War for Ukraine Day 864: Russia Sends the Shaheds Against Sumy Oblast

A painting by Ukrainian artist NEIVANMADE. The words "NEVER AGAIN" are repeated over and over, from left to right and top to bottom, in a faded, washed out black against a white background. Red, the color of blood, runs and drips down across 2/3rds of the painting. "WHILE YOU TOLERATE TYRANTS" is written/painted in the bottom white corner below the three rows of "NEVER AGAIN".

Last night Russia launched a drone attack against Sumy Oblast, as well as other parts of Ukraine.

After Russian attack with Shahed drones, Sumy lost electricity and water supply. While some power has been restored, 100,000 households still remain without power. With disruptions of pumping and draining systems, we could be looking at a major humanitarian disaster. pic.twitter.com/kjCsPQwxCl

⚡️Russian drones damage energy infrastructure in Sumy Oblast.

The Kyiv Independent has the details.

Editor’s Note: This is a developing story and is being updated.

A Russian drone attack overnight on July 6 caused damage to energy infrastructure in Sumy Oblast, leaving several communities in the region without power, the Sumy Oblast Military Administration reported.

In recent months, Russia has intensified its attacks against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure in a renewed assault against the country’s energy grid.

Explosions were heard in Sumy Oblast shortly after midnight local time, Suspilne reported, as the Air Force warned of the threat of Russian Shahed-type drone attacks.

Emergency crews are currently on scene and are investigating the extent of the damage, the military administration said.

Earlier in the night, local officials in the city of Sumy said that a Russian drone attack temporarily cut off power to the local water system and disrupted the water supply. Water usage was restored by 7:30 a.m. local time, Suspilne Sumy reported.

As a result of the attacks on energy infrastructure, Ukraine began implementing rolling blackouts on May 15.

Due to dwindling energy supplies caused by Russian attacks, Ukraine’s largest privately-owned energy provider DTEK has warned that Ukrainians have only have electricity for 6-7 hours per day in the upcoming winter.

In a “worst-case” scenario in which Ukraine is unable to repair damaged energy facilities and prevent future attacks, Ukrainians could experience up to 20 hours of blackouts a day, DTEK Executive Director Dmytro Sakharuk told the Kyiv Independent in an interview on June 9.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

We Are Working on a New Strategy for Our State at Sea, It Will Soon Be Approved by the National Security and Defense Council – Address by the President of Ukraine

6 July 2024 – 19:28

Dear Ukrainians!

Briefly about this day and week.

First, I am grateful to all the warriors who enable the strikes of our Ukrainian drones. The Russian state must feel the response to its actions against our state and people, and this response to them is now evident. Ukrainian drones are already a global brand.

Second, we are working on a new strategy for our state at sea – the Ukrainian Maritime Strategy. This strategy will soon be approved by the National Security and Defense Council – its points are being finalized now. We understand clearly that the war has altered the power dynamics across our entire Black Sea region, and that the Russian fleet will never dominate these waters again. We are securing our interests, taking into account Ukraine’s new technological capabilities and our new relations with partners. From now on, Ukraine will always stand as a nation capable of defending its own maritime interests, transportation arteries, and the interests of our allies and partners. I am grateful to all our people who make this possible. The Ukrainian Navy, all defense and security agencies involved, and the defense industry – public and private companies working for Ukrainian strength.

Third, international communication. This week we have already significantly bolstered our air defense capabilities, and next week will be the time to continue such steps. Every day, together with our team, we meticulously work with partners on pertinent agreements – both within the Air Defense and F16 Coalitions, and on a bilateral basis – in particular, with America. We are preparing the result that Ukraine and our joint security with partners need.

And one more thing. Unfortunately, a terrible accident occurred today in the Rivne region near the village of Verkhiv. A truck collided with a minibus, carrying many people. As of now, fourteen people, including a child, are reported dead. My condolences to all the families and friends. All the circumstances are being investigated – how and why this happened. All the necessary services are there, on the site. As soon as more details emerge, law enforcement and regional authorities will provide further updates to the media.

Glory to Ukraine!

France:

French far-right politician Marine Le Pen said in an interview with CNN on July 5 that her party is against continuing to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles and the possibility of sending French troops to Ukraine.

