War for Ukraine Day 1,040: A Brief Sunday Afternoon Update

by Adam L Silverman|  December 29, 20241:30 pm| 32 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Quick housekeeping note: As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve got something I have to do this afternoon and evening, so just a quick and somewhat abbreviated update going up early today.

Here’s some updated information on the Russian sabotage of undersea cables:

I think oil tanker EAGLE S damaged at least one more cable yesterday in Gulf of Finland.

Subsea communications cable C-LION1 (Helsinki – Rostock) had an outage yesterday, reported at 16:50Z.

16:42Z cable saboteur suspect EAGLE S passed this cable.

EAGLE S is arrested by Finnish Coast Guard.

Besides the likely damaged electricity cable Estlink2 and now C-LION1, this ship passed numerous other cables and pipes and I have expected more issues.

Thanks @akihheikkinen.bsky.social for finding this.

I am told in private that there are two more Gulf of Finland communication cables cut. Connecting Tallin and Helsinki. I have not been able to verify it yet. Happy for help in that matter!

As you can see from this (schematic!) map there are plenty of options.

— auonsson (@auonsson.bsky.social) December 26, 2024 at 4:18 AM

This is the impact on electricity:

600 MW of import from FI via Estlink 2 is eliminated. Estlink 1 is running at the limit with 350 MW. Forwarding to Latvia is stopped completely.

Exports to Russia are reversed, and as a result 200 MW are imported from Russia.

Since autumn 2023 11 cables and pipes have been damaged by ships dragging their anchors in Baltic Sea.

Trust @garygnutter.bsky.social for details!

Not in list: the attempt by Yi Peng 3 to rip the electrical cables to Læsø, Denmark.

The legitimate President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili has just stated that she carries public legitimacy within herself and that the building (the residence) that she had previously chosen to begin with is of no importance.
She pointed out several priorities: 1/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 2:52 AM

She will work on the meticulous details of how the new elections must be held so that the Georgians are never tricked again. Secrecy of vote as well as its universality must be ensured (which means full inclusion of voters abroad). 2/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 2:52 AM

She will work with every stakeholder regarding this issue, and called for all who would like to be on the country’s political scene, such as the old but also the new emerging forces in the process, to be ready for the new elections that will “come very soon.” 3/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 2:52 AM

She calls for strengthening the independent media through every means; to strengthen foundations that aid those affected, from prisoners to repressed public sector workers; for lawyers to be ready to defend people. 4/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 2:52 AM

The President will hold meetings with the 🇬🇪 public in the regions, be in close touch with the business that has realized what’s at stake and has expressed dissent towards authorities, unlike the typical conformism in a country like 🇬🇪. 5/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 2:52 AM

She will also continue representing 🇬🇪 abroad, and underlined that she already has several high-profile visit invitations.
She stated there is no New Year’s or any holiday in this struggle in this “total crisis,” (politics, economics…) and that we shall meet the New Year’s together on Rustaveli. 6/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 2:52 AM

Please note that this is the content of her speech, I might have missed a point, and it cannot be quoted as her precise words. 7/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 2:52 AM

This marks a new chapter in our resistance – a President of the people, full public resources consolidated and directed into making the regime collapse, since we believe it is still possible through the mix of internal and external pressure. 8/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 2:52 AM

What we need: non-recognition of the regime, no shaking hands with them, continued recognition of President Zourabichvili, and sanctions.

What’s next for Georgia:

This is a process of attrition. We are focused on the regime collapse. For society to switch to the mode of toppling, they need to see that the collapse is not possible. However, it could very much be possible. 1/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 4:52 AM

How do we collapse the regime?
At home: we need to persist, hopefully continued with an even deeper dissent of the business sector. 2/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 4:52 AM

Abroad: non-recognition of the regime and not shaking hands with them in any way is the standard to not betray Georgians. Pressure for new elections, sanctions, and recognition of the continued legitimacy of President Zourabichvili is how friends and partners can actually take steps to aid us. 3/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 4:52 AM

For information’s sake, the population at large does not care about the presidential residence since it’s not an established building like the White House, and “average people” felt like it’s unnecessary to make a battlefield there. 4/

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 4:52 AM

So, no one should take the relocation of her residence as a step back or a failure of some sort. An additional step at increasing the temperature was not taken, but the existing temperature is absolutely unharmed.

