners be freed and may the children return to their families,” he added.

His explicit support for Ukraine in its years-long war against Russia’s invasion was met with appreciation from Ukrainians and especially the country’s Catholics, who viewed the remarks more positively than the late Pope Francis.

After Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Francis avoided directly accusing Moscow of aggression, suggesting that Nato had provoked Russia and often treating the warring parties as suffering equally. Last year the late pope caused an outcry when he suggested that Ukraine should have the courage to surrender to bring a swift end to the bloodshed.

“When you see that you are defeated, that things are not going well, you need to have the courage to negotiate,” Francis told an interviewer for a Swiss television last year, suggesting that Kyiv should “have the courage to wave the white flag”.

By contrast Leo in 2022 — who was a bishop in Peru at the time — condemned Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine as “imperialist”, saying that “Russia wants to conquer a territory for reasons of power” and that it committed crimes against humanity in the conflict.

“We really feel that Pope Leo XIV will be the pope of peace for the long-suffering, war-torn Ukraine,” said the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Shevchuk.

Ukrainians had criticised Francis for calling Ukrainians and Russians “brothers” — a term used by Russian President Vladimir Putin to justify his invasion. The late Pope Francis had also sent cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the archbishop of Bologna, on two humanitarian missions to Moscow to try to negotiate the return of abducted Ukrainian children.

The Vatican said that “a certain number” of children were returned as a result of the church’s mediation effort. But it was unclear how many came back.

Zelenskyy on Monday said a key point of his discussion with Pope Leo focused on the nearly 20,000 Ukrainian children that his office said had been forcibly taken by Russia. A Financial Times investigation last year found Ukrainian children who were abducted and moved to Russia in the early months of the Kremlin’s 2022 full-scale invasion had been put up for adoption by authorities, in one case under a false Russian identity.

Senator Murphy’s Theory of the Case

by Betty Cracker|  May 12, 20252:52 pm| 131 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics

An eternity ago, i.e., last week probably, one of y’all flagged a NYT interview Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) did with Ross Douthat, the neckbearded weirdo Times columnist. “To read or not to read” was a real dilemma for me.

Since I mostly approve of the way Murphy is handling the present authoritarian crisis, I’m interested in what he has to say. But I suspected straining Murphy’s thoughts through a Douthat filter would work like a water un-purifier, adding possibly harmful and foul-tasting crap to an otherwise potable beverage.

I was not wrong. There was way too much Douthat. He predictably tried to shoehorn Murphy into his (Douthat’s) fanatical theocratic worldview. I am not making this example up: Twice, Douthat insisted that Murphy repeat a quote from Barack Obama’s keynote address at the 2004 DNC: “We worship an awesome God in the blue states.”

Murphy acknowledged the reality behind the quote — there are plenty of Christians in blue states. But he declined to repeat the quote, to his credit.

Despite Douthat’s antics, Murphy’s take on where the party is and how it should move forward is interesting, in my opinion. There are a few de-douthatized comments below the fold that outline Murphy’s theory of the case Democrats should be making to voters, and here’s a gift link to the whole thing if you want to pick through the Douthat dung to find the Murphy kernels yourself.

show full post on front page

Murphy points out that Republicans’ populism is entirely fake. He notes that Trump is engaging in unprecedented corruption and rewarding cronies like Musk while not doing shit to bring down prices and address inflation, etc., which is what swing voters say they elected him to do.

Murphy believes Dems need to take a genuine populist approach and avoid defending a status quo that wasn’t working for lots of people. He frames it as “unrigging the economy” and “unrigging the government,” saying the two are explicitly linked in a system where rich donors can buy the government they want. And he acknowledges there will be tradeoffs.

(W)hat I argue for is that the Democratic Party should be more overtly populist and more pugilistic, more confrontational in its populism — meaning that you are more regularly naming the individuals, the organizations and the companies that are screwing voters; that we might become more overtly antagonistic to tech companies; that we might be more willing to name individual health care companies and pharmaceutical companies that are price gouging; that we would explain what the takeover of our health care system by the private equity industry is going to mean for quality and prices.

If we did that, yes, you’re right, we would probably lose some piece of our coalition. There would probably be a handful of voters in Greenwich, Conn. — I’ll name it, right? — that would be unhappy with the way in which we were calling out and naming certain companies or certain industries that were harming voters.

I think the net benefit to the party of that kind of confrontational politics of explaining who’s screwing you — which is what voters want, they want you to explain who’s screwing them — and an opening up of the tent would net far more voters into the coalition than it would lose in a group of very, very wealthy individuals who were probably with us only because of Trump’s ethical problems and social issues that they were — that made them very distasteful.