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) July 6, 2024

From The Kyiv Independent:

French far-right politician Marine Le Pen said in an interview with CNN on July 5 that her party is against continuing to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles and the possibility of sending French troops to Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron has long supported providing Ukraine with long-range missiles, and France already supplies Ukraine with long-range SCALP missiles, the equivalent of the British Storm Shadows.

Macron said in May that he would not rule out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine. Kyiv has not appealed to the West to send its troops to Ukraine, instead asking for increased arms supplies to help its soldiers fend off Russia.

After months of discussion, Macron said on June 7 that France was finalizing a coalition of countries to send military instructors to Ukraine.

Le Pen spoke with CNN ahead of France’s second round of elections on July 7. Le Pen’s party, National Rally, emerged as the most popular party in the first round on June 30.

Prior to February 2022, Le Pen openly expressed her admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and said she did not believe Russia’s annexation of Crimea was illegal.

Le Pen told CNN she recognized that Russia has violated Ukraine’s territorial integrity and “we have condemned Russia in this matter,” but claimed that Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 was “more complicated than it is made out to be.”

“We have two red lines, sending French troops to Ukrainian territory…and the delivery of long-range weapons that could hit Russia, and therefore make France a co-beligerent in this conflict,” Le Pen said.

Le Pen is the president of the National Rally grouping in the French Parliament, but the leader of the party is Jordan Bardella, a 28-year-old member of the European Parliament.

Bardella said on June 19 that he would continue supporting Ukraine if elected prime minister, but also ruled out sending French troops or supplying the country with long-range weapons.

Ukraine’s partners are divided on to what extent Kyiv should be allowed to use Western-supplied weapons to carry out strikes on military targets in Russia.

The U.S. gave Ukraine permission on June 1 to use American-supplied weapons, including HIMARS rockets, to strike targets in Russia located near the border with Kharkiv Oblast after Russia launched a renewed offensive in the region on May 10.

Ukraine is still prohibited from using ATACMS and other long-range U.S.-supplied weapons for strikes deeper inside Russia.

No, Marine Le Pen didn’t just say she would forbid the Ukrainian use of French-made weapons on Russian military targets in Russian territory if her party wins elections.

What she really says by saying this is that she will go on populistically impeding the defense effort of a country under attack that stands between the militaristic expansionist Russia and the rest of Europe in the largest European war of aggression since WWII — and if this country falls particularly as a result of Le Pen’s obstruction, the French people and the French military will have to do deal with the militaristic expansionist Russia by themselves — but Le Pen and her little proud party will not be there with France to face the consequences, that’s it.

That’s your daily translation from pro-Kremlin bullshit into the human language.

Also, I love this brilliantly shameless weaseling out from reality — it’s been months since a dozen nations, even the United States, directly authorized Ukraine to use their weapons against Russian territory after years of irrational fears of “escalation” – and guess what, last time I checked, the sky did not fall on the earth because of that.

But when it comes to France’s contribution to helping Ukraine save itself and stop Russia, it’s suddenly again “a red line” and France “becoming a fighting side in the war” in Le Pen’s world.

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) July 6, 2024

The Kyiv Independent has the details.

Russian forces hit mock-ups of warplanes and Patriot air defense launchers during recent missile attacks that Russian sources claimed had destroyed a Mig-29 aircraft and two Patriot batteries, Ukraine’s Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said on July 6.

The statement follows the publication of videos filmed by Russian reconnaissance drones showing missile strikes on the Dovhyntseve airfield in Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, and a base of Patriot air defense systems near Yuzhne in Odesa Oblast.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that a Ukrainian Mig-29 fighter jet was destroyed as a result of Iskander missiles hitting the Dovhyntseve airfield on July 3.

Russian pro-war Telegram channels published a video showing another Iskander strike near Yuzhne on July 6, claiming that two Patriot batteries and a Giraffe radar system were destroyed. The Russian Defense Ministry has not reported on the attack.

Oleshchuk reshared the footage on his Telegram channel, saying that Ukraine’s Air Force personnel “successfully conducted passive defense measures.”

“Thanks to everyone who helps with quality mock-ups of aircraft and air defense systems. The enemy has fewer Iskanders, and more mock-ups will arrive,” he added.

“Of course, both we and the enemy have losses of equipment and people. But neither side is talking about it publicly. It is clear why!”

The Kyiv Independent is unable to verify the claims immediately.