Back to Ukraine.

⚡️ Russia attacked Ukraine with over 280 bombs, 370 drones, 80 missiles this week, Zelensky says.

Russia has escalated its aerial assault on Ukraine, launching more than 280 KAB guided bombs, nearly 370 attack drones, and over 80 missiles in the past week, President Zelensky said on Dec. 29.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) December 29, 2024 at 7:37 AM

The Kyiv Independent has the details:

Russia has escalated its aerial assault on Ukraine, launching more than 280 KAB guided bombs, nearly 370 attack drones, and over 80 missiles in the past week, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Dec. 29.

“Our cities and communities are under constant Russian attacks. Even on Christmas night, Russia organized a massive air attack,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram, sharing footage of the destruction across Ukraine.

On Dec. 25, Russia conducted a large-scale attack, firing 78 missiles and 106 drones against multiple cities. Kharkiv came under “massive fire” from ballistic missiles, resulting in one death and six injuries.

During the same attack, a Russian missile entered Moldovan airspace, Moldovan President Maia Sandu confirmed.

Unverified reports claimed another missile entered Romanian airspace, though Romania’s Defense Ministry denied any violation. Poland scrambled fighter jets in response to the missile threat in western Ukraine, according to the Polish Operational Command.

“I am grateful to the defenders who save our people from daily attacks and to the partners who understand the importance of timely air defense to protect lives and bring a just and fair peace,” Zelensky said.

The president underscored the need for collective action, saying, “Such terror can only be stopped with joint efforts.”

Ukraine develops low-cost cruise missile able to hit Moscow.
Uncertain over future Western support, Ukraine is very rapidly developing its own missile arsenal. Kyiv’s allies will soon no longer have a veto on Ukrainian strikes on military targets deep in Russia.

Machine translated from Radio Svoboda:

Ukraine has developed an inexpensive cruise missile «Trembling», an improved version of which can reach Moscow, reportI used to British magazine The Economist, whose correspondent visited the test launches of the rocket near Kyiv. Informs about it «Voice of America».

One of the advantages of new weapons, missiles «Trembits», named after the Ukrainian folk musical instrument used by shepherds in the Carpathians, is the ability to fly at low altitudes, which can allow it to avoid missile defense, Ukrainian military engineers explain in the article. It is also ten times cheaper than Russian and Western missiles.

According to The Economist, the engine «Trembits», whose installation really resembles a thin and long musical instrument, – is a $ 200 remake of the Pulsejet jet engine, which was first used on the German Fau-1 bomb in 1944.

Base «Trembita» flies at a speed of 400 km/years with a range of 200 km, writes The Economist, but to achieve Moscow, a larger and more powerful model is being developed. It is planned that after the final field tests «Trembit» will go into series production.

«Trembita», also called «volatile bomb», was first introduced in July 2023 in a video report by France 24 news channel.

Despite the fact that the rocket is designed by volunteer engineers, it took them only a year and a half to go from the drawing board to the battlefield. According to the magazine, this is – «feat» in an area where this process usually takes many years.

As it adds edition of Army Recognition, which wrote about «Trembit» back in June, the cost of the rocket itself is about 3 thousand dollars, another 7 thousand – high-tech guidance system. But this price is only a small fraction compared to Russian winged and supersonic missiles, such as «Dagger », or «Caliber », which cost between one and two million dollars.

According to The Economist, Ukraine needs its own missiles, because uncertainty prevails over how long Western countries will be ready to supply its weapons.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Four facilities housing telecommunication equipment for the illegal operator Phoenix, used by Russian forces, were destroyed in the occupied part of Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) said on Dec. 29.

Without explicitly claiming responsibility, the agency said that “disruptions to the Russian military‘s logistics and communications are an important continuous process.”

The Phoenix is a telecommunications operator active in the Russian-occupied part of Donetsk Oblast since 2015.

HUR further reported fires that melted cellular equipment in Russia’s Leningrad Oblast and destroyed three railway relay cabinets in Yaroslavl Oblast.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify these claims.

Sabotage operations targeting Russian railways and other parts of infrastructure have been reported throughout the full-scale war.

