Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Consistently wrong since 2002

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

This fight is for everything.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

In after Baud. Damn.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Everybody saw this coming.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

War for Ukraine Day 1,053: A Brief Saturday Night Update

by Adam L Silverman|  January 11, 20257:40 pm| 26 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Two quick housekeeping notes tonight. First, Rosie had her three month post-chemo check in with the vet today. The vet is thrilled with how she’s doing and everything looks good.

Second, I’m just going to run through the basics tonight.

From The Kyiv Post:

Edgars Platonovs, a 41-year-old Latvian volunteer soldier fighting for Ukraine, was killed in action in December on the eastern front, the Latvian Armed Forces reported on Jan. 10.

Platonovs was fighting in the areas near the village of Novoiehorivka in the largely Russian-occupied Luhansk Oblast as part of the Ukrainian military’s International Legion, composed of mostly foreign volunteers, according to the Latvian Armed Forces. The military said that the volunteer was killed on Dec. 25, 2024.

Platonovs’ death is among the huge costs that Ukraine and those helping the country have had to pay to fend off the relentless Russian offensives since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Many foreign fighters – like Platonovs – were killed and wounded in Ukraine, but Kyiv has not disclosed the casualty figures.

“Another of our volunteer soldiers has died defending the freedom and independence of Ukraine. Our deepest condolences to the relatives and comrades of Edgars Platonovs,” Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said on social media platform X, adding: “Eternal memory to the hero!”

Unlike many other foreign volunteers, Platonovs had not served in the Latvian Armed Forces before arriving in Ukraine. His family praised him as a “loving son, our older, strong and caring brother, who always did everything with all his heart and conviction,” as cited by Delfi news website.

“Edgars was a kind, sincere and always positive person who never lost faith in himself and his principles,” his family said, according to Delfi.

Earlier in October 2023, a Russian drone attack had killed another Lithuanian – 28-year-old Vitalijs Smirnovs – in the Lyman area of Donetsk Oblast.

Here’s President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

A Joint Task for Arms Manufacturers, Government Officials, and All Those Involved – to Make This Year a Record One in Terms of Drones – Address by the President

11 January 2025 – 14:37

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

I have just held a Staff meeting.

The main focus was on our drone operations and procurement for this year, procurement of everything the Defense Forces need.

Today reports were made on contracts – those that are already being implemented and those that are still planned.

It is a joint task for arms manufacturers, our Government officials, and all those involved – to make this year a record one in terms of all types of drones, as well as to significantly increase the production of Ukrainian missiles, artillery, and all the necessary equipment.

I have given instructions to increase the number of orders for drones. This is already being implemented.

Our arsenals are one of the guarantees of our independence, just as the precision of our warriors is.

And I thank all our units that carry out strikes on Russia’s territory: on military facilities, on the occupier’s military logistics. More and more such important results should be achieved.

A good sanctions strike was also carried out this week, and I am grateful to our partners for that.

We have American sanctions against Russia’s oil sector – sanctions against the shadow tanker fleet, against companies like Surgutneftegaz, which is Putin’s personal wallet. I am also grateful for the sanctions against Rosatom officials, and it is important to put pressure on the Russian nuclear industry for still holding our Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant hostage.

The United Kingdom is also taking its own new sanctions steps to limit Moscow’s energy revenues. We also have a new sanctions package from Japan against Russian arms production: it restricts the supply of components and some significant schemes that support Russia’s arms production.

These days, during my visit to Italy, we also had discussions, in particular, about sanctions. Italy firmly supports this pressure on Russia. I am grateful for the assistance in blocking Russian sanction bypassing schemes. As well as for our joint efforts within the EU to continue applying all forms of pressure on Russia to make it seek peace.

Today, Minister of Defense Umerov also reported on his talks with partners at Ramstein: our defense coalitions – they are working effectively.

And another result of this week. Our guys from the Special Operations Forces, namely the Tactical Group No. 84, as well as airborne warriors, have taken two soldiers from North Korea prisoners. Both are alive and have already been brought to Kyiv. They were captured in the Kursk region, and it was not easy: other North Korean soldiers and Russians keep trying to finish off their wounded Koreans – specifically to prevent them from being captured. Now these two are receiving medical care and talking to SSU investigators. Russians issue their documents to these Koreans, but they will not deceive anyone. Russia is the one doing everything to prolong and escalate the war, and it will be held accountable.

Glory to all our warriors! Glory to Ukraine!

Slovakia:

🤣 Slovak PM calls Zelenskyy beggar and blackmailer

— Ukrainska Pravda 🇺🇦 (@pravda.ua) January 11, 2025 at 1:53 PM

From Ukrainska Pravda:

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has harshly criticised Ukraine as an unreliable partner and said he is tired of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelling around Europe “begging” and “blackmailing others”.