Ukraine’s airfields have recently faced an uptick in Russian strikes as Kyiv gets ready to receive the first batch of Western F-16 fighter jets.

Over the past week, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have destroyed five Su-27 Soviet-made jets and damaged two more stationed at the Myrhorod airfield, a Mi-24 helicopter at the Poltava airfield.

Reports of the attacks drew outrage on social media, with some criticizing theAir Force for failing to properly protect the airfields despite advance warnings and the expected arrival of F-16 fighter jets.

Air Force spokesperson Illia Yevlash refused to give any comments to the Kyiv Independent on reported Russian attacks against Ukrainian airfields.

On Friday, July 5, it became known that Vladimir Kara-Murza was moved from the IK-6 corrective colony in Omsk to the regional hospital №11 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Omsk region, due to a sharp deterioration in his health. His lawyers were not allowed to visit him. Vladimir Kara-Murza is an absolutely decent and intelligent person, which means that he is alien to modern Russia and Putin. I have repeatedly heard that Putin will kill Kara-Murza. And now he is being killed.

Evgenia Kara-Murza, Vladimir’s wife, recalls that he suffers from polyneuropathy, a disease caused by two severe poisonings committed by Russian special services, which is on the list of diseases that prevent him from serving his sentence.

Vladimir Kara-Murza, previously recognized as a “foreign agent” by the Russian authorities, has been in custody since April 2022 – he was arrested for spreading “fakes” about the Russian army after he condemned the war unleashed by Russia while in the United States. So, he was persecuted for telling the truth. In July 2022, a case was initiated against him for participating in the activities of an “undesirable organization.”

On April 17, 2023, the Moscow City Court sentenced opposition politician and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in a maximum security penal colony. This was the punishment requested by the prosecutor. The verdict was handed down by Judge Sergei Podoprigorov (who is on the Magnitsky list, which was created thanks to Kara-Murza’s efforts). The hearings in the Moscow City Court were closed due to the conclusion that the case was a “state secret.”

The Russian authorities consistently fight and destroy all those who tell the truth and pose a threat to Russia.

If you can, spare a good thought for Vladimir Kara-Murza and his family.

That’s enough for tonight.

This post is in: Open Threads

Two quick things for this open thread.

First.  Biden cancels his speech (scheduled for Sunday) because there is a strike, with picket lines, and we all know that Joe Biden will not be crossing a picket line. h/t Chris Johnson

You know what the media will say, you know what social media trolls will say; now you know what the real deal is in advance.  Forewarned is forearmed.

Second.   An interesting take on troll behavior, from Chris Johnson the comments.  I’ll be interested in hearing your thoughts on these thoughts!

I coin the term ‘Trollster’, check it out :)

You can (and we did!) get pairs of trolls with the following characteristics:

  • Instead of trying to persuade, they’re hammering narratives very unappealingly. It’s brazen, annoying.
  • The narratives may have a common factor (Biden bad) but will outline OPPOSITE positions. Trump stronk/weak,  Kamala Prez/dumped, like that.
  • The trolls WILL NOT intersect. Strictly one thread for the one, one thread for the other. If invited they will not intersect, though they seemingly have opposite takes.
  • If discovered they can retreat or one will drop out so the other can troll normally.

The purpose of Trollstering is to get information back about the subjects that have opposite takes. They, or somebody, is taking note of how they’re argued against and what sticks. The reason they will not intersect even when invited, is because it’s actively a rule for them not to do, and the reason for that is it’d ruin the data! They can’t argue with each other, they’re strictly gathering data on YOU. I would bet money there’s an actual rule against them posting in each others’ threads.

So, if the trollage seems unusually obnoxious and it really seems to be picking fights, check to see if you’re being Trollstered. Is there a nearby thread with a whole other troll, who is being just as obnoxious but over literally opposite points?

Getting normally trolled requires getting some sympathy, but getting Trollstered can be way more adversarial, because you’re being watched on how you respond to the side-issues. They’ll be incredibly on-message, but there’ll be another one where the message has a contradictory aspect. It’s a poll

Here’s the usefulness: it’s a window into what narrative might get pushed next, and it reveals weakness. If the narrative is going perfect they don’t need to do this.

If anyone has questions about how the pie filter works, we have answers.  Just ask!

What else you got going on between now and November?
Surely nothing more important than this.