The Atesh partisan group reported burning down a relay cabinet near the village of Chekhov in Moscow Oblast in early December, disrupting Russian supply lines

These coordinated attacks highlight Ukraine’s strategy to weaken Russian operational and logistical capabilities as the war continues.

Inflation by Race and Location

by @heymistermix.com|  December 29, 202412:54 pm| 58 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

The Minneapolis Federal Reserve has a paper on inflation where the author gathers stats by race and location, among other indicators.  Starting with race:

Inflation by Race and Location

In a recent interview, New York Fed economist Rajashri Chakrabarti told me the transportation component of the basket was a significant factor that drove inflation for Hispanic households more than 1.5 percentage points above average. As vehicle and gas prices normalized, housing inflation became the more important factor, with a disproportionate effect on Asian households. But by mid-2023, the differences by race were again small.

The New York Fed also deflates each group’s weekly earnings by its respective inflation rate. This shows that after all the fluctuations in recent years, earnings adjusted for inflation have taken a slight step backward from pre-pandemic across the board (Figure 6). And there has been little change in the relative inequality across the groups.

Here’s one on rural vs urban:
Inflation by Race and Location 1
The author notes that rural residents drive 76% more than urban residents, which might contribute to that jump.
Obviously, lots of factors in the loss of rural and hispanic votes, but this is one interesting factor.  And I think this audience knows that even if inflation went down, the prices stayed up, and continued to rankle since income did not keep pace with inflation.

I don’t post about international affairs much — that’s Adam’s thing and the only politics I know anything about is in North America.  But, as is our ritual over the holidays, I watched the nightly news with my old man last night, and this story is just pure horror:

One of northern Gaza’s last functioning hospitals, Kamal Adwan in Beit Lahia, is “suffering from a stifling siege,” Gaza’s Health Ministry said Friday after Israeli forces stormed inside and “forcibly” removed health workers, patients and family members, as military vehicles surrounded the hospital.

“The operating and surgical departments, laboratory, maintenance, and emergency units have been completely burned, and the fire is now spreading to the buildings,” the ministry’s statement said.

This is from NBC News and it ran in last night’s prime-time newscast.  One of the most gut-wrenching parts of the video was watching the hospital administrator, who had been interviewed multiple times by NBC (they said) being dragged out and labeled as a Hamas collaborator.  He looked just broken.

Again, I’m not an expert in the Gaza conflict, but I am a human being with two eyes and two ears, and this whole fucking episode has been nothing but poison for our side, who we like to think are the “good guys”.  The regular reports of Biden being big mad at Bibi Netanyahu, while doing essentially nothing about Bibi’s obvious prolongation of this conflict to stave off the reckoning for his corruption, was at least a factor in our loss this cycle, and certainly promoted the narrative of Biden being old and out of touch.

It doesn’t fucking matter that Trump will be worse, which he certainly will be.  From the perspective of consequences for innocents in Gaza, how much worse can it get than burning down one of the last functioning hospitals, which is happening prior to Trump taking office?

It does matter that Hamas killed 1,200 in October, 2023.  Does that justify burning down a hospital in December, 2024, and if it does, why?   Does it justify killing 45,000 Palestinians, as well as hundreds of journalists and aid workers?

The moral ugliness of financing the army that burns down hospitals and murders civilians was a factor in the election, and we need to get this one right next time.  I don’t know, exactly, what “right” is, but I know what it isn’t. I saw it on TV last night.

He’s a Doddering Old Liar – Repeat It

by @heymistermix.com|  December 29, 202411:03 am| 68 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I’m going to start with some words of wisdom from Frank Luntz:

You say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and then again and again and again and again, and about the time that you’re absolutely sick of saying it is about the time that your target audience has heard it for the first time.

Or, perhaps the immortal words of the White Stripes are more to your liking: “Well, I’ve said it once before, and it bears repeating.”

Trump makes a lot of noise.  That noise is designed to distract from some embarrassing truths about the guy:

  •  He lies to his base all the time.  He lied about immigration — he likes visa programs for him and his rich friends.  He lied about bringing down the price of groceries — now he says it would be “very hard” which means it won’t happen.
  • Trump has lost the juice:  he’s old and weak.  He lets Elon Musk call the shots while he’s out golfing at Mar-a-Lago.  No wonder everyone is calling Elon “President Musk.”
  • Trump’s brain is shot.  He thinks the short-term visas he gets so he can underpay his immigrant cleaners at Mar-a-Lago are the same as the long-term ones they give to tech workers in Silicon Valley, probably because President Musk told him so.