Source: Robert Fico in a speech at a parliamentary committee on Friday, a video of which he posted on his Facebook page, as reported by European Pravda.

Details: The parliamentary committee meeting had been convened by the Slovak opposition, which demanded that Fico explain his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow and provide information about Slovakia’s next steps regarding the termination of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.

Fico said that two solutions to the issue of gas transit from Ukraine to Slovakia had been prepared and claimed Ukraineʼs Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal had agreed to them.

One of these was to have been an arrangement between Russia and Azerbaijan allowing Slovakia to receive Azerbaijani gas, but according to Fico, Zelenskyy thwarted the arrangement.

The second option was a proposal for SPP, the Slovak state-owned energy supplier, to set up a subsidiary on the Russian-Ukrainian border so that gas could be transported to Slovakia via Ukraine.

Fico called Ukraine’s president unreliable and said he sometimes gets “fed up with him”.

Quote from Fico: “He [Zelenskyy] goes around Europe just begging and blackmailing others, asking for money. It just has to stop.”

More details: The Slovak prime minister said Russia, on the other hand, has always been a reliable partner when it comes to energy supply.

Quote from Fico: “Russia has never deceived us, unlike Ukraine. I remember the situation in 2009 when I was in Ukraine and asked Ukrainian Prime Minister [Yulia] Tymoshenko to give us some gas from the reservoirs they have in the western part of Ukraine, and I was told to go to hell. These are typical Ukrainians.”

Background:

  • Fico became anti-Ukrainian because of his resentment towards Tymoshenko.
  • Slovak President Peter Pellegrini said that he refused to pay an official visit to Kyiv because Ukraine had stopped the transit of Russian gas.
  • Fico has also made a range of threats against Kyiv, including threatening to veto EU decisions on Ukraine.

⚡️ Putin to push for barring Ukraine’s NATO accession in expected talks with Trump, FT reports.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) January 11, 2025 at 7:04 AM

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main goals in any peace negotiations include prohibiting Ukraine from ever entering NATO and reducing allied military presence in the eastern flank, the Financial Times reported, citing a former Kremlin official and a source who discussed the matter with Putin.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) January 11, 2025 at 7:04 AM

Here are the details from The Kyiv Independent:

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main goals in any peace negotiations include prohibiting Ukraine from ever entering NATO and reducing allied military presence in the eastern flank, the Financial Times reported on Jan. 10, citing a former Kremlin official and a source who discussed the matter with Putin.

The news comes as the Kremlin signaled willingness to meet U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to hammer out a deal on ending Russia‘s war against Ukraine. No concrete plans or date have been set, though Moscow said any face-to-face meeting would occur only after Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

Trump vowed to bring Kyiv and Moscow to the negotiating table and swiftly end the full-scale war that nears its third anniversary. Earlier this week, he told reporters that arrangements for a meeting with Putin are underway.

The U.S. president-elect said previously that specific peace proposals are still being worked out. A pitch leaked from Trump’s team — freezing the front lines, postponing Ukraine’s NATO accession by 20 years, and deploying European peacekeepers on the ground — has already been rejected by Russia.

Trump’s incoming peace envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said that the president-elect’s aim is not to “give something to Putin or the Russians” but to “save Ukraine and save their sovereignty.” Nevertheless, Trump has often voiced sympathies for the Russian leader, prompting fears he might cut a deal unfavorable to Ukraine.

Putin’s two reported main goals mirror demands raised by Moscow shortly before the start of the full-scale invasion. The Biden administration and NATO allies rejected the demands at the time.

Ukraine has ramped up its efforts to join the alliance after the outbreak of the full-scale war, calling in the best possible guarantee that Russia will not resume its aggression in the future. President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested that Ukraine could enter NATO gradually, with the collective defense principle initially not extending to occupied territories.

The push for peace talks comes as both Kyiv and Moscow face mounting challenges connected to the ongoing war.

Ukrainian forces struggle to hold back Russia’s advance in the east due to manpower shortages while the future of Western support grows uncertain under Trump. Chances of retaking the fifth of Ukraine’s territory that Russia occupies appear increasingly slim, at least in the foreseeable future.

In turn, Russia grapples with soaring inflation caused by record military spending, and its casualties are believed to range between 600,000-800,000 dead and wounded, outpacing all of Moscow’s post-World War II conflicts combined.

Yeesh, these guys…

🔒 Ukrainian Armed Forces videos show North Korean prisoner being evacuated

— Ukrainska Pravda 🇺🇦 (@pravda.ua) January 11, 2025 at 9:00 AM

From Ukrainska Pravda:

Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SOF) have released a video showing their operatives capturing and transporting a North Korean soldier, an event previously reported by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Source: SOF; Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces

Details: The Ukrainian military reported that SOF operatives had provided first aid to the North Korean prisoner after evacuating him from the battlefield.

Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces reported that the North Korean soldier had been captured during his first combat mission, specifically during an assault on the positions of the 95th Air Assault Brigade Polissia. The prisoner was found to be armed with Russian-made equipment and weapons.

⚡️ Ukraine captures 2 North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, Zelensky says.

“This task was not easy,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said, adding that other North Korean soldiers usually “finish off their wounded” to prevent capture.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) January 11, 2025 at 7:15 AM

From The Kyiv Independent:

Ukrainian troops captured two North Korean soldiers as prisoners of war (POWs) in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Jan. 11.

“This task was not easy,” he said in a Telegram post.

“Usually, Russia and other North Korean military personnel finish off their wounded and do everything possible to ensure that no evidence of the participation of another state — North Korea — in the war against Ukraine is preserved.”

The two wounded soldiers received necessary medical care and are in the custody of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kyiv, according to Zelensky. The president applauded Ukrainian paratroopers and soldiers from the Special Operation Forces for capturing the North Koreans.

North Korea deployed around 12,000 soldiers in Kursk Oblast, where Ukraine launched a surprise cross-border incursion in August 2024 to bring the war to Russia, a senior Ukrainian official familiar with the intelligence told the Kyiv Independent in December 2024.

Zelensky’s statement comes nearly two weeks after the South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) said that Ukrainian troops had captured a wounded North Korean soldier in late December who died soon of his wounds.

“We confirmed through a friendly nation’s intelligence organization that a North Korean soldier, captured alive on Dec. 26, died a short while ago as (his) wounds worsened,” the NIS said on Dec. 27,as cited by South Korean Yonhap News Agency.

Applauding the “irrefutable evidence” of North Korean soldiers’ participation in the Russian war against Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said on Jan. 11 that the POWs are being questioned with the help of Korean translators and South Korean intelligence.

One of the North Korean POWs said he was born in 2005 and was a rifleman who had been going through military service in North Korea since 2021, according to the SBU.

“It is noteworthy that the prisoner, like the Russian military at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, emphasizes that he was supposedly going for training and not for a war against Ukraine,” the SBU said in its Telegram post.

The other POW was born in 1999 and has served in the North Korean army since 2016 as a sniper reconnaissance officer, the SBU said, citing its preliminary data.

The first POW was issued with an ID document under the name of another person from Russia’s Tuva Republic, while the second one had no documents at all.

The Special Operation Forces shared a video purporting to show the capture of the North Korean soldiers in Kursk Oblast by operatives of the Tactical Group 84.

“After evacuating them from the battlefield, the Special Operation Forces operatives provided first aid to the North Korean captives,” the statement read.

North Korean troops have thus far suffered over 1,000 casualties since December, though other estimates are much higher, Austin said on Jan. 9. Zelensky placed the number of North Korean casualties as high as 4,000, but the figures cannot be independently verified.

Only limited videos of the North Korean soldiers appeared online, making it difficult to draw conclusions about their combat abilities.

It’s intriguing that the military ID of the captured North Korean soldier mentioned by Zelensky lists his name as Aranzyn Antonin Akhsovich and claims he was supposedly born in the Republic of Tuva.

🚨⚠️ Russians bypass Pokrovsk from south and approach Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

— Ukrainska Pravda 🇺🇦 (@pravda.ua) January 11, 2025 at 6:03 PM

From Ukrainska Pravda:

The Russian army has decided not to assault Pokrovsk head-on, but to go around it from the south to the west, thus approaching Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.

Source: two Ukrainska Pravda sources among the military on the Pokrovsk front, including Serhii Filimonov, commander of the 108th Da Vinci Wolves Separate Mechanised Battalion

Details: The Russians are currently advancing towards Kotlyne and Udachne, two settlements located on the Mezhova-Pokrovsk road. According to the map maintained by the Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState, the Russians are less than 2 km away, but Ukrainska Pravda has information that they are less than a kilometre away.

This means that the Russians have completely blocked the Mezhova-Pokrovsk road, an important logistical artery for Ukraine’s defence forces that connects Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with Pokrovsk.

The distance from the Russian ledge near Kotlyne and Udachne to the administrative boundary of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast is 7 km.

Quote from Filimonov: “It was obvious. The Russians want to cut off the logistics and take the city [Pokrovsk – UP] without a fight.”

Details: However, another Ukrainska Pravda source is convinced that Pokrovsk is not a target for the Russians. Their key objective is to reach Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and develop their offensive there.

Kharkiv Oblast:

💥 🔥 3rd Assault Brigade demolishes 20 pieces of Russian equipment in Kharkiv Oblast – video

— Ukrainska Pravda 🇺🇦 (@pravda.ua) January 11, 2025 at 11:26 AM

Ukrainska Pravda has the details.

Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Assault Brigade published footage of combat action on 8 and 9 January in Kharkiv Oblast, during which the Russians lost 20 pieces of equipment.