In the words of Tony Jay

The only thing that has changed since last week is that the corporate media have gone balls to the wall to create an ‘ongoing crisis’ for Democrats that they can milk until election day – which they were always going to do anyway – and the utter scum infesting the Supreme Court have gone balls to the wall inventing a Conservaconstitution to replace the one that has worked for 200+ years – which they were always going to do anyway.

You can’t do anything about that. Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of.

All you lot can do is donate, volunteer, campaign, and keep on taking any opportunity you can to remind ‘normal’ voters that the choice is between progressive Government under Democrats and a descent into crab barrel fascism under Stench and the Hench Party.

What else you got going on between now and November that’s a better way to pass the time?

We have an angel match from RaflW and (very likely) an external match, so donations will almost certainly be 4x.  The usual match rules apply.

We have a lot to do and a lot of boots to get on the ground between now and November.

Let’s do this!

RFK Jr.’s Family Doesn’t Want Him to Run. Even They May Not Know His Darkest Secrets. https://t.co/zErxGnZJRs

— Morning Joe (@Morning_Joe) July 2, 2024

The family may not have shared every unpleasant detail, but all the cousins knew enough not to ask each other too many questions. Bobby Jr was, and is, someone who “smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness… and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” Here’s the article that seems to have sparked this week’s agita, Vanity Fair “RFK Jr.’s Family Doesn’t Want Him to Run. Even They May Not Know His Darkest Secrets.”:

… Long before he entered the 2024 race with a wagon train of conspiracy theories, the wider Kennedy family was intimately familiar with RFK Jr.’s problematic personality—the outsize confidence masquerading as expertise, the “savior complex” (as one family member called it) that drives him to take up quixotic causes and cast himself as a lone hero against established powers, and, above all, as one old friend calls it, his “pathological need for attention.” A few months ago I began talking to Kennedy family members and close friends, some on the record, others on background, to get insights into the man they know well, and to ask some pointed questions: Rather than merely rubber-stamping Joe Biden’s already fatally faltering campaign, shouldn’t you be telling voters what you know about your brother and cousin, whose candidacy threatens to swing the presidential election to Donald Trump and upend American history forever? With the future of the country riding on the narrowest of polling margins, shouldn’t you be describing in fine detail the acute dangers of the person you know so well—before your own family’s tragedy becomes the nation’s?…

After initially denouncing his candidacy last summer, most of the 105 Kennedy relatives —including Bobby’s eight siblings, the largest branch of the family—had hoped his campaign would collapse under the weight of his many bizarre claims and alliances with anti-vax cranks and Trumpworld figures like Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson. Instead the family has played defense, going public only when Kennedy’s statements went so far out of bounds they had no choice, like when he suggested COVID was “ethnically targeted” to spare Jewish and Chinese people; or his claim that anti-vaxxers suffered worse oppression than Anne Frank (a statement sister Kerry called “sickening and destructive”); or when he claimed there was a mysterious alternative shooter in the death of his father in 1968 (going so far as to interview Sirhan B. Sirhan in prison and proclaim him innocent); or that the CIA was possibly involved in the assassination—claims that caused deep pain for his siblings.

Their private efforts to get Bobby to drop out—or at least wait until 2028 to run—have also come to naught. “I’ve spoken to Bobby about this race, about what’s at stake, about the importance of supporting Joe Biden, of the impact of the Trump presidency on our country and on the world,” Kerry Kennedy, who leads the nonprofit Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and is disciplined in how she speaks of her brother, tells me, “and I was clearly unpersuasive.”…

The portrait family members paint of Bobby is of a man of exceptional charm, wit, brains, and generosity who has championed important environmental causes, but whose worst traits—an unnerving ease with blending fact and fiction; a powerful ability to deny the collateral damage of his own destructive actions—have engulfed his better angels. The source of these pathologies, they observe, are found in his long and troubling biography, a life story marked by personal trauma and addiction to drugs, sex, and, perhaps most perniciously of all, public adulation.