Is this simplistic?  God, I hope so, and if it isn’t, we need to dumb it down further.  Whenever some reporter shoves a microphone in front of a Democrat and asks about Trump’s latest stupid remarks, calling them “stupid” and pointing out that they’re either a lie, a sign of weakness, or a sign of him losing the plot is, as far as I’m concerned, the way to go.

We chose life in a swampy wilderness so we could observe the waterfowl, otters, gators and other critters, but we also enjoy watching football, especially this time of year. A screen-within-screen approach yields the best of both worlds.

Photo of view from a porch with an iPad displaying football game propped on a porch screen crossbar.

Photo is from Friday, as eagle-eyed readers who know their bowl game schedule may deduce. (Go ‘Dores!) But we’ve got the same set-up on tap all weekend.

Did a deep house cleaning yesterday (by my standards; I suspect Mr. Cole’s are far more rigorous). It was exhausting since I had really let the place go and didn’t have holiday guests to motivate me earlier.

I despise cleaning, but the results sure are satisfying. At least until the dogs track mud through the house again.

We’re supposed to get lots of rain soon — the same front that menaced valued commenter Nukular Biskits overnight (hope you’re okay, pal!) appears to be barreling toward us.

The local frogs are now confirming human/AI weather predictions by elaborate trilling, so I believe it.

Speaking of goddamn fucking AI, which I am beginning to suspect is the fucking devil sent to torment us in the guise of a “helpful” tool, I think Apple’s latest “upgrade” is responsible for doubling my text error rate with bullshit “corrections” that render snippets of prose incoherent.

I could turn it off — it may come to that! But it does save time when it works correctly. The problem is it’s aggressively wresting control to make matters worse.

God help you if you fat-finger a space instead of a letter in the middle of a word. Then it just flat makes up the dumbest shit to fill in the blank. Feh!

***

Do any of y’all have a portable induction cooktop? I’m considering one since I hate the fucking cooktop on our current (and likely last) stove.

The oven is fine, and the cooktop works well enough for boiling water and simple stuff like that, but it sucks for any type of cooking that requires precise temperature control or finesse. I’ve had it with split sauces, scorched fish fillets, etc.

If you have a portable cooktop, I’d be grateful for any insights and/or recs/warnings you could share.

Other than that, open thread!

War for Ukraine Day 1,039: Relationships Matter, Personalities Matter, & Personnel Is Policy

by Adam L Silverman|  December 28, 20247:39 pm| 12 Comments

A quick housekeeping note: I have something I have to do tomorrow afternoon and evening. So, tomorrow’s update is going to be abbreviated and go up around 2:00 PM EST. Thank you all in advance for your understanding of this matter.

Also, I hope this update finds you well…

What?

The Kyiv Independent is reporting that President Zelenskyy is going to make some personnel  changes.

⚡️Zelensky teases multiple ‘important personnel decisions’ coming soon.

“We are preparing several important personnel decisions,” Zelensky said via his official Telegram channel the evening of Dec. 28. “The decrees will be announced soon.”

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) December 28, 2024 at 12:59 PM

Here are the details:

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Dec. 28 that his team is “preparing several important personnel decisions” that will be “announced soon.”

Zelensky’s comments followed meetings with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.

“We are preparing several important personnel decisions,” Zelensky said via his official Telegram channel the evening of Dec. 28.

“The decrees will be announced soon.”

Zelensky did not provide any further details on what departments or officials would be affected by the new decisions.

Earlier this year, Zelensky launched a major government reshuffle, replacing key ministers and appointing a number of new advisors and deputies.

In February 2024, Zelensky also replaced Ukraine’s top military leadership, dismissing former Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi and appointing Oleksandr Syrskyi in his place.

Ukrainian media outlets reported in fall 2024 that Zelensky was considering dismissing Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Military Intelligence Chief Kyrylo Budanov. The president has denied those reports.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

European Rules Must Prevail over Any Individual’s Ties with Moscow – Address by the President

28 December 2024 – 18:13

Dear Ukrainians!