Details: The brigade noted that “it was almost like a  Battle of Brody”, as the Russians lost 20 pieces of equipment during combat. [The Battle of Brody, fought from 23 to 30 June 1941, was a significant tank battle in the early phase of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Although the Soviet forces inflicted heavy losses on the Germans, they were outmanoeuvred and suffered substantial tank losses due to poor logistics, German air superiority and a breakdown in command. The battle is recognised as one of the largest tank engagements of World War II.]

Quote: “On 8 and 9 January, the occupiers headed towards the brigade’s positions with the forces of the 4th Guards Tank Division of the 1st Red Tank Army to make a breakthrough.

Part of the column was stopped on the way by anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) strikes. The BMP infantry combat vehicles and tanks pulled off the route and started blowing up mines. The enemy attacked using FPV. The pontoon crossing was demolished, and a tank sank. Shells and artillery fire were directed towards the enemy infantry. The survivors began their escape.

The enemy lost an entire column but attempted an assault again, this time with an armoured group from four directions. After being targeted by the brigade’s soldiers, enemy vehicles were destroyed by ATGMs and unmanned aerial vehicles.”

Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan Oblast, Russia:

There is a fire at the Taneco oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Russia. Preliminary, one of the columns is on fire. An air raid alarm is sounding. According to eyewitnesses, employees are currently being evacuated from the plant. There are no casualties, presumably.

State of Our Altered States Weekend Reading: The Next Drug Epidemic Is Blue Raspberry Flavored

by Anne Laurie|  January 11, 20257:10 pm| 55 Comments

This post is in: Excellent Links, Popular Culture

Nitrous oxide (marketed as galaxy gas) as the hot new drug for the kids and sold in smoke shops with basically no laws or regulations seems really bad.

I knew it was a thing but I had no idea it was this bad for you. pic.twitter.com/R16oinYpjN

— yoni rechtman (@yrechtman) January 8, 2025

It seemed, to me, like a bad Phillip K. Dick pastiche… but apparently our all-American techbro hustle culture, in combination with 50 years of *wink-wink* ‘but of course we don’t want to use these illicit chemicals for getting high, heaven forfend’ hypocrisy has led to a ‘burgeoning epidemic’ of teenagers risking permanent damage to their nervous systems huffing stuff brand (*wink, wink*) ‘for culinary purposes only’. NYMag on the New New Thing:

In early 2023, Alex took a job at Cloud 9, a strip-mall smoke shop off Atlanta’s I-85. He had recently graduated from college and wanted something laid-back; the shop, with its graffitied ceilings and cheesy blue-light displays, seemed like the ideal register job for a stoner with a music degree.

It didn’t take long for him to realize that many of his customers weren’t there for rolling papers or vapes. They were coming instead for Galaxy Gas, the shop’s toddler-size, candy-flavored, Day-Glo–colored tanks of nitrous oxide. He didn’t know anything about nitrous when he started, but his manager walked him through the basics. “They had to teach me all the legal loopholes you had to jump through, that you had to tell customers that it was for infusing drinks or making whipped creams,” he says.

Soon, he understood exactly what nitrous oxide was. How could he not? His customers were buying hundreds of dollars worth of tanks at a time, inhaling as much as they could in the parking lot of the store, then coming back for more, often with strange new limps and tremors. “One guy would come a bunch of times a day,” Alex says (employees’ names have been changed for privacy). “We’d first see him in the morning; he’d just stuff whatever he could fit in his book bag.” Then he’d reappear a few hours later for more, stumbling and slurring his words. But what could Alex do? His card ran. Still, Alex was disturbed. He started telling customers the gas wasn’t in stock even when it was. “The fact that I’ve had to say ‘Bro, I think you’re good for the day’ is insane,” he says. “I’m not a bartender. This isn’t something where I’m obligated by law to tell you. But just out of my morals, I don’t want to be the person that sells this guy this tank and he goes and hits it in his car, then kills somebody.”

The moral calculations of smoke-shop employees like Alex are the only limit on customers’ ability to purchase as much nitrous oxide as they want. While it’s illegal to sell nitrous oxide explicitly for recreational use, companies can carry it if they say it’s a food-processing propellant for whipped cream and culinary products. Thanks to this loophole, it can be sold legally over the counter (to those 21 and over, depending on the state), online, and in bulk and delivered by head shops like Cloud 9 as well as large chains like Ace Hardware, Walmart, and Amazon.