“You can’t reason with addiction,” says Stephen Kennedy Smith, a cousin of Kennedy’s whose father ran the elder Bobby Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign. “And what we know about addiction is it leads to bad judgment—extremely bad judgment.”…
======
For years Kennedy’s inner circle of friends, like Kaplan and Karsch, had stoked his lifelong political aspirations. But most of his old allies gave up hope. Kennedy had too many demons, too complicated a past. In 2014 Kennedy married Hines, in a wedding attended by a glittering array of friends, including Larry David and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and moved to Los Angeles. The move marked a reinvention of sorts, distancing Kennedy from his East Coast network and perhaps removing some of the built-in guardrails that had tempered his worst impulses. In addition to consulting for companies seeking his environmental seal of approval, he chaired the 501c3 nonprofit Children’s Health Defense, which began in 2007 under the name World Mercury Project, and inveighed against vaccines and fluoride in the water.

During this period, figures like Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, and Donald Trump mainstreamed conspiracy culture, with Trump seeding his 2016 presidential run by hyping the racist conspiracy theory that Barack Obama had faked his birth certificate and was a secret Muslim born in Kenya. Kennedy, having pushed discredited anti-vaccine views for over a decade, saw an opening. When Trump was elected president in November 2016, Kennedy secured an audience with him at Trump Tower. Friends warned Kennedy not to take the meeting, concerned he would end up like Mitt Romney, whose attempt to curry favor with Trump over dinner left Romney publicly humiliated. When Kennedy emerged from Trump Tower, in January 2017, he claimed to the press that Trump had asked him to chair a “commission on vaccine safety and scientific integrity.” That same day Trump adviser Hope Hicks said the two talked about autism but Trump didn’t commit to a commission on vaccines…

The year after the Samoa episode, the COVID pandemic began, ultimately killing millions of people—but it was a stroke of political and financial fortune for Kennedy, who found a ripe audience for his anti-vaccine claims, tapping into a newly fertile online world of misinformation, conspiracy, and distrust of pharmaceutical companies on podcasts and social media. High-profile podcasters like Joe Rogan allowed him to spout his conspiracy theories unchecked, and Kennedy built a following among pseudoscientists and self-styled influencers hawking supplements and alternative medicines under the banner of “wellness,” aligning with figures like Aubrey Marcus, a podcaster, poet, and self-styled guru of “Total Human Optimization” who hosted a fundraiser for Kennedy in Austin last March.

The man had met his time…

When Kennedy emerged as a candidate for president, in April 2023, his body and face had become transfigured by what he has called a regimen of “organic testosterone.” Kennedy showed off his unusually puffy body in campaign workouts, going shirtless in an infamous push-up video. “I mean, he’s unrecognizable,” says a family intimate who has known him for decades. “It’s like a body-snatching thing.”

His campaign also became pumped up, powered by cash infusions from his vice presidential pick, Nicole Shanahan, the ex-wife of Google cofounder Sergey Brin, and from Timothy Mellon, an heir to the Mellon banking fortune who has given $30 million to the super PAC supporting Kennedy while also giving $50 million to Donald Trump’s campaign—an alignment of interests that critics suspect is strategic, financing Kennedy’s campaign to draw votes from Joe Biden and thereby boost Trump…

A couple of quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is still doing well. Nothing much new to report. Thank you all, again, for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, just a brief update from the Israel-Hamas war update from earlier today. The news is not as good as Reuters had reported. Basically, Hamas wants some written commitments from the US, Egypt, and Qatar is a problem for Israel, which you can read as a problem for Bibi. Things are much closer than they’ve been, but this is not a done deal. Negotiations are supposed to resume next week.

Back to Ukraine.

Russia seems to be attempting to burn large portions of Ukraine down in addition to blowing them up.

I Am Grateful to Our Partners for Fulfilling Air Defense Agreements — Address by the President of Ukraine

5 July 2024 – 18:33

Dear Ukrainians!

First of all, I want to thank our partners for fulfilling air defense agreements. We aimed at doubling the strength of our air defense shield, and today the process has begun. I thank Germany for the Patriot that is already in Ukraine. This is powerful news. And there is even more powerful news: I thank the United States for another step towards strengthening our air defense, our Patriots. We keep working, and new decisions will certainly follow. The Ukrainians have already proven that there are no Russian missiles that we cannot shoot down. And we are doing our utmost to make the Russian terror lose.

Today, I also held a meeting on our missile program. I am grateful to everyone who is contributing to this and bringing closer our absolutely just ability to respond to Russia’s aggression in a truly tangible way. This is a matter of global stability and security — so that everyone in the Kremlin knows that they will not go unpunished.