Today, I spoke with the President of Azerbaijan. I expressed my condolences to the President and the people of Azerbaijan.

I have no doubt that the full truth about the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane can be established and that Russia will not succeed in concealing anything. Now there are already partners involved, who can be trusted, first of all, by Azerbaijan itself.

Ukraine will provide all the necessary assistance, and we call on every country to support Azerbaijan in this situation. And we call on every country to put pressure on Russia to stop the lies about this crash – the same lies as were told about MH-17, about the Boeing shot down over the Donetsk region.

In our conversation with President Aliyev, we acknowledged the heroism of the crew, who managed to steer the plane onto Kazakhstan territory, saving 29 people. But tragically, there were many fatalities, and for all this, the accountability must be borne – the accountability of those who hit the plane, and those in Russia who made all this possible: that the plane was targeted.

Today I received an intelligence report on what happened and the data we currently have. I instructed that all facts be shared with our partners.

In the coming days, we will continue our communication with the leaders – although the New Year is approaching, our work does not stop. We already have a preliminary schedule of our diplomatic engagements for January, including with our American partners.

Today, I also spoke with Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and had a discussion with Minister of Energy German Galushchenko. I heard the details of electricity imports from the European Union to Ukraine via Slovakia – about 19 percent. This is of the total volume. We are working with other neighbors in the EU.

And I have instructed our Government officials to do everything possible, together with the European Commission, together with all our partners in Europe, everything possible to maintain the stability of the united European energy system and uphold European energy rules. Whatever Putin may have told Fico during his visit to the Kremlin, European rules must prevail over any individual’s ties with Moscow.

And one more thing. We are preparing several important personnel decisions. The decrees will be announced soon. I want to thank everyone who helps!

Glory to Ukraine!

The US:

⚡️US to send $1.25 billion in military aid to Ukraine, AP reports.

The upcoming aid package is expected to include a substantial supply of air defense munitions, along with Stinger missiles and artillery rounds, according to U.S. officials.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) December 27, 2024 at 10:30 PM

Here are the details from The Kyiv Independent:

The U.S. is planning to send $1.25 billion in military aid to Ukraine, the Associated Press (AP) reported on Dec. 27, citing unnamed U.S. officials.

The announcement is expected to come on Dec. 30, officials said.

The outgoing White House administration has ramped up materiel shipments to Ukraine in the weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Previously, the U.S. announced $500 million in military aid for Ukraine on Dec. 12.

The upcoming aid package is expected to include a substantial supply of munitions, officials told AP. This includes munitions for crucial air defense systems, such as the Hawk air defense system and the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS).

Stinger missiles and artillery rounds (105- and 155-mm) will also likely be provided, U.S. officials said.

The promised air defense delivery comes as Ukraine faces intensifying Russian aerial attacks  targeting critical energy infrastructure. Russia directed a mass missile and drone strike against Ukraine’s power grid on Christmas morning, leading U.S. President Joe Biden to promise a “surge” of weapons deliveries to Kyiv in response.

Ukraine on Dec. 3 asked NATO countries for at least 20 air defense systems to repel Russian attacks.

The situation on the ground is also “challenging” and “trending towards escalation,” Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Nov. 9. Russia has been making  a series of territorial gains in eastern Ukraine, advancing in Donetsk Oblast and now attempting to shift its offensive into the south.

⚡️Pro-Russian hackers launch cyberattack against Italy’s Foreign Ministry, Milan airports.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Hackers targeted the websites of the Italian Foreign Ministry and two airports in Milan on Dec. 28, Italy’s cybersecurity agency (ACN) announced.

The pro-Russian hacker group NoName057(16) claimed responsibility for the attacks on their Telegram channel.

Starting from 8 a.m. local time on Dec. 28, denial of service (DDoS) attacks disrupted the foreign ministry website and the sites of the Milan-Malpensa and Milan-Linate airports, ACN reported.  The websites had to shut down temporarily amid the attacks.

The disruptions did not affect any flights, the agency said.

The cyberattacks against the airports “affected only the sites available to users, not the systems that regulate the flow of flights or even the apps or websites of the individual flight companies,” according to ACN.