In the past few years, as nitrous has grown in popularity, distributors have inundated the market with bigger, brighter, and better-tasting tanks. This marketing has been especially effective among teens, who are already accustomed to inhaling flavored substances. But nitrous is a lot more dangerous than the vapes with which it shares shelf space. Heavy users report seizures, mouth lesions, paralysis, brain damage, psychosis, and spinal-cord degeneration. Pedestrians are being killed by drivers huffing in their cars. Those outcomes haven’t slowed the drug’s rise, and for those who got in on the nitrous market early — like Cloud 9 — the trade has been unfathomably lucrative. Alex didn’t know that his employer wasn’t just selling Galaxy Gas — it created the brand. Nor did he know that eventually, according to a Cloud 9 executive, the company’s output would grow to represent nearly 30 percent of all nitrous sold in the country. “They are gray-market specialists,” says another former employee, Chris. “And they’re capitalizing on people’s inability to legislate as fast as they can make new products.”…

Cloud 9 was opened by Ben Amor in 2011, when he was a business student at Kennesaw State, a large public university near Atlanta. Ben’s family had immigrated from Morocco to the U.S. and opened a handful of businesses near their home in Georgia, including a used-car lot and a hookah lounge. Ben worked at the lounge during college, and when customers started trying to buy the hookahs directly, he decided to open a smoke shop of his own across the street. “It was only 700 square feet, the rent was only $700; there wasn’t much risk,” Ben said in 2019 on a podcast called HSTL UP. Atlanta is a smoker’s paradise — “If you go to the nail salon, you’ll have hookah as an option,” an employee at one of the Amors’ first shops says — and there were soon plenty of customers…

… Using Cloud 9 sales data as market research, the brothers created their own versions of smoke-shop products under the SBK brand, which they sold at Cloud 9. They quickly landed on what Brady describes as the “candy-bar method,” designing disposable vape cartridges in flavors like Pandora Peach and Rocket Rozay. “They weren’t going for, like, a 20-year smoker,” Brady says. “They were going for someone who is young and impressionable.” Nitrous had been sold in the shops in small canisters from brands like Whip-It! But sales had never been huge — “It was solid business, just in the background,” Brady says. “It wasn’t like, Oh, we’re making a ton of money off the stuff all the time.” But in 2020, they noticed their nitrous numbers suddenly started ticking up. The Amors weren’t sure why, but they wanted in. (Cloud 9 and SBK International refused to respond to a comprehensive list of questions, saying in a statement: “These so-called ‘facts’ are, on the whole, false and defamatory at best. We will not dignify them with a direct response.”)…

The Amors didn’t make their own version of the product right away. The gas market in America is controlled by a few major distributors that handle the complicated work of importing gas, often from China. Each distributor has its own small portfolio of brands — United Brands owns Whip-It!, for instance, and Commerce Enterprises owns Miami Magic and InfusionMax…

Alas, the good times couldn’t last forever; eventually big media and local police departments wised up. Being a good Hustle Guy means knowing when to shut down the wagon and skip town…

… CBS produced a segment; USA Today published a story; police departments warned parents about the trend. “Galaxy Gas came out of nowhere and is being mass marketed to black children,” tweeted SZA. In response, the Amors began asking their employees to go on TikTok and send corporate every video featuring Galaxy Gas they could find. Disclaimers began appearing on customers’ receipts. “They filmed a commercial that was playing in-store that showed someone in a chef’s outfit with a Galaxy Gas logo making whipped cream in a kitchen,” says Zack. “That one felt like a giant ‘cover your ass.’” But it was too late. An employee remembers one of the Amors bemoaning his fate on a call with corporate leaders: “I created Galaxy Gas for the people in Phish parking lots, not for the rappers in Atlanta.” The Amors went quiet, deleting their social-media accounts and wiping Galaxy Gas promotional videos from the internet. They got a crisis-PR firm…

But for gas heads, there are plenty of options. A search for “nitrous oxide tank” on Amazon returns dozens of colorful, candy-flavored results: AmazWhip, Exotic Whip, CyberWhip, and RelaxWhip. Websites like nitrousdelivery.com offer late-night delivery in cartons of six and free shipping on orders of $100 or more. Smoke shops in Atlanta are now stocking a Galaxy Gas rip-off called Cosmic Gas; last year, Miami Magic launched a new XL tank, which is almost double Galaxy Gas’s largestsize. It’s currently on back order, a rep told me, “due to high demand.” There are plenty of options for those wanting to sell gas, too. Over the past few weeks, I reached out to nine Chinese gas manufacturers, telling them that I worked for an American smoke-shop chain looking to purchase millions of tanks of nitrous a month to sell specifically for recreational use. All were ready and willing. “No problem,” responded a representative for a company called Langfang Yolo Technology. I followed up to clarify that I’d be selling the tanks for people to get high — that would be fine, right? “Yes, friend.”

DNC Candidate For DNC Candidate Forum at 4pm Eastern (LIVE)

The DNC Candidate For DNC Candidate Forum at 4pm Eastern (LIVE).  Looks like the part with DNC Chair has finally begun!