The second thing for this day. New judges have been sworn in. Two hundred and forty-eight people. All of them are already starting their work.

The third thing. Today, I took part in the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Ukraine. It was attended by Government officials and representatives of various central authorities. And, in the near future, they should present to the public all the detailed proposals on how to support people, our communities, and Ukrainian businesses in the face of severe electricity shortages. We have already prepared legislative amendments that will be voted on. We have decisions of the Government. We have new loan programs — completely interest-free loans for people and low-cost loyal loans for businesses. All of this should start working as soon as possible.

Of course, we continue to focus on negotiations with our European partners to increase the volume of electricity imports. We are also working on the reconstruction of energy facilities.

Responsibility for all parts of the comprehensive energy package will be personalized for all Government officials. And the additional needs of communities must be taken into account.

I thank everyone who is working one hundred percent for our country and our people! I thank everyone who is fighting for Ukraine as for themselves!

Glory to Ukraine!

We have some additional responses to that letter that Politico published yesterday from international relations professors and think tank denizens.

— Illia Ponomarenko 🇺🇦 (@IAPonomarenko) July 5, 2024

Those very same “national security experts” have been consistently and persistently wrong and clueless about every little thing they ever said about Ukraine, Russia and the Russian war in Ukraine — again and again and again — and who have been openly propagating unconditional defeatism to the Kremlin and 1938-style appeasement in the West
now publish an “open letter” against admitting Ukraine into NATO to stop Russia’s decade-long war of aggression to erase it as a nation.

Moreover, this time around, their desperate mental gymnastics reaches the point of ironically stating that giving Ukraine a clear perspective of becoming a member of history’s most powerful defensive alliance (thanks to which not a single bomb is now falling on the Baltic states and Poland and Finland) is somehow a “disservice” to Ukrainians fighting and dying to save their country from Russian fascism — because that would get the Kremlin so upset and angry that it would be motivated to go on killing and destroying Ukraine!

See?

It’s not that Russia is already waging a full-scale, total war on Ukraine for two and a half years, so the entire cities wiped off the earth’s face, and is openly seeking complete deconstruction of the Ukrainian nationhood and identity, right?

And you know what
@politico
does?

“Wow, that’s yet another brilliant piece of analysis that will age very well, just like everything you guys said about Ukraine before, let’s give this a platform ASAP just days before a key NATO summit in D.C.”

Some people are just unable to learn and make conclusions from things happening in front of their own eyes.

ATESH movement reported it has stopped the operation of trains with North Korean ammunition near Russian Yekaterinburg.

ATESH agents conducted a successful operation on the Trans-Siberian railroad near Yekaterinburg. As a result, the railroad track carrying North Korean munitions was blown up.

“And we would like to remind you once again that the railroad will explode even more often as long as ammunition is transported along it.” – ATESH wrote.

ATESH is a Ukrainian partisan underground movement centered in Crimea. The word itself is not an acronym, it is Crimean Tartar for fire. The BBC has details:

A man, who we’re calling Agent One, takes photos as he crouches down in some bushes.

He tells us he’s part of a group called Atesh – a word that means fire in Crimean Tatar.

And via a messaging app, he describes his secret life to the BBC: spying on Russian forces in occupied Crimea.

“For probably two weeks, I planned in my head how and what I would do,” he says. “Planned the route, the main backup, what I should say in case I was noticed.”

Agent One is thorough. He takes multiple shots from multiple angles.

But it’s dangerous – potentially deadly – work. On one occasion, moments after investigating a site, he noticed a group of Russian servicemen nearby.

“[That] was a terrible moment,” he says. “I managed to lean down [by a] car and pretended that I had a problem with the wheel.”

“Miraculously, they just didn’t talk to me.”Atesh says it collects information on Russian military movements – mostly in Crimea but also in other occupied areas and even inside Russia itself.

Operatives say their information has aided high-profile Ukrainian strikes on Crimea, such as hits on a Russian landing ship and submarine – the Minsk and Rostov-on-Don – and an attack on the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in September 2023.

Most recently, Atesh said it had carried out reconnaissance work this week after a Ukrainian strike on a possible radar station in Yevpatoria.

Military bloggers in Russia dismiss the network as an online invention of Ukrainian intelligence, designed to overstate levels of resistance.

Yet Russian media also report that Atesh is a terrorist organisation, banned by the Kremlin.