DDoS attacks direct excessive amounts of traffic at a website in order to overload its servers, often causing disruptions to service.

“Russophobes get a well-deserved cyber response,” the hacker group NoName057(16) said in a Telegram post claiming responsibility for the attacks.

The Kyiv Independent could not confirm these claims.

Pro-Russian hackers have attacked multiple targets throughout Europe since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, ACN said. Thse groups aim to “challenge  Western countries’ support for Ukraine.”

Italy on Dec. 24 approved a decree extending military support to Ukraine through 2025. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who took office in late 2022, has consistently supported Kyiv and pledged unwavering assistance until the war ends.

Finally, someone, belatedly, asks the right question:

Question: should individual NATO allies decide that Russia’s hybrid campaign merits a response broadly in the same currency – setting aside if that’s prudent or not – what are the Russian targets that are vulnerable and could be disrupted in similarly limited fashion?

One part of the answer is to give Ukraine everything it needs to do what it has told the US, the EU, the EU member states, and NATO repeatedly: we will do the job for you, just resource us. The other part is to actually recognize that we’re in a world war and act accordingly.

Back to Ukraine.

⚡️Ukrainian drones made up over 96% of UAVs military used in 2024, defense minister says.

The domestic drone industry “reached unprecedented production volumes” in 2024, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said on Dec. 28.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) December 28, 2024 at 4:50 PM

Here are the details from The Kyiv Independent:

Ukrainian drones accounted for over 96% of all unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used by the military in 2024, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said on Dec. 28.

Kyiv has ramped up domestic drone production over the past year. Various aerial, naval, and ground drones have been developed and often successfully used for reconnaissance, combat, and other tasks throughout the full-scale with Russia.

The drone industry “reached unprecedented production volumes” in 2024, Umerov said in a Facebook post. Domestically produced drones accounted for 96.2% of all UAVs used by Ukrainian forces this year.

Ukraine manufactured over 1.5 million first-person-view (FPV) drones in 2024, Umerov said.

Ukrainian enterprises also produced reconnaissance drones, kamikaze aircraft, copter-bombers, and long-range drones, he added.

“Such figures indicate a new level of efficiency in the interaction between the state and Ukrainian UAV manufacturers,” Umerov said.

President Volodoymyr Zelensky said in December 2023 that Ukraine aimed to produce one million drones in the coming year. In April 2024, Kyiv launched the Brave1 government initiative to invest in defense tech innovations.

Ukraine in recent months has championed the development of long-range “missile-drones,” upgraded UAVs with turbojet engines that can act as alternatives to cruise missiles. Kyiv unveiled its Palianytsia and Peklo hybrids in the second half of 2024.

Zelensky has said Ukraine aims to produce at least 30,000 long-range drones next year.

My parochial school nuns were not in favor of obfuscation, quoting Scripture: But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. They argued that unnecessary verbal flourishes disguised bad arguments, not only from the hearers but from the teller. Given the penchant of the incoming maladministration, it’s gonna be a long four years…

He said similar stuff on the stump during the campaign. You’ll note he still seems to have very little familiarity with what the concept *is*. He’s gonna sign executive orders, sure, but he clearly doesn’t actually know what they’re going to say or what the issue is

I would also just throw out, because I actually do try to pay pretty close attention to what Trump is saying on trans issues, that I went to Aaron’s feed and this is one of a dozen or so clips from this speech where he is literally doing the laundry list of conservative complaints/promises

So I’m not telling anyone worry or don’t worry, but what I am telling you is what he said here is nothing new vs. the campaign trail, and by all appearances this speech was him running through basically what he said at his rallies during the campaign (which I did watch)

— ellie lockhart (she/they) (@eleanor.lockhart.contact) December 22, 2024 at 3:10 PM

I'll simplify even more. If Trump sounds like he's reading from the teleprompter and detached – like he does here – you can assume it isn't his priority, it's something he's been told is important to say. If he rants on Twitter, it's what he really thinks and will personally try to do.

— Third Thoughts 🏳️‍🌈 (@thirdthoughts.bsky.social) December 22, 2024 at 8:48 PM

The other alternative is that he really is just deciding to be Musk’s puppet, which is not great for similar but not identical reasons.