USA Today in an article about the upcoming DNC elections:

Immediately after losing last fall’s presidential election, Democrats were shredded by critics inside and outside the party for failing to connect with working-class people, triggering a debate among pundits and strategists over who is to blame and how to win back blue-collar voters.

But instead of an ideological grudge match or blame game, the race to replace Jaime Harrison as Democratic National Committee chair is dominated by two Midwestern nice guys looking to leverage their relationships and home state records.

One leading candidate, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler, has been endorsed by advocacy groups from the party’s left flank such as MoveOn and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and also by the centrist Third Way.

Casey Burgat, director of the legislative affairs program at the George Washington University Graduate School of Management, said the DNC leader race thus far reflects a shift toward pragmatism.

“The fact that the DNC race hasn’t devolved into ideological warfare suggests that party leaders are moving beyond the knee-jerk narratives of the post-election weeks and focusing on what they can control: improving the party’s infrastructure, refining its outreach, and crafting a winning strategy for 2026 and beyond,” he said.

More excerpts:

In the shadow of Trump’s return to Washington, Democrats are convening various forums in January to hear from eight candidates who hope to revive the party’s prospects.

It’s a familiar place for liberals, who were exiled from power when the GOP won control of both the presidency and Congress in 2004 and in 2016. What’s different this time, experts say, is Democrats must deal with a fractured media ecosystem, rising disinformation and an electoral realignment that calls for a more nuanced coalition.

Chief among the issues facing the party will be addressing an enthusiasm gap, particularly among younger voters and progressives, which saw the Democratic ticket draw roughly 6.2 million fewer votes compared to 2020.

“A strong chair who can coordinate resources and rally diverse factions of the party could be the difference between a Democratic resurgence and another cycle of missed opportunities,” Burgat said.

Wikler, 43, hasn’t shown his cards in terms of a DNC member vote count, but he has major muscle behind him, such as his close ties with billionaire Reid Hoffman, a LinkedIn co-founder, who has poured millions into the Wisconsin Democratic Party. He also received an endorsement this month from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who is the highest-ranking Democrat to publicly support any contender.

In a statement, Schumer called attention to Wikler receiving support from the “full spectrum” of the party and said Wikler was critical in helping hold a Senate seat and flipped 14 state legislative seats.

“Ben has what Democrats need right now—proven results—and that’s why I’m backing Ben,” Schumer said in a Jan. 2 statement.

Those connections make Wikler a formidable candidate, but those same ties could be a liability if the chair race turns into a clash between establishment and more grassroots leaders, who have longstanding grievances about how the DNC operates and being too close to megadonors.

RV and Camping Culture

My wife and I went to the Sportsmen’s Expo in Denver yesterday, mainly to see a couple of camper manufacturers who were exhibiting there.  The vibe of that show was very kill-y, with lots of safaris to exotic places to trophy hunt, but there were also a lot of vendors selling camping and fishing goods.  There were also dogs and raptors, both very cool.

So you’d assume that a place where a lot of gun-centric activities were happening would be pretty Trumpy, and maybe it was, but it wasn’t much in evidence.  A few “lions not sheep” t-shirts was the extent of it.  That slogan always makes me laugh because those shirts are often stretched to the limit over the pot belly of the out-of-shape “lion” wearing it.

Next door to the Sportsmen’s Expo was a free RV show sponsored by Camping World, which is a terrible company that nobody should ever buy an RV from, but since it was free and close, we decided to have a quick look.  There were a few exhibitors in addition to Camping World, including one woman who had a booth selling blingy Trump hats.  We noped out of there pretty quickly, but I wasn’t surprised to see Trump merch at a RV show.

We’ve been traveling a lot over the past few years, and as we travel, we encounter different groups of folks who like to camp.  There are a lot of different types of travelers, with different styles of campers.  I’d characterize our style as Overlanders: vehicle-based, international, generally “dry camping” (meaning no electric, water or sewer hookups), with a smaller rig (we have a 18′ long van).  On our trips, we’ve encountered a lot of international travelers making their way through Canada, the US and Mexico.  These people generally take longer trips (many weeks or months).  We all use iOverlander to find spots to camp and things to do.

Our camping style and rig overlap a lot with the kinds of people who go to a Sportsman’s show.  But we also see a fair number of what I’d call RVers.  These are people who have a much larger rig, who often camp in a campground with full hookups (water, sewer and electric).  These folks want to carry their living room with them, and are willing to haul around a 30 foot or longer trailer, or drive a big motorhome.

We don’t camp at RV parks very often, but we encounter RVers at state and national parks, and the only place I’ve seen a lot of Trumpy paraphernalia has been in a state park where a lot of RVers gathered.  The rest is just a bumper sticker or MAGA hat or two.