I don’t know that Murphy is right when he says the way back to political power lies in center-left populism, but he’s definitely correct to call the Trump version of populism phony. And I think he’s right to note that Dems need to find better ways to explain to voters who’s screwing them because Republicans are accusing the wrong groups publicly while serving the actual culprits behind the scenes.

Of course Douthat brought up the most important challenge facing Americans today, which is that one of the 10 transgender athletes competing in NCAA sports might out-swim or out-fence or whatever a mediocre cis woman.

Douthat personalized it by noting that he’s raising girls (poor things!) whereas Murphy has sons only, implying that Murphy can’t really comprehend the panic Douthat feels about the prospect that his daughters might find themselves on a sports team with a trans girl. I wasn’t particularly impressed with Murphy’s response on that.

My feeling on this is that we would probably be better off with each individual jurisdiction — state or school board or municipality — being able to make up their mind for themselves. That would allow for a community like West Hartford, Conn., to come to a different conclusion than another community might. It doesn’t change my position on the issue. I don’t have any fear of transgender athletes participating in sports, but…

Yes, my conclusion is that I would support those athletes being able to participate in my community, right? In my community. But I would not substitute my judgment and my community’s judgment for another community’s judgment.

So, basically, leave it up to the states/communities. I think I know why Murphy favors that approach; he wants to reduce the salience of trans rights in elections.

I can understand the logic. On a recent podcast, TPM reporter Kate Riga speculated that returning the abortion issue to the states is probably how Trump and Republicans reduced the salience of it last year.

My issue with that approach on trans rights is similar to my objection to letting states deny women access to reproductive healthcare. I think women are less than fully equal citizens if states can deny our right to bodily autonomy. The same is true for trans people in Murphy’s proposal.

Murphy also shares thoughts about how to keep social media companies from harming kids, i.e., requiring them to have a verification system to ensure minors under age 13 can’t have their own accounts, making sure algorithms can’t get their hooks into minors until age 18, etc. I have no idea how feasible this is or how helpful it would be.

Anyway, I don’t agree with everything Murphy said in that interview with uber-dweeb, but I’m glad he’s out there taking the fight to Republicans. He and Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost have teamed up to do town halls nationwide. Over the weekend, they were in Sarasota talking to people in a chickenshit House Republican’s district. (YouTube) Good for them.

Open thread.

PS: This large-ish gator was booming across the river a while ago. They’ve been frisky lately, which reaffirms my decision to eschew kayaks and other vessels without high gunwales.

This post is in: Democratic Politics, Open Threads, Politics

I started to write this nearly a week ago.

Another mostly “normie” week for me.  The big house project, and the start of gardening season.

10 days or so ago I put up the post titled No Data, No Source, Just Vibes, saying that it sure felt like something was shifting.  At that point the orange monster had already lost the election in Canada and had not yet lost the election in Australia.

A week ago – last Monday, I believe – Joyce Vance wrote her The Week Ahead newsletter, and she seemed to agree with me.  As a country we saved ourselves before, more than once, and she seems to think we can do it again.  She even manages to extend a bit of grace for it taking some time for us to pull ourselves up after the shock.

At dinner this weekend, a friend told me that one of the most encouraging conversations she’d had recently involved a look at how other countries that have been through a democratic backsliding process, like Hungary and Poland, did. It turns out that the temporary paralysis that came with the first 100 days of this administration is fairly normal for countries in this position, especially for the opposition. Then, everyone gathers themselves together and moves forward.

The timing of our conversation was perfect, because as I’ve been doing a lot of research about how other countries have worked through attempts by would-be dictators to take over, as I continue to work on my book. I had reached the same conclusion—that giving ourselves a little grace for the shock of dealing with a president who wants to dismantle democracy is appropriate. But it’s also important to remind ourselves that just like Americans saved the country during the Civil War, during the Civil Rights era, during Watergate, we can do it again.

The moment calls for courage, and if elected officials, regardless of party, can’t muster it, then they need to step out of the way (and we don’t need to reelect them). It’s a failure of imagination to think government has to be the enemy. That it has to be stagnant, cowardly, and mired in gridlock. But at a bare minimum, our elected officials should be capable of defending the Constitution. Why else do they take an oath to uphold it? Trump offers only the politics of grift and revenge, and that is not democracy.

This is where we are as we start the week ahead. It’s time to move forward. Our progress may feel slow. It may not always be linear. But we are beginning, and right now, it feels important to be here and to keep going.

For the final piece of the trifecta,  Trump lost the election for Pope, as well, on May 8.  (How can that be just 4 days ago????)

We have a million miles to go, but it feels like the tide is turning.

It sure feels to me like it’s time for us to ramp things up.

We certainly live in interesting times.