Anyway, the point of all of this is that Trumpers do camp and enjoy the outdoors.  Yet their orange boy gives no shits about the outdoors and public lands.  All he wants to do is drill on it  The red states themselves are oddly variable in their attitude towards financing and expanding their state parks.  We were in Arkansas this year, and their parks were cheap and nice.  Missouri wasn’t bad, either.  Texas, on the other hand, is notorious for having a lot less public land and parks than you’d think for a place that size.

I don’t have a big point to make here, just that I find it interesting that people who want to spend time in the outdoors are all about a clown who would put a fucking oil well in the middle of Yellowstone if he thought he could get away with it, and if one of his rich donors wanted him to.

Two Sides of the Coin on Canada and Mexico

This post is in: Open Threads

First, both countries are sending help for the fires:

Premier David Eby says crews from British Columbia are joining the fight against wildfires spreading in the Los Angeles area in California.

On social media, Eby said the province had received a request from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for a senior management team to join the fight and that “they will be departing imminently.”

“California has been there for us. We will be there for them. That’s what good neighbours do,” Eby wrote in a post on Bluesky and X (formerly Twitter).

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday that Mexico was sending a team of firefighters and military personnel to Los Angeles to support the fight against the devastating fires.

[…] “We’re going to help, not just because the people and government of Mexico have always been generous, but also because there are a lot of Mexicans in this part of the United States,” Sheinbaum said.

The more that we publicize the help we get from our two best allies, the better.

Second, politicians from both countries are treating Trump’s nonsense the way it should be treated.  I wrote about Claudia Sheinbaum’s proposal to turn call part of the US “America Mexicana”.  Brian Beutler found at least one Canadian politician making a similar offer:

In response to Trump’s ongoing campaign to belittle Canada as the 51st state, the leader of the Canadian Green Party, Elizabeth May, suggested a different trade. “I don’t want to belittle Trump,” May said. “But on the other hand, hey Donald, have we got a deal for you. You think we want to be the 51st state? Nah. Maybe California would like to be the 11th province. How about it? California, Oregon, Washington.”

California (39 mil), Oregon (4 mil) and Washington (8 mil) have more citizens than the whole of Canada (40 million).

Anyway, Beutler thinks that we should adopt the approach of Sheinbaum and May:

Liberals today seem more inclined than in 2017-2020 to roll their eyes or mutter at his empty provocations, and move on. This is as much a mental-health exercise as a strategic ploy. It’s arguably a wiser approach to opposition than indiscriminate resistance, though of course it means we’ll err in certain edge cases—over-reacting to some things, under-reacting to others.

But a good way to resolve the debate might be to establish an informal rule: responding to Trump’s provocations is always acceptable if the effect is to belittle him; to make him look like a boob or a chump or a phony. Not “ahhh! this is dangerous!” but “whatever, clown!” Not “what about our norms!” but “try me.” Etc, etc.

Scolding Trump is pointless — he and his supporters just see it as “liberal tears”.  Walz was getting somewhere with “weird” until the Harris campaign consultants decided that kumbaya was a better approach.  That was wrong.  There’s about 30-40% of Trump’s support that is hardcore, the rest are vibers.  Well, the vibes around an old man saying ridiculous shit and getting laughed at by our allies, and by the other party, aren’t great.

Claudia Sheinbaum, who’s shaping up to be a great leader, showed us the way earlier this week, we just need to follow.

Egg prices continue to climb amid the bird flu outbreak https://t.co/eEbLNM1mYF

My personal hobbyhorse… “Egg prices continue to climb amid the bird flu outbreak” [gift link]:

Photos of bare grocery refrigerator cases and tales of egg prices gone wild have been rampant on social media this winter.

The scenes aren’t manufactured drama. The U.S. Department of Agriculture noted last week that some grocery stores have been limiting the number of cartons customers can buy and hanging signs announcing shortages where cartons of eggs would normally be stacked.

The bird flu outbreak behind the shortages began affecting U.S. chickens in 2022, and prices are still rising. Adding to consumers’ woes, experts say that prices now could rise in Michigan and Colorado as the states join others requiring all eggs to come from chickens raised without cages. Here’s how much — and why — you might be shelling out more than ever.

How much are eggs?
Prices differ widely, of course, depending on geographic area and individual retailers. But nationwide, the consumer price index puts the cost at $3.65 for a dozen regular large white eggs in November (the latest available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics)…

Why are they so expensive?
Experts say it’s a classic case of supply and demand. According to the USDA, nearly 40 million commercial egg-laying hens across the country were lost last year to the H5N1 strain of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and fires. The losses were especially high in December, the agency noted, which coincided with the usual peak holiday demand for eggs, leading to “record-high wholesale and retail prices.”

And on the demand side, it’s not just the rise in holiday sales: The volume of eggs sold at retail has been up year over year for 21 consecutive months, according to the American Egg Board, which attributes Americans’ appetite to a number of factors, including the emphasis many people are placing on protein in their diets…

Will they get cheaper?

Don’t expect a price drop anytime soon, experts say. The latest projections from the USDA suggest that egg prices are expected to climb even higher in 2025, given the continued bird flu threat. USDA economist Megan Sweitzer said the agency is predicting another price increase this year, of 11.4, assuming the avian flu remains a problem. “We’re still seeing egg-laying flocks being affected by the avian influenza,” she said in a radio interview posted last month on the USDA’s website…

War for Ukraine Day 1,052: SCHOLZ!!!!

With friends like these, Ukraine doesn’t need enemies.

⚡️Scholz blocks proposal for $3 billion arms package for Ukraine, Spiegel reports.

The initiative reportedly included the provision weapons including three additional Iris-T air defense batteries, 10 howitzers, and more artillery ammunition.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) January 10, 2025 at 8:54 AM

From The Kyiv Independent:

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has blocked a proposal for an additional military aid package for Ukraine worth 3 billion euros ($3.09 billion), Spiegel reported on Jan. 9, citing its undisclosed sources.

Under Scholz’s leadership, Germany has become Ukraine’s second-largest military donor after the U.S. The chancellor has nevertheless often been criticized for his cautious approach on some key issues, such as his refusal to provide Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine.

The new assistance plan, proposed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, was for additional weapons including three additional Iris-T air defense batteries, 10 howitzers, and more artillery ammunition, acording to Spiegel.

But Scholz claimed the existing allocation of 4 billion euros ($4.1 billion) for 2025, as well as funds from the $50 billion G7 loan financed by frozen Russian assets, should be sufficient, Spiegel reported.

Scholz also expressed concern that the new government could take on significant financial obligations after early federal elections in February if the package was allowed to go ahead.

Baerbock and Pistorius justified the need for the package by arguing that the combat situation in Ukraine was worsening, and that there was uncertainty about further U.S. support under Donald Trump’s leadership.

Pistorius and Baerbock hoped to gain parliamentary support for their proposal before the federal elections, and presented their proposal as “a vital signal of Germany’s unwavering support.”

Despite Scholz’s lack of support, Pistorius reiterated Germany’s support during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, also known as Ramstein, on Jan. 9, according to Spiegel.

Pistorius announced the provision of nearly 50 guided missiles for the Iris-T air defense system.

The missiles, originally designed for the Bundeswehr, were redirected directly from production to Ukraine.

President Zelenskyy gave an interview with Italy’s RaiNews24 while in Italy for meetings with President Meloni.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Ukrainian troops are holding defensive lines at the Kurakhove thermal power plant despite fierce fighting in the sector, Khortytsia group of forces spokesperson Viktor Trehubov said on national television on Jan. 10.

“Now the Russians are trying to attack in the area of Dachne, and drive Ukrainian forces out of Kurakhove. Ukrainian forces are holding the thermal power plant and inflicting all the damage they can on the enemy,” Trehubov said.

Kurakhove has become one of the focal points of the Russian offensive in Donetsk Oblast over the past few months, turning the town into one of the hottest sectors of the front.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed on Jan. 6 that its forces had fully captured Kurakhove in, a statement not confirmed at the time by Ukraine.

On Jan. 7, a military spokesperson said Ukrainian forces continue to hold positions in the western outskirts of Kurakhove and the power plant, but the situation in the town is “difficult.”

The town lies over 20 kilometers (over 10 miles) north of Russian-occupied Vuhledar and over 30 kilometers (almost 20 miles) south of the key front-line town of Pokrovsk.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Ukrainian forces struck a Russian army command post in Svitlodarsk in Russian-occupied Donetsk Oblast, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported on Jan. 10.

In a post on Facebook, the military said the “successful hit” targeted Russia’s 3rd Army Corps.

Svitlodarsk is located around 30 kilometers southeast of Bakhmut, and was occupied by Russian forces in May 2022.

The General Staff did not specify what weapon was used in the attack or the extent of the damage inflicted, but said “all necessary measures were taken to limit the risk to civilians.”

Ukraine fields homemade missiles and long-range drones as well as Western-supplied arms like HIMARS, ATACMS, or Storm Shadow missiles.

“This week in the Donetsk region the Armed Forces of Ukraine has conducted a series of strikes on facilities seized by Russian invaders,” the General Staff added.

This is the second such reported strike this week — on Jan. 8 the General Staff said Ukrainian forces carried out a precision strike against a command post of Russia’s 8th Combined Arms Army in Russian-occupied Khartsyzk in Donetsk Oblast.

Similar attacks were also reported in recent days, including a precision strike against a Russian command post in Kursk Oblast on Jan. 7 and another one in the same region on Jan. 2.Earlier on Jan. 8, the Ukrainian military announced a successful long-range attack against a Russian oil depot in Saratov Oblast that provided fuel to the nearby Engels-2 airbase.
